His sight on the court and IQ are second to none. He made his teammates all better players and as you said perfectly. You had to be "READY" and that team was. That was his team and it was a Team effort . All in one. That was Teamwork that all kids should watch. Magic Jordan to Kobe and now lebron is a Huge fan of BIRD. And he played in the toughest era of Ball. The man was Hurt from start to finish in his Career. He still gave it all for his team. And Teamwork. And Won "MVP 3 times in a Row. Knick fan. From New York. But BIRD Amazed all of us. Even Jordan whom never won against Boston 0-8 . That's teamwork. And 86. What a team kids and todays NBA should learn how to play the game with 5 players on your team. All in SYNC. like a well oiled Machine . "Bird steals the ball from Isiah Thomas inbound pass no think pass to D.J. running down for an easy layup to beat the Pistons. Bird stole that game. Incredible presence always being in the right place at the right time. Another of his incredible skills. Man He was that great!! You could make 2 more videos of Bird always getting open. And knowing where to be offense & Defensively again and playing Injured from game one. He Mangled his finger cutting Bushes i believe and his Sister said he was a much better Shooter before that happened. And told no one. His injuries plagued his entire 13 year career cut short because his back finally gave out in 92. To End it playing and winning the Gold Medal. To end that Hard working Career. And have his #33 Hung up for all time. For that. Magic being there in Boston Garden. To saying "There will never be another Larry Bird. Dang you got me all Hyped up with all this old School ball want to shoot around. But its 1am and 20° out. Nah. But i bet Bird would be out .... Peace

When you look at totality of Birds skills...passing, rebounding, deep shooting, post up, scoring in the mid-range, FT shooting, clutch shooting, ambidextrous shooting...he is unarguably and without dispute the most gifted player of basketball who ever lived.

    • @USALibertarian
      @USALibertarian 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Definitely. Bird was the most complete player until Jordan anyway. Quibble but I would say Bird was skilled instead of gifted. I would define "gifted" as physical abilities. Wilt was the most gifted. LeBron is the highest skills + gifts combined. Jordan added insane competitiveness. Bill Russell is in that mix too.

I met a guy who was at Indiana State for Birds junior and senior years. He told me that students in Birds class told him that when he started scrimmages as a freshman, the coach put football helmets on Birds teammates because they kept getting hit in the face and chest by his passes. They learned pretty quickly to stay alert.

I always think the "not athletic" bit is overblown. I mean, sure, Larry never had the raw athleticism of MJ, Clyde, Dr. J, and some others, but honestly--those guys are rare even in the NBA. Bird's body control does demand a high degree of athleticism. He was one of the best ever in a very athletic league, so he can't have been "not athletic." If we learned nothing else from Brian Scalabrine, it's that perspective helps: just because he doesn't have the hops or quickness of Michael Jordan, that doesn't mean he isn't athletic. Think of it this way: The guy who finishes last in a 100m Olympic sprint is still CRAZY fast, or he wouldn't be there. Same with Larry's athleticism. Although I think we would agree (with Kareem) that Larry's greatest asset was really his MIND for the game. There may never have been a smarter man on the floor than Larry Bird. And that's how he beat guys who WERE more athletic, faster, better jumpers, etc.-- he knew where to be a second before they did. So he didn't have to be faster. And for some reason TH-cam crossed out my comment when I added to it, I'm not sure why....?

I had season tickets to Knicks games in the 1980's. I saw Bird play. His passing, his shooting was jaw dropping ridiculous. He would routinely destroy my Knicks. One of the few players I've ever seen who could dominate a game by taking only ten shots.... He would have 14 rebounds, 11 dimes, 17 points, and hit the game winning dagger in the last minute. A complete assassin... Great vid bro!!!

I remember a few years ago I saw young modern fan say that Bird was a poor defender and I knew he wasn't, but I wanted to check my memories against the actual games. I looked at stuff before his back injuries and in 1984 the Celtics went 7 games against the Knicks. Bird went 13 out of 24 and wound up with 39p 12r and 10a.
After the game Knick coach Hubie Brown said what killed us was Larry Bird's defense. He was like a free safety disrupting our plays all over the court.

From someone who grew up watching him play, IMHO what made Bird great, was his intuition. Larry Bird knew intuitively whose head to mess with, he knew intuitively when & where he could make the shot & he trusted his intuition to inform him where a teammate would be standing when he went to make a pass. #thatsmytwocents

Bird hands down no argument over Lebron. I can give you plenty of reasons but the singular one that's most important is that like Michael, Kobe and Magic, Larry was a stone cold killer on the court willing to do anything to win. I include Magic because behind that smile he was an assassin. As a life long Celtics fan I've seen it

Lebron is a physical freak... and he's been doing it at a very high level for a very long time. If you value longevity and counting stats, then he has the clear edge. That said, taking both in their primes, when the game is on the line I'm giving the ball to Bird 100 times out of 100. He was an assassin in a way that Lebron never was and never will be.

  • @lashutterbug
    @lashutterbug 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Bird was able to do what he did for several reasons. First, he had true 360 degree court vision. Second, he was usually three steps ahead of everybody else on the court--just ask Dr. J, Isiah Thomas, Reggie Miller, and all the other legends who'll back me up on this. Third, he had perhaps the most insane work ethic in the league at the time. Fourth, his insane will power, specifically his ability to deal with pain that would have sent the likes of LeBron to the disabled list for weeks, if not months. And fifth, his ability to deliver MVP results in the face of all of his injuries, right up until the end. He is easily in the Top 5 of all time, and the 1986 Celtics were also one of the Top 5 teams of all time. They were operating on a level so high, it boggles the mind. Thankfully there's plenty of material here on YT about that team for you to watch, and see what old-school basketball greatness was all about.

FYI sometimes when it looks like Larry is missing a layup and it hits the backboard, he's actually passing it back to himself off the back board - another pass used between Larry and Dennis Johnson is dennis would throw the ball at the backboard and it would bounce off to Larry in the form of a pass, they used it quite a few times.

Larry Bird knew that he could go for 40 on any given night but him growing up in a small town, he said he was always taught that you play as a team, you win as a team, and you lose as a team so he always liked to get everyone involved in the game. The great thing about those Celtics teams is they didn't care who scored. There were about 20 other teams in which Kevin McHale and Robert Parrish could have been the leading scorer.

I hope after your time on the HBO show you realize that the Celtics were a fantastic fast breaking team. Second only to Showtime. And you noticed the greatness of Parish. He would hammer home these great dunks when got the ball. He was a great fast breaking center too. When the Celtics would beat the Lakers, often they had their break running and Parish was wearing Kareem out by sprinting down the floor. Bird's first coach made them run and run and run so they were always in shape.....and as the 80's went on you saw ALL the Celtics becoming passers. It was like they were playing the Bird Style. McHale started off as a black hole who never passed it back, by 86 he was like a mini Larry Bird
You should react to some of the 86 celtics videos, maybe the best passing team ever. The Beautiful Game is a great, great video. Another channel to check out, is thinking Basketball, an AMAZING analyst. He did a series of who had the Greatest Peak in Basketball and his Bird video is off the charts.
I like when you mention he always made the right play. You're in very, very good company. Best game ever was when ISU played Creighton in Omaha for the Missouri Valley Title in Bird's junior year. No shot clock, Bird was like 17 of 18 and Creighton was down by one with 10 minutes to go. They figured their only chance was to hold the ball for the final 10 minutes and take the last shot for the win and they did it. Obviously this was before the shot clock when the four corners was standard.

Bird was a leader by example. Unlike Jordan, he wasn't in the face of his teammates. But they KNEW what Bird demanded and they responded out of mutual respect. Bird was a great leader; the ultimate team player; and he was world class at all skills. Not to mention, clutch as heck. All of these reasons are why you start any all-time team with Bird. Then you pile on guys like Jordan, Dr. J, Magic, Kareem, Russell, DJ ... throw in Havlicek at the 2 along with Kobe. But Bird is where it all starts.

If I started a team he would be my first player chosen. Interesting aside, he was offered a contract by the Globetrotters because he was that flashy and attracted a crowd.

Great analysis as you watched. FYI here is the winning % for Bird and Magic. In games played, Bird was 660 wins and 237 losses for 73.6% Magic was 670 wins and 236 losses for 73.9% = an almost identical%. Before Bird's dual heel surgery and his back issues, for his first 9 years Bird had 534 wins and 177 losses for 75.1% and Magic had 475 wins and 164 losses for 74,3%. I think that 75.1% may be the highest win % for a 9 year stretch ever?? Also Bird played in the stronger East so Bird had the more difficult path. Per Dave Heeren's "Basketball Abstract" chapter 11 pages 49-50 and all teams included, the East dominated the West head to head for every single year for all 10 years of the 80"s. LA in their 9 Finals vs the East won 24 games and lost 27 games! If LA had been in the East = no way they make 9 Finals. Bird had the court vision of a point guard, very rare for a big man and could rebound like a power forward and could shoot from anywhere on the court. He was ambidextrous, so he could use his body to shield his shots and pass with either hand. He created the 50-40-90 club and did it for 2 seasons in a row. Bird also demanded the ball at the end of games because he had a killer mentality. IMO = he is the most skilled and well rounded player ever.

Best passer ever and all- aroumd player, clutch player ever-Definitely start out with Larry Joe- look at the history, it doesn’t lie, When Bird came to Boston they were bottom of the barrel, the next year they won 62 games( top of Eastern Conference and never looked back, best all around player ever and love Lebron but Larry made everyone on his team 50-75 % better than they would of been, TEAM PLAYER ISNT THE WORD, BIRDS THE WORD/ Truth / history doesn’t lie!

You called it perfectly. Because he was such a great scorer the attention he got from the opposition defence allowed him to be a great passer and to add to that because he was such a great passer it allowed him to be great at faking passes to give him self room to get shots off.

Isiah Thomas talks about his perspective of the steal Bird did and I think he makes a good point Larry made everyone better imo. I think his trash talking was a way to elevate other players in a way too. Cause if you look back at the players he did it to, almost all are top tier players or became hall of fame players.

Outstanding - thanks. Larry could of had a much higher scoring oercentage, but he shared the ball. Then the last half or so of his career the injuries slowed him down. He was a great marksman/scorer and the 3 point line was 1.5 feet further out then. Also when Larry started there were almost no 3 point shots which if he would of had a higer percentage of threes his scoring avg would had been up.
Ref his winning percentage he was out except 6 games during the 89 season and again go back to hi injuries in his last half of his career.
Learn more and you will have more than respect of Larry.
    Watch Bird vs MJ.

I have seen three of your reaction videos and it's so different than many reaction programs in good ways. Some of them have young pups that just talk too much. Some even say they would do this or that against Larry or Dr. J., whoever. You are quiet and respectful. You ask questions about players or situations and the old NBA. I watched this one about the Pound being the best passer of all time. Didn't surprise me. His number of "touchdown" passes along should be shown in Canton. No other player could make all the passes Larry did. Many can do some similar passes, nobody can rebound, hit the floor, look up the floor and make a pass for two and a foul most of the time. Then stay at your opponent's end of the floor on defense! He did it all.
You need to do some research on Robert Parish. I thought you knew about him. He was stoic. Didn't brag, yell, or talk stuff he couldn't back up. Look how fast he dunks the ball once he receives it. He was tough! The Lakers had a big-three of Jabaar, Magic and James Worthy. They always are looked upon as being better than Parish, McHale, and Bird. I think it's a tough pick, either way. The Chief always ran the floor, and the other team's Center ragged. He was on the other end of so many of Larry's long bombs. I know this is about Larry, but the Chief was a MAN. He didn't put up with that mess like Lambeer was doing to Larry in one playoff game. The Chief elbowed Bill Lambieer and took him out of the game.
A suggestion? Tom Chambers. This man specialized in reverse slams, in traffic! Only player with 20,000 points NOT in the Hall of Fame. He was bad! He's the one that jumped over Mark Jackson in the playoffs. He jumped over Mark and the crowed, along with the TV watching fans jumped up in amazement at what we just witnessed. A true fan, if you liked the Suns or not, reacted like a Ruckers' type crowed would have. It was an incredible moment in the '80's NBA!!! Thanks.

Note that Bird is the only player in history to have at least 24.3 ppg, 10 rpg and 6.3 apg. That is three less points than LeBron, but 3.5 more rebounds, and same number if assist. And significantly more assists and rebounds than Jordan, though a 6 ppg less average. I saw Magic, Bird, Jordan, Kobe, LeBron and many others. Did not see Wilt and Russell. But Bird made other better, more so than any player. Even Magic (to me). Note Bird's first year in the NBA. The Celtics, only won 29 games the year before. With only two minor roster changes, and the addition of Bird that same team won 61 games the next year (a record 32 game improvement).

One thing about Bird is you could build a lot of different types of teams around him. Because he didn't need to dominate the ball and would still get passes. And he was fantastic offball. LeBron has to have the ball to be as effective as he is.
In terms of picking between them. If you got to see their whole career and were going to have the player the whole time. I would go with LeBron. Still great all these many years later. Two decades of tremendous value. If you had pieces to work with already, I would pick Bird.
LeBron is the better one on one defender and can do spectacular things. Bird is not doing chase down blocks or protecting at the rim. Bird had that killer instinct from the getgo. LeBron was shaky under pressure early on. I give him credit for going to a sports psychologist to work on that. The other thing about Bird was his decision making was so, so quick. LeBron seems to hold the ball for bit before making a pass......on the other hand LeBron is playing against modern defensive schemes

React to his top 50 assists. It has some footage the same but some different stuff also. And it's a better quality video. And you asked us our opinion on how you're doing. And for the most part you are one of the better b ball reactors. Here's what I see as the good in your performance.
    1) You have a pleasant voice and demeanor
    2) You truly seem interested in learning about heroes of the past.
3)You actually know about and play the game.
    4) You aren't overly ghetto.
5)Your mic sound is perfect. And does not overwhelm the video.
    6) You do not loudly talk over the video.
And here are what I consider negatives
    1) Do not render premature opinions or guess what something is or will be until you see it.
2)And don't make remarks like...His passes weren't flashy. I can't believe that came out of your mouth. Put on a pair of glasses or something. Why would you risk pissing off the many older Bird fans who are giving you subs, likes, viewings and repeat viewings. the young kids may let reactors get away with jabs to a player that is before their time...But the older subs take your words deadly serious. Like me. One pass is all reactors get. I'll attribute it to your young age this time.
I am 53 and know every era of the game since the 1970's and have been watching reactions for years.
Tips...Do not overly glorify other players while reacting to a player. We want all the glory and your attention on that player you're reacting to. And don't speak when commentators or narration is going on....Remember that when you're talking...You're not listening.....Overall though I think you're on the right track....Just heed my warnings.
