    Bird played 13 seasons against the hardest collective talent at any era of the NBA. He played half his career with a back injury so bad, some days he couldn't stand up without assistance. He had probably his best season following surgeries on both feet. Speaking of, most of his career was wearing flat bottom shoes. He had no medical training staff with technology for faster healing. He swept Jordan both times they played in the playoffs. He had multiple coaches throughout his career, most just filling spots. He never had a Pat Riley or Phil Jackson. He never had a Worthy, Adul Jabar or Pippen. He played in an era that was more physical, more violent. Of all in the GOAT talks, he was the only one who gave up his body on the regular. He's the only one that could at any given time, switch to his off hand and still dominate. Not just on a play, but for a game if wanted. People see the GOAT talks and never talk about the entirety of what makes a GOAT. MJ made himself great. Bird made everyone great. Bird put average teammates in the Hall because he made them look better than they were.

      @Ken D "Who was" is the answer. KC was a good coach because he had Bird who was a player coach. Without him, KC was not a good NBA coach. Guys like Magic and Jordan had coaches who were great everywhere they coached and whoever they coached. Phil and Pat have rings without MJ and Magic.

    I agree about the "game winner" definition, but it's just a poor choice of words. If you hit a shot with 5 seconds left to go ahead, and then somebody beats that, it doesn't change the fact that you came through in the clutch. I think that's why he counts them.

    Bird was the best pure shooter ever. He was left handed but shot right handed most of the time, however, he was just as deadly with the left. He once scored 24 points in a game left handed. Deadly accurate!

    Steph could make a jumper, but Bird made every kind of shot you could imagine. In other words, your looking at a shooter as a jump shooter, i look at a shooter as someone who can make a high percentage of all the shots. Left hand, right hand, one leg, falling down, fadeaway, post up, double team, falling out of bounds. It didnt matter with him. Steph cannot make those shots the same way Bird could.

    • @guittadabe5214
      @guittadabe5214 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In the most important shots Larry Bird was double teamed and sometimes triple teamed because everyone knew the ball was going to him for the final shot. And it was a shock when he didn't make it in an important game against the Lakers in the finals. That's how rare it was that he would miss those in the most pressure of situations!

    Great reaction to a good video! Although I only counted 18 instead of 23?? I missed out on the game in Washington where Bird hit a 3 to tie the game but the coach had called time out - then Bird hits another running 3 pointer in the center of the court to tie the game and force overtime, then in the OT = behind by 1 and Bird hits a deep 2 from the right side to win the game = 3 killer clutch shots in 1 game! I have Jordan as my #1 and Kareem as my #2 and then it gets difficult to pick the other 8. Bird is definitely in the conversation and I feel he has to be in the top 5 as he has a legitimate claim to being the best all around player we have seen. He was a great shooter from everywhere on the court, a phenomenal passer with pointguard court vision, and a rugged rebounder and could bang inside with anyone. He was tough as nails and had that competitive fire and will to win AND he was a great leader = not screaming at players but leading by example. Thanks!

    You asked about the game winner that Bird hit over Magic. That was in Game 4 of the 1984 NBA Finals which, in my opinion, is the greatest Finals series ever. It went 7 games and had it all…grit, drama, excitement, clutch moments, choking moments, fights, etc.

      @eeshelton 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Ken D Yes, same series. It happened in Game 4. Boston was already down 2-1 in the series and was getting blown out in Game 4 right before the clothesline happened. That play, along with Celtics coach KC Jones finally deciding to put Dennis Johnson on Magic, is what turned the series around for Boston. Larry hit the game winner over Magic in that game.

    • @SteveGellerMusic
      @SteveGellerMusic 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HenDawgTV Little bit of creative editing in the montage there. That shot by Bird over Magic was with 17 seconds left in Game 4 in 1984. The game went into OT and the Celtics eventually won, but it was about a 4 or 5 point win, not a last-second celebration. The footage of Johnny Most screaming while Bird is high-fiving the team is from the next season (1985 Game 4), where Dennis Johnson had hit the game-winning shot at the buzzer (Bird had the assist). So it is edited to look like Bird hit the shot over Magic with no time left and is then celebrating. In fact, the Game 4 win in 1985 was the last Celtics win of that series (the Lakers won 4 games to 2).
      The most amazing thing is that Bird and Magic only played each 40 times (41 if you count the college game). All of those highlights between the Celtics and Lakers from the 80's are from those 40 games.

    I know a lot of people don't want to rank Bird over Jordan, but just look at the head-to-heads they had in games together. Bird absolutely came out on top. No disrespect to Jordan at all, he is a phenomenal player. As for Bird's lack of athleticism? In my book he proved that doesn't necessarily matter, he more than made up for it in so many other ways. You definitely need to look beyond just his numbers, because part of his greatness was working to include everyone on the team and to help them to succeed. That sort of thing goes beyond statistics.

The reason I loved watching Larry so much was because he would surprise you with amazing moves and unusual shots. So, it made watching basketball so much fun. You never knew what might happen. I will say that LeBron is similar in providing amazing moves and skill, even though his style is different. Jordan was great, of course, but not as quirky and creative, imho. So, Larry is still my favorite, regardless of where he might ”rank.” And, today’s game is only getting better because the young players study these players of the past and add this knowledge to their own, individual styles. What a great game!

    Magic is listed as 6'9"....Bird is listed at 6'9".. but you are right...Bird is definitely taller than Magic. In Magic's defense, though...not even Ralph Sampson (7'4") was tall enough to block Larry's shot. Says something about how unblockable Larry was. I'll give Magic a pass on that one. He tried. 😄

    HAVING BEEN A BASKETBALL FAN AT ALL LEVELS SINCE THE EARLY 60'S I CAN ASSURE YOU THAT LARRY "LEGEND" IS DEFINITELY IN MY TOP 5 BASKETBALL PLAYERS OF ALL TIME. HE COULD DO IT ALL (PASSING, REBOUNDING, ASSISTS, STEALS, FREE THROW PERCENTAGE, SHOOTING ANY RANGE CLOSELY GUARDED OR WIDE OPEN IT NEVER MATTERED BECAUSE HE WAS NO DOUBT A "PURE" SHOOTER. PERIOD!!!!!!!!). LET ME PUT IT THIS WAY. IF WE TOOK THE TOP 10 PLAYERS OF ALL-TIME & PITTED THE TOP 5 VERSUS THE NEXT 5 I WOULD PLACE MY BET ON WHICHEVER TEAM INCLUDES "THE HICK FROM FRENCH LICK". THERE'S NO DOUBT IN MY MIND THAT HIS TEAM WOULD COME OUT ON TOP MOST OF THE TIME. PERIOD!!!!!!!!!!

    I put Michael Kobe and Bird top 3. In any order.. All had the killer instinct. The insane work ethic. Not many top 10 players have the work ethic. Defenders had to bite on Larry's fakes or he would just shoot it in their face.

    Add up rebounds, points, and steals, and Bird has more cumulative stats and accounted for more points than Jordan, and it's not even close.

    IF you want to say who the best shooter of all time is then you need to have data to back it up.
    I don't know who the best of all time is, what I do know is nobody told the other team what the play was and where he was going to shoot from before the play even started even close to the times Bird did.
    The same is true for the GOAT.
    Michael Jordan, Magic, Lebron - they are flashy players and wow you with the moves they make.
    Bird makes plays and you go - how the heck did he do that?
    All I can say is based on statistical analyses that I have done Larry Bird comes out as the best all-around player with Magic 2nd, Jordan 3rd,
    Kareem 4th and Charles Barkley 5th.
    While I love Birds all around game and think the others are great as well I have noticed how Barkley gets nowhere near the credit he deserves for how he played and the numbers he put up.

      Sir Charles was always one of my favorite players because of his hustle and effort. Extremely short for a power forward but his relentless effort and physical strength were eye opening. Definitely a player that I would want for my all time team.

    I'm a Celtics fan and legend truether. But I'd put him 6 - 10. It depends on whether you say impact on the game or actual skill. There would be over 10 players right now better then he was because the skill level of the NBA keeps getting better. But his impact was huge. Not more then Russell, jabbar, Jordan or James though.

    I recommended this. I would have appreciated a shout out 😖
    And it’s important to note that of the 21 listed buzzer beaters or clutch shots (listed at the end) , 18 were winners. THATS IMPRESSIVE. Name me another player who has that many clutch shots?
    Finally the actual title of the video isn’t “game winners” but “clutch shots & buzzer beaters” You can’t fault the video for your mislabeling it 🤷‍♀️

      It’s all good…l appreciate that you reacted to my suggestion. You might be interested to know that at Birds retirement, Magic said to Bird “did you see that special on ESPN about clutch shots? So many players got just one or two, but they could have done a whole SHOW on your clutch shots! They should just call it Larry Birds clutch shots!” I think I’ll find that clip & make a short out of it if there isn’t one. If I find that exact clip, I’ll post it here.

    Bird was better than Jordan until Jordan learned Larry's game and adopted tons of it. When Larry retired Jordan had studied him for years and was doing a lot of his stuff but being far more athletic. How do you rate that, 1a and 1b?

  • @meminustherandomgooglenumbers

    Jordan sucked. He had very little impact on the success of his team. When Michael joined the Bulls, they remained a bad team for years afterwards, and when Michael left to go play baseball, the Bulls were still borderline championship contenders without him. But when Larry joined the Celts, they had the biggest single season turnaround in NBA history, and when Larry sat out a year due to injury, the Celts barely finished .500.

    • @aaronrimkus5607
      @aaronrimkus5607 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      True Dat. I wouldn't say Jordan sucked, he was a very good individual player. That is the problem, he was a very good individual player, he made nobody better around him. Without a great cast around him, Jordan was just another athletic guy who was a great dunker, i.e., Dominique. All the PLAYERS from that era knew that Bird was a better all around player then "His Airness".
