Jack Merritt was killed in a terrorist attack while at an event for the charity "Learning Together" where prisoners are teamed with students to promote learning & help breakdown social stigma regarding offenders. He was stabbed to death along with a Saskia Jones another volunteer.
Indeed. Just to add, Dave knew Jack personally, cos Jack was supporting his brother who is in jail, and they grew close. Dave invited Jack's parents to this Brits and surprised them with this homage.
By the way the last part since the point he stands up is not on original track, he added it for Brits awards.

Instant follow from me mate. I've seen dozens of reactions to this video but none of them so acute and heartfelt.
Jack Merritt was a man who came from the absolute elite class of privilege in this country, but had used his position to work towards prison reform and particularly the (as he put it) 'over-representation' of black men in British prisons. He'd worked to support Dave's brother, who himself was in prison. He was murdered during a conference on offender rehabilitation.
What you said towards the end of the video about civilisation really got me. As a white man in the UK, I've been educated, subliminally but effectively, to believe that we hold the keys to civilisation and that people of colour are being allowed access to civilisation on sufferance and on the basis of our whim. And this is a collective idea that we have to shake off if we're ever going to move forward as a society.
The best thing about this performance is that it was live on TV at the Brit award, which is the British equivalent of the Grammys, you wouldn't get this on American TV.

I almost didn't watch this video because it was long, but when I heard your voice I wanted to hear your thoughts.
By god I am so ashamed to be white when I hear what your innocent child faces!
I had to explain what racism is to my children back in 2020.
My TWELVE year old had no concept of racism!
She went to a school that was in the middle of a very poor area and a very wealthy area so as the kids all wear uniform and sit in the same room, they are all equal in that space.
She was so confused and doubted my revelation.
I said to her that racists often come from racist families.
That even if a young person disagreed with their parents racist views, much damage is already done.
I only ever had a mild issue with my younger daughter who at 5yo wished her Indian and African besties were white like her.
I showed her native dancing involving little girls like her friends and said to her: if you had been born in those countries your friends might have said to their mummies "I wish Jazz had brown skin like me."
Within 20 minutes my innocent child understood enough about her Friends backgrounds to never consider it further and SHE went on to be diagnosed autistic.
There is NO excuse for racism.
