    Tough call on the favorite. The five minute version would get used most frequently because of less guilt cutting into it 😊. I like the clean design of the five hour and the beautiful complexity of the five day. The five day version wins the challenge out of sheer admiration for the craftsmanship.

    • @headleshydra
      @headleshydra 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +41

      The 5 day one is endgrain - so won't mark up as much as the other versions. Imagine holding a handful of spaghetti, and cutting it with a knife. when you cut it on the flat/long/horizontal side, there's a lot of resistance. If you push the knife in the "end" where all the ends of spaghetti meet, the knife will fall through the bits of spaghetti. Same on an end grain cutting board but on a microscopic level - it'll take years for any "bad" scratches to build up.

    • @TheMerce101
      @TheMerce101 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

      @@headleshydraI think the point is the 5min one is almost disposable. Think how many of those you could build in 5days

    • @headleshydra
      @headleshydra 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +21

      @@TheMerce101 Completely agree - but as a consumer, would you want to be replacing your board every few weeks(if you want it pristine) or few months with normal use to totally ruin it, bits of wood flaking off in your food, and importantly DULLING YOUR KNIVES etc, or would you want a board that after several years of heavy use there's not a mark on it, saving you £100's on knive sharpening(or many hours if you do it yourself) for 10x the price? I know which one i'd want!

    • @headleshydra

    I made a wooden shelf from 3/8” redwood in junior high school and I had a piece big enough for a trivet left over. A few minutes with a wire brush and belt sander and I brought it home. The shelf went by the wayside a few years later, but my mom used that simple trivet for many years (my dad even reglued it when it split), and it was one of a few things I brought home when it was time to clean out my parents house. Sometimes the simple things are the best.

      @@headleshydra scratches from years of daily use would just make it more beautiful anyway, not less. It's a hell of a board, but to not use it would be a tragic waste

    Five minute board, the most hygienic...practical, functional and beautiful as cutting board...a must in any kitchen!
    Five hour board, handsome as a serving board or tray...would make an awesome cheese display tray...
    Five day board, intriguing art work...a lovely mural for an entrance or narrow wall which is also a focal wall...too busy for a cutting board, and the joints that over time may pull loose and hide pathogens...just too risky :)

    • @ninjadudeofficial
      @ninjadudeofficial 19 วันที่ผ่านมา

      End grain is both more hygienic and better for your knife. Actually, there likely isn't much difference on the hygiene front but if forced to I'd bet on that one

    I hate to say it. But I think one of the strips in the 5 day board is upside down. When the whole board is shown at @33:33 the second from bottom strip looks like it’s the wrong way around. You don’t have the defined squares you do at the top because of it.

    I made an edge-glued hickory cutting board. It is more of a butcher block than a cutting board because I keep it next to my stove and it covers virtually the entire side counter. It cost $15 for the wood, just a single 1x6x4’ board. For the steaks I cut on it, it works great. It leaves a slight hickory taste too.

    For a cutting board to use, The simplest one is the best. Cutting boards are a consumable in the kitchen. For wall art, Either of the other two would look good in any kitchen.

    Five minute was the most enjoyable to watch the process, the five day was the most enjoyable result. Have to admit, I am curious to see what you'd be able to make pattern wise if you deliberately f-ed up the pattern of cuts to fill it in with different wood types and then re-cut it to make a snowflake tessellation. probably would take 10 days of glue ups, but would also probably look amazing....or tear a hole in the fabric of reality...
