If you don’t plan on wearing this set, save the pieces for when you get thread so you can practice on the fabric before you try to actually sew something 😉
I think you did well considering that you had to pivot from your original plan. Next time I would glue the skirt and make a “tube” for your elastic, then just thread the elastic in. That way the Elastic and stretch as freely as it needs to and it helps the skirt look more uniform. But honestly girl, good job ^.^
I thought of this too but had she done that, the skirt would’ve ended up being even shorter so maybe that’s why she didn’t do it that way, she was already struggling with the length of it 😅
@@IndigoG33 Yeah it would definitely be neater that way 🤩 But honestly hers looked so cute from behind as well in the video so she did good regardless 😍
When you’re running elastic through a waistband, it’s a lot easier to make your channel (a little wider than the elastic), but leave the ends where the channel meets open. Then, take your elastic, attach a large safety pin to one end, and work it through the channel. Once you reach the end, you can attach the ends of the elastic and close the channel. This works for drawstrings, too, and lets you adjust how and where the fabric gathers. I hope that makes sense!
I just wanted to say that I struggle a lot with body dysmorphia and body image in general, and you’re one of the only people who makes me feel better and reminds me that no matter what I see in the mirror I deserve to be happy and have a good day. Seriously thank you so much. I have been watching you for years. Sending much love and good vibes. ❤️❤️
I was going to comment something very similar. I also have body dysmorphia and its hard to find people who make you feel good or better about yourself. Carrie really is one of those people who shines a bright light
Tip: When using elastic you stretch it as you sew/glue it on. When it returns to its normal shape it will bunch the fabric together. You don't bunch the fabric then attach the elastic because the fabric won't un-bunch if it's sewn/glued down like that. You also want the elastic to be a little smaller than your measurements when it's unstretched so that it stretches slightly when you put it on, giving you a nice fit. Hope that makes sense. ^.^
Would totally recommend getting a fabric roller cutter if you start doing more DIYs, it's an absolute game-changer for getting even hems compared to scissors and makes it way faster too.
When you buy thread, I suggest you also get some pins & extra sewing machine needles. When you’re learning you tend to break them by going over thicker seams in a newbie gung-ho fashion (I certainly did!) 😂🥴😂
Honestly with an oversized denim jacket that would be totally wearable! You could even throw on some bike shorts with like a lace detail or something under the skirt to make it more comfortable! Had so much fun watching this. I need to work up the courage to thrift flip 😂
Great job Carrie! I would recommend investing in a set of pins so that you can pin the hem all the way around before you start to stitch (or liquid stitch lol) it. That way you can make sure that it's nice and even all the way around. Also steaming/ironing the hem before you stitch it will help make sure it's nice and crisp!
Instead of "losing" the bottom of the skirt because of the curve, you could have flipped the skirt upside down and then the curve part would be at the top and you could have used the curve as a "pouch" to feed the elastic through. (then you could have done a tiny hem at the bottom).
That turned out so cute!! You should go back in and sew the seems once you get some thread! I think the elastic band will be easier with sewing: you pin the center front, back, side, and other side to your elastic, (four points), to the same spots on your skirt and then stretch the elastic to fit the skirt as you sew. Then it scrunches when you are done and has an even gather!
When you crop something, fold it in half so that the front is on one side and the back is on the other, if that makes sense. That way, if you don’t cut it very straight, it will have a longer back or a longer front, but it won’t be lopsided.
Take an online beginner how to use a sewing machine class first for sure!! :) There are SO many tips, on picking the correct needle, to winding a bobbin, and threading your machine correctly, that usually aren't in the machine manual and they're easy to get incorrect! Cute first project though for what you had :)
I'm going to give you advice you probably won't like, but when you start sewing, you need to iron. I only iron when I sew. I hate ironing. But it's super important to get the fabric to lay flat and go together and if you iron before/while sewing, the garment will look better and you can avoid ironing it later. Even with these hems.... I would have recommended ironing down the hems before gluing. Please know that I say this with love and support! Not criticisms. I think that it turned out pretty well, all things considered!!!
I think it would be really cool if you tried following a sewing tutorial. Coolirpa, Annika Victoria, withwendy all are amazing TH-camrs who do detailed thrift flip/ sewing tutorials that are really insightful. Sewing takes time and patience but finishing a project is rewarding.
OMG Carrie!! This looks really good! I was expecting something going really bad (like the candle twisting 😂😂) but this turned out really good!! YAYYYY!
I would be very impressed with myself if I pulled this off. The finished product looked really cute on you. I relate so much to you. I don't have the patience to put the time and effort into the process of crafts. I lose interest so quickly! So I def give you props for this!
Are you going to get some lessons from someone on how to use your sewing machine? I really think you will like the process more if you know how to do things the correct way.
This is so cute, what a great way to update an item for 2021! I definitely will be trying. Heat n bond hem tape is a great alternative for the glue. I personally prefer it and find it way easier to use
Umm I love it! From up close I'm sure its kind of wonky but its super cute and I love the color. P.S. could you do a try on video of high waisted jean shorts?!
Seriously you did that! No sewing experience or “tutorial”??? I am impressed! Sewing is no joke and is actually super hard. I have been doing it since I was a kid and still screw up all the damn time. Mostly because I have no patience at all and I just want to be done so I try and cut corners...sewing pun. 🤣 Sewing is kind of like baking where you need to be pretty precise and who has time for that? Oh. People with an attention span you say? Well damn. Either way you rocked it and it looked adorable on you too! 💕
Ah Carrie it's so cute for using fabric glue!! Also a common term used in the sewing space right now is "sewist" instead of "seamstress" since it's more gender neutral. Some people hate the term sewist but I personally use it. 😊
From far its cute! I'm sure it's been mentioned but next time make a tube on the top of skirt using the glue first. Leave an opening and using a safety pin put the elastic through, then glue the elastic to itself. Hope this makes sense. I think it would have been less tedious for you. Overall I think you did a great job, especially for your first time.❤
It turned out so cute! Sewing will probably make it easier. If you wanted to you could find fabric to add to the bottom of the skirt to make it straight, you know print clashing. But it looks good just the way it is.
I think this turned out fantastic!! I make a lot of sewing videos, and honestly i"m always forgetting to buy something for the projects😂and i totally get the "over it" felling! i just made a dress and i wanted to chuck my sewing machine out the window!! haha
This looks really awesome 😍 and anything like this is learning through the process. There's some excellent tips here in the comments too 😊 what a talented little community we have here ❤️
You did a fantastic job. I can't sew to save my life. I'm a "glue Gun" type of crafter, lol...The hubby is the sewer in the family....My 61 yr old osteoarthritic knees were screaming when seeing you sit cross-legged for sooooo long, lol...
If you try this thrift flip again, maybe try, on the skirt part, fold over the seem for the waist first but leave a gap and not go all the way round. Then thread the elastic through then close the gap up.
Can't see that anyone else said this, but for ease of 'hemming' if fabric availability is an issue, gluing/sewing matching bias binding or ribbon along the hemming can give a nice finished look & hide wonky cutting
My work just changed our dress code from casual (jeans/tees) to business casual (khakis, dress pants, blouses). I need some advice on some dress pants that fit 14/16 petite!! If you don’t plan on wearing this set, save the pieces for when you get thread so you can practice on the fabric before you try to actually sew something 😉
Okay, but gluing the space between buttons on tops like this is genius. This journey was worth it just for that hack.
I always hand-Sew up my button down stuff 😂
@@kingcrimson1204 that's a great idea too. I literally never thought of it.
@@marycorreia4359 same!!!! my mind is blown

These are usually called rotary cutters, if anyone is having trouble figuring out what to look up!
@@xbluebirdsky thank you, I couldn't remember the name, and was like "eh close enough" 😂

I love that you forgot the thread. Lol I totally relate. It looks perfectly fine.
My dad was infamous for “repairing” clothes with staples - this feels familiar : )
Also, glueing on your carpet!!!!!
