Royal Oak here for me. I don’t know why but I just don’t love the dial on the Patek. However, both of these are amazing pieces. Tim, you have a DREAM job, my friend.
I’d love to see the VC Overseas perpetual calendar compared to the RO. Unfortunately, it’s only offered in precious metals. On a related note, I’d love to see VC put the annual calendar from the FiftySix and Historiques in the Overseas. I think it would be a great competitor to the Nautilus, and unlike the Perpetual calendar, it would almost certainly be offered in steel.
I got a 5712 and a salmon pink dial perpetual AP at once, i stopped wearing my other watches, the 5712 is currently my favorite watch at all time,super comfortable,i have a small wrist.
I agree with you Tim I am choosing the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak. The AP dial, display case back, case and bracelet are more beautiful then the Patek Philippe Nautilus.The AP give more for the money because the AP is a perpetual calendar and the Patek is an annual calendar.
I prefer the AP but wish it had a running seconds hand, even over the week indicator, which is impressive but less useful. Would love to see a comparison to the new Nautilus PP.
Tim ? with all your respect , the Patek 5726 has way more class than the AP, you talked about a bubble burst ?, i dont see any bubble as PP produces 3 watches per AD worldwide yes 3 . or less . I have the money i have the desire to buy a Nautilus steel at AD, guess what Tim , no longer they accept waiting list into the 1000s. if this is a bubble ? i am james bond. Hype & demand & hype........... Patek is more desirable, but the AP more beautiful. Can’t afford either but not sure I would buy either even if I could. There are so many other beautiful watches out there with none of the waiting list hassles.
RedAtticus I think the Overseas is losing out simply because Vacheron Constantine is a much less popular brand than AP and especially Patek. As a result, people aren’t even considering it when looking at the Nautilus or Royal Oak. We tend to see something similar with Rolex verses basically anyone else. People are spending exorbitant amounts for preowned Submariners and Daytonas, or signing themselves up for multi-year wait lists, without considering any of the competition.
The question no one seems to want to answer in public is who is paying twice over the odds for tha Patek? you see a new one on someones wrist and unfortunately you're going to assume they didn't wait on a list for that and paid WAY TOO MUCH.
The AP is very nice indeed still, an easy win for the Patek. It has just too many technical advantages over this AP. Just a more modern concept I suppose. As for cost, if you can afford a 60 grand watch, you can afford a 100 grand one. This Patek is just a better allrounder, the robustness, WR and great dial legibility. This all may sound rather analytical on my part, but emotionally it does it for me too...if you were only to have the one great watch.
The P-T is by far a better watch for real-world use. As far as the Oak: I'd say that if your watch cannot count seconds--but instead counts weeks of the year!?!--(and you paid $60,000-plus for it)--then you've been had!
