When Coco came out the year before my grandma died, and Miguel meeting this bunch of relatives he only saw in pictures or heard stories about was so relatable as I never met my grandfathers, both died, before I was born.
Xoloizcuintles are dogs who "help people go to the other side" and they were (sadly) buried alive with the dead in prehispanic times. That’s why Dante can just come and go. I was supposed to watch this with my grandma when it came out. She died before we could, and I can’t watch it without crying. A lot. It’s really a beautiful story.
What I love about Coco is that Pixar wasn’t afraid on doing the whole “it’s only adults who died” because celebrating Day of the Dead there are two versions. To celebrate the sad death of a adult(s) or death of a child(s). Sometimes it’s both. For adults we put up an alter that contains a picture, but also drinks they may have liked (alcohol most of the time) and food of course. While for a child we put up toys such as a small toy train or stuffed animals. Along with food they liked of course. No matter what, a good percentage of the time no one cries because we believe they are there with us at that very moment. And that they are in a better place.

One of my favourite details at the end, when that enormous dragon familiar returns to the real world side by side with Dante it's just a tiny regular house cat. It says a lot about the personalities of cats that their egos as reflected by the spirit realm are as gigantic formidable beasts.
I saw this for the first time not long after my girlfriend had suddenly passed away in her sleep, just 2 months shy of her 36th birthday. To say that it was rough would be an understatement. I had no idea that what I was going to watch would "hit home" so much. I remember being amazed that Pixar/Disney made a movie that dealt with the Day of the Dead, but they really made me a new participant in that celebration. I watched it just after my dad died because my cousin invited me to go to the cinema I don't think they realised what it was about, I found it tough to get through but it is a favourite film now that time has passed.
Jess, the song Imelda sings is "La Llorona" which is a traditional folk song that, depending on your interpretation and context, can be at the same time and interchangeably, a song about unattainable love and also a song about death. The title character can both be interpreted as a beautiful, aloof woman, who may or may not be dead, or as death itself.
Dante is a Xoloitzcuintli, a breed of dog once believed to act as psychopomps (guides to the land of the dead) so of course he can just move between worlds without issue even before he became a spirit guide.

This movie is amazing. I love the concept of Day of the Dead and wish it was a thing in my culture. The idea of being close to and sharing memories and food with people who are no longer around. It sounds stupid but the closest I've got is picturing my dad's force ghost at the cinema with me watching the latest Star Wars movie, a franchise we both love(d). It was our thing as a dad daughter duo. I feel like the ability to blur the lines between the world of living and dead is such fundamental human wish. Reminds me of the Ed Sheeran lyric "I wish that heaven had visiting hours".
I love this movie so much, the ending makes me cry every time. My favorite detail someone pointed out to me is Hector isn't wearing shoes until AFTER Imelda forgives him. The whole time he is seen barefoot (bare-bone?) up til then.
How have you never seen this before, Jess?!? Such a beautiful, heartwarming movie. Just a Pixar masterclass in original storytelling. I was crying all over again right there with you. That sweater looks super comfy! Are you trying for tickets for Taylor's tour next week? Good luck!
This was the last movie that made me cry. Started thinking about all my family members who have passed on when the credits started to roll and just lost it. Great movie
Took my mom to see this in the and at the end when Coco was talking about her Papa, I was tearing up. Looked to my mom and she was sobbing as well. This was such a great movie.
It's a small touch I love, Miguel watches other people play and looks so genuinely enchanted by the performer. (Like when Hector is singing for his friend that one last time.) My brother (who also plays guitar) has similar awe with other guitarists. It makes me happy to see how the animators captured that with Miguel.
This movie DESTROYS me emotionally everytime I see it. Mama Coco juts reminds me of my own abuelita (who was the only one I ever knew, as my maternal one passed away before I was born). Between this and Encanto, I am hoping Disney and or Pixar do a movie set in Peru so I can cry even more about my homeland!
I watched this film in theaters with my two best friends. We’re all Mexican descent and we ugly cried at the end so much. I especially lost it as Miguel was rushing to Mama Coco, I almost that she had died before he got the chance to see her again. This film makes me remember my Abuelita who passed away ten years ago.
I turned this on to see how you'd react to a movie that made me cry like a baby when I saw it. And all I did was cry like a baby remembering it (unintentional).
Fun fact: (hector) is voiced by (Gael Garcia Bernal) same actor that was in (werewolf by night ) and in that movie at the beginning of the movie he was painted in reference to the movie Coco 😀
this is genuinely one of the most beautiful stories in any movie ever. i haven't gotten through this movie without sobbing my eyes out a single time despite watching it at least 20 times 😭
i watched this movie for the first time while my grandfather was in his deathbed (he lived for another 4 months but he was already in the last stage of alzheimers so he wasn't really living) and then the same day he passed away and it completely destroyed me the way coco resembles him so much not only in appearance but also in her sweetness, and obviously her illness. i cannot help but cry everytime she appears on tv but at the same i love watching coco because even though im from argentina and we don't have this in our culture, i like to believe that it is true and that he'll never be truly away because i make sure other people hear about him
Instant Classic movie! As a dad who has lost all of my grandparents now, I couldn’t help but tear up at the end at the theater. Even now, it is hard to watch the end without finding some happy tears. Saw you reacting to Dune a while ago, and am wondering if you were going to watch/react to Andor? Also Rogue One if you have not yet watched it. 2 of the better character developing, grounded, and emotional Star Wars productions today, with a fantastic director who worked on both. Good storytelling and compelling characters really makes for good reaction videos!
I’m from Michoacán, Mexico, where this tradition about the death is so strong (the town on the movie is based on the little towns of Michoacán). We love the movie and we love the people watch it and know abotu day of the death
My dad is half Mexican and got adopted out so he's actually country af. But this movie has honestly been my favorite because I love the idea that we have to keep the idea of our past loved ones alive to keep them going. I never met my grandpa and I miss my uncle David to death so this movie always reminds me to keep them in my heart. Another crazy thing was that music was important in both of those families so it all hits deep in this movie.
I watched this movie for the first time in Mexico on a bus to some ruins. It will always remind me of that time. It was a surreal experience and I loved it.
Hey Jess! I’m hoping that hurricane that just hit again didn’t make things worse for your grandparents in any way, but importantly hope y’all are safe 🙏🏼
I watched this film very close to my own grandmothers death, she also had dementia, and also had a few memories that were still accessible by singing songs with her. this obviously influences what I think of Coco, but honestly, Coco is very close to a perfect movie. If you understand exactly where the story is guiding you, but the emotional punch is not lessened, but instead strengthened by it, that's storytelling craftsmanship.
So about Abuelita's sandal...it's called la chancla. It's a weapon of mass destruction. Do not mess with a Latina and her chancla. Also, I love Dante. Best good boy.
A fun fact that I learned: The creator of Coco said that even though Miguel and Ernesto weren’t blood related Ernesto’s Blessing still would have been able to send Miguel home because they both did genuinely believe they were family. Ernesto was even very protective of Miguel, holding him back when Hector was yelling at both of them, showing us that he really did genuinely care about Miguel. But when Miguel figured out that he poisoned Hector, the little spark of genuine care for someone other then himself, came to a crashing halt. So yeah, if Hector hadn’t interrupted the moment Ernesto’s Blessing really would have been enough to send Miguel home.
I have to say, I never expected that a film about death would make me feel so alive.
oh i love this!!!
Just like Dia de Los Muertos, not just a mourning of death, but a celebration of life!
That’s exactly the whole point of our Día de Muertos tradition. Enjoy.
And that is what Día de los Muertos is for, a celebration of life.

Took my mom to see this in the and at the end when Coco was talking about her Papa, I was tearing up. Looked to my mom and she was sobbing as well. This was such a great movie.
It's a small touch I love, Miguel watches other people play and looks so genuinely enchanted by the performer. (Like when Hector is singing for his friend that one last time.)
My brother (who also plays guitar) has similar awe with other guitarists. It makes me happy to see how the animators captured that with Miguel.
What is great is that Hector’s voice actor also plays Jack from Werewolf by Night.
If you want another movie to hit you in the feels, I HIGHLY recommend Jojo Rabbit. It’s not Pixar, but it’s in my top 5 favorite movies.
really i love your reacts, coco shows how we mexicans love those who have already left, and are still alive in our hearts
FYI, Hector is voiced by Gael Garcia Bernal who also plays Jack Russel the werewolf in Werewolf by Night.
The way how I instantly started crying at remember me😭
i cant watch this without crying. im like sobbing rn,, the last remember me really got me
"These people have style, pizzazz...a uniform!" Awesome reaction to a beautiful movie, Jess. Thanks for sharing.
22:05 "Llorona" is a song that tells us the story of a person who find the Llorona (The spectre) in a graveyard, and suddenly dies xD
PS Jack from werewolf by night is also Hector from this movie
Oh man, time to cry again. #RememberMe
Timeless film ❤😢
This movie still never fails to amaze and Makes me cry.
How are you this empathic? Great reaction dude.
Yesss! My favorite Pixar movie and one that always makes me cry.
this is genuinely one of the most beautiful stories in any movie ever. i haven't gotten through this movie without sobbing my eyes out a single time despite watching it at least 20 times 😭
i watched this movie for the first time while my grandfather was in his deathbed (he lived for another 4 months but he was already in the last stage of alzheimers so he wasn't really living) and then the same day he passed away and it completely destroyed me the way coco resembles him so much not only in appearance but also in her sweetness, and obviously her illness. i cannot help but cry everytime she appears on tv but at the same i love watching coco because even though im from argentina and we don't have this in our culture, i like to believe that it is true and that he'll never be truly away because i make sure other people hear about him
This is for sure my favorite Disney/Pixar movie. Another great one is "Soul". Highly recommend if you havent seen it.
I'm so happy you liked the movie. When I saw it in theaters, I cried so much. Every time I watch it, I tear up.
Coco IS with no doubt THE BEST PIXAR MOVIE EVER CREATED
I'm proud to say I say coco in the cinema when it came out and absolutely EVERYONE THERE was crying cuz this movie is truly spectacular
Yes I love this movie. It also made me cry. Disney and Pixar just love those tears.
Disney Pixar legend company
it doesnt even care if youre from México or not, this movie is beautiful, our culture is beautifull
I’m from Michoacán, Mexico, where this tradition about the death is so strong (the town on the movie is based on the little towns of Michoacán).
We love the movie and we love the people watch it and know abotu day of the death
This movie came out the year I lost my dad, who was a musician too, and it absolutely wrecked me.
Congrats on figuring out the twist!!!
Was mind blown first time watching
I'd recommend Book of Life as well, a different story but also shares the theme of the day of the dead.
I've seen it a few times and I just balled my eyes out just seeing those bits in the reaction.
My favorite reactor reacting to my favorite movie to watch people react to? This must be my lucky day!
Coco was so good. One of the best and it was definitely one that made you cry. I love the song so much.🥰😍😍😭😭🥺🥺 loved your reaction.
