It seems like no one who replicated this understood why the high g note works. They just do a falsetto and show off. The note itself isn't the key ingredient, it's the raw passion with which it's delivered.
Actually in singing, passion is the enemy of high notes. The key is to look and sound passionate. But if you feel that passion the note will go SPLAT all over the place. Just look at everyone in Lindsay Ellis' video who has veins in their necks. If your neck is tense, there's NO way that note is coming out. But plenty have tried to force it. Nils Isberg hit the nail on the head, this is almost a whistle tone. No idea how he's making it. But it sure is amazing.
As a 12 year old I loved this song instantly, but could never have imagined I’d be listening to it and loving it fifty years later. Music, lyrics and one of the greatest voices in Rock perfectly combined to give us a timeless classic.
During the famous 'whyyyyyyy' high note of the song, Gillan's voice seems to surpass straightforward note reaching and actually becomes like a child's cry, in that way that when a baby or child is so emotional, their cries overwhelm them and their voice, even if it gives them a temporary sore throat, surpasses a healthy vocal expression. That's why I think Gillan's interpretation will always be the greatest, he seemed to stretch his voice to the great beyond and elicit the emotion of someone overwhelmed by the dread of what they are led to believe they must do. He also does an incredible job of the section with the lyrics 'Right, I'll die, just watch me die, see how I die' - he manages to balance anger, pride and pleading all in one as he consigns himself to his fate from God. You can hear his fear turn to anger and resoluteness, then pride and almost vengefulness as he tells god he'll face death, but that God better be prepared to watch his son die. A fantastic job of expressing Jesus's grappling of the human confines and trying to face with courage the ultimate sacrifice, of one's life for a cause.
I grew up listening to this album, and I couldn't have put it better myself. Such an exquisite emotional performance, summed up using only his voice. Nobody else I've seen or heard has come close, including Ted Neely.
The Magnificent interpretation of Ian Gillan's portrayal of Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane was Extremely well-articulated. Thank you. In addition I think it's interesting to note that in the biblical account of Gethsemane, this Christ was in such a mental turmoil and an emotional self struggle pushing himself he collapsed to the ground actually causing droplets of blood in his sweat. This agonizing intensity and anguish continued to increase to the point where he fully collapsed prostrate immovable upon the dirt. This struggle was so intense God his father had to dispatcha Holy Angel to strengthen him to continue the process. The rest is history.
In the USSR, listening to Western music was forbidden. Music was smuggled through the Iron Curtain by sailors, athletes and diplomats. One vinyl record cost a month's salary on the black market. We copied it to magnetic tape and listened to it secretly. One day, they brought "Jesus Christ Superstar" on two vinyl records. We listened to it and copied it to magnetic tape - it was like alien music, we had never heard anything like it
I am always astounded by Gillan's performance here. It's too bad a better version either doesn't exist or You Tube has no other recording-- when the song and his lips go awry, at the pinnacle of the song, it's just distracting. I just read today that Gillan was asked to play Jesus in the film version, but insisted if he joined the cast that his band receive a salary too, as they would have to stop touring. Ted Neely was chosen instead. I wonder what trajectory Ian Gillan's life would have taken if he had starred in the film?? Although Neely seemed born the play the role, and was magnificent!! In any case, Ian is a stellar musician in every sense of the word. Peace to all in 2023.. 🕊🕊🕊
Grew up singing this entire rock opera as I ran and danced around my living room... this song is surely the height of the show. As a kid I took Gillan's singing for granted.. today I realize just what perfection it is.
Truly the best version of Gethsemane. I listened to this rock opera and felt the emotion and passion in this album that brought me closer to Jesus as a man. Good stuff!
Definitely a splendid voice. Personally I admit I prefer Ted Neeley's rendition, is more felt, more role related - not for nothing, he is (predominantly) an actor while Gillian is a (superb) singer.
Gillan blows the doors off Neely version. Neither is bad, again it's the actor vs the rock singer. The album had some heavy duty singers like Johnny Gustafson and Murray Head in addition to Gillan. I have the cassette
As a lifelong Deep Purple and Gillan fan I still think think Neeley's version has way more feeling and impact. Gillan is slightly ahead of the music early on doesn't match Neeley for the emotional delivery and epic reach of the song. Not for nothing did Neeley tour extensively in the lead role (even though Gillan was on record with his role in JCS earlier, before the film) . It wasn't just lights, camera, action - Neeley had great experience and delivered live with this song and the others on the album.
I saw Ian Gillan in the London production in the 70’s when I was a kid and I’ve been obsessed with this musical ever since. So powerful, so many great songs.
Ian Gillan has never appeared in the theatre production. As per his own statements he was too busy with his band to even consider theatre or cinema appearances in JCS.
An atheists has no objective morality, and it's bssed on no more thsn just opinion - man made nonsense that changes with time and place. It's the belief in nothing and meaningless and has been trumped up as the 'scientific' reasoned belief despite surveys consistently showing that a majority of scientists actually believe in a creator. The original early scientists were also trying to uncover the mystery of God's creation, not dispute it. But the finance controlled education system and media has pushed it as the humanistic belief, when it's basically a moralityless free for all.
Inspiration itself is a gift from God, and I'll tell you thing one for sure the 'scientists' at cern certainly believe in a god, just not the God. And most ppl haven't a clue what they're doing there. Which you won't find on this platform.
I remember hearing this for the first time with tears pouring down my face when the album came out. Ian’s voice conveyed the agony of Christ as no one else could. Sublime
It was weird, doing highschool supposedly x ian but with jewish name, BAHURIM, and teachers. The movie was shown in our aula and Rob Hartkamp , ourBiology teacher that ignored Darwin came in said it was blasphemy.
Could Ian Gillian be ANY more talented? The voice of Deep Purple, as well as that brief stint in Black Sabbath, the solo career, and other projects...the ultimate, consummate rock singer!! Those high notes still gives me chills...and the ORIGINAL Jesus in this masterpiece!!
I have early onset dementia.(I'm 61 years old). I can barely walk due to bad knees. Put yourself in my situation, and re listen to the lyrics. Welcome to my life. This is in no way a complaint. I've had a helluva ride.
I don't know how many times I've listened to this since the early 70s, but I still cry every time. Gillan's version is the only one that does that to me.
@Dirk Diggler nah man, it's clear that this was written for someone with the power of Ian Gillian, Neely just doesn't have that, Neely did the stage version better than Gillian could've ever done because he's not an actor, but in terms of raw power of the voice, which is such a fundamental aspect of Gethsemane, Gillian stands head and shoulders above Neely
@Dirk Diggler Dude, Ian was not in the film because he's not an actor. Trust me man, you don't want to do this divine argument, you first have to prove that God exists and then you have to prove that God wants this, the world doesn't work that way.
@@pillowprincess3673 I was indeed born for this role. No but I get it, it's perfectly fine to prefer Neely honestly, Gillan was not an actor after all, it's only logical to want those visuals, that instrumental break around two thirds in hits so hard in the movie because it shows those paintings and it shows Neely being upset and stuff. I wouldn't argue his voice is nearly as powerful as Gillan, not against Neely, Gillan is just THAT powerful. I feel like it perfectly works for Gethsemane, it got me way more into JCS than the movie ever dit honestly
I think in versions like Ted Neeley and Steve Balsamo you can feel the sadness, confusion and anger of Jesus.. Ian is very good vocally, but in this video he's singing the song, not playing Jesus
I'm seen & heard many a JC Superstar through the decades and there still has been no one who nails the emotion of this song as well as Ian Gillan. All those actors failed to act it as effectively as the singer did.
the voice of Jesus! what singing! JC left all alone in the garden of Gethsemane, his apostles addled to sleep by whatever they have consumed...JC facing an existential crisis why he has been chosen to die, to be nailed to the cross, for the sake of all mankind. Why I should die! The loneliness, the angst, the torment, and above all to come to terms, the acceptance of death...delivered with such passion by Ian Gillan whose vocal chords strain, stretched to the very limits to convey JC's existential angst
I’ve listened to so many excellent versions of this but with respect, none come close to the emotion Ian expresses, it doesn’t feel like a performance it feels like he’s exoressing what’s happening to him, genius ❤️
Came across this having just seen an excellent local production of JCS. Never heard Gillan singing this - but oh boy! Talk about understanding the assignment! Absolute perfection, just as he was at his peak with Deep Purple. I remember being blown away the first time I heard Child in Time. For him his falsetto is just part of his natural voice and he uses it to express emotion, not as a "look at what I can do" moment like so many do. Brilliant. Blows established Broadway performers out of the water.
It's a human story, the suffering of a man. There is no question of Jesus' humanity. The tragedy is all too human. The big question is divinity. Was he divine ? Personally I doubt it. Undoubtedly Jesus had his fans, but just because people say things like Eric Clapton is God, it doesn't mean that three days after his future death, Eric Clapton will appear to his bereft fans in a locked room. Or maybe....

Unique !!! The original , the best.
It seems like no one who replicated this understood why the high g note works. They just do a falsetto and show off. The note itself isn't the key ingredient, it's the raw passion with which it's delivered.
ThejollyFrenchman BINGO!
BINGO!
The amazing thing is that his high G isn't just a G, his vibrato is so wide that it sounds like he's almost doing a tremolo between a G and a B-flat!!
@@nilsisberg5445 Haha nice one!

Actually, there is no sore throat there, unless one do it loud. HIs technique seems to be well controlled though. Great performance
I grew up listening to this album, and I couldn't have put it better myself. Such an exquisite emotional performance, summed up using only his voice. Nobody else I've seen or heard has come close, including Ted Neely.
It’s called whistle voice. And it’s a trick anyone can learn. It’s not the normal part of the voice.
Those high notes are easy if you do it right and shouldn't cause a sore throat
In the USSR, listening to Western music was forbidden. Music was smuggled through the Iron Curtain by sailors, athletes and diplomats. One vinyl record cost a month's salary on the black market. We copied it to magnetic tape and listened to it secretly. One day, they brought "Jesus Christ Superstar" on two vinyl records. We listened to it and copied it to magnetic tape - it was like alien music, we had never heard anything like it
Спасибо, точно. У меня даже все слова были, у нас на инфаке распространяли подпольно
@ А вот и нет. Я закончила музыкальную школу и оперу слушала и люблю. Так что Вы ошибаетесь к сожалению

One of the most important lessons in vocal styling EVER, Ian Gillan ruled every note he ever sang! Simple truth. Argue THAT!
The true voice of Jesus Christ Superstar
kneelandpray2 awesome
Definitely a splendid voice. Personally I admit I prefer Ted Neeley's rendition, is more felt, more role related - not for nothing, he is (predominantly) an actor while Gillian is a (superb) singer.
Gillan blows the doors off Neely version. Neither is bad, again it's the actor vs the rock singer. The album had some heavy duty singers like Johnny Gustafson and Murray Head in addition to Gillan. I have the cassette
kneelandpray2 the original.
Non sapevo che la prima versione della rock opera fosse stata cantata da Ian Gillan!!!! E' stata una scoperta eccezionale!
Мурашки по телу и слезы на глазах..... Такое былвет не часто.
I saw Ian Gillan in the London production in the 70’s when I was a kid and I’ve been obsessed with this musical ever since. So powerful, so many great songs.
Wow this has stuck with me from my childhood but to have been their is amazing. I'm jealous lol ✌️❤
Ian Gillan hat die wunderbarste und kraftvollste Stimme , dle ich gehört habe!

Ian Gillan has never appeared in the theatre production. As per his own statements he was too busy with his band to even consider theatre or cinema appearances in JCS.
I am an Atheist and I love this song! It inspires the soul without wrinkling it.
What a beautiful and evocative image
@@Darrenski Inspiration requires no supernatural content in order to exist. It just pops into existence like the universe did.

Ian Gilan's version of Gethsame is the best there was, best that ever will be.
The power of Neely pales in comparison to Gillian though, but Neely is a good stage singer anyway

I love Neeleys version as well, it’s very raw
the voice of Jesus! what singing!
Gillan, the best❤❤
I’ve listened to so many excellent versions of this but with respect, none come close to the emotion Ian expresses, it doesn’t feel like a performance it feels like he’s exoressing what’s happening to him, genius ❤️

One of the best songs from one of the best singers and one of the best plays ever!!!
