  • We're heading deep into a remote section of the Upper Kern river in the Sequoia National Forest, in search of the stunning native Kern River Rainbow trout that have called this river home for thousands of years! To make things even more exciting (MORE EXCITING? OH YES...), 30 year fly fishing guide and fly maker Tim Huckaby, has offered to teach me FLY FISHING!
    This episode will forever be a bookmark trip for me. The first, of many more fly fishing adventures to come 🪰🎣

      What “older gentleman?” You mean the guy who hiked in with a 50 lbs pack to the Huck Site?

    Tim seems to be a great teacher and nice guy! Do you need a bear canister when backpacking there in the golden trout wildness? Where do you get overnight backpacking permit?

      He definitely is! I bring bear spray not so much for the black bears as for that one random weirdo you might encounter 8 miles into the backcountry. 98% of the people I've met are always solid folks. But I have ran into a few people where you question if their head is screwed on right.
      Talking black bears - they're so rarely aggressive more so curious and want to get into your food. If a black bear doesn't spook and run away when you make noise and throw rocks, it's lost it's fear of humans. That's when the bear spray comes in. A bear who's lost its fear of humans is more likely to get aggressive, have to be tranquilized and moved to a new location, and ultimately killed if it comes back to it's original territory (more so when it comes back, as many do). Spraying a bear who won't go away not only prevents an attack, but could save the bears life.
      For backcountry permits, check this link out!

      @@UntilJourneysEnd thanks for you reply. I actually meant to ask whether you need to use bear Resistant Food Container for food storage just like in John Muir Wilderness.

    Did you guys discuss the importance of water temps?

    • @UntilJourneysEnd
      @UntilJourneysEnd  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We did ☺️ I didn’t capture that on camera, but water temp is definitely something I make an effort to talk about when the situation calls for it 👍🏼👍🏼

    Absolutely a pleasure and a total blast fishing with Micah! I'm humbled and embarrassed by all these nice things he said about me. His joy of the wilderness is infectious. His talent in film-making is impressive. Can't wait to fish with Micah again. He's a fly fisherman now....

    Also I noticed you filled your bottle with the river water, were you able to drink it right out of the river or did you have to treat it before drinking?

    • @UntilJourneysEnd
      @UntilJourneysEnd  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ahhhh you bring up a great point that I actually should have made clear in the episode….My bottle was a Katadyn which has a special water filter installed in the cap. I would not recommend drinking any water without proper filtration!

      I put micah on a TFO NXT black 5 wt. I'm a TFO pro. i love that company. Micah already bought that tfo NXT black rod kit. he also casted one of my winston B3s.... but, for his marriage's sake thank god he didn't get hooked on that one. it's a bit pricey :)

      It was 4.2miles to the Hucksite! But there are closer sites at roughly the 2 mile mark! Tough hike back up, but it would be an amazing experience.

      This trailhead was the Forks of the Kern. Hard to day hike, but great for backpacking!
