    So thing about the whole leaving situation is that Hector DID leave with Ernesto, but on the road realized that this life wasn't what he wanted he wanted to be with his family so he decided to go back to them. That's when Ernesto poisoned him and then it seemed that Hector left and just never returned as they probably didn't get the news of his death

      Uhhmm, he didn't leave-leave? It was like a father who was too poor and has to work on a far away place so he could provide for his family. He only left temporarily with the intention of coming back. He missed coco so much that we wished to come back earlier than planned. With his love for his daughter, I don't think he has the guts to leave his daughter for good.

    This movie literally means the world to me.
    Not long after my mum passed in 2018 I met my then girlfriend (now my wife) who is Mexican. This was the first movie that we watched together and it made me cry because all I could think of was my mum's passing.
    She was so sweet to me and cuddled me. Then she said if I had a picture of my mum so she could put it on her ofrenda so she could honour her on Día de Muertos (which was only a week away from when we watched the movie). I just melted that she would want to do that.
    Now that we are married, we always make up our own ofrenda every year and celebrate Día de Muertos. It's a beautiful tradition that we happily celebrate every year together and watch Coco
    In a way this movie brought us closer together in our early stages of our relationship and I don't know what I'd ever do without the love of my life by my side, and for all that, this movie will always have a special place in my heart

    Looking back on everything Hector said before the reveal, it all makes even more sense:
    His disdain for remember me comes from the fact that a song he wrote for his daughter got turned into a Mexican pop song, and he's all on board with Un Poco Loco because that's actually a song he wrote as a crowd pleaser.

    I’m not sure where people keep getting the idea that Hectór wasn’t originally planning on coming back home? I guess it’s cause it wasn’t mentioned directly in the movie, but in the canon novelization it’s specified that he joined Ernesto on tour in the hopes of getting extra money for his family. It was always meant to be temporary. He was sending money to Imelda the whole time, so while I’m sure neither of them were psyched that he was away so often, it wasn’t like he tried to ditch her for an undetermined amount of time and then had a change of heart. It was basically a business trip. No one expects to get murdered in the middle of their work trips lol.
    Of course, I still get why Imelda reacted the way she did; even if she logically realized it wasn’t his fault he got killed, emotionally she’s still dealing with the hurt and betrayal of believing her husband left her to raise her family alone for basically a century. She needed time to process the sudden new information. And considering it was probably a couple hours at most between her hearing the truth and her jumping into Hectór’s arms after La Llorona, well… that quick of a turn around further supports the canon to me. She just had to warm up to him again :)

  • @nowthatisawesome5431
    @nowthatisawesome5431 2 ปีที่แล้ว +121

    I don’t think you really understood what happened.
    Hector DID leave his family. He left and was on the road performing with DeLaCruz.
    He was gone for months and wrote letters to his daughter.
    He left against Imelda’s wishes. He left her alone with a child to raise by herself.
    Keep in mind that it was also not common in those days for women to work. They were mostly stay at home moms. So Imelda had to figure out how to make money, and she chose making shoes.
    It wasn’t until Hector decided to go home (after being away and on the road for a very long time) that DeLaCruz murdered him, took his guitar and his songs.

    • @azulablue6988

      Huh? I was under the impression that he always had the intention of coming back. Coco kept her father's letters while he was away, which means that before Hector's death, he and Imelda were in good terms because if they're not, how would young Coco get hold of those letters. Surely mama Imelda would intercept them and would never let Coco have those letters.

    • @nowthatisawesome5431
      @nowthatisawesome5431 2 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      @@azulablue6988
      Just because Imelda let Coco see and keep the letters does not mean they were on good terms. It just means that she was not going to get in between Coco have a connection with her father. It probably helped to calm her down whenever she cried for him. She was very young after all.
      And as for Hector coming back. It’s not indicated when he said that to Imelda or how long he planned on being on the road.
      From Imelda’s perspective, he left to go follow his dream; and she stayed home and had to learn a profession in order to provide for herself and her daughter. Clearly Hector wasn’t sending money back home, or if he was, it suddenly stopped and Imelda didn’t know why.
      He still left his family. Period.

  • @phousefilms
    @phousefilms 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    "Poor Ernando." (Meaning Ernesto)
    Me: "Sure, you say that NOW...."
    Some fun facts:
    "Ernesto's"guitar has a gold tooth, because of course Hector would personalize his own guitar.
    Hector complains about musicians being "self important jerks", showing his bitterness towards De La Cruz(I always thought he was going to leave partially because of Ernesto's ego), but possibly towards himself as well for abandoning his family(remember that he said he hadn't played music for years until he did to his friend Chiccaron(the one dying "the second death".)
    After Chiccaron dies, Hector drinks one of the glasses, leaving the other full, hinting at his real death, from poisoning.
    Glad you noticed that about "Remember Me". That's also the reason Hector doesn't want Miguel singing it...it was a personal song between him and his daughter.
    Hector tries to stop Miguel when he finds the truth about his plans, largely because Hector went down that path before, abandoning his family for the sake of his "stupid musical fantasy". He doesn't want Miguel to end up like him.
    When Ernesto prepares to bless Miguel, the leaf doesn't glow(hinting he's not truly related to Miguel).
    Word of God is that Ernesto will never die the second death(his infamy will keep him alive forever). However, since his deception and evil acts are now revealed, he will never have the fame and love from the people in the real world or the land of the dead, which is what he killed to get.
    Hector doesn't wear shoes throughout the film, until the end when he's taken back by the family.

    I always love to see videos of people reaction to Coco and explain a little bit about our culture so here we go:
    - Ernesto de la Cruz is inspired by two great musicians/actors from the mexican golden age of cinema: Pedro Infante and Jorge Negrete
    - Dia de los muertos is November 2 but on November 1 we celebrate and honor all the children
    - At Ernesto's party you can see cameos of famous mexican celebrities from the mexican golden age of cinema: Cantinflas, Pedro Infante, Jorge Negrete, El Santo, Maria Felix
    - Frida Kahlo is a well known painter
    - Dante is a xoloitzcuintli which is believe that this breed of dog will help us cross the river to the other side after we die, it all depends how well you treat dogs during you life. It is said that the spots on the xoloitzcuintli are how many souls they have help
    -No, the songs played in the movie are not famous songs, they are now because of the movie though , except for La Llorona that's a well known folklore song.
    -Before Coco, the celebration of day of the dead was much celebrated on the south of the country, because here on the north we celebrate halloween better, but after Coco now day of the dead is equally celebrated in the north and south
    -This movies is the highest grossing movie IN THE HISTORY OF MEXICO.
    - The next year after the movie came out, it was played once again in cinemas in Mexico.

    little detail at 13:13 i never noticed-when miguel is totally focused on the idea of being like ernesto, he’s folding the picture on coco’s face and imelda is totally bent out of view. kind of symbolism for what following in ernesto’s footsteps would actually mean.

    Ernesto used Remember Me for about only himself...
    Hector wrote it for daughter and to remind her how much he loved her...
    If you notice during the movie, Hector has NO shoes. But after Miguel gets Coco to remember him, and the Rivera family accepts him, the movie ends with him wearing shoes. Indicating that they made him shoes, or maybe Miguel did, thereby accepting him into their family. Such a simple but huge heartfelt gesture. I absolutely love this movie.

    Sophie, I don't think any of us were quite ready for "Coco". Glad you enjoyed it.
    P.S. In case no one has told you yet, "Un Poco Loco" means 'a little crazy' in Spanish. When you learn exactly who Hector is in relation to Miguel, it becomes clear that he wrote this song about Imelda.

    This movie wrecked me HARD. I love this movie, but I don't like to watch it because I cry my eyes out every single time. On a happier note, I'd like to tell you a couple of things about the huge impact this movie had here in México:
    De la Cruz's guitar was actually designed in a mexican town called Paracho, famous for their guitars. Paracho had a huge guitar monument in the town plaza, and they painted it over to resemble De la Cruz's guitar. I believe the monument still looks like that today.
    Recuérdame (AKA, Remember Me) played on the radio for YEARS. Probably still plays every now and then. It was also played last Día de Muertos where I live, alongside other all-time classics like La Llorona. At this point, I'm willing to bet that Recuérdame will become a mainstay part of Día de los Muertos celebrations moving foward.

    “How can you confuse who your husband was” Mama Imelda and all the family in the land of the dead never actually said Hectors name in referencing Imelda’s husband. Miguel’s living family probably only accepted Miguel thinking Ernesto as great grandpa because along with banishing music I can see Imelda telling everyone to never say his name again

    • @alyssaz5692
      @alyssaz5692 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would say they probably didn't even know his name, considering Imelda never referred to him by name, and Coco only called him Papa. In fact Coco might never have known either, considering how young she was. At that age, she was probably still in the stage of thinking her papa's name was just that: Papa. She might have asked Imelda as she grew older, but I could see Imelda just refusing to talk about him at all beyond telling her he left them in his selfish dream of becoming a musician. Since Coco and Imelda were the only members of the family who personally knew Hector before he died, the rest of the family probably never knew his name at all.

  • @kateiannacone2698
    @kateiannacone2698 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    "Why does everyone think De La Cruz is the grandfather? How do you confuse who your husband is?"
    See, that's actually what gave it away for me. Miguel was WAY too sure about it WAY too early, and they were being WAY too careful not to show the great-great-grandfather's face or have anyone say his name who remembered him. No one left alive except Coco remembers him, and on the other side, he doesn’t say the name to any of his family members. And they all refer to him as "That man" or "That musician" or "my husband" or in Coco's case, Papa. So that made me sure that it wasn't De La Cruz, and there was really only one other major character who was both male and dead. Lol

    • @ju2545
      @ju2545 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They didn’t say his name because either they wanted nothing to do with him, or because Coco didn’t dare tell them who he was or she would get in trouble with her family.

    • @kateiannacone2698
      @kateiannacone2698 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @ju2545 Yes, I understand that's the reason the characters didn't say the name. But the fact that the writers were very careful not to say the name is still the basis for the thought process by which I predicted the twist. I would rather not have, but it's something I've become very conscious of in stories: when a character jumps to a conclusion based on a little bit of evidence that isn't actually proof early on, and there continues to be no actual confirmation... like when he asked Coco "was your papá Ernesto De la Cruz?" And she just pointed and said "Papá! Papá!" I was immediately like "... That wasn't a yes..."

    • @ju2545
      @ju2545 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kateiannacone2698 did u also notice that when Imelda gives Miguel her blessing, the petal glows, signifying that the magic is working, because they’re family. But when Ernesto gives Miguel his blessing, it doesn’t glow, signifying that they’re not actually family. And Mama Coco didn’t say “yes” because she’s old and has trouble remembering things and you can’t expect her to give Miguel full responses to his questions. She just saw the pic and recognized her papa

    • @kateiannacone2698
      @kateiannacone2698 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @ju2545 I did notice the petal, and it supported what I was already thinking. Yes, there are in-universe explanations for the things I noticed and they make perfect sense and I understand that. But it's a storytelling pattern that I noticed and let me predict the twist. I don't know what to tell you. It's not a bad thing. It's good foreshadowing, and excellent writing that there's good in-story reasons for all of it so it doesn't seem forced. I just noticed the pattern is all.

    "There's nothing to forgive."
    I disagree. Hector made the choice to leave her alone with a baby so that he could go pursue his dream, and he was on the road with Ernesto for months before he was murdered. He said as much. And when he tried to go home, it wasn't because it was planned. It was because he got homesick. So while it's not his fault he got murdered, he still made the choice to leave her and Coco behind for an extended period of time, possibly indefinitely. So while I feel for Hector, and I do think that banishing music from the family for 5 generations is a huge overreaction, I also feel for Imelda and think her anger is valid. Because even though he changed his mind in the end and tried to come home, he still made a choice and it hurt her. Intentions are all well and good, but the effect matters too. And holding on to that anger for 80 years, even being told about the murder and that it wasn’t his fault that he didn't make it home doesn’t undo the pain of abandonment that she felt, or the pressure of having to raise a child alone, or that he just dumped that responsibility on her so he could go pursue his personal dream. And how many people hear an explanation for a behavior that hurt them and instantly stop feeling angry? She needs time to process it. I feel for Hector. He's a good guy who made a mistake that cost him everything. But Imelda is valid too.

    During the reserch trips where the Pixar staff spent time with mexican families during La Dia de Los Muertos (The Day of the Dead), director Lee Unkrich noticed a family's dog who constantily tried to sneak to their Ofrenda to munch on a cupcake, that inspired Dante eating the food at the offering in the movie.

    Hey, great reaction! By the way, have you watched The Prince of Egypt? This one holds a VEEEERRRRYYY special place in my heart. In fact, it's one of my favourite movies: astounding and majestic ost, amaaaazziiiing songs, great animation... Regarding the story, I don't know if you know about Moses. Even though this is based on the original religious version, it deepens into the evolution of relationship between brothers, above all. It also transmits beautiful messages, and it doesn't matter if you are religious or not. Besides, it sets a kind of different concept of villain of the story and something that many movies forget: when you discover a harsh truth, you just don't accept it heroically and continue your story through a new path. The most normal thing is to deny it and question your existence Idk how many times. Also, the movie shows what a sacrifice is and making hard choices.
    This movie made me feel hope, anger towards different characters at some point, and VEEEERRRRYYY sad.
    Hunchback of Notre Dame is another good one, and if you think the Disney version is dark then Idk what the original story is.
    Both movies are VEEERRRYY underrated.
