Mtume on Sampling, Art and Writing Hits | Red Bull Music Academy

  • In this lecture at the Red Bull Music Academy Tokyo 2014, Mtume opens up about his history, sampling and the fluidity of art.
James Mtume’s discography is as peerless as it gets. From crafting iconic LPs with Miles Davis, to sought-after spiritual jazz, Mtume’s jazz chops are undeniable. But it was Mtume’s transition from jazz pioneer to R&B master in his own group Mtume, that really set him apart from his peers. Mtume straddled these two worlds with ease, putting some consciousness into the club, and turning the sex appeal sanctified. Teaming up with Reggie Lucas, the duo were an unstoppable force through the ’80s, penning such hits as Stephanie Mills’ Grammy-winning “Never Knew Love Like This Before” and Roberta Flack’s “The Closer I Get to You.” There’s a reason Mtume the band has been sampled countless times: Mtume has consistently lit the way for future generations, on how to do it legit.

Not enough people watched this. Mtume is a legend. He may not be as well known as some of the other greats but his influence in the game is heavy. This is a gem of an interview. Kudos #RedBull

He's the only guy I know who was with his own groups so brilliant deeeep into spiritual jazz (Mtume Umoja ensemble - Alkebu-Lan = superrare double album on Strata East) and r&b-disco-funk (Juicy fruit etc.). Respect, man!!

A great interview. I met Mtume and Jimmy Heath in person when I was a high school student. I recall his Strata East album and his work with Miles Davis. He is an unheralded giant in modern music.

I'm glad that he shared his memories, music experience, thoughts, philosophy, point of view and wise words with us. I really appreciate and love his music. I remember the first time I heard Juicy Fruit, it was in 2001 or 2002 and I thought it was a brand new beat. I'm still hooked on it to this day. I have a lot of his works to discover. Much respect for James Mtume.

In 1983 i got aware about Mtume with the song "Juicy Fruit" - Afterwards i was surprised about the huge outlets of music that came prior and after that.
I`m glad i found this interview and cant believe it went under my radar for years!
I will save it and crack a bag of peanuts open and watch & listen intensively to what this legend has to say later in all comfort.

Mr James Mtume! I gotta thank yoo sir! As of now, you are 10 years more me!, and still looking strong, sharp and as great as always. So big brother has a young brother who isn't young anymore! I remember the eighties and the Disco Funk parties (I was in Africa). I really loved Kool and the Gang, George Benson and the like; then one day, I listened to 'Juicy Fruits' by you, Mr Mtume! Game changer, I was impreaseed by the new sound, the beats, and the harmonic background; something between Jazz, Funk and R&R. I thought to myself... that's genius! Then later on, I'm wasn't surprised everyone wanted a sampling of your 'smash hit'.
NB. Those who turned their thumbs down may be from another planet 🤣

I hate that the music industry dont give singers/songwriters their flowers while they live. For him co-writing "The Closer I Get To You" for that along he should have been celebrated when he was alive! Thats 1 of the best love ballads ever written. When ever I hear Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway; I think about that song.

In response to what he said about jazz musicians sharing their knowledge with one another, I think a plausible explanation for cats these days not sharing with each other, is because people from this generation don't necessarily share the same moralities as people back then. People are more fake and willing to steal intellectual property these days. It's just a byproduct of what Western society has become. It's very hard to trust people these days. On the other hand though, as he said, no drastic advancements are being made in music these days, so how much valuable knowledge is contained within modern artists anyways? Anyways, great lecture. Supper intelligent dude. Peace, Mtume!
