  • We're 6 miles deep in the Sequoia National forest, camping alongside the largest river in the Southern Sierra! There's native Rainbow trout in this river and we need to go catch some for a delicious catch and cook...so let's goooooooooo!!!!!
    ______
    I encourage all who are interested, to read Tim Huckaby's article on how the Kern River Rainbow trout has been compromised by the hybridization with non-native Rainbow trout. 👇🏻

    check out the spot pattern differences between the two KRRs you harvested. that first one is as pure strained as one could hope for. notice the peppery spots below the lateral line from head to tail. and next time we fish let's work on fighting and landing a fish that gets downriver from you. because you either chase it or you turn downriver and swing it to the bank. pulling them up river against the current rarely works. awesome video and even a more fun trip - thanks. -tim

      So cool….so then maybe the KRR just starts developing their eggs in the fall for a spring time spawn? I gotta look into development time for trout eggs…
      And thanks Tim for the tips! Can’t wait to implement!

    Just a FYI rainbow trout all spawn in the spring not the fall regardless of region. Brown trout on the other hand spawn in the fall. Another good piece of knowledge is they stock 8,000 rainbows in this river, so the fish may be native originally but your catching hatchery stocked trout which have little to no genetic diversity.

    • @UntilJourneysEnd
      @UntilJourneysEnd  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually that’s not always true. The Upper Owens river sees thousands of rainbow trout swim up from Crowley lake and spawn between late December and late February. Now one thing to take into account is that these fish aren’t in their native habitat which could be a clue to why their behavior differs to most rainbow trout. But, in most cases yes, you’re right!
      They only stock triploid fish on the Upper Kern below Fairview dam. And it’s way more than 8,000 fish. They stopped stocking diploid trout ABOVE fairview dam years ago. This video was many, many miles up stream of Fairview dam. But, that does not mean the Kern River Rainbow hasn’t hybridized with the non-native rainbows that were stocked above the dam from years ago. In fact folks whom I’ve fished with - who’ve fished the Upper Kern for decades - have noticed Rainbows that have characteristics of Kern River Rainbows, but with markings and behaviors of a seemingly different trout. They’ve also been witnessing spawning like behaviors from Kern River Rainbows in the late fall. So we’re attempting to conduct on foot studies of these fish to see if their hybridization has caused them to have similar spawning behaviors as those Upper Owens fish.

      @@UntilJourneysEnd Never heard of rainbows doing this but hey like you said it's not their native habitat either. PS I wasn't trying to be rude just figured it was worth saying something.

      Neither had I until I moved to California 😄 haha
      You did not come off rude bro. I’ve been learning a lot about this watershed and I wanted to add to what you said in that this river is indeed a native rainbow trout river, but it’s also under the threat of hybridization of non-native rainbows.
      I appreciate you adding to the conversation man!
