  • I personally think Koh-I-Noor are an absolutely fantastic company, they provide excellent quality art supplies at incredibly low prices making good art supplies accessible to so many more people.
Don't forget to check out my written review of the Koh-I-Noor Pastel Pencils to find out the prices of the sets and the lightfast information for the Pastel Pencils.

I am not comfortable adding this to my site or TH-cam channel. I receive many emails and messages asking me how people can help support The Art Gear Guide, mainly I think due to the fact that I purchase all of the supplies myself, except those sent directly from companies kind enough to do so. I have decided to add a donations button to my site, however, I feel the best way to add such a campaign is as follows, all donations made will be used to purchase art products for review, however, all products purchased using donated funds, after they have been reviewed, will be used as giveaways to subscribers of the TH-cam Channel, the web site or any of the above social media platforms. This way I personally will not benefit from financial donations. I have set this channel and site up for my own enjoyment and not profitable gain. I feel with this support method, everyone wins but not in a financial.

Finally, thank you so much for all of your support, without all of you, this channel and The Art Gear Guide would simply not be the same.

Thank you for this video, Harry. I think Koh-I-Noor suffers from a perceived value problem. Since the materials are so inexpensive compared to their competitors, I think people perceive the product to be of a lesser value just due to the price difference. They are making great products and I hope we can get more folks in the US to give them a try.

I am completely with you about Koh-I-Noor and it's one reason I subscribed to your channel. Even though I'm not into pastels (just thinking about buying exactly this set for a few month), I'm always glad to find a review channel from europe as yours.
There are not many reviews about products from KIN out here on youtube. I think it's because many reviews for art products come from the region around US or Canada and the company isn't really known there. I can't explain it otherwise, because I completely share your opinion about the price-quality balance and don't know any comparable company.
If I want to try any new art product and KIN offers it, I know that I won't go completely wrong and will most likely get a quality that other companies will charge at least 50-100% more.
My 72 set of KIN Polycolors did cost me 30€, for my 72 Mondeluz (I was more than lucky), I paid just 17€ and the Gioconda 48 set ist between 25-30€ right now.
Okay, I'm from Germany, I basically grew up with it and you'll find their products in nearly every art store because of the companys history and so on, but I feel even in the UK KOH-I-NOOR isn't too much around or people in the UK are equally camera shy as many German artists.

    Hi Harry.
I got these in Latvia, and I have not regret getting them. I'm with you, on that people who wants to try out pastels, should get these. They are awesome to work with, and don't break the bank. They have all the colors you need, to do what you need. Whether it's floral, nature, urban sketches or skin.
Thank you for another great review Harry :D

KUM brand manual sharpeners are excellent. They are so sharp they don't break the leads of pastel pencils, and you can buy replacement blades very easily too. I recommend Kum sharpeners from Germany.

Thanks again Harry. I had never heard of Koh-I-Noor before I saw your first review on the polycolor pencils. I am also now a huge fan of the Koh-I-Noor line of products. As you have said the quality is quite a bit higher than their price point would suggest. I have the full set of both the Polycolor and Mondeluz pencils and have recently been thinking of getting the pastel pencils so this review came at a great time!! I really like the colour match between the Polycolor and Mondeluz lines. It allows really easy mixed media and still having a perfect color match. I really like the performance of the mondeluz and found I like them better than the spectrum noir watercolor pencils that I have ( one of the 24 sets). Again another great revie and thank you for reviewing so many of the less well known brands which helps with bringing in goodd quality art supplies at a great price!!!

I bought the Kohinoor soft pastel set of 72 and I am very happy with them. You don't hear much about them in the professional scene, but I have to say that Kohinoor have the best nuances of colour in their sets. Almost every day when I am painting and I'm searching for a particular colour I will find it in my Kohinoor set. The pastels being less expensive is good, as I don't feel bad using them liberally.
Thanks for this review - I am considering buying the Kohinoor pastel pencils soon.

I have the Koinoir brand and the Gioconda. I realize that they are harder. Lately I have looked for companies that carry Unison, Terry Ludwig and and the big wigs of soft pastel that might be slightly damaged but they compensate by adding more. If you would like to know the company I would be happy to pass it on. Generally it is about $30US plus additional product given, name brand and extras. To ship across the country it cost $5. I even make my pan pastels from crumbs. Why waste right?

Hi KaBluey, first of all thank you so much for stopping by the channel and for asking your question I really appreciate you taking the time to watch the videos. I do indeed have the Bruynzeel Pastel Pencils and I will be reviewing them soon. My very next review that I will be uploading in the next day or so is of the Conte Pastel Pencils. So when I do a review of pastels, I try to make the next review watercolor pencils or colored pencils or graphite pencils etc, I just try to make sure I don’t do back to back reviews of the same medium. I don’t know why I do things like this because nobody has ever said anything, I just like to make sure that the uploads remain interesting.
I will let you know as soon as the Bruynzeel Pastel Pencil review is about to go up, but thank you so. Much for your interest and stopping by the channel, I really appreciate it.

The Conte pastel pencils are more like a soft pastel than the Conte sticks which are not exactly a pastel, but similar to a hard pastel. The Conte sticks are a wax base so somewhere between a wax crayon a s a hard pastel. I believe they do make a soft pastel in stick form but I haven't tried it. I do really like their pastel pencils.

I bought these today and I'm having trouble creating white highlights. The white sort of blends into the colour below, creating more of a smoothing/blending effect than highlights. This is my first time trying out this medium, though, so I'm probably doing something wrong. I wonder if I should apply more pressure? If anyone's got any tips, they're very welcome. But yes, I agree! These pencils are relatively inexpensive, and they are very vibrant and rich! As someone who'd only known of Koh-I-Noor due to their clothing spin dryers until I stumbled upon their art products this morning, I gotta say I am very satisfied with my purchase. I also bought their kneaded eraser and it's just as impressive!

@The Art Gear Guide 130g white drawing paper, but I'm not sure if it's suitable. A friend's also commissioned me to draw a portrait on a canvas with white gesso treatment, and I'd meant to maybe use the white chalk pastel to create highlights, but now I'm not sure if it'll work. Maybe I'll have to spray the painting at intervals and only highlight after locking it in for it to be a crisp white instead of having it become blended?

Hey, thanks for all the great content!
I'm a pastel-newbie, but I have tried all the other mediums (in pencil form). And I love it! Think I will survive mentally any crisis with my pencils. A lock-down becomes a mental break free! But I have an important question for you...
where I live Royal Talens pencils come cheap. Same price as Hardmuth koh-i-noor pencils max.
So if the price is about the same, should I go for Gioconda 48 or Bruynzeel design pastel 48?
(I love the koh-i-noor Mondulez but ain't that crazy about their Polycolor pencils. And with the Bruynzeel design it's the other way around. Greatings from Belgium

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Okay, so I had to get both these pencils out and do a bit of testing and side by side comparing. They are both very similar but I would say that the Bruynzeel Design are a little bit better. I found the pigments to be ever so slightly strong with the Design, the Design barrel is a little bit thicker which I personally like and the core on the design is also a little bit thicker.
there really isn't much of a difference, but if I had a choice to make it would be the Bruynzeel Design Pencils for me. Hopefully Bruynzeel will be taking on board my recommendation and expanding their design range to perhaps sets of 60 or 72. They are really nice pencils and I just feel that there should be more of them, especially considering they are aimed at the professional end of the market.
I hope this helps you out a bit and thank you so much for your comment and support.

Have you ever noticed that your audio track lags behind the picture? I noticed the sound of scribble while swatching and a little longer than the pencil was seen touching the paper. A friend of mine always snaps with his fingers once before starting his content. Later on he can put the soundbars in the editing programm exactly on top of each other.

Unfortunately there isn’t anything I can do about the older videos, although when I get time I have been redoing a few of the older videos as the video quality in the older videos is terrible compared to what I am producing now. That is really difficult to answer because the CarbOthello are a bit different to the Derwent and Koh-I-Noor pastels, the CarbOthello are a little bit more chalky.
But if I had to pick an order I’d say the CarbOthello first because of their palette and lightfast ratings. The Koh-I-Noor and Derwent Pastels are very very similar with regards to texture and feel but Derwent have 72 colours and Koh-I-Noor only have 48. So I’d have to say Derwent next only because of palette size.
But something is happening at Derwent that I never thought I’d see and I’m not sure how I feel about it and that is they are putting their prices through the roof. They have a leather pencil case on their site for over £300 which is crazy and the irony is the pencil case is aimed toward the luxury market, so it is very small and I think would be lucky if it held 24 pencils. So there is price to consider between the Derwent and Koh-I-Noor.
Mind you, in fairness to Derwent, so many companies are increasing their prices as well I have noticed. Sadly they are pricing more and more artists out of the market place. I purchased a 150 set of Prismacolor two years ago for £90, that same set now sells on Amazon for £170 sometimes if you are lucky £150, which I know is still cheap in comparison to other sets.

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I have a review of the Caran d’Ache Pastel Pencils on my channel as well, but I would say they are very similar with regards to core softness, the main difference being is the pigment strength in the Caran d’Ache Pastel pencils is stronger. However, considering the huge price difference the Koh-I-Noor pastel pencils are fantastic pencils given how inexpensive they are. I will be adding a comparison video soon of pastel pencils and I will be comparing Derwent, Faber Castell, Conte, Koch-I-Noor, Caran d’Ache, Stabilo Carothello and Bruynzeel. Hopefully some useful information will come from the comparison.
