This movie is literally everything to me. Not long after my mother passed away in 2018, I met my beautiful mexican wife. We watched this for the first time together, and I couldn't help but cry my eyes out, but what she did was truly breathtaking for me. She held me in her arms and said she wanted to honour my mum on her ofrenda.
Me and Maria are still going as strong as ever in our relationship. She is my whole universe and I am blessed every single day I get to wake beside her.
When I proposed to her I played the song at the end of the movie "proud corazón" and sang it to her in Spanish. She is my proud heart.

This movie always makes me remember my grandma "Mo". I had a special connection with my grandma Mo like Miguel had with Mama Coco. Even Abuelita reminds me of certain aspects of my grandma Mo, her salt & pepper hair style, house-dress & apron, the spicey attitude when scolding us, (though music was not prohibited in our family). The summer between my junior and senior year of high school, my grandma Mo was dying of cancer, so I moved in with her over her final summer to be her caregiver. (I turned from 16 to 17 years old during that summer.) I brought my guitar with me and played for her, and even during the final days when she was essentially comatose, a smile of appreciation would come to her face, letting me know that she found relief in the music and my presence at her side.

That is beautiful. I'm glad she had you there to remind her that she was remembered and loved.

*Out of the songs in this movie, my favorite is "Un Poco Loco", which translates to "a little crazy". Also, speaking as a Mexican-American, this movie is pretty factual to real-life preparations/mythos for El Dia De Los Muertos, or the Day Of The Dead. Especially with Dante's role. As a breed of dog called a Xoloitzquintli (zo-low-eats-queent-lee), he has a role of being a spirit guide through the afterlife.*

This movie was so well done. So visually delightful and emotionally deep. And extremely aware and sensitive of cultural traditions.
One of my favorite little bits was when Miguel was singing Poco Loco and his family was looking for him, they never noticed him because they were so turned off of music, they would never look onstage for a musical competition. He was almost invisible to them.

Coco reminded me so much of my Nana, my great grandmother. This movie makes me well up every time too. When I was very young about 4 and we'd be visiting my Nana would sit me down beside her in her big wooden rocking chair and she'd rock me to sleep while singing to me a Mexican lullaby. I miss my Nana & Tata a lot even to this day. They were both born in 1900, married for over 60 years and had seen so much. I still remember my Tata saying to me when I was a kid visiting back in the 70s, "Hey, my boy! What are you doing?" I can hear his voice so clearly. They both passed when I was in my late teens. I'm 61 now and I can still remember my Nana's stash of Lorna Doone cookies and the smell of my Tata's shaving soap. I remember them so clearly. I do hope to see them again some day.

There's a big difference between knowing someone's name and knowing them, I guess that's the point. Even if you can trace your ancestry a thousand years back it will only be words on a page. In the future when we can all live indefinitely it will be interesting to see how traditions like this develop.

In the movie-world, you stay in the Land of the Dead so long as someone remembers your either because they knew you when you were alive OR because someone who knew you shared their memories of you. That's why Hector and Coco could reunite in the Land of the Dead, because Coco shared her memories of Hector (and Imelda) with the entire Rivera family.

My dad's mother had alzheimers and the last time he saw her she didn't recognise him it must have broken his heart it would mine if that was one of my parents. The best days of my life were when my children were born I cannot imagine forgetting those moments and breaking their hearts bc my brain is diseased which is no ones fault there's no on eto blame for it so that aspect of this film really hits home also my mum mother had vascular dementia but only for a few months before she sadly passed away and yes I do cry at the end every single time

Great reaction, Cristy! Check out "Encanto" when you get a chance. I encourage you to watch the sing-along version that shows JUST the lyrics of the songs but not the rest of the closed captions. I only say this because the lyrics to the songs are very important to the storytelling, but some chicks get into the beats and forget that there are lyrics. And some of it is sung pretty fast, so it's easy to miss something. You rock!

This might be my favorite Pixar/Disney movie, and if not, it's for sure a top 3, as family films don't get much better than this. I grew up on the Disney movies of old, Sleeping Beauty, Peter Pan, Snow White, Etc, but I never saw any of there second renaissance of the late 80's, early 90's. The Lion King, Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, as by the time those films came along I was grown and working, and just missed seeing them as Disney was no longer a thing for me. But once I had my son, he grew up on the Disney/Pixar films, and this one was one of our family favorites, as Pixar was killing it for a time(Wall-E, UP, Toy Story, etc.), and this film shows them at the peak of what they do, when doing it well.

Yay I'm not a psychopath! I didn't feel a tiny bit on Up, I honestly think that movie is highly overrated. But Coco makes me cry every single time!

0:50 You'll get different opinions of course, but in general many people agree that Coco was the last outstanding Pixar film. Incredibles 2, Toy Story 4, and Onward were good. Then Soul was ok. And then I don't think anything from 2021 on is worth the time.
You can also see this in the IMDB ratings
    Coco 8.4
    Incredibles 2 7.5
    Toy Story 4 7.7
    Onward 7.4
    Soul 8.0
    Luca 7.4
    Turning Red 7.0
    Lightyear 6.1
    Elemental 7.0

As an Asian-American son of an immigrant, I loved Turning Red. And while some of the concepts are specific to Asian/Chinese immigrant culture, I think there's a lot there to appreciate about the themes of coming-of-age and trying to negotiate and reconcile your own emerging identity with the expectations and values of your parents. Is it the greatest thing Pixar has made, as a film? No. But is it worth seeing for the nuanced and humorous exploration its themes? Absolutely.

I regret not watching this movie in Spanish. It'd be awesome if there was a version in real Mexican Spanish with proper lip-syncing and voice direction.

What do you mean with "It'd be awesome if there was a version in real Mexican Spanish"? The Latin Spanish (please, do not confuse with Castillan Spanish), version was made with Mexican voice actorrs/celebrities. Even the songs are in spanish

Annoys me when people credit this as a Disney movie. This is Pixar! Just because Disney has the money and bought Pixar does not make it a Disney movie imo.

Let's see, now. Four times, I have seen Pixar and Disney collab to recreate movies that Disney had originally released, many years ago. _Pete's Dragon,_ _The Jungle Book,_ _Beauty and the Beast_ and _Cinderella._ The reboots had _incredible_ CGI, but they did not hold a candle to the originals. The fourth time this happened, I resolved that, since I have seen the originals, I don't need to waste my time on anymore CGI-live-action reboots. They are just going to disappoint me.
That's really the only kind of Pixar movie I would recommend against; reboots. Originals will be good, but reboots, if you have seen the originals, are going to disappoint you.
