Celtics vs Hawks 1986 ECF Game 6, 3rd quarter. I'm curious to see your reaction to how the Celtics played given your knowledge and skill level. th-cam.com/video/UZ3I2iuaX-0/w-d-xo.html I like your opinions because you're much more than just a fan like myself. You're a player and a student of the game. I grew up playing on the blacktop and at the Boys Club, but soccer is my game. I look at you knowing basketball the way I know soccer.

This is from an NBA basketball fan of 45+ years!!! I didn't see Bill Russell or Wilt. My best friend's dad saw them both (and Kareem)! He was a very smart man and told me who he felt were the best players ever! He passed away (lived in Milwaukee his whole life!). He was one of the few people on earth who's opinion I truly respected! He NEVER was a homer or fanboy!!! He said that Bill Russell was by far the more valuable player (and arguably the best leader he has ever seen in team sports...and he absolutely HATED Celtics!!!) but Wilt was the Shaq of the 1960's...meaning he was almost unstoppable!
He said Bill was by far the best player in NBA history until KAJ came into NBA! Then he said Larry Bird took it into a whole new level and dominated the game (in every facet like he had never seen...and that included Magic being in NBA!). Then he admitted to me that MJ was greatest individual player, and there may not be another player like him! Then Shaq came into NBA, and he said it isn't fair. A few years later he actually told me that Shaq is not anywhere near Russell, Kareem, or Hakeem. That was such a great take, because a few months later Hakeem embarrassed Shaq (and the Admiral) to the point I felt bad for both!!!
He said the 5 players I witnessed that changes a franchise and the paradigm of NBA were...Bill Russell, Bird, MJ, and Duncan (honorablemention to IsaiahThomas)!!!
Before these players won multiple titles (except Russell...more on that in a little bit), the NBA and public said you needed a stacked roster and arguably the best big man in the NBA! Well, although the "Cheif" was a HOF center, he was NEVER considered a top 3 center in NBA!!! The Lakers had the best Center, point guard, and top 10 SF in NBA history on same team. They had Byron Scott, M. Cooper, Rambis, and a bunch of other very good to great players!
The media and so called "experts" (along with most unbiased fans) thought the 1984 finals would be a slaughter! Even ML Carr said "absolutely nobody thought we could beat the Lakers that year...but we believed in ourselves and its because of the leadership of Larry!".
This is what separates Russell, Bird, Magic, MJ, and Duncan from players like Wilt, Oscar, Russ, and Bron. Those players care more about their personal accomplishments and legacy as opposed to winning!!!
The thing I respected and loved most about Bird is he would sacrifice his body in preseason, and then go and work on his mom's house and wait for NBA season to start! He actually ruined his back trying to save his mother money!!!

This entire game is on youtube. I'm pretty sure Bird had a quadruple double. He was everywhere, doing everything. He knew exactly what plays Houston was running. After the game, coach K. C. Jones said, "Larry has reached the pinnacle of basketball. He is the greatest player in the world today."

This game was everything larry bird was. He was everywhere, doing something, while predicting the next 5 plays. Yes, this was 86. As far as best teams go, I'd definitely argue they were the most coordinated ever. They played with each other for so long that they knew what the other teammates wanted.

It would have been perfect if he’d scored 33 points! That whole team was on fire because of what had gone before this game. They were furious that they had let their emotions ruin their game. Bird was at his best and he was everywhere. He had a lot of “hockey” assists and his defence was prescient and exemplary. I think the great thing about the ‘86 Celtics was everyone was willing to win and they had learned that a personal stat line wasn’t important.

I've watched just about every game Bird ever played LIVE!!! When he scored 60 against Hawks (shooting mainly jump shots and everyone on Hawks were aware and tried to stop him!), the game where he had 30/12/10/9 steals after 3 quarters but I agree, this was the best game I ever saw Larry play!!! Hakeem was arguably the best big man in NB History (so underrated!), but that game Bird taught him how to play in the biggest games!
I honestly don't remember the 3 quarter quadruple double, but looking at the numbers, it is mind boggling!
P.S. The thing that stands out to .e is Bird was interviewed after game. The media asked why he didn't try to come back in the game to get his 10th steal??? His response was:
'I already did enough damage, why go for it when we're up 30?"
This is the reason I have Larry in my top 5, and why Lebron will NEVER make it. If LBJ had a chance to get a quadruple double, I bet my life he would've did everything possible to get it.
That is the difference between true greatness and a phoney!
I know a ton of LBJ fans are gonna get their panties in a bunch, but the truth is Larry (and legends of his ilk) would never care about numbers and records...it was all about winning...and Bron should be the same!

THE ONLY factor from 1984 on that kept us from winning every year..I’ll say every year til 89(when Larry only played 6 games) was our bench play..it would come and go sometimes season to season because of age/injury and sometimes because of just basic ineffectiveness..THAT would drag us back toward the pack..after our Title right here that problem was gonna be solved forever after drafting Lenny Bias..if not for that tragedy and if ever God help everyone Lenny actually joined this team??😂 It wouldn’t of even been fair..we would’ve been like the friggin Globetrotters playing exhibition games every night..McHale said he was gonna tell KC to just let Lenny start with Larry at the 3 and 4 and he’d go back to being the 6th man..great video/reaction as always brother and as far as what did Larry drink?? I think Larry drank beer for EVERYTHING..they probably just IV’d him beer(cheap beer too!)instead of anesthesia when he had his surgeries..

Yes, the 1986 Boston Celtics team would beat any team in a 7 game series 100 times out of 100. Bird had just messed up his back that previous summer, but it hadn't gotten terribly bad yet, as in the next year. That's why he said he should have quit then. He sensed his back would give him bad trouble in the future.

How many times have you heard that Bird is not that good on defense and Bird can't jump - i guess he could do both when needed.
I know what Bird said about this game and I am guessing that's because of the level of the competition.
In 1985 against the Utah Jazz Bird had 30 points, 12 rebounds, 10 assists and 9 steals - 1 steal shy of a quadruple double, which at that time had only been done by 1 other player in NBA history.
The thing about the game against the Jazz was the Bird took himself out in the 3rd quarter after playing 33 minutes and did not play the rest of the game.
Bird was asked why he didn't try and make history. Here is Birds response
"I already did enough damage. Why go for it if we're up by 30?"

Yes l believe 1986 Celtics was best, l was in the Army in 1984 and let me tell you the Truth... Larry Bird was the most loved and hated person in Basketball because he was white and so good, talking and backing it up.. He treated the best NBA players at the time, Magic to name a few like children.. I seen fights break out in the 1984 Championship on the base l was stationed at, tension was high, My friend Deagan Irish soldier from Boston let me wear his Celtics Jacket.. I had to escape and evade because the Brothers was gonna fuck me up haha.. l have never seen tension this high when Larry Bird and the Celtics vs Magic and the Lakers.. l did not mind wearing the Jacket because l loved Larry Bird and to this day he is my favorite player.. So l understand how this generation loves L James..

1st off Larry Legend was a simple guy he would have had a beer plain and simple! I saw this game and I was never more proud to be a Celtic fan than that game Larry showed that day why he is the best small forward EVER! The only thing that would have made this game perfect for Larry was having the other team be the team that beat them the year before The Lakers. Beating Magic again in 86 would have been the icing on that great season the Celtics had.

If someone thinks the 72 win bulls team is better first a person has to remember that they expanded the league by 6 teams in the early 90’s diluting the talent and busting up some teams. Adding 72 players that wouldn’t be in the league before. Making it easier for Michael. Next go player per player. First parish and Walton go to work on longley. He has no chance can’t score wouldn’t be able to defend. Longley would be going up against 2 bigger more skilled hall of famers. Rodman would have to guard mchale. Although Rodman could guard and contain other athletes he’d be too small 6’7” for mchale especially with his long arms . He’s too skilled for the type of defensive player Rodman was. Mchale is a top tier hall of famer on both ends of the court. Rodman is not. Pippen would have to guard bird. Young bird kills him. Bird is a top 5-10 player pippen is a top 30-70. Then bird guards Rodman and Rodman is not an offensive threat. Dj on mj of course mj but Dennis is still a hof,er and averages 14-16 for series. Ainge vs Harper. We’ll call it a wash but Ainge was a multiple Allsstar and a better shooter and the bench was way more skilled. I say Celtics in 6 games. Jordan is not enough to make up the difference.
