    I painted a '64 corvette with black spray can duplicolor for about $200 bucks and got over $60,000 for the car. I was honest with the buyer that it was Acrylic Lacquer paint, but I left out the spray can part. But it shined like a brand new car. The secret is careful preparation, sealing, lots of paint, wet sanding and carefully buffing. These Rustoleum jobs are not BS, they can look great.

      What's the point of wet sanding and in what stage should I do it? Basically, what I am doing is:
      1. With the orbital sander, I am using 220 grit sand -> 320 grit sand -> 400 grit sand.
      2. Wash the car to remove any dust, dirt, and debris because I do not have an air compressor.
      3. Rustoleum Turbo Can Primer.
      4. Wet Sand 400 grit
      5. Rustoleum Black Turbo Can
      6. Wet sand 1000 grit?
      7. 2K Clear Coat
      This is the steps and order I want to do my paint job, is there anything I am missing or should note on? This is my first time doing this job.

      EXACTLY LOL.. No definitely my fault putting to much paint on that hood and then it ran right off onto the fender 😂

  • @janofb
    @janofb 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    Always start at the top first and and work your way outwards. That way you have less chance of runs due to excessive paint (although I think you just laid it on way too thick on the side of the hood) and less chance of you or your air hose rubbing up against wet paint. For a first time, not bad. My first time I mixed the paint/thinner ratio backwards and got spit balls all over the hood. Paint was way too thick for the gun to atomize. Fortunately it was fairly easy to remove them, remix, and shoot again. Came out great. Live and learn. As for the naysayers here, LEARN FROM HIS EXPERIENCE so you don't make the same errors.
    As for the runs, there's a technique you can use to remove runs, although you have a LOT there. spread a thin layer of bondo over the area, let it dry, and start wet sanding it. The bondo protects the lower paint while you sand off the runs. As you get close to level, use finer wet sand paper. As soon as all the bondo is sanded away, the runs will be gone too. Takes practice so you don't sand right through the paint. For you, I'd re-sand the whole fender and edge of hood and re shoot.

    Single stage paint jobs are perfectly acceptable. I've done hundreds. For a while I used a "recipe" that worked really well. It was basically a cheap enamel mixed with a good brand name catalyst and high-end reducer. It worked very well, laid down smooth, and stayed nice and glossy for years later. I even did a few family members' cars this way. Now you won't colour match and blend with the same success as 2 stage jobs, but for low cost, all-over jobs, it worked fine and had very acceptable results. Practice and knowing your equipment will go a long way to preventing runs.

      This was a situation where I had a small paint reaction and tried putting a little more paint on it which developed into a run. I've sprayed paint all the way down to 25 degrees no runs at all.. Sometimes we just have them days lol

    Hey good job on that paint job Marco! Just so you know I used Rustoleum reduced down because it was cheap and then used speedokote paint over that then the speedokote clear and it turned out great, I use this method when I can not spend the money on a sealer. Rustoleum is cheap and only needs something like acetone to reduce it 1/3. The sheen I use is satin then the actual base coat over that and it turns out PERFECT! Anyway another cheap way to get great results on a budget

    I have a 1998 infiniti in black. the spoiler and front bumper paint was wearing thin. I figured I would take it to the paint shop and have it fixed. The guy gave me an estimate of over 1 thousand dollars to paint a spoiler and a front bumper. He wanted 1800 to include the hood. Needless to say I did not get my car painted there. A few months later i was in lowes, saw a rustoleum can that said black car repair spray paint. 9 bucks. I bought it and sprayed my areas in 25 minutes to include tape up. it looks surprisingly good and the color matches. You are doing great work for prices people can afford. watching that paint go in is like watching a magic show. its just amazing how good it comes out. thanks for the videos. and FJB

      My father was a painter for 30+ years, and still sometimes got runs...
      The key to go a good painter / bodywork specialist.. isnt NOT getting runs...
      its about knowing what to change for next time, to minimise it... also knowing how to overcome that run, and not let it ruin the project...
      Extremely common to get a run, especially if you are using a new spray gun etc.. While you are learning the gun, and how it likes to be setup...

    • @thistledewoutdoors3331
      @thistledewoutdoors3331 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes it would. And you can do it over single stage if you wanted to.. you just have to be easy on the prep work as to not sand irregular that produces color differences so that when you drop coat pearl in clear coat - it won't show thru..... My best advice is to use grey scotchie pads and scuff up the single stage just prior to full cure... Add pearl to clear coat and proceed with a "tack coat" with increased gun distance with 75% overlap with an immediate cross cross orientation coat as soon as you complete a panel so the pearls flow out... Follow up with 2 full wet coats..
      Now get er done !!!
