    Massive respect for uploading a review after leisurely finishing the game. Games are supposed to experienced, not rushed like those official reviewers where they feel it like a chore and give bad scores.

      first comment and its a good "DAMM RIGHT" moment kinda wish more people would understand that and stop going "i want the review now" "hurry up with the review" and all that jazz, especilly since as you said the games end up feeling like a chore or miss all the good points and so they wind up getting low scores since due to rushing they didnt take the time to enjoy.
      this is especilly true around the soulsborne games for those telling joe to "hurry it up" and "we want it now" for elden ring, if they rush it they arent gonna enjoy it cause 1 the story is a slow burn as it takes time to figure it out (or use the wiki), 2 they dont experiment and find the weapon they may love (so dont test all the fun combat styles) instead use the starters and if they dont enjoy them well see above, 3 rushing doesnt leave time for fun, id rather wait weeks hell a month or 2 if needed so long as we get a fair review (though no doubt people will still complain if it aint 10 out of 10)

      @Jullia kosic ACG is a great example of someone who gets the review out on time and takes his time with great detailed reviews. Just because a review comes out when the game releases doesn't mean it was rushed. People get review codes and just play that game for a week as their job. AJ plays all of the games at once and doesn't make it his job.

      Same. I have learned to wait around a month after a game is launched before buying it.
      I remember being very hyped for Kingdom Come Deliverance when it was announced but when it launched, I waited a few days. Watched the reviews, a lot of them saying it was buggy as hell. So, I waited for them to patch it up and 3 months later, I bought a used version of it (cheaper) and got to experience the game without most of the bugs. It became my favourite game, and I'm sure it wouldn't have if I played it at launch because I would be pissed off with all of the bugs that plagued it at launch.

    My biggest problem with the story was that your objective at the beginning is to address the blight, but then Far Zenith comes and that is never really addressed. Gaia says that the stuff you’ve done will only give you a few months more, but Aloy is just like, “take your time!” at the end of the game like they aren’t heading towards mass deaths. Part of me hopes this will be addressed in a DLC, but it should have been addressed in the main game

      @Haegemon 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Guerrilla Games planed HZD as a trilogy once they had to cut stuff from the original. Forbidden West is a Chapter 2 more than a sequel.
      Gaia says after capturing Poseidon, Aether and Demeter only will give few months without Hephaestus which is the one who builds stuff and controls the cauldrons and the robots. Hephaestus is captured but after that it's released to fight the Zenits.

    • @jordanread5829
      @jordanread5829 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Forbidden West is the middle of the trilogy. The blight is addressed for now when you recover AETHER, DEMETER and POSEIDON. However to truly fix the biosphere in the long term, GAIA needs HEPHAESTUS. Unfortunately the Zeniths get HEPHAESTUS and in exchange of saving the Tenakth from a pointless death, Aloy tells Beta to release HEPH into the Zeniths network. HEPH then escapes back to the Cauldron Network when Gerald destroys their network. Because of this, Beta mentions in a datapoint that she, Sylens and GAIA are planning on using APOLLO (which they now have in full thanks to the Zeniths getting a copy 1k years prior) to build a better version of HEPH. Hoping that with this new version, GAIA can wrest control of the Cauldron network from HEPHAESTUS. Thus GAIA can use the cauldrons to take control and build new machines to fully repair the biosphere. Beta says (in the same datapoint) that this should be possible before NEMESIS arrives.

      The blight starts getting addressed when you heal the Land Gods and return them to the fields of crops that they used to tend to. If you come back later on, you'll notice a huge difference in how that same area looks.

    I love horizon. Since that first E3 video back in 2015, I got lost in the world of the first game and totally loved the story so the forbidden west was one of the handful of games I purchased in full price on a day of release and the first game I paid £70 for. I'm 120 hours in and still got stuff to do but you named some things I actually thought: Alloy's hair has life on its own. I was skipping doing main quests when I had less than 2 hours to play. I hated stupid hints. Like I'm collecting 9th drone and she goes maybe I need to bring it down. Yeah, I know Alloy shut up.... but I liked the story in the Forbidden west too but it didnt wow me ... and that's natural because it's a sequel ... Even if you didn't like any of the other tracks (soundtrack) in the game, try and listen to the one that plays when you start the New Game/Continue screen. It's a great twist on a similar track in HZD. Not dissimilar to how Ezio's Family became Assassin's Creed's theme, to the point where almost (if not every) AC game has it's own version of Ezio's Family. I think a lot of people miss the initial track in Forbidden West because after you press "Continue", you don't get to hear it in its' entirety. Just to be clear the name of the Track is "Aloy's Theme - Forbidden West (feat. Julie Elven)".

    I think when it comes to the dialogue, everything just depends on how invested you are in the world. I really love the first game and I've been invested in the world since then. I really enjoyed everything about the tribes, their interactions, and the various side quests that you encounter. The dialogue itself was very enjoyable to me because I found most of that stuff to be very interesting. That being said, if you're not interested in those things I can see how the dialogue would be annoying. Still, as much as I enjoy the first game, I feel like this one was an improvement on all levels. If you're not interested in the dialogue, it's easy enough to skip through it.

And then Other Joe criticized that there was a dialogue wheel instead of cutscenes. Umm.. the dialogue wheel is for people like you who DON'T care. Literally just pick the bottom left option and then you can press a button to skip the dialogue entirely if you want. Why would you insist on picking every dialogue wheel option for 50 hours if you haven't cared the whole time?

    I did enjoy the various tribes, both in FW and the original ZD. Seeing how each differed and were culturally and visually unique as well as how they explained how those differences came about from the few bits of lore found in he open world.
    But FW fell a little short compared to the original ZD. in ZD we had the Nora, and Oseram and Carja and Banuk, and really got time to experience and get a feel for how they were all different. IN FW we basically have the Utaru and the Tenakth, with the quen only showing up at the end of the game with their only really noticeable features being (we use focuses abut we suppress sharing any learning), and the Zenith who we barely see at all other than two characters we talk with.
    The tenakth could have been really diverse and almost three separate tribes themselves, but the only really differences we se is one lives in the mountains and another lives in the desert and anther lives in the woods, and we use different color skin paint.

    Cons would be traversal, some machines and quest design.
    Don’t know how many times aloy won’t grab on to ledges she would be able too that are shorter than arms reach of her, so many yellows spots for her to grab on but she won’t and this happens constantly. Buttons aren’t that responsive when it comes to climbing and it feels slower in my opinion. Dropping down to certain surfaces in certain areas is hit or miss. She’ll tell you drop now, you drop, and she will miss whatever it is, fall and die. Happens multiple times. Free parkour also messes me up because she will also just miss platforms she has to walk on.
    Some machines cover way too much ground that you can’t run away, sure they are suppose to be fast but if I feel like I’m getting my cheeks clapped, I wanna be able to run away. Can’t because some have some bs attacks with ridiculous hit detection, do certain moves where you can’t attack and when they knock you down good luck getting up fast enough to get to safety. I like a challenge and the game is challenging at times but there are too many moves you can’t dodge because of the size of some of these machines. Some don’t even have enough weak spots for you to do enough damage, you shot them off and now you’re left with just armor and you’re only doing 9 damage until it dies. That might be a nit pick
    But quests… I hate the “search” something, someone or a way in quests. They will give you a wide area to search and your way in for example is perfectly blended in with the environment so you’re not sure what you are looking for. There are so many videos on TH-cam on some of these quests because they are frustrating. If the game “forces” the player base to look up the answers and ways in to certain areas then there is a flaw in the quest design. Some quests are bugged, the game won’t always tell you exactly what to do. You have to look at an area a specific way for her to say a dialog to update the quest (best way to explain without spoiling that mission)

      I think one of the problem with these vast open world games is that you meet way too many characters, but each character only has a limited amount of "screen time". So, you don't get to have a relationship with them. They either don't develop as a character or their character development is way too fast.
      That's why I think having the companions is a step in the right direction, but then they went and kept them all in the base. Should've allowed us to take one of them with us and have them commenting on stuff, like in Fallout 4. Or have a decent chunk of companion sidequest. Or at least have them follow us through the main quest and actually be of essential help (maybe they have abilities that Aloy doesn't to be used in the main quest storyline) instead of just loitering around in the base.

    Aloy was a decent character in the first game, being the awkward loner exploring a strange new world.
    Unfortunately, it doesn't work well in this game. The friends she made in the first game are eager to help her in this one, but she treats all of them like they're some great inconvenient burden. She's not the only one who's capable of fighting against machines and enemy tribes, however she is the only person with special DNA that lets her access and turn on certain ancient machinery, so all of them know that if she dies, they are all screwed. She should be willing to let everybody help at every opportunity not just for the sake of preserving her own life but because she knows how important her life is for the rest of the planet.
    And then it's annoying how just everybody she meets likes her right off the bat even when she barely shows any respect. I'm still annoyed at the part where she blows up the fortress wall while there are guards standing on it and the people in town are just okay with it. That would have been like Aragorn blowing up Helm's Deep and then the Rohirim hail him as a hero while Theoden as a coward.

    • @AvatarSane234
      @AvatarSane234 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Disagree. The developers have thought of everything, and here's why.
      Aloy's grew up an outcast and was deprived of communication with her peers, Rost raised her in such a way that she is well prepared and stubborn, always goes to her goal, no matter how impossible it may be. At the same time, frequent loneliness made her kind and sensitive to everyone who was in trouble. Aloy does not consider religious people stupid and although she understands that the real state of things is very different from their picture of the world, one must act carefully in this regard and explain everything as clearly as possible if the situation requires it.
      In the Forbidden West, these aspects of it are being developed. The girl just rushes from one goal to another without even saying goodbye to her friends and believes that only she alone is able to fix everything. And when she gets into trouble and almost dies, her friends are nearby and intelligibly explain to Aloy that although she is a strong girl, she is not all-powerful. That you can’t take on such a big burden, but you need to rely more often on those who love you and work on a common cause together. Therefore, now they will never leave her behind and will help to the end. And Aloy in the start who literally wakes up alone is not the same person at the end of the game when she is act with her friends. The game literally says: "If you want to go fast - go alone. If you want to go far - go together."

    • @sawdust8691

      I kind of agree.
      Aloy was not as likable in this game.
      That may just be her intended character, but it was just hard to like her as a protagonist when she could be so very arrogant even in situations she shouldn't be.
      I get the vibe that the writers wanted to show "strong powerful protagonist," even at times when it doesn't work. Like arrogantly threatening 7 armed soldiers all by herself.
      You look past that stuff in gameplay, but it doesn't really work in a scripted scene. It just comes off as dumb.
      I don't know, it's generally fine, and it's a good game and story.
      But after I played the DLC, it just sank in that the game is a bit meh. Something I didn't really notice until I came back later for DLC.

      And also the analogy of how we likely misinterpret our own forebearers.
      Its great. Aloy herself is... Quite an unlikeable douche I think, but her personality isn't that different to my own so.. Its funny in that way.
      She's antisocial and isn't interested in people so much, which is OK, but she doesn't have to be so condescending to everyone, that is overly douchey imo.
      ... But also understandable actually given how she's used to having so much more knowledge than everyone else.
      ... And then I do really like how they've got a little 'UN' thing going on with each Tribe represented gaining knowledge to take back and educate the masses... There's so much potential, and I buy into the world and story.

    My biggest theory as to why this games plot seems so bleh and uninteresting is its contrivance. I was sadly able to predict what was going to happen long before it even came up, and not just major plot points, but even the beat for beat rhythm at times. It made dialog and interacting with people that much more frustrating, because you already know what's coming and you're just asking yourself, "OK, so when to we get there?" And you keep rolling through that dialog hoping to catch a glimpse of the magic of the first game. In zero dawn you had mysteries and discoveries to carry you through the more generic moments. You were an agent acting in a world beyond your scope, and interactions with people were just you(the random variable) being weighted into what was otherwise the other persons motivations. Here, the game turns you into the constant. The world cannot exist without you in it, and the game constantly must remind you of it. Every characters motivations are centered around when and if aloy will come to their aid. It gets to a point where the contrivance, self-importance, and foreshadowing become arrogant and annoying. Even when there's a definitive and decent back plot to step outside of aloy's scope, the writing MUST bring it right back around to her. If zero dawn was a game of mystery and discovery, this game is cataloging and record keeping. I'd love to do a tear down video on the games story someday. Really good gameplay though!
    TL;DR: Someone either focus tested too hard, or someone in charge of the money really crippled this games story.

      True, so much so the devs for HFW tried to dunk on Elden Ring 🤣

    Overhyped? I don’t know about that, You have to remember that game came out 5 years ago. In 2017 standards back then it was pretty good. It’s kinda like playing Metal gear solid one and metal gear solid 2. Games came out 3 years apart and there was a MASSIVE difference. That’s simply evolution and glad to see guerrilla games is moving forward not backwards.

      agreed, and first one had the story stuff very well done

      This game is definitely overhyped, I’m at the last mission of the game and the story hasn’t blew me away. The strength is absolutely in the combat as the story and it’s characters are extremely forgettable. Guerrilla games had a chance to do something different and innovative with this game, but they played it too safe.

      @@blitzofwar5435 Again arm chair quarterbacking. Also it’s entirely subjective. Just because you don’t care for the story doesn’t mean others don’t. And as the various millions upon millions of units sold and tons of awards and praise it received I think you’re definitely in the minority. Although I agree the gameplay is definitely the strong suit. Just like BOTW that released around the same time. Because that games narrative definitely isn’t “Innovative”

    I think it had great combat music, especially for the big machines.

    Just had an idea. How about nemesis and Ted faro join in some way and faro can be the character that represents nemesis in the 3rd game
    I think that could be an awesome way to give nemesis an actually character to fight instead of just a faceless AI
