    I really appreciate this video. I already had a lot of Stabilo because I use them often to blend my Poly Chromos, So I just went to Blicks and bought a few more and then bought the full set of Faber Castell Pitt Pencils. I find myself laying down my dark colors with my FC and then going on top and highlighting and blending with Stabilo. It is working well. I set it, then go in and finish details with Poly Chromos...so much fun

    Thanks for making this vid. I have bought the Stabilos as my first set of pencils, and will get the Pitts in a while. So many love to work with the both of them.
    And you gave a good demonstration of why the Pastelmat is so essential. I use Mi-Teintes, but I have some pads of Pastelmats ready for when I get better.
    I plan to get PanPastels in a while, after the Pitt Pastels.

    Very good video, thank you so much for sharing. Soft pastels used to be my medium of choice many years ago. I've always used Carbothelos with my pastel pencils. I've always loved them for their softness. But recently, I've been wondering about the Pitt pencils. I didn't really research them because I haven't used pastels in so long. But when I do, I'm gonna have to get these because they seem to be a great addition to a pastel supplies collection. Thank you again.

    It’s unclear what scale Carbothello use to measure lightfastness but Faber Castell use the blue wool scale and even their 1* is blue wool 3 to 4 (up to 50 years) so IMHO the FC is likely more reliable re lightfastness.

    • @NaomiCoutureArt
      @NaomiCoutureArt  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s good to know about the Pitt pastels. I have heard dry mediums like pastels are naturally more lightfast then wet mediums like watercolor. But I don’t know how reliable that was. I got the Carbotello lightfast chart off their site. I can link to it in the description. I couldn’t find one off the faber castel site but I found multiple sites that had the same lightfast info so that’s what I used for them.

    • @Kyomiibrown
      @Kyomiibrown 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NaomiCoutureArt Yeah it’s a little odd about FC and their LF chart not seemingly available on their own website yet many other places have the ratings. I do think both sets compliments each other as you point out.

    • @mpgnz73
      @mpgnz73 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I'm not so sure about Faber-Castell. I've tried to find out their actual methodology and if they used the Blue Wool scale they should be able to publish the 1-8 rating. They don't seem to be too transparent about how they actually achieve the star ratings.

    • @nancyloomis3046
      @nancyloomis3046 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately it seems that too many art supply makers, outside of the biggest paint makers (watercolors, oils, acrylics,) and premium color pencil makers, can be kind of quiet about how they rate the lightfastness of the color products they produce like pastels pencils and ink products (except for Pan Pastels, they include clear pigment info on every color they make.) IMHO the biggest and most competitive artist grade PAINT and premium color pencil makers are transparent about their pigments and ratings only because it’s such a huge market and customers demand it. Pastel pencils are a much smaller market…not that Stabilo and FC pastel pencils aren’t excellent quality, they are. But…the best and most lightfast pigments are very expensive and makers will only put the best pigments into the products if it’s worth it for them. That’s my 2cents anyway. 😊

  • @AlexisCassandraArt
    @AlexisCassandraArt 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    This is a great comparison!! I love the side by side color charts for both of them. The faber castell are definitely a harder pastel pencil which makes them different enough from the stabilos. I have to use Pastelmat always because if I use any other pastel paper, the dust created really bothers me! Which sharpener do you prefer to use for pastel pencils?

    • @NaomiCoutureArt
      @NaomiCoutureArt  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree pastelmat paper is the best! I use the derwent super point mini, I have one for my colored pencils and one for my pastel pencils. The pastel pencils will dull the blade quicker, but I run a woodless graphite pencil through to keep it sharp after every time I sharpen a handful of them. (I'm sure a normal graphite pencil would be good too)

  • @ColorfullyOptimistic
    @ColorfullyOptimistic 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Awesome comparison! Thank you. I do like some of the blues from the Stabilo. I might take a screenshot and buy the Stabilo colors that enhance the Pitt Pastels open stock (since I have the full set of Pitt Pastels). Then again, I have full set syndrome, so might just buy the full set one day lol. I do want to try the Stabilo though because they are softer and one thing I don't like about the Pitts is how hard the lead is (that and the scratchies lol - but that's with any pastel pencil).

    • @NaomiCoutureArt
      @NaomiCoutureArt  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I find they don’t scratch quite as much but they still make the noise a bit. Haha full service syndrome always gets ya! I’m glad you enjoyed the comparison 😄

  • @BeckyTregear
    @BeckyTregear 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I've read that dry pigments are more lightfast than those that are in wet media, like watercolours. So pastels will generally last longer anyway. The sets you have look pretty….I am still undecided as to which set of pastel pencils I might buy. I am thinking just one set, but need to do more research. Thank you for this helpful comparison! Seems like PastelMat is the way to go.😊

    • @NaomiCoutureArt
      @NaomiCoutureArt  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes pastelmat is definitely the way to go. You could just go buy a few pencils from each set open stock and play around with them to see which you like better.

    • @NaomiCoutureArt
      @NaomiCoutureArt  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      These are pastel pencils not wax or oil based. Honestly they feel pretty close, the stabilo probably blends a bit easier as they are softer. If you looking to cover a large area you would go through a lot of your pencil. If you using pastels I would look into pan pastels or pastel sticks for a base layer and then use the pastel pencil for details on top. If you’re looking for colored pencils I like derwent lightfast or prismacolor for large areas and polychromos for details. I have a few videos using both colored pencils and pastels if you want to see how each work. I hope this helps.

    • @NaomiCoutureArt
      @NaomiCoutureArt  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If you mean pet portraits I would go for the faber castel as they would be better for fur details. The carbothello blend smoother so they might be better for people portraits. Honestly I don’t think you would be disappointed in either set. I would get one and just get single colors from the other set if you need them.

    Just wondering, are the Stabilo Carbothello pencils really pastels? They are so bright.

    • @NaomiCoutureArt
      @NaomiCoutureArt  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As far as I can see on their site and by using them, yes they are pastels. I love how bright they are. However like I mention in the video they get away with having such bright colors because they aren’t all lightfast. It’s hard to make really bright colors lightfast that’s why you don’t always see them in high end brands. But that doesn’t bother me because I will scan them.

      If your asking which one I prefer my answer would be both! But if I could only choose one it would depend what subjects I’m drawing. Faber caster has more natural tones good for animals and landscapes. Stabilo has some more vibrant colors good for botanical or birds or if you like using bright colors.
