- If you’re scared to begin remember to take the first step.
If anyone would have told me five years ago that I’d be running a small scale wood manufacturing business in my backyard woodshop I’d of laughed. I didn’t even have a “shop” and I tinkered around with things from time to time in our two car garage.
My first step came as a huge leap a couple of years ago after I built my shop and way before I was completely settled into it! I answered a FB post for a guy that needed some plaques made. He told me right off the bat he needed someone who could supply him with 1000 plaques a month. Me being very ambitious said, “I’ll give it a go!”
He told me I could start with as few or as many as I was comfortable with. Not gonna lie to anybody, after I did the first 100 I was ready to throw in the towel. It took me wayyyyyy longer than it should have and I probably paid him on the first few go arounds.
I have had a few good friends give me great advice along the way and help me refine my process. I have bought/upgraded my tools as needed, so I have kept my overhead low and remained relatively debt free.
I am now making well over 1000 plaques a month and have formed a long term partnership with my customer. I have plans to do additional work for them in the future, but am very proud to have achieved all I have over the past couple of years!
If you are thinking about making a change, big or small, just remember to start small and keep moving forward!
