I'm 80. I've been an artist pretty much all my life, BS, MFA. My wife and I have worked many types of jobs to support our family. I sold my art for a few years, but when I retired I didn't pursue art as a commercial endeavor anymore, but decided to paint what I wanted to paint instead of what sold. My wife is a poet. We now think of our art as prayer and consider the Lord as having authority over our interaction with others. When my wife and I turned our life over to Christ 45 years ago we decided to act as if we believed He was going to put us where he wanted, especially in those areas that we had no control over. Together we endeavor to be aware of God being the God of "ordinary" things and express this in our art. My life was changed by a clerk's smile in a hardware store at Christmas 45 years ago, for instance. Thanks so much for these inspiring interviews.

As a landscape painter of 25+ years, I enjoyed this articulate and unpretentious interview tremendously! Very unusual to come across grounded reality in an industry which is so often "smoke and mirrors". Thank-you!
You should check out a book called How Art Works by Ellen Winner. It has great confirmations of Peterson's claims about art though it does not go so far to define art. Rather it looks at the psychology of what happens to the viewer when they are viewing art. It is great and very refreshing in a landscape of other wise misleading or purposely obscured voices.

@TH-cam music So assuming what you're referencing is correct, Jordan Peterson made the process more tedious and nuanced that it should've been. That only proves his presence wasn't needed there.
What are you trying to prove? He's still competent in other areas and a compassionate human being. If you tried to undermine him as a person because of that specific set of circumstances then you've only made a fool out of yourself.
I would love to hear more interviews on Art. This was most refreshing and as an Artist I was totally engrossed 🙏

There is beauty in art, but then there is artwork that moves you. Art speaks to your overall perception, makes you question a question that maybe you didn't know that you should ask. It makes you feel less alone in trying to find your place in this world and beyond sometimes.
Listening to people talk about how good their parents were kind of hurts sometimes. For me, I managed to be a good person by using them as an example of how you should never treat other people. But on the other hand, I always try to feel glad that I'm abnormal. I wouldn't want anyone else to have a childhood like mine. I'd be happy if I was the only one ever. I'm glad Jordan and Joe got to experience something I didn't.

Same here. There is a possibility for resentment in our case. At the end of the day it's still our choice whether to identify with our childhood or detach (forming our own identity). Good parents give the child no excuse to be resentful (as long as the broader environment also goes well ,which is usually not the case) thus guaranteeing a solid foundation from an early age.
As children of dysfunctional people, we have to form our own rules and our own approaches to life, which is incredibly risky and painful. But if we succeed, we can be much much much better parents than most. Because most people take life for granted, and were not forced to think critically about their beliefs.

This is one of my absolute favourite episodes to come out. I want to relisten to the whole episode. It’s giving me the kick I need to overcome my own limitations and strive to be so much more, artistically, in business and personally.
Interesting what you say about artists . Ive been an artist now for over 35 years I used to sell very well and enjoyed the social context but after a while I realised that I was producing art with the restrictions put upon me by these sociable situations. I remember once sitting back in a gallery and watching how many people wanted to engage properly with my work , there were a group of people but mostly people who were unknown to me . This was thrill , so I quit the gallery private party circuit and produced my work to show in very small restaurants and online , and I must say that I’m enjoying anonymity ( to an extent) and I conversing with people from all walks of life . The part that I like it when someone who doesn’t know how to converse about art writes to me and we always strike up an intimate, meaningful conversations . Much more interesting than the oh darling ‘ conversations in art galleries where S an artist one an feel like an actor on parade. I sell very little now which doesn’t bother me because I see real communication with spectators and also now that my art has more self exploration I can use what I learn from my art to teach art therapy.
There is not just one way of making and sending out of art there are a multitude of choices . Thanks to you mr Peterson for a great programme . Even if you do make me get on my high horse 😊

The trap of the intellect. Art is not optional, it is the whole point. And yet these guys agree that money is the point. Two smart individuals who have zero clue about art, quoting other individuals who were definitively not artists (i.e. Steve Jobs) to justify their ideology. J.Peterson often shows brilliance in articulating ideas, Jobs achieved phenomenal things for sure, yet none of them have any qualification (as in, actual embodiment of art) to claim what an artist should or shouldn't do with his or her art. The 1hour mark was a disappointment, I was wondering if the rest of the podcast could bring interesting concepts but then a quick google search showed that the guest (who seems like a nice person) is into ... NFT. So yeah.
Keep doing what you do, I have experienced the same thrill, seeing a stranger moved to tears because of the magical moment when they meet the fruit of your creation. It makes the magazine covers, interviews, shows, very dull in comparison.

We really enjoyed Bar Harbor, best lobster in the world and Acadia National Park was amazing. I have to admit visiting Martha’s Vineyard/ Massachusetts was my favorite. Glad your boys are doing great. Playing outside is one of the best things for children. Baking bread is fun. I’m actually cooking dinner. Chicken enchiladas. There’s a beach in the park with the most beautiful view and what felt like the coldest water. Lol I think the name of the beach was Sand Beach. Anyway, Maine is absolutely beautiful and a wonderful place for children to grow up. I know I said my favorite was Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts only because I fell in love with a cottage I can’t afford. 🤦🏻♀️ Bar Harbor was breathtaking and I found an old Sherman’s Bookstore and purchased a few books. Time Stamp 1.22.00 When I was studying my instructor, every time I would ask him a question on the subject we were studying would say " have a critical think about that " It definitely made me think deeper on the subject, and helped me come to the answer on my own. Just a random artist POV:
As an artist I have realized that a lot of people don't value the artists & their needs but only the art that benefits them. We don't have a very business oriented minds and we only crave to create more. The corporate area spits on art itself as they don't understand how much our brains work on a single piece. We are only given the minimum wage and given the bare minimum of everything as they don't understand the importance of our presence or what it's like to manage an artist. I hope artists are able to realize that the death of our free thinking minds is when we tie ourselves with the corporate people. Our medical insurances don't include our eyes yet that's what we use the most. I see a lot of us forsaken and I hope my fellow artists find themselves in a better place where they can create with their free minds.
Jordans description of hope and lose of hope is spot on. I live a life of despair . Hope is lost because of a physical disability with no diagnosis or treatment . The pain cause's my life to be smothered in suffering and the Doctor's only create and secure my place in hopelessness and despair. 2012 I bought my first smart phone, and threw TH-cam I've done my own research . Finding many possibilities that describe my suffering , with related cause's virtually matching my experiences to a tee. Many year's of brute labor and damages sustained in a head on Auto collision with my head going threw the windshield , and later a documented stroke at work a little after. The doctors act as if they are insulted by the research I've done alone. Refusing to do the proper testing. A federal reevaluation discovered and acknowledged the local hospital change and had been hiding my medical records in the year 2015 . Yet they continue down that same path today, refusing to changed the record's back. Now they say I'm cured and cut me off of disability. All without proper testing. Causing me to go threw this winter without heat or water. My situation is looks so wrong , other don't believe me and think I must not be telling the hole story, but I am. Yet the only help I can get are prayers of those that believe God will change the free will of those connected to my case. I've come to except my suffering and hold on to my faith. But all hope is lost in trying to get anybody to help exspose the truth that could treat and possibly end my suffering. So be it. This is a liar's world and I don't belong here anyways.

Yes! I've thought it would be cool for him to do a collage of the walls in his house. Like a walk through. Whenever someone asks Jordan's daughter about her childhood, she always mentions the house and the paintings. Seems like a central part of that period.

As an artist I have been waiting for this discussion for such a long time from a non classical progressive perspective. Peterson has an uncanny ability to veiw the world from an artistic lens out of the comfortable realm of absolutism and instead appreciating art because of a multitude of factors all coming together all at once. So refreshing coming from the right....
I almost passed on this, but it proved to be one of the most engaging episodes yet. Far ranging and hugely insightful on both the law and art. I am a painter and one of the worst things a client can do when commissioning is slowly spoon feed you information, as a means of control. It not only undermines your confidence, but often results in redundant work. Mercurial clients are the worst, better that they bring all their ideas to the collaboration for open discussion and give the artist a fairly free hand.

THIS, today, has saved my life one more day. Hopefully longer. I am a writer and researcher in Colorado Springs, Colorado, hunted by law enforcement, which I understand because of the set-ups perpetrated upon me, and all the supportive people they are aware of, whom help me. I write of that elsewhere. They have attemptedly, and successfully, censored me. They are aware that I write about them, and the wildly crazy situations I have found myself in. I love this interview because of my passion to understand legal positions, the importance of legal defense (in our cases) strategy, or designing a legal offense where social (or others, but this is my learned focus) issues can be brought forth into public awareness and decided upon in a legal forum of deciding what "right action" should be taken in order to ease the suffering of a plaintiff. The decisions made in our courts, and sometimes, then, continued in the Supreme Court, where facts can be presented and pondered, and decided over, for the best outcomes our Country can hope for. I am waiting for our Nation to decide to re-litigate the ability of random idiots who are randomly overturning former court decisions made by rational and sane persons of legal stature. However, I am only a citizen, an activist, and an unpaid, fact-checking writer of, yet, minimally known stature. Thank you for reminding me not to give up the last thing I have to hold onto... hope. "Hope is the last thing that dies," is one of the best quotes I have ever heard.

You genuinly remind me of one of my literature teachers, when he spoke the world was mute, he could captiavate with words the full span of my atention and nothing else had volume around him. Thank you for allowing me to listen to this conversation.
There are a few things I really wish I could tell Dr Peterson that I think would help his faith walk and give him peace. One while perspective is fluid, truth is absolute. Modern society confuses the two. Second is for him to deep dive into Biblical archeology. He does a remarkable job finding hidden.truths in the Bible, the beauty of it is the reality many passages have multiple purposes and meanings. Foreshadowing the Messiah, the lessons for humanity, for the individual, to show the generational looping and how to free yourself from it, plus the historical truths of the events happening. Thankful for people fighting for truth and to help others. Peace to everyone reading this. Take care.

She goes into places where she’s not welcome, and knows she’ll get yelled at, and still holds her ground and says what she thinks it’s true. She’s the epitome of bravery.

Thank you so very much for your body of work that we have access to Dr. Peterson. I truly enjoy it and am enlightened by it. I was just out running and listening to this interview in the Podcast form and instead of the normal breaks for advertisements, there was music. It was a physical joy. It made me see the beautiful world around me as I ran. It allowed me to feel both feel happiness that music is so wondrous and excitement for the ability to go back to the interview.

I never ever want to live a life without creating Art. When I forgot about Art for years by being busy, I always managed to go back to it. My mum and brother are good at Art.
Artists have paints, acrylics, graffiti spray cans, the rainbow coloured markers usually they find it hard to fill all the stuff into 1 room there so much of it. Actually making the process art is the goal and reason why artists make art.
As an artist, I thank you for this beautiful and careful conversation. Those mercurial and Trickster elements you speak of remind me I need to revisit Lewis Hyde’s The Gift, and Trickster Makes the World. He would no doubt be another fantastic interlocutor on this subject.
Brilliant talk. I am a novice artist - had to end my dream to study art in my 1st year at university. My father had a talent for this - which was passed onto me. My daughter has double the amount of talent I had at her age. Art and Science and Religion - In my opinion the trinity of civilization

These days, at the tender age of 41, I really have no time or patience for pretence. My real behaviour and persona are my social filters. The only people who stick around after seeing me for who I am are the only ones I want to surround myself with. I have no time to sift through all the falsehoods created during the first meeting when everybody is full of shit. It can take quite a long time and cause unnecessary grief for us to find out that somebody is not who they presented themselves as. We are not in this life to play a theatre of appeasement for others in order to meet their standards of behaviour and be liked by them. Because that way lie only self loathing and weakness. We are in this to grow our own being and character in a way *we* find optimal. Besides. In my opinion being disliked by the wrong people is just as important as being liked by the right ones. Cements your own standards.
Now I want to see Jordan's third floor with its exquisite art and beauty.

It strikes me this is a lot like eavesdropping on a therapy session…but with a therapist you wish you had… who was not afraid of explaining you to you. Beautiful…Good for Mr. Hage…wish he had had a more dysfunctional life so we could all have better insight into ourselves.
