The two thing people often forget:
-Spider-Man is a LOT stronger than he lets on. Like tossing cars casually strong.
-Hulk is not just a rage monster. He is completely capable of the entire range of emotion, including compassion and loyalty.
Just Cars??... He managed to support an entire ginormous Skyscraper!! If not MORE then this. And yeah, big green is also far more then just a primal monster.
This is Child Compassionate Savage Hulk not Adult Angry Bitter Savage Hulk even the personalities have inconsistencies sometimes especially with Savage Hulk being so different with many incarnations like the one who was separated from Banner after fighting Onslaught and went on to man handle Gladiator was a Bitter Adult like Savage Hulk

I don't know if many noticed but toward the end of the fight. Hulk legit just let Spidey vent. He stood there and took it. While he ranted about finding MJ. Fucking love the compassion that hulk showed
Yeah. Hulk could've bodied spiderman at any point of this fight but he didn't because he didn't want to hurt him and just tried to get spiderman to leave. At the end when he realized spiderman was hurting emotionally he just let spiderman hit him until he calmed down. Hulk didn't even budge when spiderman kept hitting him towards the end and spiderman just ended up hurting his own hands.

Spidey was also for quite some time one of the few who was able to talk an enraged hulk down. Hulk defiently could of bodies Spidey but just wanted to be left alone
Right? I hate when writers try to make the Hulk some super dark, almost demonic creature that's barely on the right side, if he even is. This was always the Hulk. Misunderstood, constantly tragedy-stricken, temperamental, but never truly a monster at heart. Just wants people to be nice to him or leave him alone. Why make it something other than that?
@@calebstephan2083 not really. Hulk would find it impossible to land a hit on spidey. If these two fought for real then it would be a stalemate as spidey can’t hurt hulk and hulk can’t hit spidey.

That ending was so great, I love seeing Hulk even in his most animalistic state have compassion for people.

I like how it's clear that Peter can't really keep up with Hulk in strength, but he's using everything else to his advantage to keep the big guy at bay and always have the maintain the advantage.

Spider-Man has like 20-30tons at best in lifting strength, whereas the Savage Hulk(the normal green Hulk that most comics feature) has 70tons lifting strength before he gets more by getting angry. Hulk's durability is almost equal to his strength so Spider-Man with his 20-30ton serious punches wouldn't do much apart from bruising Hulk.

@@thatdudemin3139 Hulk can regenerate his heart entirely in mere seconds, he can go toe to toe with sentry as sentry unleashes his full power, he could simply crush Peters brain with his grip. Peter holds back a lot for sure, but not even peter is a match for the Hulk if he lets go.
There are guidebooks and narrator statements of Spidey going toe to toe with characters out of his power class.
"I'm pissed off, so let me use *The Hulk* as a stress ball." Smart, Petey.
Peter is a genius, but he's not always all that sensible.
Actually that would be the best bet, not many Heroes around that can handle him going completely all out and in the back of his mind he did know that The Hulk was good.

Hulk comes out of this looking pretty good. The instant empathy that cuts through the rage, the knowledge that sometimes the best thing he can do is let the other guy work through the thing locking them down emotionally. The complete lack of a grudge at being attacked and pained because he recognizes that it's coming from the other guy also being in pain.

Even the HULK acknowledged Spideys strength. What a absolute boss!
To be fair hulk has acknowledge multiple heroes strength, not only spidermans. It was still clear in this encounter that hulk was still vastly superior to spiderman. He didn't want to hurt spiderman, he just wanted him to go away. He could've just knocked him out when he grabbed spiderman but he just yelled at him and told him to go away. Heck hulk even stood still and let spiderman hit him towards the end of the fight and hulk didn't budge whereas spiderman just ended up hurting his hand.

The fact that Hulk went from a blind rage to a sympathetic smolder that quickly after realizing that he was processing his wife's supposed death is equally heart warming and heartbreaking
Spider-Man should never beat the Hulk by brawn but he could beat him by brains and having the hulk call him strong puts in perspective how powerful he is

2021 killed comics sorry
I happened to read this story when it was released around 2000. It is one of the last episodes written by Howard Mackie before leaving "The amazing Spider-Man" to Strackzynski (right spelling, I hope). Mackie was considered the worst ASM main storyteller in that period. I'm glad someone else is enjoying these stories of his, which I liked when I first read them. I don't mean Mackie was the greatest ASM runner of all time. I mean he was far better than those who came afer Strackzynski, in my humble opinion.

Yes. Definitely a wholesome fight. As much as Spider Man is one of my absolute favorites and i will always root for him, I know the Hulk will always be the epitome of raw power. Spider Man is not incapable of hurting the hulk in minuscule ways, hitting him at weak points, breaking an extremity or even, under extreme circumstances, maybe a limb ...maybe.
But we know he would certainly die at the hands of a raging Hulk. It's unfortunate, but it's facts.
I love that the writers keep this in mind and let the Hulk just allow Peter to alleviate his stress.
Hulk understands rage better than anyone; how it distorts your reality, how it consumes you, and how you give it release.
The ending is really wholesome, it shows that when heroes are in conflict it doesn't always have to end in someone getting beaten

Because Spider-Man is meant to be so agile he’s drawn in a way that gives most comic book readers the impersonation that he is not very strong when in reality he stronger than most of the marvel superheroes he just doesn’t use it because he’s not trying to hurt people
Spiderman is not stronger than most. He is stronger than characters like Captian America or others in that kinda league. He doesn't rank in the top 10 or 50 in strength. I dont listen to guide books because in the prime they said he was a kid so he would get stronger but they dont really write him correctly.

There was a time in Marvel where Spider-man was literally #3 on the physical strength scale after Hulk and Thing. That was after Thor had been introduced. The cast has grown since then, and a few characters have inserted themselves into the rankings above Spidey, but the number of named Marvel characters above him is still far smaller than the number of named Marvel characters below him.
@@caffeinedelusions Also people keep forgetting that most of the other marvel characters have been portrayed in their physical peak where is Spider-Man is always supposed to be portrayed as the 15 year old kid he’s always been or at least mostly portrayed as young growing into a superhero look at the movies besides Rami most of them based around him in high school. The time of his most iconic villains. But in reality Spider-Man is really at his best when he’s an adult doing adult shit.
He isn't stronger than most marvel superheroes but he is among the strongest out of the street level heroes. I can literally name over ten heroes that can blow up planets and that's just the heroes I know of, their could be more. I love spiderman but nah fam.
Hulk being the absolute unit he should always have been written as. He wasn't always just some rage monster. He knows pain, and he knows compassion. He knows what it's like to grieve better than almost any character in Marvel. Most of all, he *definitely* understands better than anyone how, sometimes, the only way to let it all out is to completely lose yourself in the rage and pain. Bottling it up just destroys you from the inside, as he's learned. After all, he's had a front row seat to all that Banner's repressed emotions have wrought.
Hulk's a real one, Spidy needed that
Two of my favorite scenes of Spider-Man were against Jigsaw and Morbius.
Both considered him like a relentless demon in pursuit. Jigsaw was scared crapless because he couldn't get away in spite of shooting at him. Spider-Man quietly hunted him down from the shadows.
Morbius was basically the same deal but in the sewers. Deathly afraid of Spider-Man again and got taken down.
I would love Marvel to do a series from a Villain's perspective after Spider-Man gets his sights set on them and name the series Relentless.
A minor baddy with an organization like Tarantula.
Back in Black, Spider-Man vs Kingpim was great too

What comic do these two occur?
I never understood why when hulk says leave him alone, no one does. This shows the amount of damage that is done when anyone tries to "stop" Hulk. When Hulk is not antagonized or in danger, he calms down. When the Avengers, Spiderman, Fury or the other heroes try to "stop" Hulk by attacking him, he becomes more angry and stronger. Who's gonna pay for all the damages they cause. Why not handle the situation like an adult? Nobody wants to be attacked when they're upset. When our friends and family are upset, we don't attack them. We try to help them. I'm sure Hulk would appreciate a hug or some comforting words. Something other than cars being hurled at him or missiles.
The comedy is that Tony Stark calls out the military on this EXACT THING in the comics. He basically makes a bet with General Ross that if he's put in command of the military force deployed for Hulk attacks, Hulk's property damage will go from the billion-dollar-range to pocket change and his approach will singlehandedly save the military budget.
His strategy? When the Hulk starts roaring and squaring up, just have the military sit there and watch. Hulk does more roaring, the military does nothing, Hulk smashes a street to show off his power, the military does nothing. Hulk just... has nothing to feed off. He's used to them attacking him, but once it's clear they're not doing anything? He just jumps away, confused and harmless. Tony pays for the damage to the street out of pocket. And NO-ONE LEARNS FROM THIS.

And Hulk is one of the most misunderstood heros he has compassion and always thinks about going away from people rather then cause damage although in some fights you can't help it cuz the villains are what they are. Okay, I actually cried at the end. Comics usually don't get me emotional, but when Hulk or Spider-Man are involved, they have the most compassion towards people, and it gets me when Hulk revealed his wife died too, and they should set aside their differences and save the train.
The fact hulks blind rage vanished upon seeing Peter’s own rage and reasoning shows that he isn’t just a mindless monster. He understands, it’s just that nobody has ever took to time to understand him
You see Hulk is really not a bad guy he just looses it when people constantly mess with him when all he wants to be is left alone.
This is why I like these characters. Spider-Man is actually insanely strong when put in the right circumstance. Not saying he could deal with The Hulk on any level of strength in an extended fight, but he has way more strength than he lets on or maybe even knows himself. It's his loyalty to loved ones and innocents in danger that lets it spike to the levels you see in the comics.
But then there's The Hulk who is exponentially and quite obviously stronger than 'Bug Man' but he still has a heart even when he is a rage-fuelled monster.
The MCU should adapt this into future films, except that The Hulk is kind of ruled out at this point.

Spiderman once broke a professional boxer’s hand just by flexing on impact. Spiderman‘s fists break and bleed on hulk’s muscles.
These gaps in power are similar.
Actually hulk and spidermans power is still vastly distanced than that. Hulk when he goes all out nearly wiped out the dark dimension. Dormamus sister got so concerned of the destruction he was causing that she forced strange to send him back to Earth from him to calm down.the only version of spiderman that could keep up with a pissed off hulk is cosmic spiderman but that's spiderman with the uni power which is a source of power that isn't his own. It's a source of power that has used several heroes as hosts.

@Call of Gruty Even Though guide books put Spiderman’s stats at around 20 Tons and “calm” Hulk at around 100 Tons, the actual numbers are higher than that by atleast 10 folds. The Handbooks were just oversimplifying things.
But Hulk could get stronger than that. Like Trillions of Tons strong.
So while it might be fair to say Spiderman could put up a good fight agaisnt a Base Hulk, it’s definitely an exaggeration to say Spiderman could beat Hulk outright no matter what because Hulk’s full potential when he’s angry is far above Peter.

It ain't about winning, it's about putting up a good fight. As much as I love Spidey, he ain't beating The Hulk in brute strength. And how others have said, major props to Hulk for letting Spidey vent and wail on him. Not much can take the toll of an angry Spider-Man, but Hulk's got muscle to spare.
The Hulk deserves a great deal of credit here. That was cool, to see him just take the punishment because he knows the pain present and is doing what he can to help. That's great patience from someone that isn't touted as being patient and the same of kindness.
World war hulk storyline just hits even harder now. All hulk wants is to be left alone that’s it. He said he tried making friends and they are either scared or turn on him.
You could tell at the end clearly that the Hulk was never trying.

Hulk didn't want to kill Spidey. He was annoyed. When Peter started venting about Mary Jane hulk just took it. The last few panels where hulk just taking it. It puts it into perspective that hulk was stronger physically, but also funnily enough emotionally at that moment. Spidey looked good the whole fight than the last few panels was hulk evening the play field really good comic imho

I was looking for a complaint but I also couldn't find one... so I'll add one here: I don't believe they could have fixed the train track to the degree they did, allowing the train to continue past at high speed without derailing.

I love Hulk and Spider-Mans relationship, they're good friends, even when they first really met, Hulk realized Spider-Man was hurting early on and let him get out his frustrations and anger and pain by being his personal punching bag... they're just great to see together and I enjoy there encounters
If Spider-man had just talked with the Hulk, Hulk would have probably just explained the situation and empathized with Spider-Man's anger and fear. That's the lesson, you should only use fists when words fail.

My guess is he was holding back until he got hit into the newspaper because spiderman uses qips to occupy his mind, as well as to anger his enemies into making mistakes, but the 2nd option makes no sense so he was probably holding back slightly until then, he also didn't start bleeding until then so it makes sense
I love the friendship between Spiderman and the Hulk. It seems like spiderman is the only person hulk will allow to perch on his shoulder.

There was an issue of Daredevil where he fought the Hulk even though he knew had absolutely no chance of winning. It was a great story, I believe one of Frank Miller's first on the character

I just love how Spider-Man casually did a JoJo style flurry of punches on Hulk near the end.
Hulk was annoyed at start but took the hits easily after realising what Spidey was going through

Well not so smart in strats but he could just stand still the entire time and wait for an opening to grab Spidey and then get him with 2-3 of his heaviest moves
One of hulks heaviest blows could kill spiderman. Hulk once when he was serious cracked Thors skull with a single punch. Thor is way more durable than spiderman. If hulk wanted to he could've straight up chucked spiderman across the city.
What's crazy is Spiderman always fights people and comes out on top or not dead when he's supposed to example being Hercules and Juggernaut

Spider-Man and hulk in the comics is always a duo I loved a lot, they always come around to respect each other (even tho hulk can be stupid most of the time) they always made me smile and always had good chemistry imo

i had a Spiderman comic in the 70s where he was swinging through NY city and came upon the hulk having a rampage. Spiderman then attacked him so fast and threw so many punches that it caught Hulk off guard and it knocked him out! I've long since lost that comic, but I haven't been able to find it online. Anyone remember that one?
I remember him saying he staggered the Hulk and it either broke his hand or it nearly did it. Spiderman was much better back in the 70s
He bit him in the temple repeatedly and did break his hand. He mentions he got lucky and was able to catch him by surprise. It was a good comic because hulk later remembers him for doing that called him strong.

@@realamericannegro977 yeah inconsistency in comics is really annoying. Having someone perform a feat out of their normal range sometimes makes sense because adrenaline is a hell of a drug. But they do it to often and then retcon that feat a few issues later

its not everyday the spider-man gets to go all out and not hold back. he really needed that
man can't help but feel bad for Hulk at the start, dude just wanted to be alone, but Spiderman had it really rough at that time, even Hulk could tell. Spiderman put a good fight but it's Hulk, he's not gonna win that with brute force. How they both work together in the end was very wholesome. overall this is like peak comics, what they can be at their best like back in the day

Whenever Spidey gets genuinely angry, he doesn't hold back. Never seen a weak angry spider-man. Battle is usually over in a few seconds, since Spider-Man has already made a plan of where he wants you and what he's going to do to you before you can say oops
This is why Spider-Man is my favorite hero. Moments like these highlight his character

Everyone thinks Hulk is just a monster but underneath all that rage he has compassion love and generally doesn’t mean or want to hurt others at all.

Hulk always had more compassion than he was given credit for. As Amadeus Cho pointed out, if he hadn't been compassionate and also used Banner's intellect on at least a subconscious level, then Hulk would have one of the worst body counts out there.
Back when heroes could disagree and still work together. This is how they should do Hulk, show how powerful and indestructible he can be, but how he can also be helpful when need be. Just like he held up that mountain in Secret Wars.

This is why I have to start reading original comics! I’ve only ever watched the Spiderman and the hulk movies so reading what they say isn’t the same as an actor reading a script, it’s just a story written by one person and reading allows you to picture how they really feel like. And I feel like having the hulk talk during his scenes in movies would’ve really added to the character.

This is one my favorite issues ever. I been looking for this issue for a long time. I actually cried when I read this issue. Just Hulk reaction to see Peter on pain made this so much better.
Hulk deep down is big softy. If every one could see who he really is they wouldn't fear him they embrace him. All though the people kind did during World War Hulk. I think people were pretty much sick of the heroes after Civil War. When Hulk came along and put them in their place they cheered him on.
