    I am not comfortable adding this to my site or TH-cam channel. I receive many emails and messages asking me how people can help support The Art Gear Guide, mainly I think due to the fact that I purchase all of the supplies myself, except those sent directly from companies kind enough to do so. I have decided to add a donations button to my site, however, I feel the best way to add such a campaign is as follows, all donations made will be used to purchase art products for review, however, all products purchased using donated funds, after they have been reviewed, will be used as giveaways to subscribers of the TH-cam Channel, the web site or any of the above social media platforms. This way I personally will not benefit from financial donations. I have set this channel and site up for my own enjoyment and not profitable gain. I feel with this support method, everyone wins but not in a financial.

    Finally, thank you so much for all of your support, without all of you, this channel and The Art Gear Guide would simply not be the same.

    Your presentations are the best, please know you and your work are appreciated, so please keep presenting. Thank you for the great work and sharing. Now, I do not have these but I will get some in the near future. I mix and match different manufacturers brands so to have the largest color range. I also mix the medias as well to get the look that I am striving for. Keep up the great work and as always looking forward to your next post. Stay well and be positive.

    Nice video; I have not tried this brand of pastel pencils but I have tried the Carb Othello ones that my husband bought for me. I generally use the regular pastels depending on the subject and the surface. One thing you might want to try is sanded paper. In order to get the "base" layer of color down, I have used a bristle brush with alcohol (so it doesn't buckle the paper.) It is useful to include a comparison discussing how soft they are as well since the more layers you use, the better it is to have softer pastels. In my work, I generally use NuPastels for the first layers and work up to Senneliers and Rembrants for the final layers.

      Hi Lisa, I have a set of the CarbOthello which are due to come out in the August Issue of COLORED PENCIL Magazine review, but I have tested and used them and I absolutely love them. I know what you mean about comparing them, but when I do reviews I try my best not to mention other companies and keep the review just to that product.
      However, I am bringing out a series of videos where I only compare products. I will be pitting Artist grade colored pencils against cheaper brands, I have a total of 5 pastel pencil brands which I plan on testing them against each other on a video testing softness, pigment strength etc.
      I think it is just the way my brain works, I try to organise things in my head and segregate the videos. I have so many videos planned for 2018 and have already got over 40 new products to review this year alone. I plan on 2018 being a real treat of a year for my subscribers and hopefully repay you guys for all your awesome support with loads of giveaways.

      @katalinelo8011 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am no way a professional but I would advise you to start with a small set or just some colours open stock. Do some smaller projects on different papers with different techniques (and preferably with different brands of pencils) and if you like it, get a bigger set of your favourite. That is how I handle when I am trying new things. So in case I don't like them, I don't waste too much.

    I have trouble with my finger joints coming apart and yep you're right it is hard using a blade. But it's worth the pain rather than wasting pencils and sharpeners. Use a sanding block to get a point.

That would be cool to have a channel for let's say intermediate to pro just not for showing off but to express ideas. Some might go Scifi others old fashioned it would be very unique without having do deal with the annoying questions like what pencils should I use? How about sharpeners? I believe you covered that.

      @TheArtGearGuide  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jennie, there are channels like what you have mentioned. Lisa from Lachri Fine art covers every medium, oils, acrylics, watercolor, pencils and markers; I think the only medium she doesn’t cover is pastel and that is only because she doesn’t like the dust and texture of it on paper. But Lisa has a dedicated playlist on her channel for the medium you might be interested in.
      Another channel that is exclusively watercolor is by a channel called “the Mind of Watercolor”. There are many other channels dedicated to just painting but I can’t think of names, I will have a look today for you and get back to you with the links.

    • @TheArtGearGuide

      Hi Jay, they are softer than the Carbothelos, I actually have a set of the Conte, Bruynzeel and Caran Dache Pastel pencils to review, so as of yet, I can't comment on the Conte softness. Thing I like about the Carbothelo and FC Pitt Pastel pencils is they are available in 60 sets, I like to have a nice range of colours with pastel pencils. I have just been given a 76 set of the Caran Dache Pastel Pencils for my Birthday and Christmas for the next 20 years, but the range of colors in that set are to die for. As soon as my reviews are done and uploaded I will send you a notification. Thank you so much for stopping by the channel and for your question.

      Thank you for taking the time to respond. I’m in the market for a full set of pastel pencils and am considering the Derwent 72 and the FC Pitt 60 as well as the Conte. I’m a portrait artist - my medium of choice had been with Sennelier oil pastels (I have the full wooden box set of 125) and Polychromos for facial details as well as hair. But soft pastels intrigue me (have ordered the Rembrandt 90 half stick set from Amazon) but need a set of pencils that will allow me the colour range to do portraits in soft pastels. Your thoughts and recommendations are welcome. TY

      The Art Gear Guide The nice thing about having both Faber-Castell and Carbothello is that they offset each other when it comes to fugitive colors. Whenever I buy a set, full or otherwise, I take out the colors with the worst lightfastness ratings. While one brand has more greens that aren’t lightfast, the other has more reds.

    You are such a bad influence! I was ready to leave for work earlier, all done up in around 46 layers of wool (I'm too mean to put the heating on very high in my warehouse and it's darn cold over there at the moment) and I spotted this. 1/2hr later I've got my soft pastels out and my pastel pencils and I'm working on a really terrible picture I started a while ago! I can't understand how anyone can get detail with their fingers. My picture looks like a child did it in chalk, but I'm inspired to try again. I need some of those smudgers to stop things looking so basic I think. Thanks for the inspiration to get the supplies out.

    hey, Ive been looking online for an answer, but I cant find it, so I figured youd be the best one to ask. the derwent pastels are water soluble, are these as well? its probably a stupid question, but im new to the "serious" art scene.

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Angela, thank you so much for stopping by the channel and thank you for your question. The vast majority, if not all Pastels are water soluble to a certain extent. Pastel is a very powdery substance and when water is added, the pigment disperses and once dried helps to create a wonderful background area of color. Pastel Pencils however have a little bit less pigment in them than say the blocks or soft cylinders. The reason this is the case is because Pastel is as I mentioned powdery, so to keep it in a thin pencil barrel, you need a lot of binding agents, which sometimes almost waters down the pigment content. I hope this helps you out

    Advice, please! I bought half a dozen Faber Castell Pitt Pastel Pencils as I fancied trying them out as backgrounds in Adult Colouring books .. popular ones which are of quality paper. Trials on scrap paper are demonstrating a smudging, which would be a real spoiling of work. I wonder if anyone has tried this? I was thinking to use soft cotton wool in little balls to 'work in' the background ... but would the pigment still 'dust off', like talcum powder? Any pastels experiences, I would love to hear! Thank you, Susan

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Susan the problem you are having is to do with the paper not having enough tooth and gripping hold of the pastel.
      One thing you can try is using a fixative, there are loads on the market. If you’ve never used one, what you would do is lay down you pastel layers, work them into the paper as best you can. If you only have pastel pencils a better idea when working on larger toothless areas would be to use a craft knife and scrape the pastel core over the are you want to cover, allowing the pastel dust to settle from the core onto the paper.
      Once you’ve done this you can use your finger, pastel shaper, pastel spatula or cotton wool to blend in the pastel. With a lot of Fixatives once you spray a fine mist on to the paper you can apply a few more pastel layers. Once you have completed your drawing with a Final Fixative apply one last even coat of spray but once the final fixative is used no more layers can be applied to your work so you need to make sure you are happy before applying it.
      You should check out some wonderful pastel artists I know who give amazing advice on their channels, Colin Bradley and Emma Colbert both amazing pastel artists with excellent advice and tips. Hope this helps you out

    Eeee! New video! Been eyeing these bunch for a while because they look gorgeous but I've never tried pastel pencils before.
    Also a little note: I believe theres a bit of an echo in the room you're filming? I don't recall hearing this echo before in previous videos but it is a bit distracting. Maybe it's your mic? idk but yeah thats just me.
    Still a great review as usual Harry.

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much for the comment, I am not sure why you are hearing an echo, nothing has changed since at least the last 4 videos, I did get a new Mic but that was before Christmas and I have done videos since then. Ill double check the audio settings in Final Cut Pro, I may have missed something or made a mistake. Sorry for that as I know there is nothing worse than bad audio, the audio issues have always been my downside with the videos and this is actually my third Mic, but I will certainly keep trying as more and more people are watching the videos and I want to make sure people have a pleasurable experience and not an annoying one. Thank you so much for letting me know.

    • @linwong1494
      @linwong1494 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      After a second watch and turning up my audio I think maybe I should be more specific. Its not really an echo but more like your voice has been turned kinda into a robot? haha it's a weird way to explain it since I'm no good with audio but yeah. That and if you listen carefully you can almost hear a static as well, best example I can find is in 5:59, voice wise and the static.
      Static isn't so much of an issue for me since i could only hear it when i turned my audio way up but the voice issue still stands out to me. No problem btw! I love your videos and no worries it wasn't so distracting that I found the video annoying. Of course all of this could just be my own computer issue too haha
      If it's any encouragement, I think your audio quality has increased a lot since your first few reviews so you're on the right track!

    • @suewilkinson910
      @suewilkinson910 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Harry, just an idea, I think that the audio can sometimes sound rather brittle. I've seen shots of your room and I recall you have a laminated wood flooring and your desk is in the corner by a hard wall and is itself a hard surface. It might not make any difference, but try putting a couple of cushions on your desk at the back out of the way and just see if they act as a damper and soften the sound a little. It didn't happen with your old mic, but this one may actually be better at picking up the room ambience and is getting too much hard surface reflection. It's an easy enough experiment. I'm sure your sofa has a cushion or two you could borrow. Recording sound is an art all of it's own!

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'll give it ago, but my desk drives my wife nuts at the best of times as it is so messy and I have so many packages from companies to review products. I am afraid with regards to the audio, there is not much I can do until one of the kids leave the house and I claim their room. To date I have purchased three microphones totalling just under £400, a £300 software bundle in Final Cut Pro, shock mounts, mic arms. I am afraid I have run out of options now unless I boot one of the kids out which Vicky is coming round to regarding our youngest daughter going through the teens lol. Ill try the pillows but other than that guys I am sorry. Of course it could just be my voice and as much as I love doing these videos I am not going in for major surgery to enhance my voice lol.

    • @suewilkinson910
      @suewilkinson910 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Art Gear Guide you don’t have to keep cushions there when you aren’t recording. And anyway I’m not bothered by the sound at all, I just wonder if some damping might help. I have spent most of my life working in theatres so I am used to trying to tweak sound and light effects just to see what happens. Don’t stress over anything. Your videos are really helpful and way more professional now to when you started. Sadly, the better they get the more people expect. It’s an annoying sort of reverse compliment.

      The Stabilo Pastel Pencils are more referred to as chalk and the core of the Stabilo are a little firmer than the Faber Castell Pitt Pastels but generally speaking pastel pencils are a drier dustier medium, they are not like traditional Colored pencils.
