I spray painted my retro S-Works - Episode 2

  • On a major time crunch, I try to strip, prime, color, and clear coat over my S-Works FSR XC Pro bike to make it look like a 2021 S-Works Epic. Here's the catch, I've never done it before and I don't have a spray gun.
I'm following multiple guides from the channel ‪@ETOE‬ , thanks for the inspiration Martin!

Looks great man! First time is always a learning experience (I've been there). If you do it again you'll cut your time in half I'm sure. Please look into the correct filters for your respirator. If you can smell the chemicals you have the wrong filter. Those look like basic p100 particulate filters and if so do not remove chemicals from the air you are breathing, only particulate like dust, mold spores etc. Any automotive paint supplier will have the right one for $20-$30 sold as a complete respirator assembly. I love the build. A lot of these old bikes are still super fun to ride and worth the time and money to fix up.

I spray painted some cranks in 10 minutes yesterday, pretty much the same thing…hahahaha. Great job, I lack the patience and skill for any kind of paint work. $100 got my trek frame and cranks powder coated black. It wasn’t as smooth as I would have liked but it took care of a lot of the jacked up paint I had so I went for it. This paint job you just did makes my powder coated frame look like an elementary school art project.

    • @EvansMTBSaga
      @EvansMTBSaga  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

That's still pretty awesome to know $100 gets you powder coating. I spray painted my bike lots as a kid with no prep or clear coat, just the color coat. I'd refer to the paint job as a "40ft job" - looks good from 40ft away!

Great looking bike! Good paint work too. Just to note, the 2K paints used, you saying they are pretty toxic is an understatement. These paints are beyond toxic, so if you spray again, make sure that you have a one piece paint suit and a respirator that seals your eyes as well (at least). Clear coat in particular is incredibly potent. Please be safe!

You did a great job, in all my years of seasonally respraying my bmx, i only used plain colors and metallic. Always wondered how these translucent colors would work out.
Next time, i'd say, put the first coats down a little lighter. It prevents chipping!

I stumbled onto your vids just yesterday, and am very interested in what you have produced because I want to revive my 2002 Haro XCR (monocoque Intense Tracer frame) with the parts that I originally used to build it up back at that time. It was only ridden fifteen times, so it's in nearly perfect condition. The components I build it up with were topnotch for the time. Even the wheelset is really nice, boasting (or maybe not) titanium spokes and pricey hubs (non disc compatible). I spent a fortune on the completed bike. It was the culmination of owning and riding seven to eight different mountain bikes, most of which I'd built up. This included alu and ti HTs, and a four different dualies--two of which were ti.
As of now, I am debating whether to build it back with the XTR/Grip shift and three chainring front setup original to the bike, or update it in the same way you did with your S-works dualie. But, I have a question for you: I still have the original Fox Float XC rear shock and the Manitou Xvert fork. I'd rather rebuild both, but I am also debating whether to simply buy and replace as you did. What would you do?
So that you at least have some context, I am getting old (61) and am picking up mountain biking again after a twenty year hiatus. I only do basic X-country here in the NW Ohio/SE Michigan area. Topography is pretty mild compared to Utah! Anyway, this Haro frame was GREAT for me, but I am noticing the improvements of newer designs so I am torn. I really don't want to spend $4K for a new bike, and I like this Haro. I'd like to get it going again for under $1K .
My other questions is: if I decide to rebuild the shocks, is this a service you would provide? I get the impression you have done work for some of your viewers.
Dig your vids. Thanks for putting your work and knowledge out there. I'd forgotten how great of a sport MTB'n is, and intend to get back fully into it next spring. Actually, I just bought a slightly used 2021 Trek Marlin 7 from a brother (he had to go to a M from this L), so I am already hitting the trails. But I am not much of a fan or HTs.

I did a bike similar with the duplicolor Metalcast anodized orange to a black fade. I found the pigment would pool the heaviest in the welds and braze-ons. Found it miserable to work with. I did it over bare aluminum. Mistake. Says it can go over bare metal. Don't. It chips easily even with 2K gloss clear topcoat. Spraymax is a great product.

Oh nice a fade! I noticed slight pooling in the welds but I kinda liked the look. I hope there is no chipping especially with all the prep and primer that I did!

Ha, nice... I used that red over a gold and metallic brown base, giving me a candy apple red

9:10 - the problem is no paint shop will apply your logos. They will prime, apply silver, you have to take it, add decals, bring it back, they apply red, you have to take it, remove decals, bring it back, they apply clear. You will be facing $300 and driving back and forth. But I agree, painting frames right at home is super annoying and takes forever

No, but you've done a great job for spray cans. Always worth while trying something yourself.

Love that bike and paint job. Maybe when my specialized fsr xc gets chipped and scratched I will have to try to paint it. That red is amazing. Anyway great video. I liked and subscribe.
