    Mr. Mtume. Undisputed legend!!! One, if not, the many reasons I begin to listen to old school classic R&B from the '70s and '80s. Every time I discover a record from that era, I'm eager to put it in my Spotify playlist. I thank my parents for putting me on great R&B music.

    Mtume hit the nail in the wall, when he said, "Take the lead singer out the group, and you lose the group." Think, Left-Eye of TLC, K-Ci & JoJo of Jodeci, Sisqo of Dru Hill, Shawn Stockman of Boyz II Men, Marc Nelson of AZ Yet, Ron Isley of The Isley Brothers, Marques Hoston of Immature and later on IMX, Slim of 112, RL of Next, Patti Labelle of Labelle, Michael Jackson of The Jackson Five, Dawn Robinson of En Vogue, any member of LSG (Keith Sweat, Gerald Levert & Johnny Gill), Beyonce of Destiny's Child, Raphael Saadiq of Tony, Toni, Tone, Babyface of The Deele, Lionel Richie of The Commodores, Stokley of Mint Condition, Tony Thompson of Hi-Five, Coko of SWV, Teddy Riley (as a music producer) of Blackstreet and Guy, Aaron Hall of Guy, Kandi of Xscape, Brian and Brandon Casey of Jagged Edge, Meelah of 702, Renee Neufville of Zhane, Omarion of B2K, Jeffrey Osbourne of L.T.D., Teddy Pendergrass of Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, Amel Larrieux or Bryce Wilson (as a music producer) of Groove Theory, Eddie Kendricks of The Temptations, Jody Watley of Shalamar, Luther Vandross of Change, Patti Labelle of Labelle, Nicci Gilbert or Kina of Brownstone and countless many others. - @TerrenceHanton

      Left eye was never lead singer of TLC and Dawn Robinson wasn't lead singer of en vogue. Boys II men took turns singing lead between Shawn and Wanya. David Ruffin was the original lead singer of The Temptations.

    • @ralphhemphill3989

      Howard Hewett was the lead singer of Shalamar

    • @playboyv12
      @playboyv12 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Were these lead singers pushed out or wanted to start their own band?
      Was Phil Collins pushed out of Genesis or did he want do his own thing? Freddie Mercury and Queen? Glenn Frey and Don Henley of The Eagles?
      The list goes on and on. Not a race thing.
      James Mtume is great but not sure he's right with this one.

  • @MimiMoments

    THIS WAS SO GOOD I WATCHED IT TWICE BACK TO BACK. More older people please. A lot of the people in my generation need more. Many of us have young parents who can't share a perspective like this. My grandparents are all deceased. This was great & I am not even interested in being a part of the music industry.
    Greatest takeaways:
    "Everything has to die in order for something new to come"
    "The assumption of victory is a dumb refuge to seek.. you gotta work it through."

    Peace....His work and catalog is timeless and influential. The list of iconic singers he's worked with is massive.. He's a truth teller and teacher,ALWAYS has been. I cant wait for his forthcoming UNSUNG episode! He was one of the first producers to give Luther Vandross and Gwen Guthrie a break. He was also one of the last people to see Donny Hathaway alive (he recorded Donny &Roberta's song Back Together hours b4 Donny committed suicide).. I am 40 yrs old and was in love with the song juicy fruit in my younger days. I had know idea it was about oral sex. I would sing 🎤 along to the words, but I guess it never registered with me what the song was about. But now that makes me like it even more.

      They were slick, but not vile. Today the singer's just straight up sing about oral sex. Back in the day, it was more subtle.

    People telling youngsters to listen, but in reality, this is for ears for any age. Old timers till today still have immature mentality. Theres a saying "you learn till you die". James Mtume is a wise man. God bless this man. Im an oldtimer myself and i learned knowledge and wisdom from this man.
