    3 Fun Facts:
    1) There was originally going to be a 3rd variant of Big Daddy aside from the Bouncers and Rosies. The 3rd would've had a shoulder mounted cannon that shot grenades and rockets. They couldn't get all the kinks worked out in time for the release date, but eventually they were able to get it working and they were introduced in BioShock 2 as the Rumbler.
    2) The Gatherers weren't always Little Sisters. At first, they were just the slugs, but the devs wanted the players to feel bad about killing them. There's at least concept art of them instead being amputee dogs that pulled themselves around on wheels, but they thought they were too pathetic, so they didn't go with that either.
    3)
When Atlas's "family" gets blown up in the sub, he yells their names. "Moira" and "Patrick". In Fort Frolic, there are posters for a stage production, and the 2 lead performers' names are Moira and Patrick.

As soon as we got that one recording about Tenenbaum always wearing the same sweater, I've been tittering over the possibility that she added "must wear sweater at all costs" into Jack's genetic enhancements.

There is a Power To The People that you can only get if you let Sander Cohen live in Fort Frolic. If you do that, you encounter him later, which let's you get through an otherwise locked door.

Wow, that was a brief ending. I appreciated what they were trying to do with showing the emotional payoff of the player rescuing all theLittle Sisters, I just wish we had gotten something a little longer. I think Fontaine's voice wasn't only scared of having to fight the player but also scared of having to kill who he considered a son. Thank you for introducing me to this game, I know understand the hype and think this is one of the most stylish games ever made.

I'd totally be down for more Bioshock, I don't have much affection for the series since I only played infinite, but I like the ideas of them and, as John pointed out, the stylization.
Very funny that John pondered briefly on how he thinks other people were also enamored with Elizabeth because that's the understatement of the century.

I def recommend playing Bioshock 2! You might like the combat more in that one. It feels like they improved a lot of the mechanics imo. The little sisters are also given more than just "fight big daddy and save", since I feel that was a personal issue for me in the first game.
Also, while it's not Irrational Games behind it, the team is made up of people from IG, as well as Arkane Studios.

I've wanted to go back and rewatch your playthrough of it for awhile, but held off because of how old it was. I'd really love to view it through a lens of today. Plus I really enjoyed your playthrough of this, you made me laugh SEVERAL times. I'm not the best at commenting about how much I love each episode as I usually watch towards the end of the day and frankly my brain and body stop working at that point, but I really do enjoy your humor and commentary. The game is much stronger if you read Atlas Shrugged which is the Ayn Rand book that this game is attacking philosophically. All the decisions in the atmosphere address it including references in the drinks of all things. If you've read the book the message is never forgotten and its an entirely new and fascinating experience with that context, with extra environmental storytelling, making this one of my top three 3 games. And this from someone who hates hack and slash and shooters.

Kind of sad watching the big daddy raging around at 44:25 attacking splicers but with no little sister to take care of. He'll never understand that the girls are all okay. He's just a pile of angry organs in a suit stuck in panic/attack mode. Yes I'm overthinking it, but they added sad violins and everything.
On the other hand, John sassing a child over who the real slowpoke is, telling her to stay away from fires, and pausing to admire fossils while the kid runs around is very entertaining.

Maxing the Bouncer research is the hardest one. You have to go all in hitting them with every plasmid and getting action shots with multiple subjects because you have so few chances.
And Bioshock 2 is criminally underrated and better than Infinite. But that’s a discussion for down the line

The best part of this playthrough was definitely you snarking the Little Sister as a Big Daddy during the whole escort section! 😂It makes me think you and CK will probably have some fun banter as she gets into her more chatty toddler years!
The endings for this game have always been underwhelming for me, and I always wish they did like an escape section in the good ending akin to RE4 when Leon escorts Ashley out of the collapsing area. Regardless, you're spot-on that the stylization and a lot of other factors still make this a pretty influential and memorable game. Thanks for replaying this for us!

I recently replayed Bioshock Infinite myself and I walked away from it thinking it's withstood the test of time. All around it was a solidly fun, action-packed, and thought-provoking experience. Unlike the first two games, Infinite really breathes a lot of life and vibrancy into the environments, as if the city in the game is a bright and lofty counterpart expanding as far as the horizon compared to Rapture's dark and grungy corridors, but Columbia still hides a dark, corrupted underbelly beneath its gold-studded streets.
In my opinion, Infinite hasn't lost its luster in the slightest and I had a great time with it, but I'd love to see a playthrough from John to hear his thoughts on it.
Anyways, thoroughly enjoyed this Let's Play and I hope to see more Bioshock games in the future!

I played 2 and don't get why people say its better than one. It has a less tedious hacking system, and the environments are more detailed, but thats about it. The weapons more or less function the same, and protecting the little sisters is tedious and immersion breaking as waves of splicers out of nowhere just beeline for her as soon as she stabs the corpse. Just my opinion tho

Would love to watch you play Bioshock Infinite, that was my first Bioshock game so I have a soft spot for it. THAT BEING SAID (without going into spoilers for people who haven't seen it) I think one of the big issues that became more obvious as time went on is Ken Lavine likes to make "both extremes are bad" games, and while that worked for System Shock 2 and Bioshock it ends up a being kinda gross in Infinite. I haven't played thru or seen a playthru of it since it came out in 2013 so I would be very interested in seeing it again, there are definitely moments and set pieces of that game that stuck with me

Agree on how the style and story really was the game's best part! I never saw BioShock Infinite (or at most, only the first part), but I'm curious how the different setting John described will feel compared to this, especially with the division on it. Also, I wonder if the playthrough here felt less difficult because John's better at video games now, or because maybe they lowered the difficulty in some parts (like the Little Sister gatherer escort mission), or both?

The more Fontaine raves about whatever, the more I'm failing to grasp what his plan ever was. Did he want Jack to escort him to the surface after destroying the city? If he wanted to rule Rapture, it kind of seemed like Ryan was holed up in his room doing a lot of nothing - wouldn't it have been easier to impersonate Ryan over the radio until everyone lost faith in him? Are they both just that committed to self-praising speeches and needed someone to listen to their bickering?

I love the story, love the background of it (rand, Atlas, etc), love the twists, etc., But i personally highly dislike the art style. I know, i know. I should like it, but there's something off putting. Ifk if it's too realistic in story but too cartoon looking at the same time. I don't like the way they move around of how they repeat too much.
I guess they don't feel like real victims of living in an isolated city, that truly embraced free for all capitalism -- like doctors can even Frankenstein the populace and are supported in doing so, yet their design feel hard into bugs bunny looking. The art in 2 is much more pleasant on the eyes, but the story was too busy for me.
These are just my opinions. I totally get why a lot of people love it.

Its interesting how Bioshock 2 was viewed poorly at the time for not having the twist of 1 and Infinite was universaly praised, but in the past years their reputation have been reversed. While I think the plot of Bioshock 1 is more impactful I find the second game a more well rounded experience. It might not have the twist of 1 but I really appreciate the heart that 2's main story and dlc have. I still like Bioshock infinite, specially for its amazing art, but the gameplay feels a bit restrictive compared to 1 and 2, and the plot is full of issues and half baked ideas that makes it less enjoyable to replay than it should (the dlcs are out of question for me, I think the plot of them is really bad and poorly thought out).

Yeah, this game is chock-full of politics - mostly shining a light on the absurdity of Libertarianism and the selfishness of Ayn-Randian philosophy.
Frankly (in my opinion) two of the *worst* belief systems around.

    • @AngeliqueStP
      @AngeliqueStP หลายเดือนก่อน +2

@@jimjones6901 Well... a comment board isn't really the place to go in depth on a discussion of political philosophies since (like with religion) there's dozens of different schools... 'left-Libertarianism' vs. 'right-Libertarianism' for example, so I'll keep this limited to the in-game version, and brief.
Bioshock leans into the Ayn Rand branch of Libertarianism ('Objectivism') as you can see by the names used, and the whole point of the game was as a satirical send-up of that philosophy, illuminating the 'taken to it's logical extremes' absurdities of a society built on the Objectivist 'principles' - that man should be driven by selfishness and not altruism.
I loathe Ayn Rand, both for her right-leaning political beliefs and her as a person: she was a racist, anti-LGBT+, a colonizer, a hypocrite, and just an overall horrible individual. She testified as a friendly witness before HUAC during the second Red Scare. And I believe in Altruism, not "f you, I've got mine."
I lean hard left and most all of the the Libertarians I've dealt with have been right-Libertarians. Plus it probably doesn't help that the mass of libertarians on TH-cam comment boards are egde-lord dude-bros in their 20's (good news being most seem to grow out of that phase.)
Now, ofc I don't know which of the 51 flavors of Libertarianism you're into and I'm not interested in having a YT debate about it... but...
If you want a really good overview of the problems with Libertarianism, I do highly recommend the 'The Majority Report with Sam Seder.' Sam's been debating Libertarians since... well, let's just say the first vid of his I saw was 11 years ago, but he has a loooong-time standing challenge to take on any libertarians that call in to the show. It's been very eye-opening, lol.
'Night. And watch out for those Splicers!
