The anti-piracy in Mr. Gimmick for the NES is terrifying. It's just a killscreen near the end of the game with nothing but white text in the middle saying "black hole". Imagine being in a poor family and getting a pirated version of Mr. Gimmick for Christmas and then that happens.

The Jak and Daxter one reminded me of Spore. In the second lifecycle where you're on land, there is a creature that will kill you if you travel too far in the ocean. Its larger then any creature and is the only creature that can't be killed to my knowledge. I found it so scary as a kid because it just happens instantly. Yo-Kai Watch 4 has a few designs that could be scary for a child. Lets say you were a kid who loved the Franchise andolayed all three of the games and moved on to 4 you really liked the sweet and innocent granpa yo-kai, Hungramps, and couldn’t wait to see him in the new game. Just to see that he turned into a demon that eats people. There are many more yo-kai from the first three games that go through form changes like this, some scarier than others, but nonetheless I could see this shaking up a kid if not downright scaring them.

I don’t know if ace attorney would count as a family friendly game considering the themes of murder, but on the other hand it’s mostly wholesome dialogue with inoffensive humor and nothing overtly creepy happens in the series that is until the final case of dual destinies which arguably the darkest case in the series based on the implications behind it and the imaginary used in it which resulted in the game getting an M rating at the time.
Basically it centers around the idea of a mom who put their daughter through multiple experiments centered around monitoring emotions and seemingly caused her to go insane and kill her with a knife. Of course going through the case we find that’s not what happened, but it still makes the accused look like psychopathic child who happily murdered their mother especially when it shows an image of them smiling covered in blood.

One thing from a very popular game that no one talks about: in Wind Waker, the first dungeon is a volcano area with a short outside section where you climb up the side of the volcano. Nothing wrong so far. The thing is, the game has a day/night cycle, but the first time you visit this area it will always be day time and there's no reason to come back here after you're done. However, you're free to do so, and if you come at night, there's a bug that makes the night sky clouds pitch black, and it TERRIFIED me. It doesn't even looks like clouds, more like giant globs of dark matter conquering the skies, or like Link's reality is falling apart. It's a bug so it happens just like that with no explanation or reaction from the game or its characters, you're just face to face with terror. This game already scared me a little with its endless ocean (especially when at the edge of the world and there's straight nothing in the distance) but this one took this fear of giant things and pushed it to the next level.
Also this works on the Gamecube version, I don't know if it's still there on the Wii U version.

Some of Tomodachi Life's dream sequences creeped me out when I played it as a teen. Not terrifying or anything. Just...eerie. Specifically i remember there was one where you're driving at night in a forest and theres a bobblehead on the dashboard. Another creepy dream is one where a mii is walking alone through a dark forest with a skeleton keychain on their backpack. I was certain those two in particular were gonna have some sort of jumpscare but there never was.
Theres one where a giant mii slowly rises from the water and scares another mii. Another one where a mii is in like a dining room and the windows open then your 3ds camera turns on. The mirror ones, hide and seek, or ninja dreams are also a little eerie.

I have one! In Sonic Adventure 2, when they play the video diary that hold the manifesto and last words of Gerald Robotnik. Everything starts going wrong on the Space Colony the cast is on, and the video starts. It details his grief and his plan to kill everyone, and even more chilling is that at the end of it, a soldier asks if he has anything else to say, and when Gerald says “no”, the soldier calls “READY!”-as in, the footage cuts literally seconds before Gerald is killed by firing squad.

I'm currently playing this game, but know some points of it get creepy/messed up.
Madou monogatari is a Japan exclusive game with fanmade English translations available online, for the Japanese game system PC-98.
In madou monogatari 1 (pc-98), you play as Arle, a 4-6 year old girl who goes through a tall tower as a graduation test for her magic kindergarten.
Because I'm still early in, the full story is something I don't fully know yet, but the tower is full of horrifying enemies such as skeletons, rotting corspes, and actual demons who got in somehow.
Your final attacks/enemy attacks/deaths can also be graphic, such as a werewolf catching fire and dying in a massive blaze, or the rotting corspes exploding from parasites within it (or having it's face fall off and it proceeds to just shamble to you for the rest of the fight), and one enemy has its eyeball come out of its skull from you hitting it too hard.
But one of the more well known scary moments is a fake ending you get before the final boss - you think you leave the tower and see your friends from school. They happily congratulate you, only to slowly melt and their voices distort into zombie-like groans. Pc-98 is one of the worst versions of this scene, btw.
Luckily the horrific vision goes away, leading to the final boss and the kids are all actually ok outside the tower, but that is still a freaky scene.
Insane to know that most of Madou Monogatari cast has a slightly better life in Puyo Puyo (spin off series)

      @Shadria1996 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

I feel like I need to mention that the gory bits, besides the vision of your friends dying and the werewolf ablaze, are all text.
The visuals for them are all in your head and that can make it scarier. Looking at the well done sprites and imagining the effects of your actions can be scarier than the sprite work.

So, I've been watching this series for a while now and I haven't seen anyone talking about it, but when I was a kid and I played Golden Sun: Dark Down on my DS there's a part where the mood of the game changes completely
In a little over the half of the game, there's a part where half of the world is plunged into shadows. Inside this shadows stronger monsters appear and fights become generally harder inside, but the part that used to unnerve me when I was a kid is that some towns that were inside the shadow are now filled with the corpses of the people who used to live there and I if I recall correctly, one of your companions can listen to them to hear what they thought about before dying or while they are dead, lying around the empty town

Not sure if anyone else has said this one yet, but in the Party Mode of Sonic and the Secret Rings, there’s this minigame called “Watch Out! Trap.” It’s a luck-based one where you have to guess which locks are safe and which ones are traps (ei which ones summon these weird rock monsters). It’s always unnerved me for the following reasons:
    1. There’s none of the usual quirky music. Just an ominous ambiance.
    2. The designs of the rock monsters. Maybe it was just the graphics, but to me they’re somewhat unsettling.
    3. Whenever a trap is sprung by picking the wrong lock, whatever Sonic character you’re playing as starts COWERING IN FEAR, as if they already know their fate.
Was anyone else rattled by this minigame, or was it just me?

I’m someone who doesn’t really get scared from a lot of jumpscares and surface level stuff (yes I can jump and get spooked, but rarely SCARED), but real things, real awful things, they scare me. The Kirby mecha planet thing with the father who basically did nothing wrong, but had to be murdered for the greater good… that’s scary. That is real fear
Haha whoops I think I did a bit long of a message here, didn’t mean to do that haha so ‘derp’ am I right

In Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles, you can find an old love letter lodged in a tree in the town of Tida (which is a whole place of terror all on its own) left by someone who fled the village many years ago.
Throughout the towns, there are two elderly NPCs you can choose to show the letter to if you happen to talk to them after getting the letter. They act shocked after showing them and disappear without any mention as to what's going on.
If you go back to that same tree in Tida you found the letter, you will find the two NPCs bodies leaning against the tree embracing each other. Both are dêãd. They traveled to that place to reunite and they süfføçated in the toxic, unbreathable atmosphere. Later back in town, the grand daughter of the old man mentions how he went off one day and she hasn't seen him since.
You help an old couple unalive themselves, and you don't realize it until it's too late. It's a bittersweet ending to a random side quest. Discovering that as a kid was pretty unsettling ngl. Always feel so guilty after doing that quest.

I've got another scary Kirby moment-- it's not the MOST terrifying thing in the Kirby lore by far, but it freaked me out the first time I played it. In Kirby's Epic Yarn (which is quite possibly the cutest and most wholesome game ever made, fight me), there's a level called Deep-Dive Deep where you're down in the deep ocean, and there are these giant angler fish that try to suck you into their mouth and eat you. You can't die in the game, so they're not much of a threat at first glance, but eventually you come across this huge mound of what seems to be glowing algae. As you swim past it, an even BIGGER angler emerges from the algae and starts chasing you, covering the entire side of the screen. I've always hated chase sequences in games and this one caught me off-guard real bad, especially since it's in a game as cutesy as this. It doesn't help that there's yet ANOTHER angler chase sequence on your way back up, although the scare factor has somewhat worn off by then.

That level was actually the only one that set me off.

megaman legends 1... i dunno if this count as family friendly game... it looks family friendly from the surface... but the intro stage for megaman legends 1 is so creepy for me... a really dark dungeon dig site ruin infested with violent reaverbots that had various patterns of creepy eye designs on them... with the music being so ominously terror inducing... and you can hear the creepy creaking of those reaverbots hiding in the dark or behind walls and doors just out of your sights... and in some of the dig sites, the jumpscares from the snake worm reaverbots still make me shudder in revulsion to this day...
megaman legends 1 offers a very contrasting atmosphere for me... it had bright colorful kids-friendly adventurous artstyle design... kicking the can in the market street of megaman legends 1 is so nostalgic... and yet when you descend into the mysterious dungeon dig sites ruin and fighting the pirates, the theme suddenly starts shifting into otherworldly horror mixed with real life tragedies of wars. the bonnes pirates might look like ridiculous team rocket plus despicable me minions gang of clown pirates, but when they raid the towns and fighting megaman... they wouldn't hesitate to murder and destroy anything in their way (despite tron bonne having a crush on megaman)... i remember crying when the megaman and roll's airship the flutter gets destroyed when i fail to defeat the bonnes' gesselschaft airship... also kinda shocked when i see megaman can die from being run over by civilian cars...
also, the title screen is somehow scary too with no music at all, the background is a mysterious wall section of some reaverbots dig site and low lighting, but then the bonnes' servbots/kobun occasionally walks into the screen doing some silly servbots comedy routines but with dead eyes... seriously, the title screen for megaman legends 1 feels more creepy than family friendly...
reaverbots+their dig sites ruins and the bonnes suddenly turning from klutzy silly clown pirates into murderous pirates are the stuff of nightmares for my childhood...

I remember one of the more weirdly intense moments ive seen in a GBA game was a Revenge of the Sith adaptation that used something like a mix between the movie itself and Gennedy Tartakovski Clone Wars for its visual aesthetic. Looks a bit bouncier and the combat isn't exactly pulse poundingly deep. The animations are passable but they clearly made a lot of sprites that could pull double duty. They only barely shiw off Dooku's death in any detail, with one dedicated sprite of him kneeling and Maybe missing his hands.
So, when it gets to the Obi-Wan vs Grievous fight, you expect him to just fall over like Dooku, with maybe one sprite of visible damage... and see they lovingly recreated Grievous being incinerated in his own exoskeleton, his burnt out husk going limp on its feet, then keeling over lifelessly, it kind of took me off guard.
The console version was also kind of intense because yeah it was a closer and more detailed adaptation, but it also had more overtly graphic animations for hacking clone troopers apart, chilling death screams for in-game combat performed by most of the actual cast, and an alternate ending if you play the final battle in two player mode where Vader wins the fight on Mustufar by killing Obi-Wan, successfully betrays Sidious and kills him too, then takes over the Empire for himself.

Most of the things they do lean more towards goofy or annoying then scary, with the worst thing they can normally do is waking up your sim while they are sleeping by playing the stereo or watching TV. However, three variants added by the expansions can actually do some troublesome or spooky things, specifically the Gnome of the Darned, Magical Vampire Gnome, and Evil Mr Gnome.

Decided to share some of my traumatic experiences from the childhood:
    1. Hugo: The Evil Mirror (PC) - the final boss with chase sequence, when the giant head chases you on the rainbow bridge and music is all intense, it was enough for me to quit the game and never go back to it again.
    2. Sims 1 (PC) ambience at night and ghost music, had nightmares about that little graves and ghosts for years.
    3. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (the 1st HP game, PC), the ambience is creepy too, but I had nightmares about Peeves and Baron ghosts, also it always creeped me out how there are so much flying faceless ghosts in the game.
Also, the chase sequence with troll was so terrifying for me that my mom had to play it and beat it 😅
    4. As you can assume with what I said earlier, I never liked chase sequences in the games, they terrified me and my heart would beat like crazy, so when you take the game that is based almost only on chase, you can bet that I had really hard time with it. Pink Panther: Pinkadelic Pursuit (PC) was really colorful and fun, but all that unnerving sound effects when you steal something and how the music changes when somebody chases you, it was making me sweat.

Did anyone who grew up on the PS1 played the game I.Q.? More specifically, the demo version? I always thought it was meant to have some horror elements behind it considering you play the demo levels in silence. Only hearing the echoing of your footsteps, the cubes moving towards you, and the dreaded sounds if you messed with with the narrator scolding you to do it again while the platform you are on is getting smaller and smaller.
Also the sound of being pushed off into the black void of nothing as your characters screams for their life.

The biggest horror part in the Kirby series is Kirby himself.
He's an entity of Void. He has virtually limitless power. And, as revealed in Star Allies, if he was having a bad day he could easily destroy entire worlds. The people in the Kirby universe have to count their blessings that unless you threaten his friends or his planet, it is literally impossible to piss Kirby off to that degree.
The final bosses of the games - which include eldritch horrors, physical gods, reality-warping supercomputers and planet-assimilating parasites - really didn't know what they were in for until they backed the pink puff into a corner. And likely spent their last moments alive regretting doing that.

The game Gregory Horror Show is a 13+ game, so idk if it'd count here, but it's technically a kids game. My memories are a bit blurry, but I've seen it online, so I do know it exists. Idk if you've already talked about it, but it's a game where you are stuck in this (if I remember correctly) hotel, and you need to collect sould for Death in order to escape. Death even gives you a child's body to possess in order to do so, since you don't have your own. If a character you're trying to steal the soul of catches you, there's a thing called a Horror Show, where they play a scene in which they attack you. The ending of the game implies that you created this frightening hotel to escape from reality, and although you escaped, you might go back to it again for that reason. Even the character designs themselves are a bit eerie, especially Gregory, and old mouse/rat with scraggly blonde hair that gives of the cliché "scary movie, creepy old man" vibe, and his mother. It's based off of an anime by the same name, which you can find a large portion of on TH-cam. If you need more info on the game, I'm pretty sure there is a review for it on TH-cam, as well, that goes over basically the entire game and it's story.
Extra bit: This isn't necessarily a game moment, but I think it does explain a lot of the content in games like Yokai Watch being a bit darker, so I think it'd be a nice mention here in the comments. A lot of kids content around the world has different standards, like the USA not being allowed to show guns, while most of Europe can. I've found that in Japan, particularly, they seem to be a bit more lenient on some things which a lot of other places believe might scare kids (though, that might just be because Japanese media has become more popular worldwide recently, and a lot of other countries might also have creepy kids media and games). A good example is Popee the Performer, a pretty violent animated show that aired on a kid's channel called Kids Station.
