Haha I can't find the lab coat! It got lost when I moved the studio. The bike will be paused for a week because I have the Polygon being delivered today!

Man, the FSRs were my dream bike when I bought my M2 Stumpjumper Comp way back in 99. Upgrading that old beauty was how I found Wolftick and your channel. Enjoy playing with one and would have loved to have the money and room to buy one of those for old time sake. My Stumpy is now used for family rides and bought a pricey FS bike earlier this year.
I have a ‘99 stumpy I love it and it surprisingly has not died yet I love bikes from back then and I really want to make it a modern bike, imagine…

$3600 for a brand new high end bike seems like a steal today. Now if you want your frame to say “S-Works”, you’re looking at $9k+

I found an FSR XC in the middle of the road. When I went to check it out, I noticed that the wheels were deflated. My guess is one of the local junk collectors who scavenges for metal found it by the side of the road and decided to grab it to junk it for scrap. I was just fortunate that it, probably, bounced out of his truck as he was headed down our road and I was there to grab it. I'm not sure how much it was originally worth. However, if it's even 1/3rd of the new price of your bike, that's impressive by itself.
Nice bike and video! I have a 1999 Specialized FSR Sport that I bought for $250. The previous owner had it serviced by the local bike shop and replaced the tires with inner tubes just before I bought it. The original Manitou Spyder forks and Fox Vanilla shock is in good condition. I replaced the handlebars with PNW GEN 3 Range bars and a 50 mm stem with 30 degree rise. I love the Deore V brakes due to the stopping power. They can almost launch you over the handlebars when making sudden stops. I love the old school bikes and it rides smoother than any bike I have ever owned. I am planning to replace the front fork with a Rock Shocks Recon and a ExaForm 588 rear shock when the originals blow out.
I would really love to do a project like this for myself, ever since I services my suspension for the first time, I've been craving to do it again, it's just so fun.
Used to see so many of these bikes kicking around. Would love to find a gem like this for sale.

How have I only just found this channel?! You might like mine - I've restored several old S-Works too, among many others in my rather silly collection. I had the hardtail version of this: the 2002 M5 HT. Killed it after 15 years and got a new Epic with the lifetime warranty.
Wow got a new one after 15 years with a warranty claim! I'll definitely check your channel out! I feel like the algorithm sucks right now and doesn't recommend small channels like ours, but will instead recommend stuff I've already watched from bigger channels. No clue why.

Excited for this restoration! Hopefully that fork works after all that work! If not hopefully you can score a great 26” used replacement from your usual sources or a saga squad member that is slightly newer and helps with disc brake conversion but keeps the white/gold look of original. Someone has to have one collecting dust for this classic build. Always love the content and unique style of your vids
A friend of mine has a 2001 version w/ full XTR and Fox suspension. He swapped it to a 1x setup and still prefers it over his new Polygon
Oh nice that's good to hear. I plan on modernizing it for sure. The hardest part will be going to disc brakes and keeping the Mavic wheels. Also finding 26" straight steer tube forks is hard!
Not too hard, get a custom built fork, or you coul build one up from scratch. My brother has a 1 inch threaded steerer, I plan on getting a dh fork for him, and use two top crowns to secure a 1 inch threadless steerer for him to use. Might by structurally weak, but it should hold. Good luck on the build, and keep up the videos.

@@EvansMTBSaga If you absolutely want to upgrade the fork find a old 27.5 staight steer 100mm reba. It'll slacken it a bit but not too much. That said i would not fully modernize that bike and just do little upgrades like i mentioned in another post. If you ride it too hard it'll break everywhere starting by the pivot anyway. For today standard you should keep it for light trail riding, leisure riding, no real jump etc...
Really liked this video. It's pretty amazing just how far Mtb have come. Also that's still a great bike even after all those years, can't wait to see when it's all finished.

And that shock defienitly looked like it had seen better days, impressive how you fix up disgusting old stuff and get them looking like new. Btw that the shock was so hard to thread on was probably due to the rebound, slower rebound makes it easier to thread on. I think so at least...

Just found your channel and am stoked because I am still rocking a 2002 stumpjumper and need to service the front and rear suspension badly. I have ordered all of the service parts already but was immediately intimidated by the "special tool" you need and the general lack of information on the internet for these forks. This video was a lifesaver, and gave me a great weekend project. Great video, you're going to love the bike!
I have a 99 Stumpjumper FSR XC that I touch up painted and kept the Mantou elastomer fork, still worked. But I did replace the Vanilla Air rear shock, wider bar, shorter stem, dropped the 3x for a 1x drivetrain and added a dropper. I kept all the parts, in case I wanted to restore it. I still ride it and she keeps up with the new bikes just fine.

I have a 2009 stumpjumper elite fsr, the fox 32 talas rl forks on that are adustable on the go from a dial on top of the fork, between 100 120 and 140 mill, shame we dont see this technology on modern day bikes, especially downhills, it would make so much sense.

That frame is very similar to the late 90's Intense tracer, I have a Haro build by Intense from 1999 or 2000.. still rocking fox float.

I think you'll find a, that's a 2001 mode ( top of the range in 2002 was the new shape enduro expert retail at £1600) and b, pace used Titanium nitrile stanchions in the late 90s on the rc36s. Those fox sid races are made waaay later than the frame ( early models were a pale blue), I think they're around 2004 or 6, definitely not the original fork for the frame
That was a seriously high spec bike back then! Those XTR V brakes were silly money and when used with the ceramic rims were genuinely strong brakes.
Yeah the Mavic rims are ceramic! I remember a kid at the BMX track had those XTR brakes. Can't wait to put new pads on them and try them out

I still own one i bought in 2003 on the cheap thank to the new "epic". The FSR is a much smarter buy because it has no trikcy brain problems anyway. I obviously don't ride it as my main bike anymore but it's nice to have it when friends or family come home and go for a little ride. I raced roc d'azur and transvesubienne with it back in the days. If i could rebuy it today i would go for a frame as large as possible (thankfully i took a M back then and not the S dumb people told me to buy). Because these are very short in length by modern day standards. Larger frame allows shorter stem which make them more manageable on the trail. A wider bar is a welcome addition without going full modern wide. Chunkier front tire (2.4) up the handling too. I kept the V brake too because going disc would mean discarding the nice mavic crossmax wheelset, the nice XTR lever, and cool XTR V Brake. V brakes are not fantastic but they definitely will stop you if needed. It keeps the bike somehow period correct too and these are easy to maintain on a bike that don't ride often. A 1X update is doable without too much modifications and would bring chain safety, more reliability.
I see you didn't service the shock damper that requires specific tools and high pressure nitrogen. A simple dropper post would make the ride more enjoyable but you'll have to find a short one because usually not much shaft is exposed.
Beware to avoid hitting the shock if you lower the seat while riding. Also it'll scratch the nice thomson elite seatpost.
Thats sick! I just came across a 2006 stumpyjumper fsr expert that someone was throwing out and im gonna fix it up and get my gf riding with me!
Unfortunately the rear shock on it is broken to all hell so no point servicing it and theres a few broken spokes at the rear wheel so ill have to rebuild it but fuck it i got a project for the winter!
Great Bike! I would modernize it slightly. Hydraulic disc brakes, an angle set from work components, maybe a dropper post.. Do you have an idea for the repain? Sorry, repaint.. ^^

All that Rockshox is offering them now is 30 or 40mm in the new Rudy Shox.
That's wild! I'm finally assembling the bike and the fork has only 63mm of travel. Pretty disappointing and wouldn't stand a chance to my local XC trails. Definitely getting replaced
@@EvansMTBSaga If you increase the front, you need to increase the back also a bit. I have the same bike (sans the S-Logo) and it is awesome for the price (got it in mint condition on eBay for EUR 85,-). Oh, I have 100mm front and back. :D
BTW, $3,600 in 2002 is $5,363 in 2021 factoring in inflation.
Interestingly, the current top line S Works XC bike is priced at $10,020.

I bought one two years ago, and I was too excited to notice its glaring faults. The rear skewer ate its way through the frame, and there was a small crack where the rear tri meets the front tri. Both shocks needed a complete rebuild and many parts were far from original, a clear sign somebody had sold the higher value parts. Bought for 200, had to get rid of it at 160, but now I have a new old stock 2010 Hardrock Pro and I'm happy with it.
Did you notice how low the bottom bracket is??

If that’s an early SID fork they’re known to be fairly unreliable, but I think that’s probably the 2003 model you mentioned. Surprised you found the rebuild kit even though no instructions were around yet.

For half the time I was alive that bike was laying around sitting that's crazy.
V brakes weren't horrible as long as you didnt ding rims. Not near as good as discs but a HUGE improvement over cantilevers....
Haha yeah I remember having to make sure my rim was real straight. These Mavic rims have ceramic coatings for the brake surface. I heard they're super good

6:29 what type of oil do you use? I've never done a service on any of my forks and pretty sure my Polygon needs it now. 5w, is it fork specific? Motor oil? Have you used motor oir?
The service guide says what oil to use. I wouldn't use motor oil even if it's the correct weight because those oils have additives

any thoughts for a 6'3" male 250lbs 49 years old on a out of the box cheap bike (even wallyworld) ? i been looking at the schwinn boundary... for light trails and little road action.
I'm not fluent with Walmart bikes, but I know the Axum, Al Comp, and Taff Comp are decent. Find out if they have a cassette hub, also a 1x drivetrain, and it'll be a good buy and suit your needs.
