A powerful and moving story, Giles and others involved with survivor groups in Scotland and across the rest of the UK have helped so many people to find a voice, and come to terms with what happened to them. Great work Giles, and Piers for bringing voice to this important subject :)
Stomach dropped, churning sick, and had to take deep breaths to get though listening to the premeditated evil of your first night at 6 years old 😢 May you long live in peace growing tomatoes and playing innocently where that little child couldn't. My gosh, so glad this is the healing times now, thank God!
Thank you Giles, and Piers. More and more I think that bullying is the core skill that these schools were established to teach - the skill that was needed to go out across the British empire and execute its agenda. So I don't think the fact that we were bullied by teachers and in turn bullied each other is incidental - I think it's at the heart of what these institutions were created for.
A 15 year old neighbour, committed suicide due to bullies . The teachers did nothing to stop him being bullied, perhaps because they themselves supported a bully culture in the staff room? How can I child complain about bullies to sociopathic teachers?
Thank you for sharing. What a sad story. And one that I have heard many times. I learned today that there are 2 people traumatised in bullying- the victim and the bully. I hadn't thought about that before.Take care, Piers 🙏
Just found out that Rick Stein is an ex boarder, too. I didn't have parents who asked me how I was after school as they would take the side of my teachers. But I only attended day schools and had my own bedroom, so each evening could go there after school to escape and process alone what went on at school or distract myself with music or a hobby. Hearing about being timetabled all the time at boarding school, even at weekends, reminded me of what I went through working away from home in the 00s. Straight from the railway station, or tube station if in London, on arriving and into a conference stewards' briefing or meeting. Then to a smoke filled pub for an hour or two and then to a restaurant for three hours, so not being allowed to check into the hotel until after 11pm. Unless I stole some time away earlier to check into the hotel. I became quite good at stealing time away. Otherwise, I would have had to be on the go continually. No wonder I had frequent, often severe and lengthy migraines then. We left restaurants before the dessert course was served as it was after 10 pm, and we were already full. Most of us crept away from a conference stewards' briefing otherwise we could have been there until between 6 and 7pm waiting to be taken in groups of 6 to be shown the stewards' mess as there was only room for 7 people in the lift. The rest of us could have been given directions to the stewards' mess and made our way up the stairs. But the conference organiser didn't think of that. She didn't care that we had to wait ages to be shown the stewards' mess, so some of us would have had to go straight from the briefing to the restaurant without checking into the hotel first. We disappeared at 5pm, made our way up the hill to check into the hotel, had an hour to relax or freshen up, and then came back down the hill to the restaurant.

Thanks for your comment. Giles' first night story is pretty horrific. Yes, it is good that things are changing. Take care, Piers 🙏

You can be both privileged, and a vulnerable child in care.
