Why is The Owl House More Popular Than Amphibia?

  • Time to answer a question that I thought no one was asking. Popularity of a show is normally not something that people should care about. But with Amphibia and The Owl House, it's something that I find oddly interesting because it shouldn't make sense in my opinion. The Owl House got such a huge following but got cut short by Disney. Meanwhile, Amphibia did not draw as big of a crowd, but it was allowed to reach its conclusion in one piece. Why is that?

So it's been a day since I uploaded this video, and I got some things to say in response to some of the comments here.
First off, there is another key reason for this popularity gap between the shows that I didn't mention which is how they're airing schedules for season 1. Amphibia's S1 all aired within one month in a bomb format which heavily hindered the shows ability to build up its audience over a longer period of time. Meanwhile, The Owl House was fortunate enough to have its S1 air with one episode per week with a few month long hiatus in between; thus allowing more time to develop a following. However, I intentionally left it out because I believe The Owl House would still overtake Amphibia in popularity regardless due to the other factors I mentioned being much stronger. While I can't exactly prove that as a statistical counterfactual, there's some plausibility there that I can't include it as an objective reason.
Secondly, some people here are just saying that TOH is just objectively better to watch than Amphibia and try to bring up things like, better character development, better world building and so on. You have the right to believe that opinion. But I didn't mention those reasons because they are more subjective. You can use those reasons to explain why *you* prefer one show over the other. But it's still an opinion in the end. The point of this video to use relatively hard facts to explain why more people prefer TOH which is a statistical fact that I stated. Neither show is objectively better to watch than the other. That's all down to personal preference. But you can use statistics and basic knowledge of human psychology to see why more people have these preferences.
Ok, I probably didn't have to write this long comment. But I hope you get my point :p

There's also the difference in how the first seasons of both aired. Amphibia released its whole first season within a month, meaning it didn't have much chance to catch people's attention before going silent for nearly a year versus The Owl House which released a new episode each week for around 8 months and came back around 9 to 10 months later. The Owl House had at least 8 times as much time to catch people's attention as Amphibia did with just the first seasons.

    • @MarngelRambles
      @MarngelRambles  ปีที่แล้ว +44

That is true. The airing schedule for their season 1s played a role in their popularity. Although, I didn't bring it up in the video is because if the roles were reversed, The Owl House would probably still be a lot more popular than Amphibia. Maybe the gap wouldn't be as big, but still noticeable

    • @jark06

The number one thing that I seriously liked about the Owl House is the amount of animation work put in each scene like there are so many scenes that just become so fluid for so many scenes I know Amphibia does have cool fight scenes but it’s mostly the one frame kind of scenes where one character punches then cuts to another character punch but if you actually rewatch the fight scenes in the Owl House it’s like it’s a full on boss battle of the episode

7:36 this is exactly why Disney likes Gravity Falls and Amphibia: because both shows appeal to both young children, teen, and adult audiences, satisfy the advertisers of Disney Channel (most of the time), and Disney allowed Matt Braly and Alex Hirsch to finish their shows the way they intended by their own choice. Matt and Alex followed what Disney wanted them to do with Disney Standards and Practices, and in return, Disney let them do what they wanted to do with their own shows.
Dana Terrace, however, was a Disney Channel innovator (someone who broke the rules, which is not a bad thing), she wanted to appeal to a teen and young adult audience (which IMO, she should have pitched The Owl House to Adult Swim, they’ll pick it up in a heartbeat), she wanted to take risks, and sort of didn’t follow Disney’s S&Ps. I’m glad she did all that, especially when Disney themselves needs to spice things up once in a while because they can’t stay family-friendly forever, but unfortunately those choices she made (with the exception of LGBTQ rep) was what got her show cancelled by Disney executives.

While i love both shows. Owl house never really clicked with me as much as Amphibia has,
Amphibia's sense of humour always makes me laugh when rewatching, The settings like Newtopia and 1st temple fit perfectly into my love of fantasy and the ending always makes me tear up especially hop pop telling Anne she will always have a place to stay with the Plantars even when she'll never be able to return,
While Owl house has some amazing things i adore like Lumity, Hooty, Belos and his backstory and the Collector, i never could properly immerse myself with the world and the magic system.
The ending also didn't work for me, not in terms of quality, it was amazingly done and the animation was stunning to watch but i didn't have that "oh, its over now" empty feeling like i had with almost every other show I've watched, if anything watching it felt more like an obligation to finish a show i liked compared to wanting to see how it ends
I still love Owl house but Amphibia fits in with what i personally see as perfect for me and stands as my overall favourite show.

The obligation to finish a show thing was designed to ensure it could never return. Another great Animated show called Dead End: Paranormal Park was cancelled and ended on a cliffhanger. This gives it the potential to have a comeback anytime in the future to finish the story. The Owl House was forced into completion so any comeback could run the risk of plot holes, ruin the formal ending by simply continuing the show at all, and just drag out until people get bored of it. Honestly if Dead End ever comes back it will only really raise the likely hood that The Owl House will never return because it doesn’t really need to and Dead End does because it has a story to complete.

While Amphibia had no issues being dark, as seen with the classic content warning, I think The Owl House maintained it's dark tone in a way that makes it feel like a more serious show, and therefore attracted more attention online. Especially season 1, as both are episodic, but Amphibia is definitely lacking in seriousness early on. Although it's themes towards gay and trans people are more subtle than The Owl House. I may just be looking into it but the way Anne is shown to have bad self-esteem but slowly throughout the show is finally starting to love herself, feels like a relatable trans experience for me. I even relate to Sasha Waybright the most in the show because (it might just be me) but I think being a trans person makes them more likely to be a bad person without even realizing it. I am a victim of this. I was a pretty bad person due to how much pent up anger and frustration I had in me from being a trans person dealing with discrimination. I arguably think Amphibia was better at showing gay and trans people in the show. Despite it being more subtle it shows that being that way is normal. (Not saying The Owl House didn't say that too)

When the jocks were finally beaten in the end, it was because more people could identify with the nerds than the Jocks.
I feel that Anne was a great character but she didn't have the social or traumatic experiences that Luz prior to entering Amphibia. For that reason, I believe more adults who watch Cartoons were able to find her more relatable. It was obvious from Episode 1 of The Owl House that Luz was not popular and was some what of a nerd.

I like Matt Braly’s humor, but only in small doses. Since it determines the tone and is baked into the plot, it makes the characters feel more apathetic. There are parts I like, but I can’t tell if it’s cuz there’s less plot or if GF plays a part (I loved Big Henry from GF, and I liked the GF episode in Amphibia).

Personally I think The Owl House has a way better momentum than Amphibia. Owl House season one does a really nice job of introducing key characters and 'rules' of the world, it shows a lot of different magic types, explains to us the history of the boiling isles and introduces a lot of important locations. Then in season 2 it uses this as a springboard to launch straight into the story regarding Belos. We already know who everyone from season one is and we already understand the rules of the situation (Luz has unique magic, Eda has lost her magic and the portal is gone). I feel like this allows season 2 to have a better story from episode to episode. Every episode some kind of progress is made towards their current goal which is why it doesn't feel like there is any filler to it.
In the case of Amphibia I'm not so sure, I liked it a lot but season one didn't really grasp me as much as TOH did, I even stopped watching for a few weeks before picking it up again. It just felt like there was no real goal there at the start, imo there should have been more focus on Sasha and the music box. I actually really liked season 2 of Amphibia during the travelling part. I think having the main cast travel across the land over multiple episodes was a great idea and it flowed really well. And as for season 3 it sits somewhere in the middle. Season 2 had gotten me invested enough to want to keep watching but S3 itself wasn't as great as S2.
Overall like I said I think Toh just flows better from episode to episode and has clear goals all the way through the series, especially in season 2. I didn't mention TOH season 3 here because it was made under different circumstances and I don't think it would be fair to compare it to S3 of Amphibia. However I think if S3 had been a full 20 episode long season and kept the momentum from season 2 it would have been the best Animated TV show content out there.
(Also want to mention how amazing TOH's character arcs are. Amity and Hunter are definitely the best examples, and they play really nicely into the story of each season.)

Yeah, I had a similar thought when watching this video. When you think about it’s Amphibia had more of a slice of life story for most of season one, and the lack of plot development compared to shows that had been around prior to it, such as gravity, Falls, DuckTales, and even star versus the forces of evil, might have had a factor in causing some disappointment with it where is the owl House had decent level supply progression even in season 1 compared to even the other shows I mentioned

To be fair, Amphibia isn't that kind of show. It's an almost completely episodic series with a little bit of plot to tie everything together. Usually whenever I hear people talk about Amphibia, it's either "skip all of season 1 because it's garbage" or "I love season 1 the most" or something in between

The Owl House effectively ended at the same time as Amphibia. It’s just that The Owl House was dragged on for another year by the three specials so it kinda just faded away while Amphibia had it’s final episodes come out every week and had a full stop at the series finale. So Amphibia watchers were still on the high well after it ended while The Owl House watchers were gradually let down for a year by the long wait for every special so by the time that series finale aired the show had already felt over for a while and people had moved on.

  • @engineer-of-souls
    @engineer-of-souls ปีที่แล้ว +14

I prefer The Owl House over Amphibia a great deal and I think the reason can be found in the first seasons. Almost every episode of The Owl House ties to the overarching narrative. Luz has a clear goal, she’s interested in magic and wants to learn. She finds friends, goes to school, learns about Eda & Lilith and the Island. Very few episodes feel unconnected to the overarching story (like the bodyswap episode).
At the same time the first season of Amphibia feels like a whole lot of nothing. Majority of the episodes consist of Anne selfishly doing something she’s not supposed to and dealing with the consequences. And because it happens episode after episode I don’t feel she has any growth and so she stays annoying. Only a couple of episodes deal with the music box or Sasha, the whole problem of being stuck in frogland is almost forgotten. When the episodes are self-contained, kids might enjoy the show but older watchers might grow bored of the repeating antics and switch off.

    • @jark06
      @jark06 ปีที่แล้ว +6

I agree with most of this. I never found Anne annoying but I never really clicked with her like I did with Luz. And yeah I wish there was more focus on Sasha or the Music box.

    • @engineer-of-souls
      @engineer-of-souls ปีที่แล้ว +9

@@jark06 I think “annoying” was a bit too harsh a word but brash and selfish maybe? With Luz I could always see that she was coming from a good place when she got into trouble. She invites her friends over despite Eda’s orders to cheer them up. She stands up for King and in her excitement challenges Amity. She borrows Eda’s staff because she caused her friends to miss the “bus” and even tries to ask permission.
Anne’s problems start when she tries to get out of work, scams the villagers, brings in unwanted pets or rides the snail against orders. Her motivations feel selfish, and without knowing her background, her actions are harder to justify. Add this to the fact that every episode’s message feels to be a different form of “take others into account”, it can get a bit repetitive, especially when Anne’s growth isn’t evident. You could shuffle around most of Amphibia’s episodes pretty freely without changing anything.

I think another point you could add here regards the actual behind the scenes production of both shows. Because of TOH's riskier production, I think a lot of people felt a lot more endeared to it as it felt as if we were taking part in our own little "rebellion against the system". Disney constantly kneecapped the show at every turn, and it was incredible to watch it defy all odds and push out an ending that was genuinely well received. Argue all you want about which show's story was better, but Amphibia had far less obstacles to overcome in this regard and was able to tell its story in a much less intense albeit safer environment. With this in mind, you can probably see how following TOH over Amphibia seems more exciting for viewers.

I personally prefer TOH and would watch it over Amphibia, but Amphibia is still one of my favourite shows and is a fun watch in my opinion because of its unique world, which TOH also has but I myself have never seen anything that’s “magical” to do with frogs before so it’s definitely a shame that them like lots of other recent cartoons in Disney only got 3 seasons :)
Edit: I also love its diversity in LGBTQ+ representation and race, with Ann’s culture being portrayed in a positive light as is Luz’s sexuality and different family structures in TOH which make the two shows stand out!

I prefer toh due to personal biases, but I adore both shows. I think another point to make could be the way the two shows handle similar messages differently. In amphibia, the calamity trio aren’t just normal kids - they’re special prophesied children with inherent magical abilities and a path to follow. I’m not saying that this is a bad approach, and I had as much fun watching calamity Anne do her thing as anyone, but this is a simple way at looking at the world and the way it works. Toh, on the other hand, makes an explicit point that Luz is NOT a legendary hero. She’s just a kid who, by being kind to and interested in the world and people around her, gained the courage and overall desire to make change. She’s the hero who chose HERSELF, and I think this message of “don’t wait for something to make you special, make yourself special!” is something that the high school/college/young adult demographic really needs as we begin to figure out what we want for ourselves in life. Idk if I’m making sense with any of this, but it could explain why this show is more popular with an older community.
    Anyways, thanks for reading!

The biggest financial mistake that disney made with TOH was canceling it. Like he said it appeals to an older demographic, however this older demographic has money or at least more than 9-11 yr olds. They get billions in merchandising each year. With a demographic of people with money who REALLY love the show, they would eat merchandise up like it was nothing. The owl house could have made them lots of merchandising profits with plushies and other such. Anyways, I digress.

Gonna be honest, I much prefer Amphibia over The Owl House but both shows are AMAZING! I like the way Amphibia made me laugh as well as cry. I found it way more relatable considering how much I relate to Sprig. I also relate to Anne and Marcy a lot too. I think the main thing that pulled me over with Amphibia was its message. It's a show all about change. I feel like everyone needs that kind of message in their lives. I think the reason that I personally needed it so much is because I'm a teenager. Not only is my body changing, I'M changing too! I'm a new person now than I was before, and Amphibia has really given me a different perspective on things. Not to say that The Owl House isn't a good show, cause it was still a masterpiece! I just found myself relating to Amphibia a lot more, I liked the story and characters SO MUCH. I loved the character development in Amphibia, especially the way Matt Braly and his crew were able to transform Anne from a lazy doormat that was seen as a monster to a very responsible hero. Sasha, Marcy, and even the Plantars had MAJOR character development. Not to say that The Owl House didn't have awesome character development, cause boy did it ever!!! Luz and the Clawthornes had lots of development, as well as Amity,(especially Amity), and Willow, Gus, and Hunter. There was just something about the characters in Amphibia that the character development just hit spot on with! And I like how well the development went with the theme of the show: change. Now, when I say this, I don't mean to put down TOH in any way at all, but I didn't exactly know what the theme of TOH even was. It was an amazing show with lots of character development, and lots of moments that really brought out the best in the characters, but I didn't exactly understand the message itself. Was it to be yourself? If so, that's a good message, but doesn't exactly have that powerful impact on me the way that Amphibia did. Now I know for some people, that wouldn't be the case, and I get that! I completely get that. But for me personally, I needed that message about change in my life. I REALLY needed it. Change has always been a big thing in my life, and I'm not going to get into why, considering that it's something very personal, as well as something I have a hard time talking about, but it has caused me much anxiety in my life, and this show is just what I needed! It didn't get rid of my anxiety, but now it's my go-to when I'm having anxiety. The Owl House doesn't exactly help me the way Amphibia does, so that's just another reason as to why I like Amphibia more. But of course, that's just for me personally, and not another point I'm trying to make as to why the show's better. I'm not even entirely saying the show is better. I do think that the show is better, definitely. But I'm not trying to prove it's better, I'm just giving my opinions and thoughts as to why I think it's a better show. But for anyone who prefers The Owl House, whether it's just a little more or a lot, I understand! TOH is still an AMAZING show in my opinion! It does grow on me the more I watch it, I just find Amphibia with a much more relatable storyline and characters. Thanks for reading, and peace out! ✌ Great video, Marngel! You answered my universal question!

I prefer the owl house more. I had a very difficult time watching the first season because I actually expected the same amount of emotional depth and the more mature jokes as the Owl House. I loved TOH and I heard they were similar and equally as good. So I got very frustrated with Anne being an dishonest, unlikeable brat and it felt like half of the first season episodes where lessons of "don't lie". I thought the lessons felt childish and something Anne should've already learned at her age. It didn't feel like the lessons or any of the adventures stuck, so I stopped caring because it didn't feel like anything mattered except the lesson of the day (which might not stick either). And I just missed the emotional baggage Anne should have, like being homesick, thinking or being reminded about her parents, or her friends. We basically get no reason for her wanting to go back except that she doesn't want to live in dirty-slimey-frog-world.
Everything changed for me in season 2 and 3. But man I had a hard time watching it in the beginning. That slow build up is what I think makes me like TOH more.

Honestly, Marngel, I’m kind of in the same boat as you! I liked TOH for a while, but now, I’ve come to love Amphibia more than any other show in existence! And it’s pretty much for the same reasons you described: while the LGBTQIA+ rep in TOH is awesome, I like the platonic relationships in Amphibia more. And there’s a LOT of good life lessons to be learned from watching Amphibia, as pretty much EVERY SINGLE EPISODE in Season 1 has Anne learning at least one of them! Sasha and Marcy learn quite a few as well throughout the remainder of the show! Also, when I finished Amphibia (which was in June of this year last I recall - yes, I know I’m VERY late lol), I wanted to choose my absolute FAVORITE character from the entire trilogy (now that I’ve seen all 3 shows in it). And in the end, it came down to a VERY close battle between Luz and Marcy. And while Luz was one of the greatest characters that animation in general has EVER SEEN…
    _…MARCY WON!!!_
The funny thing is, I’m literally IDENTICAL to Marcy! I’m hyperactive, clumsy, quite the Minecraft nerd, and I sometimes talk too much. I also happen to LOVE listening to old music boxes, so if that doesn’t tell you how alike me and Marcy are, I don’t know what will!

I love both shows in different categories
Amphibia: I love this show for the good amount of comedic and reference moments. And not to mention the story plot is a good plus too. Sadly I found out how great this show is when the final episode aired. Man I can't help but remember the feelings I felt from the final episode.
The Owl House: I'll admit I got a bit bored from the first season, and didn't catch up to it yet, but I got back to this show when the first Episode of S2 came out, and I enjoyed, and stuck to it ever since. God this show is amazing. The horror moments, the comedy, and the plot twists are quite something. Not that many references as amphibia, but it's still so much fun to watch no matter how many times I watch the same episodes.
In the end, both shows are amazing, and are worth the watch for those that haven't seen these two yet. Same goes for Gravity falls since it is the beginning point of the whole "Story plot" timeline, same thing for S.V.T.O.E kind of confusing, but still good in the end (still bothered how it ended though). As for me, I'm on the debate to have a tattoo of these two shows to show my support anywhere I go
(Also I got to introduce The Owl House to a nurse that came to my reserve, and was interested that it has LGBTQ+ representation, and decided to see this when she has a chance. Can't help but feel proud about that moment)

(will always have a slight edge because amphibia helped during a bad time tho I enjoy toh more)
Toh does more interesting mature themes and things with its story then amphibia and I feel like the market has grown for young adult audiences to partake in watching animation and especially this. alongside it’s lgbtq rep.
Amphibia always stayed true to its goofy aspects even during serious moments, it balanced it out well in season 2, season 3 dropped the ball a little, and season 1 like every show, was just finding its audience.
Toh on the other hand, like s1 finding a audience, s2 bursted in popularity and strived truly to the end. Story wise, all the representation, even outside of lgbtq but with the disability eda had and her mature relationship themes with Raine.
Amphibia, tho dark at points, didn’t always have this which made it hit or miss some episodes, the owl house even if filler, had something worth while, so it jus out maximized amphibia in my opinion tho both shows are in my eyes generational!!!

I definitely prefer Amphibia over The Owl House. Not that The Owl House isn't good; far from it. However, everyone keeps praising The Owl House for its darker tone, but that only occurs in Season 2. Season 1 has a lot more filler episodes which feels kind of disconnected with the series going forward. Amphibia definitely has filler episodes, but the episodes are 11 minutes long as opposed to 22 minutes. This way even if it does feel like filler, it's relatively short to get through. Sometimes filler episodes have continuity in them so you can watch them back-to-back like Scavenger Hunt and The Plantars Check In. I think that's why I still really enjoy Steven Universe as they use the same 11-minute technique that Amphibia has. I just wish I knew what Dana Terrace's original intention for Season 3 was going to be because I know she wouldn't have just split up Luz, Eda and King like that.

Completely agree with all you said. I might add than in France, Disney Channel made a lot more advertisements for Amphibia than for The Owl House. Amphibia was also showed at major viewing times, while it looked like they were actually annoyed of showing TOH at all. For example, the current reruns are shown between 9 and 10pm... also when they posted the S3 on TH-cam, they did absolutely no announcement, so the episodes made around 3,000 views (to be compared with the millions the US versions did). I can also add that the French version of Amphibia is beyond perfect (it's hard to hear a difference with the English voices) but TOH's French version is really below regular Disney quality imo.
Personally, what appealed to me in TOH is the fact that the characters are human as you said. But also that there's a funny/punk adult since episode 1 (Eda) in which I, as an adult of the same age, I can relate to. On the other side, Hop Pop is the equivalent of an grumpy old man and I really couldn't stand him for all S1 -_-
Same for Luz, which is a nerd/otaku since episode 1, while Anne is shown as a more 'generic' girl. But at the same time, that's thanks to Anne that I started to watch Amphibia, because I *love* her voice. That's the only thing that appealed to me at first. I don't regret watching Amphibia at all however. It's also hard to recommend watching it to older kids/young adults because of its episodic nature where the story unrolls veeeery slowly while TOH drops the episodic from s1e15, which appeals more to fans of Japanese anime. It's worth noting that Disney & other producers do NOT like shows that are not episodic, especially for TV, because they just want content that can be shown to kids out of order any time of the day.

I'll tell you why i prefer The Owl House over Amphibia. Sure, Amphibia's got cool soundtrack and i like almost each and every theme from it, but i gotta say that The Owl House's score for sure has a masterful medieval flare to it, combined with a bit of techno, old-fashioned electro guitar, some chilling chimes, it almost in few times feels like movie score and at very least i have from it five favorite themes. the art style for humans is quite cute, but the art style for any human or demon is even cuter. A unique style of adorable drawings with some sweet, beautiful, seductive, sexy and atractive, apearances, blending with dark, gory, disturbing and unsetiling factor creating a swedish table of balancing the show's categorasation. In Amphibia, every frog, toad, newt, robot and any creature in Amphibia has cool designs, but it dosen't mean the demon people don't have them too. In Amphibia, i like that in there series there is an cool aspect of the three in any type; three girls, three gems, three races and three seasons, but only two foes, two worlds, one box and one story. In The Owl House, the lore with Titan being a skeleton with the whole kingdom city in his rib cage is kinda cool. It reminds me of the greek mythology of gods versus titans. Amphibia has undeniably great voice cast, but Alex Hirsch as The King of Demons, the reincarnation of Bill Cipher was spot on! The first show Amphibia is certified comedy, but unlike with Amphibia, i remembered few funny moments from season one to season two a before rewatching those clips. I guess i got so close to TOH that it's humor is more memorable then Amphibia. Amphibia is also quite epic, but in The Owl House, thw fifht scenes are amazingly coreographed with every used spell attack and spectacular smooth animations. And this show has a lot more smooth animated moments then any cartoon for kids before it. Can i even mention that for the first time in history of animation, a FLASH animation was used four times in four different moments in the show in a traditionaly animated cartoon like The Owl House? Seriously. Ain't the animators (maybe even Dana herself) trying too hard to impress us the watchers? Anne Bumchoi is for sure is cool, dashing, unique and funny girl and the number one reason i've got invested in watching her in her own cartoon, but i am simping more for The Owl House's main heroine, Lucinda Nuceda. She has those beautiful brown eyes, that lovely hair, that adorable nose, those cute pearsed ears, those graceful arms, those model legs, and such lovely lips. Oh my! Those lips! She is so hot and sweet that i just want to kiss her kisser. And unlike Anne that litereally has tree on her head, Luz can certainly take care of her look. She even gets herself a pair of longer pants for crying out loud! Her role as valiant and unaprecieated heroine chosed simply by fate itself is so sad, heartworming and relatable. There is something about her being Mexican. I know that spanidh is supposed to be romantic, but there is something about the Nucedas that i feel about thair culture. Luz has such wacky, flavorish, silly and sensational lines of dialog. I gotta tell everybody that i will never, ever think about word "lose" the same way ever again. Oh! And i love Amity Blight too. Individualy. Oh. And Hooty is a comedic genius. I love King Andre and Collector Boy equally. But i fell more bad for The Collector. Since he's just a young five year old lonely god abandoned by his ungreatful family who just wanted some fun company. Philip Wittebane is more impactful and better main antagonist then The Core. Someone even made review about why the collective minds are a wasted villainz. Phil might even be "The Most Sinister of Villains" or dare i say it "The Master of All Evil". For reallzies. Luz and Belos makes up for the black and white morality. Amphibia's grand finale was indeed grand. But i love the ending for The Owl House since unlike Anne, Luz dose gets an happy ending as she can travel from world to world to graduate into a second first human witch and eventually will marry Amykins. The Owl House is more similar to Steven Universe then Amphibia. Even Micheala Dietz is playing a cute and tame basilisk girl. And The Owl House is appearantly mocking and throwing a shadow at Disney. All though i wish i could have seen Luz sudying magic in Hexside and get the entire story of the Wittebane brothers and The Grand Huntsman. I am still satisfied and proud of that cartoon nontheless, and i want to thank Mrs. Terrace for introducing me to such whimsical, spooky, tear-inducing, enchanting, weird and fantasmic experiance of Amphibia's younger sister show.
Vee: "Who would want to watch a cartoon about a lot of people crying?"
Willow, Gus and Hunter: "Oh! We do! We do!"

I only watched the pilot episodes of both of them, and I will say The Owl House caught my attention more. I think what really feels nice about TOH is the fact that we actually see what Luz life was like before she went to the Owl House, and see how much she needs to be there and how much the other characters need her. It is nice to have people who celebrate what makes you different, kinda reminds me of why the movie High School Musical surpassed just being a Disney Channel movie. We like stories that makes us feel like we can escape our own life (HSM being a fun musical, TOH being a mystical land), but also we relate to and feel encouraged by the story (Troy wanting to break free from the limiting status quo of being just the basketball guy then meeting Gabriella, Luz being judged in her life, then her and the other characters being weird together). Amphibia does this sorta, but it wasn't as explicitly clear, the comedic/light hearted tone took over the message

Honest to God, in my opinion, if Dana Terrace wanted The Owl House to appeal to teens and young adults, she should’ve waited until 2023 to pitch the show, but to Adult Swim, because they are killing it with young adult animation. Examples are Unicorn Warriors Eternal and My Adventures with Superman.

    LGBTQ+ representation.
I remember that years ago the first time that I heard about TOH was about a video talking about Lumity and I didn't even knew about this characters nor the show. Then as the show kept moving on I was still getting recommendations about the show but almost all of them were Lumity moments or controversies about it even if I still hadn't check the show.

I've always talked about it with my friends that know about them that I think it's the overall charm that attracts certain people, I know some people who aren't interested in Amphibia because they didn't want a serious character to be Amphibian. By comparison of what they present in every episode, I felt like witches and magic is more of a familiar and comfortable area for the majority of people than Anne and Amphibian characters' adventures.
TL;DR The Owl House has a more familiar theme than Amphibia which helped a majority pull closer to see more if they know what they wanna see.

Also with Millenial/Gen Z’s growing cynicism around giant studios and corporations, Disney cancelling TOH may have counterintuitively brought more attention to it. Basically a flashing advertisement saying “hey, this giant, traditionally conservative and ‘play-it-safe’ conglomerate cancelled this show because it had themes they deemed disagreeable! You should check it out to see what the big deal is.”

While I do think the comparisons between TOH and Amphibia are kind of weird (I do get it to some extent. But overall, I find it kind of weird), because they are overall very different series (same w/ those series to Gravity Falls). Though, I do see these 3 series, sometimes attracting similar types of people and/or fans. Though, not always. Saying that, I personally prefer Amphibia and (imo) think it is the better show. I do love both shows though, and think both are great, awesome, amazing series, with great endings. I just overall, prefer Amphibia and think it is better and more well-written. TOH is still great though and really well-written!
I do wish Amphibia was more popular like Gravity Falls and TOH, but I kow there is still a lot of love and appreciation for Amphibia; just like those series (I find all 3 of these series eternally great/awesome!), and that is good enough for me. Saying that, hopefully one day, Amphibia wll get even more an audience; like it deserves. Because to me, it is just as great as TOH (and like I said, I do personally find it better and prefer it, even though I think both series's are really great), and imo, deserves just as much popularity as it and/or even more popularity. However, despite me wishing that, I know Amphibia already has a lot of love, fans, and support, and that is awesome.
I am happy, that for the most part, fans of Gravity Falls, TOH, and Amphibia usually are fans of all of them, and support and/or love for each of the shows/series, even if they do have preferences and/or favorites, for the most part don't put the other series's down that they don't like/prefer as much. I find that awesome! Let's keep showing our love and support for these great series, and keep the fandoms for each of them strong! And maybe one day, we might get more (better be great) content for these series, and if not, we always got great fan stuff. And hopefully there will be another series and/or more series's like (but still its own thing) these 3 series that can get GF, TOH, and/or Amphibia fans hooked to, like those series's did as well. :)

I love both shows, but what has attracted me to cartoons like them in the first place is the prospect of when we have the Gravity Falls style tonal shift into a more mature story. The Owl House gave more breadcrumbs for that sooner, though when I rewatched Amphibia I did find many of the breadcrumbs were more noticeable.

When I started watching The Owl House, I was immediately essentially sucked into it. It made me feel nostalgic, it had all kinds of right vibes, I was invested and so much more. I was immediately hooked from the very beginning to the very end.
Watching Amphibia was a very different process for me. I almost had to fight myself through actually finishing the first season as it didn't appeal to me that much and I only started getting really invested later on.
For me personally, I would say The Owl House was really good at drawing you in immediately and keeping you hooked. Amphibia meanwhile started out a bit slow and takes its time until it really hooks you and becomes amazing, probably surpassing The Owl House in the end.
Maybe other people had similar experiences, but stopped watching Amphibia as they didn't get invested enough in the show, while The Owl House grabs you in the beginning and makes you care about it very quickly.

Very nice analysis. Also I think there is yet another reason for this situation. The overall style of "Amphibia" is more cartoonish than that of "TOH", and this may give new viewers the impression that the frog show is something downright comedic and whimsical in contrast with the (slightly) darker tone of "TOH". Plus the first few episodes (or even most of the season one) of "Amphibia" looks like your standard episodic show, which doesn't help the cause.

One reason why I’m more into Amphibia more are the characters, while Luz, Eda, Amity Hunter and King are the best written characters in their show, I just preferred Anne, Marcy, the Plantars and Sasha more.
    - Their worlds are both unique but Amphibia’s world feels more “alive” than the Boiling Isles, with locations both beautiful and deadly.
And more so I felt more of the Emotional stingers in Amphibia’s True Colors than King’s Tide.
