Backcountry Burbot | Ep. 2 | Fur Hat Ice Tour

  • To pivot off of the ease and accessibility we featured in episode 1, episode 2 goes the opposite direction and shows Cal and Miles embarking on a deep backcountry winter expedition requiring tracked Can-Ams and thousands of pounds of gear. Ice fishing can be simple and local, but it can also be adventurous. Cal and Miles explore a high mountain Montana lake that Cal’s been wanting to fish for two decades, in the hopes of catching a large, or at least respectable, burbot. Cal and Miles discover less than optimal conditions, but work through and figure it out. They manage to catch a variety of fish, cook some delicious burbot, and try out fried burbot liver. #fueledbynature #MeatEater

Born and raised in MN. Stared down that ice hole for many hours as a kid. Lived here in North Idaho for nearly thee decades now. Burbot seem to be a big deal on the Kootenai River in Boundary County. Never knew they were the exact fish called an eelpout on Mille Lacs lake in Minnesota. Learn something new everyday. You might check out the Eelpout festival on Mille Lacs. Apparently, it's a big deal.
Keep it up guys. Never figured I'd find myself watching other folks ice fish after a childhood of ice fishing. No regrets!

Love the new online content like this. That can-am would have been fine though, that is what it's made for. Can't imagine spending $30k on that just to leave it onshore. Should have taken snowmobiles if you were that concerned about it. I'm sure you'll get it dialed next time though...
Also, try chumming the holes next time for cusk, especially on a multi day trip like that. Anything smelly may work, I like cans of cat food personally. They also bite best at night. Not sure what the regs are in MT, but here we're allowed to set special cusk rigs during the night. No live bait or tip ups allowed, as this would be too effective on lake trout, so pretty much cut bait or dead minnow on the bottom tied to a spruce bow. Wake-up and pull up your breakfast.
