That was all they wanted, and they wanted it done immediately after getting Sputnik 1 up. There just wasn’t any time to hash out a safe return system or even a means to gather useful data. Laika was supposed to be put down in orbit via poison, but she didn’t even live long enough for that, as Sputnik 2’s lack of proper heat shielding ensured that she died of heatstroke soon after achieving orbit.

Here's what more interesting, it could be both. Firts the Heat Death and then the Big Crunch. It's a wild guess based on the PV5, the scene at 00:40 where there's bunch of circle im guessing it's a stars, planet etc getting pulled into one point. Honestly the existence of the Observer is just an illusion. Because you need this kind of mysterious entity for the story. That's why the existence of Priestess is important.
Me i saw Observers as a sort of Metaphor like is just an "entity" and phenomenon that just have to happen in the Universe (?) and fight against is vain

It’s implied she won’t survive. Her sarcophagus isn’t like the ones in Preserver’s bunker because of Terra’s more primitive technology. Although, possibilities are still open. Kristen and the scientists aren’t stupid. They built her sarcophagus as close to the real one as possible with the tools they have. If the sarcophagi of the Doctor’s people are able to put them in cryostasis for thousands of years, them maybe Kristen’s will last her for hundreds, maybe enough for her to reach Endfield 500 years into the future.
