Episode 21: Washed Out
Another two-part covering two major Amtrak derailments in Vermont & Arizona caused by the washout of track embankments.
Part 1: Essex Junction, VT
On the morning of July 7, 1984, the northbound Amtrak Montrealer was derailed by a washed-out culvert between Williston and Essex, Vermont. Heavy rains over the previous night had broken beaver dams upstream, resulting in a 50-foot (15 m) washout in the 20-foot-high (6 m) embankment. Five of the train's thirteen cars fell into the stream, with one sleeper car buried under several other cars. Three passengers, one Amtrak attendant, and one Central Vermont Railway crew member were killed; 29 others were seriously injured. The resulting rescue operation involved extricating dozens of trapped passengers and was then the largest in Vermont history.
Part 2: Kingman, AZ
On August 9, 1997, the eastbound Amtrak Southwest Chief derailed on a bridge which had been partially swept away in a flash flood. Out of the 309 people on the train, 116 suffered injuries. No lives were lost but much of the credit for the survival of the train's occupants must go to the construction methods used in today's railways, both in terms of the track and the rail vehicles. The NTSB eventually blames BNSF management for improper inspection of bridges.

These were the locomotives from the Kingman crash and what happened to them:
P42DC 47 Repaired, was written off and scrapped after a collision with a CSX freight after going through a misaligned switch.
P42DC 80 repaired, was involved in a vehicle accident and likely written off
P42DC 50 repaired and still in service
P42DC 52 repaired and still in service
I heard that the Southwest Chief derailed 3 times, including this time, and once in 1998 and once more in 1999. No fatalities resulted in any of the derailments. The Southwest Chief may be an unlucky train, but it might just be the toughest, too.
Yeah i agree the SW Chief is DEFINITELY the toughest train ever because all locos and coaches were repaired & returned to service.

Inspite of the terrible mishap August 1997 fortunately there were no fatalities I m not sure I remember August 8th and 9th 1997 I have n t been on an Amtrak train since October 1995 going to and from THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST ( OREGON )

Sadly, 47 and 80 have been removed from service. 47 was in the February 4, 2018 collision, and 80 was involved in a vehicle strike. As a result, both engines will never run again.

On July 7th, 1984 after 4th, Amtrak Train 60 Montrealer derailed at 6:50 a.m. before noon.

Today marks the 23rd anniversary of the 1997 kingman az derailment and it's quite a surprise that 2 decades after this derailment one of the locomotives 47 to be exact would be scrapped after colliding with a csx train.

@@thereallincolntakanashi yep it's not aswell known . The four rarest santa Fe locomotives as this train was known including 5 month old sd40-2 5037 and 3 other locomotives running elephant style. Heavy rains had inundated the San Gabriel mountains in the month leading up to the wreck. The train was pulling 47 autoracks when they hit a washout at the crest at summit. A giant sinkhole opened up just as 5037 cleared the gap. However the weight of the other engines sheared off everything behind the cab and plunged into a muddy hell. Two deadheading crew members were killed and all 4 locomotives were destroyed

i live on the "Empire Builder" route in NE montana..... and have only once seen a "box car" on the empire builder
and that was during X-mas (back when the train was WAY more popular and had more passengers)

most empire builder trains have 8 to 10 cars (plus 1 baggage) and only 2 locos..... but sometimes 3 in the winter

but with 3 locos on a 9 car train..... it REALLY gets up to speed QUICK AF!!!!!!

if Amtrak wants to make money again
they need NEW cars (wifi, places to charge your phone..... AKA 2020 and not 1986)

and they should also look into making a 5500 to 6000+HP loco (with pass use... it should last longer than the 6000hp freight units)
or simply strapping 2 to 3 locos on every train

it would make them accelerate WAY faster..... and be able to hold track speed on steep grades

this would cause them to be only 30 mins late..... vs 3 HOURs late
and they would not have to speed (as they can make up the time by just getting up to speed MUCH faster)

47 was repaired, it would later write away and be scrapped after going through the wrong switch, falling into the siding, and colliding with a CSX manifest train.
80 was repaired, it would also later write away and be scrapped after hitting a school bus with lots of children onboard at a grade crossing in the morning and derailing the whole train, killing all the students and the bus driver onboard.
50 and 52 were repaired and remain active today.
