Yeah, for a youtube video its pretty great content, but their show is much more produced and polished. As someone who has edited hundreds of hours worth of videos I can tell that just putting this together was tough. Like Con John said, a lot of the footage starts to fog up once they get inside those shacks, and that's where most people were most of the time, so it makes sense that most of the footage was fogged up.
I love the show but I think I prefer these youtube episodes. They are more relatable and i'd even like to see more B roll. I would 100% watch a 45 minute to an hour video that had a lot of like "behind the scenes" stuff kinda like how the Hunting Public shoot their stuff.
With all the new meat eater shows i'm worried Steve is starting his exit strategy while keeping the meat eater brand and show concept alive. Poor guy probably wants to get back to hunting for himself. But Steve makes the show, i'm sorry to say. I could watch/listen to Steve talk about hunting or do Experts React videos every single day, i couldn't say that about anyone else on any of the shows apart from maybe Callen. He's knowledgeable, funny, and good in front of the camera.
@@NoseNuggets You hit the nail on the head. I love what the others are doing too, but Meateater episodes with Steven just hit different. I've listened to all his appearances on Rogan, and I hardly listen to the podcast except for some TH-cam clips, but when Steven's on, I make sure to go listen to the whole thing on Spotify. It'll be a bummer if he leaves.
My daughter waited on Steve at a restaurant in SW Montana a couple nights ago. They briefly talked wildlife biology, hunting and was polite enough to look at some of her pictures. He left a generous tip. By her account he is a righteous humble man with a beautiful family.
Bro Steve is one of a kind. After the passing of ken block we have to show how much we love and how much Steve means to us. Steven thank you for all the knowledge and inspiration you have given us.
This series is money! Would love to see Jay describing how he filets the different types of fish on the next one. What an awesome trip, and pretty cool of meat eater's own Mr.Rinella to be a part of this. Great duo right here
Fished devils lake a few times for walleye in the fall. Wildest place I’ve ever been, old farm equipment half in half out of the water and old farms flooded all over the lake. Beautiful place!
Jay, 4 or 5 years ago. I would've been pumped to see this video. Because it's "the Steve rinella" fishing with some guy for jumbos. Now, after watching you, your channel, and your family grow these past few years. I'm proud to say how pumped I am that "the jay Siemens" is fishing with some guy named Steve. Hopefully what I'm saying makes sense, your the GOAT brother! I know your sick of hearing it but I hope Aaron is okay. Itd be unreal to see you, A.W. and Steve all in the same video. Hopefully it can happen! Tight lines everyone!
All the new presenters they’ve brought on to the Meat Eater brand are great, but there is a reason Steve is so successful and has grown the brand the way he has. He is such a great presence and has great delivery and makes episodes he is on all the better.
Yes! Hope we are back on the hunting fishing videos. The true meat eater lifestyle. I enjoy these last few more cooking episodes but nothing beats a good ole Steve fishing video
Great episode! I know you guys had a lot of troubles on this trip and you did not think it would be a good full episode of Meat Eater but I think it was great and would of thought that it was a great episode. You guys certainly know better and are the experts though. Either way glad you released it. Looking forward to getting out in the ice soon myself
This is episode that Steve banned from the Meateater 11 series and gave Chester living hell about it. To be fair, I can only imagine filming in such brutal conditions, so Chester the Tester gets the hall pass. Please keep the Canadian Angle going. Jay is a great host and has such a positive vibe and a love for all things swimming beneath those icy waters.
So glad you guys put in the time to produce this episode. It easily could have been a full on meateater episode, but this was great. An exact representation of a weekend of ice fishing
Did some spearing in Northern MN as a teen in the 80's. We made our own lures by carving chunks of basswood, burning lines on the sides with hot metal from the wood stove, and pouring molten lead into a hollowed out cavity in the belly to keep them balanced. We used spears that my buddy's dad had made many years previous. Good fun out on Big Detroit Lake. Not sure we got many fish, but I know there were a few meals of Northern Pike on the table to show for the hard work.
Its a little surreal to have been watching Jay and others develop on youtube, and then things like this happen. Great show. So much admiration for both of these guys. And seeing Cal in there, Chester... I really like the feel of these more 'rough around the edges' videos. Keep doing this, keep the feeling real, or reel. However you want to say it. :D
The key to eating whitebass is you only keep the meat above the lateral line...its a clean white loin that fries up great.. the lower portion of the fillet is muddy
I like how a couple months ago Steve releases a video about the new season of the main Meat Eater show where he spends a significant amount of time bitching about this cold ass trip to ND that they ended up not being able to make a coherent episode out of the footage because everything froze, or was fogged, or whatever. Meanwhile Jay is going “Sweet, I’m gonna make my first episode all about that awesome trip to North Dakota!”
Let Jay plan and direct the next "Meat Eater" TV Episode on Lake of the Woods instead of down south. It would be great to see them up in Canada fishing.
I'm glad you pulled this one out Jay! It was very entertaining. I've been on many trips that looked like they were that cold. You guys did well considering the conditions! Any trip that ends in a fish fry is successful in my book! Keep at it man, love your stuff.
So glad they let jay run this for the Canadian angle.. I don’t get why it didn’t make the cut for the main show. Jay is so good though so I’m glad the story was told through his lens.
Love stever. Watched all his videos. Class act and his crew. Always well put together and real. Not all the drama so many have. Would love to see more with stever in it but do understand he has a lot on his plate. Cal and all the rest of the staff are heads above most videos . Thanks for all you guys do for educating and do to improve wildlife. Environment . Extra extra. So crucial to have your fight for people who get it and the future. Be well and
Man, our fishing season ended October 1st, and god damn I can’t wait for January 1st to start Ice Fishing for Walleye, perch, crappie, and smelts. Those Eskimo Ice tents are awesome. I have two of them (bought the cheapest version to try one, then upgraded to their top model) and my best friend and I have been using them for three years now. We used to build real wooden ice shacks until I tried these.
Great video. Tip on the white bass.. bleed them in ice and leave over night . Then clean them. Trim the redmeat out along the spine. Makes a huge difference.
Anyone else notice at the 7 min mark. Everyone is fully dressed and covered up. Jay is standing there without his coat and gloves. You can tell who the Canadian is. Lol
Two of my favorite guys to watch in the outdoors in one great episode. Pretty fun to watch Steve ready to keep all the fish because he love to eat good meat, compared to Jay loves the game of catching fish, very interesting dynamic for sure.
Great episode. If you ever find yourselves with a mess of white bass, cook up some Hungarian fish stew called "halaszle". It's a tomato based stew with loads of paprika and it is amazing. Works great for any "rough" or "fishy" fish.
Great episode. Something here in Australia we can never do is ice fish. Better add that to my bucket list. Which is getting longer, guess I need to live to 110. 🤣
Great video guys. Thanks for the reminder that bass suck for eating. Tried one a few years back. Just took one to try it because I fished for them as a kid and maybe ate one in quite a few years fishing as a kid. They taste just as I remember.
I did a guided trip up there two years back and my guide laughed at the guys hole hopping. They follow contour on much of the lake like walleyes. Find it, drill and sit your ass still and watch them come through every 15 to 30 minutes. Also, fun fact, their is no natural baitfish in Devil's Lake. Freshwater shrimp is the forage.
We're back on the ice!!!!
Heyyyooo
What happened to 39 hours?? 😢
@@ChooseFreshAtSubway that’s uncut angling and I think Arron is having a rough year haven’t seen him post once
@@ChooseFreshAtSubway they did something similar! Called game of inches was very good!
The ice bite is hot in CO!
So this is the trip that “wasn’t good enough” to be an episode of Meateater. It seemed pretty damn good to me!!
The footage is pretty foggy most of the video. Wouldn’t be up to meat eaters video standards. Content was good though!

Steve and Jay together. Classic!

Glad you salvaged this! Turned out pretty good considering the conditions, nice work!
Nothing not to love about this episode! Should include it with the full season 11!

@TextNow890 this scam is played out my man. Come up with something new.
I've seen all of Steven Rinella's Meat Eater series multiple times. Big fan! The channel is kind of modeled after his series. Awesome episode!
Been waiting a long time to see this footage. Two legends meet to ice fish. Awesome video Jay.

That fried fish at the end got me hungry. The coating mix looked awesome and I have to try it.
