These are some of my favorite kinds of stories. Where all of the characters have something to learn and it’s not just the one who’s fully in the wrong. Miguel needed to learn about the importance of family, but also the family as a whole (mostly the matriarchs) needed to learn to forgive and move on. And learn how to genuinely support family.
What did we learn from Ernesto?
There are ways to seize your moment, but not at the cost of family and dignity.

@@SophiaMartinez588 Ernesto didn't learn anything, but that doesn't mean we can't learn from him. His character represents the pursuit of fame/power/riches at the cost of your soul, and is an embodiment of the fact that we never really know what a celebrity is like behind closed doors. He doesn't have to be redeemed for these to be true.
Bought the blu ray of this and when they showed Frida Kalo I thought to myself "Weird, Frida was a painter not a performance artist. BUT she IS dead so maybe she has time on her hands and would branch out to other art forms." Then after I saw the movie I put on the Director's commentary and rewatched it. When we got to the part with Frida Kalo the commentary actually said, "Frida Kalo was a painter not a performance artist but we figured she's got a lot of time on her hands cause she's dead so we thought she'd branch out to other art forms." I laughed and laughed because apparently I think like a Disney writer.
That is amazing and hilarious! Well done!

I loved how the meaning and purpose of the song 'Remember Me' changes throughout the movie until we finally find out not only what the true purpose of the song was, but how significant to the plot and resolution it was… The writing for this movie is one of the best plots I've seen. It's incredible how they could connect so many emotions and plots to one song.
There are some really cool details it took me a few watches to notice.
First is Dante. As soon as Miguel decides to get his great great grandfather's blessing, Dante leads Miguel directly to Hector and keeps trying to push Miguel back to Hector through the whole movie, because he is a great spirit guide (even though he's a little goofy at times).
Second is the flower pedals. Every time a member of Miguel's family says, "I give you my blessing" the pedal starts to glow, but when Ernesto says it the pedal doesn't glow. Just a really clever and subtle clue.
I'm Mexican and in my family, we don't mourn our loved ones because they're the lucky ones to leave this chaotic world. My family always said " Mourn the chaos, Don't mourned the dead". My family and I only mourned the chaotic world because bills, taxes, homeless people and other chaotic things in this Earth. We don't the dead because hey they're the lucky ones and we appreciate the dead for spending time with us that's why we have Dias De Los Muertos. All my family are tough because our ancestors made us into warriors. All Mexicans were the tough ones and we never give up.
Possibly my favorite Pixar film. SO awesome to see Mexican culture represented, and is still so relatable to anyone. My white southern Grannie would never accept a no on more food, though she worried that "no" meant you were sick and would come back with soup. My family supported my artistic leanings as a hobby but not as a career choice. What I thought I knew about my family changed dramatically as I matured and I could see us all as imperfect people who were trying our best with what we had to work with. And the music is 🔥!
Thank you for sharing the story about Wayne. It reminded me that I have picked up and put down a writing project about me, my dad, and my grandfather who shared the same name. They've both passed on and I miss them both but writing about them keeps them with me. More as a way to make my memories of them last than for publishing, for me and those who knew them. Being forgotten is my biggest fear, and the film speaks to that so gently. Yes some are forgotten, but we can make the choice to remember those who've gone on and pass those stories on. Think I'll get back to writing some this weekend. Thank you for the inspiration!

Actor Edward James Olmos has said that his five minute scene as Chicharrón, the old spirit who finally embraces his final fate after Ernesto sings "Juanita" to him -- for all that it was small -- sits proudly among his favorite performances throughout his 50+ year-long career.
It was Héctor who sang the song “Juanita”.
I am a Mexican girl and every year we put the Altar de Muertos, when I was more or less 4 years old my great grandmother passed away, I don’t have many memories of her, and I don’t remember her face (only seen t on pictures) but I remember her voice, I remember going to visit her, I remember she always asking for me, and even though she was already a very old woman and that she had a lot of grandsons and great grandsons, she always remembered and cared about me, one of the youngest, and I will always remember her, I love hearing about her, and I will talk about her to my little brother that a was born 10 years latter, so she is never forgotten 💗

We lost our 3 dogs… 3 beloved ones of the family…

Because I love this movie, and more precisely Héctor… when something like this happens mom says to me: “they’re with Héctor now.”
I love this movie so much! The Mexican cultural representation is great, and it's such an emotional powerhouse. It is physically impossible not to cry at that final scene.
The Book of Life is good, too.

I'm not Mexican myself but my family is Jamaican (grandfather was originally from Cuba). The rules were pretty similar. You always accept the food offered to you. You always attend family gatherings. Most importantly, you NEVER go against the matriarch. I saw this after my grandfather passed, 20 years after my grandmother. It got me so emotional because I would know nothing about his past if not for his stories I heard growing up. Even as my mom is now getting up in age, I told her that I refuse to let her (or any family) be forgotten.
Out of the songs in this movie, my favorite is "Un Poco Loco". I love how they animated this movie and wrote the songs, on top of honoring Mexican culture and customs. (Despite me DESPISING Ernesto De La Cruz, even before learning of his villainous nature). It's *IMPOSSIBLE* to avoid crying while Miguel is singing with Mama Coco.
Side note, you are *SLAYING* that red lipstick.
I remember watching this movie in Spanish class, the whole class was crying over how good the movie was and I think my teacher had of the students sing remember me for the whole class it was beautiful

the first time i saw this was within 2 weeks of my bestfriends father passing. i was 24 years old at the time and took my nephew to watch it not knowing a thing about it. i had known the man since i was 8 years old and grew up in his home as i spent every moment i could there. he was every bit a second father a person can be particularly as i had a rough upbringing and he went out of his way to make sure i had positivity in my life and guidance. i had been having a hard time with his passing so as this movie progressed i just couldnt hold back the tears it was such a cathartic experience. i can honestly say this movie helped me heal and process my loss and for that this movie will always hold a special place in my heart and an automatic hall of fame movie IMO. yall love each other, love yourself, and do your best to make every moment with those you love count.
This was the first movie I ever watched that made me cry. This and Avengers: Endgame made me fall in love with films and filmmaking as a whole. I treasure both of these experiences as they defined who I am in many ways that I will never want to change.
It's a blessing that this movie came out before covid hit everyone. It's one of those stories that make us all appreciate the life we're given and appreciate the people around us and even the people who are no longer with us, but we still remember stories about them.
It was so refreshing to hear Spanish words in a western film. I'm grateful.
And to not subtitle the English translation! I don't speak Spanish but I learned a lot from this film just by context. Excellent writing and performances really make this film next level.
This movie got me very emotional. Seeing families from the dead was beautiful, wonderful memories and all the songs were great, especially Remember Me, which is my favorite song

So, one of my sisters introduced me to this movie, which made her cry (and me) every time we watched it. We had a grandpa who passed away back in January of 2021, and he had started losing his memories of us before then. So, this movie reminds us of him -- or more so, Coco reminds us of him.
I definitely need to watch this again. I’ve only seen it one time as like yourself Clariss and this had me bawling my eyes out like a baby because the main message of the film was so moving. For those who haven’t seen it yet it’s best to watch it without spoilers trust me you won’t regret it 😊
My personal headcannon is that during the scene where Ernesto realizes he's been exposed, even after the conductor snaos his baton, there's one sousaphone player in the back who decides to give Pepita an epic entrance number when he comes after Ernesto!
The ending when Miguel singing to Mama Coco definitely made cry when I saw this
Never be embarrassed or feel you have to explain why you show us real emotion Clariss. It helps those of us that have also lost loved ones to identify with you even more.
The guy who says "What did I miss?" after the bell crushes Ernesto, is voiced by director Lee Unkrich. He along with John Ratzenberger (who voiced Juan Ortodoncia, the guy who's on his dentists ofrenda, although his voice is unrecongnizable due to the Mexican accent) are the only voice actors who aren't mexican or hispanic.
"And they will drink from a cactus... who is also me!"
The scene is so funny and so on point with the way Kahlo explored surrealism XD. Frida Kahlo is an interesting character, and while in Mexico many consider she has been overblown out of proportion thanks to her active love life (to the point other female mexican painters of surrealism are mostly forgotten), he life is a testament of expressing pain through art.
For those who haven't seen any film or get in touch with her story: Frida Kahlo suffered of physical and emotional pain all her life. In 1925, when she was 17 or 18 years old, she was in a traffic accident in Mexico City; her bus was hit and destroyed by a trolley (there are no details of the exact mechanics of the collision, but in the end, young Kahlo had been impaled by one of the hand tubes through her abdomen, uterus and exiting between her legs; fracturing in the process her pelvis and breaking her spine in three places; the second most damaged body part was her leg, shattered in 11 different sections). Due to the limited resources for such injuries at the time, she would walk with a limp, she would need to wear a torso cast to help her weakened spine, she would live with chronic pain and would never be able to have children.
Her mostly traditional mexican look, with the unshaven facial hair wouldn't appear until she entered a relationship with painter Diego Rivera, who was a big promoter of mexican tradition, to the point of making Frida adopt this style. Their relationship (that would be mostly described as "toxic" under today's standards) ranged from deep infatuation to hate and infidelity. Rivera would often cheat with many of her models, Kahlo would pay back cheating with different men and women (even seducing some of Rivera's lovers); Rivera slept with Frida's sister, and Kahlo had an affair with Rivera's political hero, communist leader in exile Leon Trotsky (after leaving the USSR, Rivera and Kahlo were of the most prominent figures to champion Trotsky was granted asylum in Mexico; how far they went in that romance? It depends on the source, many claim it was platonic or more emotional than physical... and then there is a russian biographic series with an explicit steamy scene between Kahlo and Trotsky XD).
Frida Kahlo would die of pneumonia complications on July of 1954, 47 years old; the house where she lived, worked and died can be visited today in Mexico City since it is now a museum.
"The final death"
Interestingly enough, some of the original mythology of Day of the Dead does recognize the fate of every spirit is to be "forgotten"; but not exactly in the sense of loss. Aztec mythology (broadly and in general) imagined death as a long process where the soul travelled to the underworld, facing many hardship; but the underworld wasn't exactly a final resting place of reunion, but rather the return to the "everything", the loss of the self and the identity to go back to the cosmos. Europeans would add the concept of a "permanent resting and reunion place" to the recipie, and then we get the idea we have today: that have the chance to find our loved ones in the afterlife.
Both concepts have their charm and their place, because we don't want to forget our loved ones and be forgotten; but in the end, we will return to the "everything", whatever that means to each one.
"It's not Héctor's fault!"
It kind of is XD. Back in the day (since it seems to have been the 1930's; given the film references in De la Cruz material) becoming a famous musician was way harder; most of the times it meant touring for months in towns and around the most important cities of the country; it was an even bigger commitment to the career than it is today. It's implied that, while Hector has a good heart, he partially gets motivated by selfish reasons, and gets blindsided by them (since he met an even more selfish man). Imelda couldn't let go that he was not willing to do the only sacrifice she might have asked of him. Sadly, he would meet the end of his life before making ammends, for the sake of all involved. With loss, many times hurts more the uncertainty and the doubts than the loss in itself.
"A celebration of mexican culture"
Fun fact: when the film was being produced and marketed, in Mexico some rumors started an outrage against the film and Disney/Pixar. Some "sources" indicated Disney was trying to copyright the entire celebration of the Day of the Dead, effectively forbidding mexicans from celebrating unless they payed fees or royalties (that's not how copyright works, though; Disney copyrighted the concept of the film and the visuals associated to the film, copyright protects art expressions, not the entire concept of a cultural celebration).
Anyway, whenever the film comes up, web pages and defenders of the national honor still circulate the idea that an evil american corporation almost snatched Day of the Dead from poor mexicans (it's not the only "evil plot" against mexican culture that comes out from time to time: another one says USA owns the rights of the Mexican National Anthem, and forces Mexico to pay royalties to use it).
Nice rendition; personally, I pick for the season two songs: No es serio este cementerio (This cemetery is not serious) by Mecano and Inmortal (Immortal) by La Oreja de Van Gogh. True, not exactly folk mexican music, but the lyrics hit loss and mourning in beautiful ways.
Immortal, specially, reminds me of a personal loss, because it says something she may say to me to cope with the idea of parting ways: "I'll be your light, I'll be a disguse, a lamp post that lights as you pass by, any butterfly, the North Star, that shines alone and leaves on its own; I'll be the taste of a kiss in the sea, and an old proverb of how to forget; [...] I'll be a mole adorning your skin, a dove flying wherever you are, a lucky strike, the coffee of the afternoon, a sight that will move you; I'll be the voice you hear in the train, and a feeling that everything will be ok... I'll be immortal... I'll be immortal...".

I sadly los my grandpa when I was pretty young and since I didn’t have a good father figure I call him papi. I wanted to dance with his picture at my 15 but they said I was too young to remember his. I remember everything, when I would lay in hammock with him ( every time I lay in one I fall asleep as if he is hugging me again) and when I would run up to him in the airport. I introduce him to all my nieces and nephew and my grandma even tho I never met her even . This movie will forever touch my heart ♥️

I remember watching this movie in theaters during thanksgiving. I saw the De Le Cruz twist coming (mainly because the movie gives a lot of hints to not treat him with sympathy) but what stood out was how well the story was actually told and how much they respected the culture in which they were borrowing from. But let me tell you, the final act of this movie in theaters was a gauntlet for moviegoers to see how long they can hold on before breaking down and crying. It was impressive to see.
Thank you Clariss for being the example to the world on how to give this gift to our elders, our ancestors, to hold them in our hearts and hold on to their memories. That there may be the tapestry of personality, influencing and inspiring, on a bridge of compassion that spans between realms. Any act of compassion we perform causes ripples of effects far and wide. I have enjoyed sharing tears with you, and being inspired by your own stories of listening to our elders and sharing space of the rich life experience they have to share.
My grandmother died 11 years ago. When we attended her memorial service, my aunt had passed around an obituary detailing the all the major parts of her life, from early childhood to her elderly years. I went and got that laminated right away, because I didn't want to forget what was there. And I still have it in plain sight to this day.
This is a gem of a movie. They really knocked it out of the park with this one.
The story is good, the animation and designs are great, the songs are amazing, and god this movie really knows how to gut punch you right in the feels

I really loved watching your reaction, and your story about your grandfather really resonated with me. I'm Nigerian, and I lost my grandmother on my mom's side to covid in 2021, and she was a matriarch in every sense of the word. She raised my mother and her four siblings largely without her husband, who had died when my mother was 10 years old. She survived breast cancer and spent years living with each of her children for some time every time one of them had a new baby, so that she could help take care of them. This was my first time losing someone so close to me, and on top of the grief, I felt a lot of guilt for not learning more of her stories while I had the chance, or not calling her has much as I should have. Family was very important to her, and even at her old age (she died at 91 I think) she remembered small details from the lives of everyone in the family. She always called me at every important milestone and I just wish I called her more. Even over two years later, there are days when I just miss her so much that it brings me to tears. I know that she's not truly gone, but I just want her back. But you helped me remember that at least I'm not alone, so thank you.

This movie and ‘soul’ are my two favourite animated films of late. They’re both so good. I only seen them by chance. Thank goodness my god daughters have such great taste in films
Yessss! lets go!!! i was waiting for this reaction. I love this movie, I saw it 3 times in theaters. I also forced my parents to go watch it with me haha. They had a Spanish version playing as well which was cool to see. Also my name is Miguel and my moms name is Imelda so it was crazy to see both our names with the main characters lolz
As others have said, you are a very beautiful soul, Clariss, and I thank you for this reaction. I had a time a few years ago when I was feeling very much like I no longer wanted to be alive because my own father was in his last battle with cancer, and it seemed like my career was in trouble, and I didn't know how to deal with any of it, but the thing that got me through was knowing that I had memories of my own daughter looking at me the way Coco looked at Hector, and I didn't want her growing up alone, wondering what had happened to her Daddy. I've watched enough reactions to this movie at this point that I'd kind of disconnected from it, but your open and emotional reaction allowed me to reconnect with the memory of how deliberate I was in making that choice to stay alive for my daughter, so I thank you for that.

This movie wrecked me in the theater. Honestly, Pixar's scenes with the ultimate catharsis have been my favorite (vs the sad ones like Jesse's When She Loved Me, Married Life, Bing Bong). Miguel singing to Coco is not just emotional, but so sweet because it brings back the true meaning of Remember Me, it allows her to remember her father, who she never saw after he left when she was a girl, and Miguel keeps his promise to Hector by telling Coco that her papa loved her very much. Ugh.
My dad died when I was 20 because of the brain hemorrhage. He said to me a couple months before that, like he knew.
"When I die, don't get sad, don't cry. Because all that will be gone is just that - my body. I want you to smile, for all the memories I've gifted you. Because I will live and always be with you, as long as you remember."
He's wanted to be a circus clown, because he liked to make people smile and laugh. And I think his death was a last little anecdote for this world. Comatose for three weeks, with a blood clot size of a walnut, before giving in. At december 31st, at noon, twelve hours before 2013.

I've lost quite a few people myself. Listening to you share about how important and special listening to your family and learning their stories really resonated with me. My great uncle I don't get to see often. But every family gathering he adores sitting with me, because I will listen to each story about the ships he served on, his brothers, his work, his fishing - and his family recipes. I hope soon to record some of them properly so they are never lost, from his aletria to the folar bread. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and experiences with this reaction!

This movie is truly one of the best movies I've ever seen. It helped me to grieve for my father that passed away 2 years ago this month on the 11th of November he was my best friend and rock and I still struggle at times especially this time because we both even share the same birthday and he passed away 6 days before our birthday. I truly love your reaction you became my favorite TH-cam channel just from this video. 😭😭❤❤

This is the only animated movie that made me cry. I remember first time seeing this several years ago, as soon as Miguel sing a song to his grandma I'm fighting really hard not to cry coz I was with my friends at that time little did I know everyone was watching supper focused with teary eyes😅 man, I really love this movie this is the cream of the top.
Best reaction ever! I remember when this movie was available on DVD and asked my Mom if she wanted to get it a copy but declined (apparently someone had told her the plot of the movie and I had yet no idea what it was about but loved everything Pixar was producing at the time). When I finally got to see it for the first time I realized why my Mom refused. Great grandma Coco was the splitting image of my grandma (My mom's mother who passed away in the 90's). Like you, the film reminded me of all the lost loved ones we've had to deal with though our lives (unfortunately)..too much for my Mom to handle but what a great story! I'll always watch it when I can and I'll always shed a tear while doing it because my family (Mi familia) was everything to me growing up as a kid and I'll always cherish those memories!! This movie always made me cry because it reminds me of my father passing away a few hours after meeting his grandson for the first time and learning he was named after him in honour of how much he sacrifice for our family.😢

I'll always remember my grandfather, who grew up so poor they couldn't afford new shoes. He started working as a lumberjack at 14 and didn't stop working double shift at various jobs until he was way past his prime. The incredible class journey my family has made is all thanks to him and grandma. It reminds me that Sweden used to be one of the poorest countries in Europe, and now we're doing well, both the country and my family. He was also one hell of a storyteller. Unfortunately, I'm not much of a story rememberer so a lot will have to be left to other family members.

Clariss, I just wanted to say thank you for making this video and allowing us a space to meditate on grief communally with you. "Coco" breaks me time and time again; as a fatherless child from an abusive family, whose only outlet was music, this film always feels like an antidote or healing salve applied directly to where the pain is. Another work that does this for me is the musical The Secret Garden; the music is amazing and cathartic for anyone who has experienced loss or abandonment, and the general theme is that spring comes because of winter - that from pain comes healing, and from healing, comes your being open as a person to accept happiness and connection. Your musings on Spring Awakening reminded me of this. But I really needed this space to grieve today. Thank you for what you do!

I come from a broken home (runs in the family I guess) so I know some of the pain and longing of both Coco and Hector. That's why this movie gets me everytime. I too wept like a baby.
When I was younger I didn’t care much for my ancestors. Also because of the bad things I’d been told. But there is a story to everything and sometimes souls can get lost and misunderstood.
South American spiritual ceremonies helped me to reveal the true colors of my own roots. And I discovered that they are actually beautiful! Some of the amazing artwork in this movie take me back to those experiences. And the Music!!! Learning to play and sing (Spanish) songs is such a blessing. It is so healing for myself and others. I hope someday it will also help to restore the bond with my family

I adore this movie so much, the ending always has me in tears. The animation, the songs, the story, the charactors, the culture it portrays, are amazing in this movie. More importantly, the message about family, last summer, I lost my father to lung cancer. I miss him so much and I always remember when he introduced me to so many genres of music growing up.

I saw this movie a few days after my grandma died for the first time and the end shattered my heart into pieces. I wanted to introduce the love of my life to her but couldnt. the first christmas, since she loved christmas so much was such a pain. I can barely remember her funural. I love this movie so much. Never fails to make me cry. My grandmother was also a musician. She played the guitar and sang on the local radio station. She died from Alzheimer’s when I was really young. And just last November my dad died. He also had Alzheimer’s. So this movie REALLY hits close to home. The first time I saw this movie I sobbed. It’s absolutely beautiful though. I agree, there is a catharsis watching it, especially now that my dad passed. I love the idea of Dio de los Muertos (please excuse any misspelling). It’s a beautiful holiday and tradition of remembrance.
