  • On Aug. 23, 1968, a sapper attack at FOB 4 killed 16 Green Berets in one night
Larry with RT Rattler took out enemy mortar teams which prevented the body count from going higher. At one point, Larry was along on the mountain...

My grandfather was a spooky gunner 68-69 and was stationed a Da Nang at this time. There is a fifty-fifty chance that he flew this mission that night as There was only one other flight crew at the time. Practically every night of his one year in country was spent flying these overwatch and fire support missions. I have the deepest respect and admiration for the veterans of Tet. Thank you all for your sacrifices.

"A sapper, also called pioneer or combat engineer, is a combatant or soldier who performs a variety of military engineering duties, such as breaching fortifications, demolitions, bridge-building, laying or clearing minefields, preparing field defenses, and road and airfield construction and repair."

      you wrote,
      about the sappers
      or
" I had to look it up,"
      in other words,
      I didn't know.
      While reading I reason
      you were a soldier.
      In my perspective of life,
      above the military soldiers
      and everyone and everything
      in and of life
      humble exceeds each

I thought a "sapper" was a soldier-engineer who planted explosive and whatnot to undermine fortifications. Googling this, I found that "sappers" was a term used by US soldiers to describe specially trained North Vietnamese units who combined traditional sapper skills with marine-style assault skills.

    • @RealKisht
      @RealKisht 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

Yea its kind of an appropriation of the original term. NVA and VC sappers would use explosives though to get through the wire and take down posts. Most of the time killing themselves in the process. If you're familiar with the movie platoon, nearing the end, Dale Dye's character and his whole command post is taken out when an NVA sapper runs into their tent, blowing himself up.

When you think about soldiers that were in Vietnam i think they were pretty much working the whole time. I'm sure nothing was fun about it. Especially the ground troops you're technically working the whole time. As scary as it was people on watch would fall asleep constantly, from complete exhaustion. That would be terrible knowing what you could get into if you sleep and you still pass out.

58 thousand Americans lost their life and over a million injured. Plus when they came home a lot of our great veterans were mis treated. I feel that many of them our American heros never got the credit that they truly deserve. I humbly ask all Americans next time you see a veteran let them know how appreciative you are for their blood sweat and tears. Many died, many lost an arm, or a leg some lost their life. God bless you all Amen 🙏

When we arrived back in Germany after almost a year in Ramadi (11-05 to 10-06) we attended a huge event with great food and free beer to celebrate being home. It was a wonderful night and it felt great to be back. That actually made it extremely difficult for me to spend much time with the parents of one of our KIA. Most of my friends were hanging out with them telling stories, doing shots, laughing and having a great time. I tried but had to excuse myself. I found it hard to feel ok while facing the parents of one of my dead friends. I am envious of my friends who were able to do it right. I honestly believe that night helped his parents in many ways. I am grateful for their strength and courage, and glad they were able to spend that time with the parents, and just as happy that the parents had the opportunity to spend that time hearing great stories about their son from some of his greatest friends.

In Rolla Missouri we have a veterans park with different plaques for different units and different services. I’d love to see the SOA send info so we could get a plaque and memorial set up. If it interests you reply here and we will get togather and I will get with the vfw and others about it and if it can be done love to see you guys come. Thank you for everything everyone in SOG went thru

I thank God that Americans like this still exist, and I'm so glad they made it back to tell the story. Unbelievable.
