Larry's retirement ceremony was held on a night when the
celtics weren't playing. There wasn't an empty seat in the Garden and the fact that Magic flew in to attend tells you the magnitude of Bird's greatness. The last 7 seasons he played, he had spinal fusion surgery and missed most of one season after having bilateral Achilles' tendon surgery. Kevin McHale says that Bird never used painkillers despite the injuries he suffered. An absolute warrior.

Magic & Larry, resurrected the game of basketball......My dad loved basketball, but stopped watching, until the competition between Johnson & Bird was highlighted......What my Dad used to say, Larry's game reminded him of someone, who was not only playing basketball, but also, volleyball, dodgeball, hockey, baseball, track & Field, soccer, poker, & strategic chess in his head, and that's what made him so great 😊He certainly was one of the most unique and gifted players, I have ever watched!

The championship games were taped not live. Almost every single team had drug issues. Teams weren't making money. @@billvegas8146 When Larry and Magic came in the NBA was in dire straits and that is a fact. The NBA was in financial trouble and most of the teams in the league were struggling to get people in the stands. People had lost interest in the NBA and Larry and Magic brought people back. So YES they saved the NBA from going under, period. If you don't believe me go watch the documentary they did on Larry and Magic and see for yourself.

Bird and Magic's rivalry is probably one of the best in sports. It was pure and honest competition between two men that wanted to win. Their interview on Letterman is definitally worth the watch if you're interisted in knowing a little more about them. Larry was from Indiana and seeing Reggie Miller in the first few seconds that played for The Indiana pacers his whole career talk about how much Larry talked trashed is funny since Reggie was known for getting under people’s skin. Reggie was a great player and a great 3 point shooter but if you don’t know about Reggie and his trash talking you don’t get fully the joke about him talking about someone else talking trash. There is so many players that don’t get the credit they deserve for their contribution to basketball like Bird or even Reggie Miller.

Larry Joe Bird is one of top 5 greatest players ever because he is the greatest small forward of all time. Bird in 1980's played against arguably deepest era of all time great small forwards (Julius Irving, Mark Aguirre, James Worthy, Dennis Rodman, Adrian Dantley, Bernard King and George Gervin). All 7 SF are in Hall of Fame. Bird had most dominate run of 3 consecutive NBA MVPs (1984-86) and multiple seasons Bird finished 2nd in NBA MVP voting. Bird had level of passing skills like Magic Johnson (greatest point guard of all time) and was 50, 40, 90 multiple seasons (avg 50% FG, 40% shooting and 90% Free throw line. It was unfortunate Bird career was cut short due to back problems. How great Larry Bird career, his resume, respect from his peers he was on 1992 US Men's basketball team. During 92 Olympics with a bad back, the world saw flashes of old Larry Bird. Bird would retire in 1993. One of biggest trash talkers the game has ever seen and tremendous competitor. Larry Bird wouldn't give interviews.
He cut his own grass at the modest home he bought in Boston. The Press would go every week and shout questions at Bird as he tried to trim his lawn.
    He ignored them.
Magic Johnson and Bird became good friends. Bird even invited Magic to Indiana to train in the off season. When Johnson arrived he found he was staying with Bird at HIS MOTHERS HOUSE. They practiced on the court Bird had built in his back yard and his mother fed and took care of both of them that summer.

I was a scrappy east coast kid from Pat Riley's hoetown. Magic was my favorite player. Bird deserved all the praise he got and more, and I say that as a Laker fan who rooted against him. In Bird's rookie year he turned the Celtics from a last place < 30 win to a team that won > 60 games. Rookies just don't do that. The only one I can think of who did something similar was Kareem. In his second year they were champions. He had the fasted mind on the court I have ever seen, always knew where all his teamates were and where they were going. You guys have done a Harry Mack videos. Bird's basketball mind was like Harry's freestyle mind. He would be even better if he played in todays game with the 3pt emphasis, and the open spaces that didn't exist when he played. I look at the stars of today, and really skill is what is premium. Doncic is not a great athlete, neither is Jokic, or Curry, or Harden, or Kyrie Irving, or Trey Young, etc.... In my view Bird was a much better player than Doncic -- far better shooter, tougher, more efficient, better help defender, bigger, better rebounder, didn't dominate the ball stagnating the offense. Bird would either make a play or move the ball quickly, none of this dibble 15 times and take a difficult fade-away. That led to team that was hard to defend, everyone in constant motion. He is not the GOAT -- that is Jordan. Number 2 is either Lebron or Kareem. But If I am putting together an all-time 5 man starting team, both Bird and Magic are on it.

Bird developed significant back issues over the course of his career. In the last two years he missed a number of games, during the playoffs after each game he would go to the hospital and be put into traction to help manage the pain. Though he didn't live far from the arena, he would sometimes have to stop on the side of the street so he could get out an stretch his back.

Bird and Magic saved the NBA. Bird goes to a small school Indiana State Sr. yr. 33-0 record.
Magic went to Michigan State a big school. Had good football basketball.
Totally player for player on teams it went to Michigan State. Bird magic played in the highest rated basketball game ever . The NCAA final.

Good for her and the reverse racism comment. I think Larry not be ranked higher by many, especially today's younger crowd was because he was white. People love Luka these days and he still isn't half the player Larry was. (before anyone compares stats, it was a different league where they actually played defense and Luka is a point guard who's usage rate is crazy. Larry always shared those duties with a great point guard. (Dennis Johnson)

I was a Hawks fan during that era with Dominique Wilkins. I respected Birds greatness but would cheer for the Showtime Lakers head to head. Maybe follow this up with the vid about his epic trash talking.

That game against the Pacers in 91 was unbelievable. He had a bad back, bad feet, and now a broken cheek bone and concussion, comes back in the game and buries the pacers.

I am an Indiana girl and love my Indiana Pacers. But when we played Boston I always felt like we won even if the Pacers lost back then. Indiana is so proud of it's native son Larry Legend. He is the best player of all time IMO. That white boy hustled like nobody else.

Dennis Rodman famously said if Bird were Black he'd be just another player, and his teammate Isiah Thomas backed him up. Rodman was and is a nutcase, and Isiah didn't agree with Rodman but backed his teammate. Poor choice, as it likely contributed to Thomas NOT having a place on the "Dream Team."

    • @cindyknudson2715
      @cindyknudson2715 2 ปีที่แล้ว

And Bird didn't care AT ALL about what they'd said. He hated all the hoopla that was created in the press. It was said after Detroit (Rodman and Thomas) had just gotten beaten in the eastern conference finals. And Bird was moving on to play the Lakers for the championship.

Larry Bird is the best all-around player in NBA history and statistics prove it.
He could do anything extremely well.
Bird knew where every player on the court was at all times.
If he could walk he played.
He was the toughest player ever.
There is so much to say - instead watch more the videos about him.
Here are a couple of video's about Bird that are interesting.
