This Bed is made from Walnut and is designed to suit a queen sized mattress. The intention behind the headboard design was to create a ‘blank canvas’ where I could add in a unique element that would really set this bed a part from anything else I had seen and the multiple iterations is proof that this headboard was truly a blank canvas for different ideas to occur.
To be honest I think headboard idea no.2 is actually my favourite as it is subdued and probably more appropriate for the bedroom, which is a place to relax but, design number 3, although somewhat intense, does represent a new technique for me, not the steam bending but the method of using multiple strips of wood to create flowing curves. Once again this has been inspired by one of my favourite furniture designers Joseph Walsh.
Now you may think that the thin strips of wood from design no.3 are fragile, but due to the intense curves, this structure is under enough tension and has enough support from its adjacent curve to have more than enough rigidity.
One thing I didn't make clear in this video is that the original client and I had discussed a ball park estimate for the bed before I began designing, now granted my quote came in at the higher end of the estimate, this number still shouldn't have come at a surprise. Also the details to the headboard where added for me, these were not part of the original design for the client.
If you’re interested in knowing more about the steam bending process I go into detail about it in a video on Patreon. I also have a shop update where I show how I fixed the curves to the headboard.
As always thank you so much for your support here on TH-cam. The fact that you even watch my videos means I can continue to make more unique builds and share them with you. Those curves are absolutely gorgeous, I saw how particular you were in curving and spacing, but I had no idea how much better they would look with some shaving, rounding, and in their finished depth of colour. I can't imagine getting a piece like this commissioned. Way out of my budget, but I hope one day I can have a piece in my home with the same heart put into it.

Frankly, I LOVED all three headboard designs - especially how they looked in the lighting as you showed them off. The stipple pattern looked incredible with the finish on, the charred wood looked like it would fit perfect in a New York Penthouse apartment, but the curved piece you ended up choosing just looks like a priceless piece of art. I can understand why you weren't happy, until you reached that point, since the piece was for you. I think a paying client would have been happy with any of the three headboard options.

    Nick,
You are, by far, my most looked forward to subscription on TH-cam. I've said it before and I'll say it again; your work is inspirational and educational.
Your videography and editing skills continue to improve visibly with each new release, and my enjoyment as you slowly reveal both the vision of the piece you have designed as well as the realization of that vision is one of the highlights of my day when you release a new project.
Watching you iterate through the headboard designs because of your need for perfection has helped me understand why I have a couple of unfinished projects that just didn't turn out how I wanted. They have languished in obscurity, consuming shop space as I look at them with dissatisfaction every time I look their way. I am inspired by the way you chose to continue forward with this, and your bent wood lamination design has given me ideas on how to complete two of them.

It's really not, if you get a custom piece done, you pay the craftsman. If you can't afford it, you don't commission in the first place.
The term is "welching", and it's an ABC of fraud, not business. Though he may have left himself legally open to it if he doesn't do his commissions properly, it's still a shitty thing to do.

    • @rowdy9642
      @rowdy9642 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +96

But he did not deliver the piece?
Sure, he dedicated time to developing the design to try and acquire the client’s business but it’s hardly “welching” or “getting screwed over” when someone’s budget doesn’t align with an ambitious vision.
Plenty professions expend resources just for the sake of trying to acquire new business.

      1. You arent paying for the completed piece, you're paying for the sum of ALL its parts: 1-off unique design -creativity-, the materials which would floor those who have no bloody clue, the consumable costs, wear & tear on tools & machinery, tapes, glues, saw blades, fasteners, insurance ...even waste disposal. Very few makers are getting $20-30,000 for a table. Makers offer great value. If you cant afford unique, high end quality, might see ya at ikea. And stop complaining.

This piece blew my mind. I just started out doing some simple woodworking projects and it's really inspiring to see what is possible to make! Specially when bending the wood using steam! 🤯

It's not often that I subscribe to a channel after a single video, but you sir have definitely earned it. While all 3 were great designs, the last one is clearly stunning and on another level. I love the way you go through your thought process, embrace mistakes and educate at the same time. Your experience shows and it was a pleasure watching you create this masterpiece.

To stop the pieces from sliding when gluing, you can wait for the glue to get tacky before placing the pieces together. Also, I've heard that salt can help mitigate slide as well.

I liked all 3 of the end designs, but I LOVED the black charred wood finish. By far my favorite, especially after the rest of the wood was stained darker. Really funny to me that you hated it so much since that would have easily been the one I went with. Keep up the great content man!

Agreed. Once the walnut was finished I felt the charred wood fit really well. The steam bent pieces are stunning, though my only worry would be damaging them in use (e.g. putting an elbow through when leaning on the headboard).
The overall bed shape is great; really elegant.

Thanks for great content from a software engineer, wanna be part time wood worker. You approach, designing first, is exactly how I approach software design and it's helped me learn a heap of new things. I've met resistance to this approach from team members, but it's all turned out very well every single time. Glad to hear that works well in your profession as well. Cheers mate!

I need to build a steambox. It's something I've always wanted and this video made me realize how much further I could take my woodworking/furniture building. Those curves are just stunning. I can imagine not being able to resist touching this piece in person, which is why I don't go many places... especially museums. Gorgeous. Idiosyncratic.

  • @MR-vg7yn

The one thing I don't like about this video is the whole "the customer screwed me over" attitude. If you put a lot of time into your design _before_ showing it to the customer and talking about the price, it's not really the customer's fault, as you pointed out during the video. By all means, get paid for the design process, that's absolutely sensible, but it's just not the customer's fault you didn't do that back then. Sure, he could have told you "no, way too expensive for me", but from what you've told us in this video, that's pretty much all he did wrong. That's a far cry from "totally screwed me over", sorry.
That said: The final result is pretty awesome. I think the burned wood looks pretty good, too, but would probably work better if it popped up somewhere else on the bed as well, perhaps the foot board or the legs? My favorite is the second, "structured" design, though. The bent strips are interesting and look awesome, but too intense for the bedroom for my taste.

The tannins in the Walnut (Oak has more) will react with 0000 steel wool/vinegar mix to ebonize the wood. Could be an alternate method to the charring technique. The piece came out amazing, as usual.

Your shop is a dream! This design is INSANE! LOVE the curves on the headboard. So "simple". Love walnut and the pearls of wisdoms if you will lol. Def. took a few tries to learn the same lesson which originally left me quite drained and disheartened. But like you said, they're important lessons to learn. Thanks for making this video!

STUNNING absolutely love it woodwork meets art. I have subscribed to see more. I am now 63 years of age, as a young man I began an apprenticeship with a cabinet maker, I always loved working with wood but this was short lived as my real passion was photography. An opportunity arose in that field and I switched. Now, following a 35 year career as a commercial photographer I am retired from it and have set up my little workshop and am back to woodwork and wood turning. I am inspired by what I see here, thank you for sharing your skill and vision!

Bro. I'm not a wood worker but I love sculpting and on a small scale I've used soap stone, salt-blocks...and wood. This vid came up in my feed, and I'm glad it did. That bed is drop-dead, one-of-a-kind, gorgeous. Your eventual success and victory is made sweeter by your perseverance to remain true to your heart despite each set back. Marcus Aurelius said: "The impediment to action advances action. What stands in the way becomes the way." In truth it's the journey and the struggle that creates value and worth. Well done, mate. Well done!
