I had ayoung horse get a similar injury years ago and this is exactly what my vet did. They have an amazing capacity to heal when they are young when given support like this. Also, to everyone who says to stall it instead of turning it out, it's 3 months old, needs its mother to nurse from constantly and mom needs the green gras to provide the milk; and the grass field is soft ground instead of a concrete stall it will be much more comfortable to walk and stand on and horses need to walk for proper digestion.
Don’t know much about her past but it’s awful keeping her fastened in a stall in the lovely sunshine she enjoys the sun and it’s really nice for her to be able to get out and enjoy the day, she can just do whatever she wants now and I’m sure that is better than being fastened in..

That tissue has been exposed so long that I don't know a surgeon who could do anything. It doesn't look like viable tissue and this is not a case where the ends could be debrided to bleed and reattach and same with the tendon.

I know that it looks like something good for that little baby. But if you looked at her leg, there was a lot of exposed tissue. And some people were saying that she probably severed a tendon. If that is true, than this little girl would need to wear that contraption on her leg for the rest of her life. She may never get to run and play again like the other equines. And if that is her future, then wouldn't it better and more humane to put her to sleep. Then she'd be able to run in Heaven with all the other animals. As sad as that sounds.
Poor thing. It might need the tendon sutured together if it was completely severed. I still appreciate your efforts to help this baby even if you are not a veterinarian.
I agree that due to this not being fresh a vet would have likely sedated, seen what the full damage was, if a tendon was damaged then it would need to be stitched back together after the entire wound was pretty much surgically scrubbed out. Then to get that tissue to go back together it would need to be debrided enough to be bleeding again and not healing closed, stitched back together. Then the most sturdy leg wraps possible and almost splint the leg if possible to keep it from moving as much as you can so the stitches and the freshly debrided area have enough time to heal together. Antibiotics to ensure no infections and changing the bandage every few days, but mostly to check the wound and rewrap as I would put the leg in a cast if we did those for equines. Probably stall for a week and limit movement so that leg is used and moved as little as possible. Last time I saw a wound like that an 18 mo old got into a different pasture where the farm tractor was sitting with the scraper bucket on the front. Horse was very sure of himself and believed he could jump it. . . turns out he wasn't as great of a jumper as he thought . . . . . /sigh. This poor baby got into something that made a huge and deep cut. Poor baby.

This is a mule filly (called a Molly mule) and I'm not sure this will be a fix. The extensor tendon was severed. They don't just grow back together. Tendons have poor blood supply, need surgical connections in a timely manner. It's most likely that she can't be fixed. Nice effort, but I'm afraid it is all for naught. I suspect she will have to be put down. How did that injury happen and why wasn't it dealt with right away?
It's a tendon injury. If it was severed where the cut was, then I'm not sure that this will help. But she's young, and nature sometimes finds a way. If the tendon was only partially torn it might heal. The horse hoof (or donkey in this case) has tendons for lifting the hoof forward (damaged) and drawing it back (undamaged) without the appropriate tension by having matching tendons, the back set will draw the hoof back, and a lack of undamaged tendons on the front means it's backwards until restricted.
She has a horrible injury. I wonder what happened to her in the first place. I hope your idea works and she is able to heal with everything being in their proper place. She has youth on her side so hopefully this will help everything heal fast and correctly. 🤞

@@Teyha8yes they can try. But remember equines can’t live on three legs if it doesn’t work. It’s good to see them try and save her first though for sure.
I understand your POV. Seeing that from how far we are with the camera and the fact the entire leg was bent back where it was gives me significant concern that there is a broken bone and tendon damage. I have rehabbed a horse with a broken leg before, but this was with hours of surgery to remove broken pieces that needed to go and rebuild pieces that needed to stay and then 6 mo of having an open wound I needed to clean daily + pcn injections before we went down to oral antibiotics and pain meds. It was expensive, vets require, and a ton of work for months and months. With this bending the way it is and the location I think that if you wanted to fix this then vet intervention and seeing how damaged things really are would be the only way. There are nerves, tendons, and bone in that area and it would take a significant amount of time to potentially fix and even then the animal may never be of use. It's not being said because we don't value humans or mules, but because an equine can not live on three legs and if the chance of fixing it is close to 0% then ending the animals suffering when this is an older wound and things have been exposed to the air for a while would actually be the kindest thing to do. This poor baby had already worn a bare spot with toughened skin on the front of the leg from walking on it. It may have nerve damage if it is walking that way and we would need to test if the animal still had feeling in the fetlock and just above the hoof. We can't really tell the severity of some of these things from youtube, but this one was so bad that if I walked up on that scene bc a friend called and asked for help I would be planning on a kind way to tell them that they need to end the animals suffering while I take a very good look at everything and thoroughly examine if anything can be done. It's not just keeping the animal alive, but QUALITY of LIFE the animal may have even if we can keep the animal's leg functional at all. @@Berry-7246 Mules actually hide their pain more than a horse does where they show lameness and limping. A mule can come in from pasture and go at grain with a 2 inch hole in it's chest and only the owner will notice something is off. They really hide it, but it doesn't mean they are not in pain or that they don't need any pain meds or probably anti-inflammatories or antibiotics in this case. In many situations pain meds are not given to both animals and people because the pain is doing it's job in telling the animal/person to not use that limb, step on that sore foot, rub up against things when they have an open wound and most vets prefer to take the natural route and only give pain meds when the desired effect of less pain will be helpful to the recovery, like a horse that needs to be walking around, but doesn't because of a laminitis flare up - needs to be moving to not just gain weight and stand around all day even with slightly sore feet.
Watching your video's restores my faith in human kind. We are capable of such cruelty but also of great kindness. I'm not a religious man but i pray that god smiles upon you every day.

WTH?!?! WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THAT?! Why was a Vet not called in? That's a HUGE wound that needs to be cleaned and stitched; medications to prevent infection. Take that animal to a sanctuary and report the owner. You really did a good job treating the wound and such a brilliant way to keep the hoof in the proper position, but the horse needs a VET.
These kinds of things can happen even with the best care just like a human child can be perfectly cared for and still break an arm on the playground. The wound looks to be relatively fresh as it isn't full of flies or necrosis and the top of the leg that it was walking on was dirty, but not raw or callused. This is the standard of care for this type of injury on such a young horse. I had someone dump trash over the fence into my pasture while I was at work and my colt had already injured herself on it by time I was home. Things happen beyond your control.
I know you tried to help, but it would likely have been better off if you just put it down. With such a severe break, it is not likely to ever heal well enough to regain full function and will break again some day if you manage to get it to fuse this time.
It's a tendon injury not a broken bone but I doubt that can heal, can already see it's laterally unstable to walk on and there is probably joint damage and will keep getting more joint damage from the lateral instability too.
OMG. My stomach is turning after watching just a few steps. That poor horse, holy crap. I’m not even sure I can watch the video knowing how much suffering they’re enduring 😢

As I am certain this one was, right after they replaced it in the video with the uninjured horse. It's fake.
Great work open gate. We love your videos. Hello, from Santa Clarita, California, USA!
HORRIBLE!!!! Poor animal.
Disgraceful to have left it like that.
Glad the owners found this issue for this animal and are addressing the issue.
G’day greetings from Tasmania Australia, that leg looks broken, I would have put a back brace on it, but it looks awful ! Thank you for showing this and all the videos you show I am a subscriber and Your channel is very informative and interesting, thank you John
OMG stop making her walk!!!
Awesome 👏 God bless you and this mule
You guys are the best. The animals you guys help, seem to be in terrible condition, until you do your thing. I never would've thought you could save this one. God bless you and your team.
Excellent work.😊
omg poor girl , heartbreaking watching her practically asking for help.
Please show a follow up
You are wonderful ! They would have put the horse down here instead of trying to help.
You certainly know what to do. Does the horse need pain killers? Please update. Central Victoria Australia 🇦🇺
It will be good. It's a mule not a horse
You are so wonderful Sir!!! Thanks for helping the little one!!! God Bless All Concerned!!!❤❤❤😊
Pretty ingenious shoe to hook up to a sursingle with elastic band. Nice work, guys! Whatever works!
Watching your video's restores my faith in human kind. We are capable of such cruelty but also of great kindness. I'm not a religious man but i pray that god smiles upon you every day.
This is a broken leg, guys!
My goodness, how awful that poor animal feels.

Im in new Zealand watching this show
You men are legends and have give your love to animals and people
Congratulations 😮
Amazing work well done. ❤
Thank you for helping her.
How does the owner let it get this far? This poor baby needs a caring owner.
The owner should be banned from having any animals 😢
Horses are notorious for finding ways to get hurt. Maybe it could have been prevented, maybe not.
God Bless and help her 💜🙏
Heart breaks for her. Bless you for helping 3 🙏
I can't find any updates on this. Did you do one, and I'm just looking in the wrong place?
I know you tried to help, but it would likely have been better off if you just put it down. With such a severe break, it is not likely to ever heal well enough to regain full function and will break again some day if you manage to get it to fuse this time.
It's a tendon injury not a broken bone but I doubt that can heal, can already see it's laterally unstable to walk on and there is probably joint damage and will keep getting more joint damage from the lateral instability too.
Thank you so much for helping her
God blessed you for helping this baby through a situation liked this
Well done guys
I can not even imagine the pain this sweet baby was in.
Oh my goodness! That looks so painful!
Omg did she sever the tendon?
My vet would have said, "Yes, you're right. That's a terrible injury. Where do you want to put it down?
Amazing work 👏
You people are very very kind enough God bless you all ❤
The owner should be ashamed of himself! If you can’t take care of animals 🤬🤬🤬 don’t have them.
Aww the poor baby what a horrific injury, I applaud their efforts but I sadly doubt she could survive… I’d love to be proved wrong.
God man i hope that unusual to see procedure works out well. Thanks for attempting a remedial work cos that hoof & leg was messed up!
It’s so sad that she was allowed to get in this mess.
Wtf Get that animal some real treatment. That is insane.
It is as if the horse knows she is being helped. Very cooperative
Great work. You guys are the best.
I've not seen anything like this, ingenious idea, wonderful outcome 😊
Great job ❤❤❤❤
OMG. My stomach is turning after watching just a few steps. That poor horse, holy crap. I’m not even sure I can watch the video knowing how much suffering they’re enduring 😢
