Suggest running dust collection from a Jackery. Jackeries can charge WHILE discharging, so you don't even have to unplug it to use it. They are available in a variety of sizes for a variety of budgets. You can even charge it up in the apartment, lug out to the workshop, and plug it into a handy power cord. You can, in fact, run a table saw with a Jackery.
I find it interesting that most woodworkers dislike the look of knots. I love them. I think they add a ton of visual interest, and you can do some really cool things with them. My favorite is metal powder and epoxy, though that's pricey and quite a bit of work.

I have this tool, it's absolutely awesome. Shifts a lot of wood when you want it to and smooth enough to easily follow a line. Best of all, it has a single vertical edge to sharpen with a diamond flat file when you need to.

Dude the match fit blade cleaner is a GAME CHANGER. You need to try that before you replace a blade. I just keep Simple Green in it and it takes 5-10 swipes and it's like a new blade.
I think you meant Microjig? Not trying to be “that” guy; just in case anyone goes looking. I have it as well, and love it. I also use Simple green, but keep “Goo Gone” (industrial) separately in case I’ve been working with wet “Big Box Store” softwoods. Cheers!

i was going to suggest a cheap power station or building his own with an lfp battery and a chargerverter like from sungold. either of them could connect to the single 120v outlet and be set to charge at like 500w while he is able to use however amount of battery he can afford i would suggest at min 5kW, 48v being the preferred battery voltage, this way he can power high power tools without stressing his single outlet.
Well, if he had common sense. He would look into a portable generator for extra power. That is what I am having to do until I can get my garage rewired to have the proper power in it that I need

Have you tried a solar generator for more power? There are many available with more than enough capacity to run all of your tools. Most models can recharge from the 15 amp circuit while you are using power from the batteries.
You can also trim the hooves on your cattle with that turbo plane. That tool looks like what the Hoof GP uses, when he's not using a knife. I was a bit surprised you spent so much effort filling in the knots, only to gouge chunks out of the wood. Tuned out very nice in the end. Hope it looks good in your new house!
Congrats on your wedding. You surprised me by your shift to carving. I love it. It's my favorite way of working with wood. I started carving wood using a Trautman carver many years ago. I wish I had one today (they're too expensive and I don't think they would be sold to the general public - like most woodworkers). I did free form carving very similar to what you're doing. Sam Maloof was the first professional woodworker I know to do freeform carving (with a purpose). I thoroughly enjoy the technique and continue experimenting with it today. One thing I'd encourage you to do is to reinforce the joy of sanding freeform sculpture. You get to really see your work come together and become beautiful. It allows you to be able to spend many intimate hours in close proximity to your work.
I wish I had the courage to take so much expensive wood and chew it up like a beaver. But the end result is amazing. Beautiful work, and congrats on your wedding.

I had a bench jointer that looked exactly like that one, but made by Delta back in the day. I did not keep it long. I sold it used and got a regular full size floor jointer and I'm much happier with it.
Sorry to be “That Guy”, but just want people to know that you can’t just “upgrade the breaker”, since the circuit is sized to properly protect the wiring. Instead, you would need to upgrade the wiring of the entire circuit to a larger size BEFORE you can install a higher amperage breaker. Better to just run another circuit if possible, which I understand is not possible for either option in this case.
@@PPedroFernandes The wiring insulation will be identified with the size and insulation type which, in turn, informs of it's maximum amperage rating. Regardless, the vast majority of installations utilize the minimum size wire to handle the load of the circuit, and the maximum size over current protection device allowed for that wire, which is why I made my comment in the first place.
@ A simple fact of residential construction. Any original bid that would include upgraded wire would have been discarded. The best evidence of this is his earlier videos where he stated that when he “ blew a circuit breaker” he didn’t have access to reset it. Any developer that doesn’t have individual breaker boxes is not gonna pay for more expensive wiring

That is one of the reasons circuit breakers became so popular. It is a simple concept, but not a "simple fact" that everyone understands. Also, I completely missed the fact that he doesn't have access to the circuit breaker, which is interesting since the dwelling occupant must have access to all circuit breakers unless access is available to "qualified persons" at all times. Sorry, I don't have my code book with me to refer to the article, but I am certain it is in there.
useful tip, use a block and 80 grit sandpaper to remove the worst of the burnt face that you intend to glue up. Cleaner wood gives for a better grip, while the burnt resins will work against you in the glue up.
I feel you on the heat and cold. My garage is old, has no ac, no insulation, the roof is short and it gets hotter than an oven. I actually just bought a window ac, and I'm building cabinet to place my dust collector in. Progess little by little!!
Typically those apartment garage units have 2 circuits that jumper down the run of spaces. If you can get your neighbor to allow you to run an extension cord from their unit through the rafters over to your dust collector, you can get a second circuit. I had to do this when I was charging my car and running misc tools and dewalt chargers in my garage.

Told you to get the grizzly planer! And I have an old Black &Decker Wood Mate folding work beck that’s perfect for a stand for the bench planer. This bench has a 1-3/4 thick top so you can bolt the planer to it or use the dogs to use it like a wood vice Very handy when you need an extra bench but not have the room for a dedicated work bench
The idea behind hand tools is more about the process and the journey. As well as honing your personal skills in creating something that you can be proud of that you made. Basically it's just much more personal.
While I get that, where does it end? You don't use power tools, instead hand tools, so it's really you who made it. But you didn't make your own lumber. So you gotta make that now too instead of buying it precut. Oh, but you didn't fell the tree, so you gotta do that now too. Oh, but you didn't plant the tree. xD
I have suggested this in the past but since you don't have access to the breaker a solar generator or back up battery system that you can plug into the outlet to charge and provide a buffer system for power draw may prevent you from tripping that breaker.
i have no issue with using power tools over hand tools, but a Sander will not give you the same shimmer and grain detail that a hand plane will, sanding will trap small bits of sawdust inside of the pores of the wood, try face planing and orbital sanding two pieces and put a sealant on both and look at the difference closely, and you will see what i'm talking about
Many years ago I thought I'd challenge everything: why right angles? Why put legs right in the corners? I used organic curves and asymmetry. Same with the upholstery cover. It was practical, like having tiled spots to set drinks down. When I got married, my wife hated it! She said it looked like a bug. I ended up re-using material from it to make very conventional window benches, with perfect right angles and tight flat cushion tops. In pastel colors, no less!
Hand tools allow you to be more accurate when doing shapes. I mean people use jeweler files to finish off reduction gets after the gears were cut by machines to be gear shaped. You compare a gear set finished off with jeweler files vs ones not you’d find the one finished off with jeweler files are quieter, more durable, and more efficient. Hand tools are important because they can do things more accurately than any machine. If you touch a piece of wood to a belt sander you’re taking off a lot of material where if you rub sand paper on wood you’re taking off very little. Power tools help speed up the rough setup but hand tools help where fine details count.
It's about making money. If you fiddle around at home doing stuff for yourself then you can spend 30 minutes sharpening and tapping that planer to get the blade in the right position. But if it's your work then you need to use power tools. And if they had power tools in the past they would have used them in an instant. The only reason why ordinary people can afford something like a carved bookcase or a slab table today is because of power tools. It's about making money and making stuff that is affordable for other than the one percenters.
One thing to assure you achieve your goal is always rest out a new product or whatever you introduce to your tool kit before you destroy your product and have to swallow your pride for making an untested decision. Always test the products on a scrap piece. Best a few square inches than a kitchen floor. Or what matters to you. Best to find out cheaply than expensively. Sanding doesn’t have to be boring. Look at it as fine tuning. I work y stone which has similar properties, working by hand. Power tools are indispensable. And are necessary equipment, plus hammer and chisels. Being hurried can or will cause damage and problems. Take the right amount of time for your level of skill. It always pays off.
Imperfections are the best part of my wood projects. I want them to be mine, besides a knot hole is cool to run a cable or for kids to make believe. Lastly, I don't want my work to look like store bought but hand made
As someone who uses cad often I completely forgot you can't just lazily plug in numbers without cad software. Also, I've gotta get me a contour sander for my die grinder. Looks super useful and I'm not even a woodworker.
for your breaker issue, try to see if one of those portable battery companies sponsor one of your videos, I'm sure one would be enough to run the dust collector on occasion; or can try a UPS for a computer but not sure if it would do it as well........

For that build up on the saw blades have you tried spray on oven cleaner? I would think it's pretty much the same problem. I remember it being recommended for router bits but I haven't tried it.
I guess it's moot now since you're moving, but an EcoFlow style battery bank would have been a great help for your apartment garage. You can let it charge at 15 amps, but pull up to 30 amps from it at 120v. They also have a parallel kit for 30 amps at 240v if you are willing to spring for two units.
My mother was a Fine Furniture maker before retiring. Her creations were pricey, exclusive and beautiful. She used modern equipment and some hand tools. It was really dependent on the piece being created. However, she had a firm belief that using modern tools as much a possible was the only way to go. She said that if sanders, routers and planers were around in the colonial era, the tradesman would have used them. It makes sense doesn’t it?
Have you considered a couple of deep cycle batteries and a mains inverter to run that vacuum for the short periods needed when you would exceed the power from the breaker?.... you would just need a decent automatic charger to keep it topped up for the times when you need it.

TBH in this day and age, if you have issues with trying to run two appliances at once on your low amp breaker, buying a big lithium battery and running one tool off it while you run the other on grid power is probably the easiest solution, if upgrading the electrical service isn't doable. And depending on the complexity of the upgrade and your ability to DIY, it may even be the cheaper option.
As far as your electrical problem brother, i suggest a Generator. i particularly prefer the Predator 5000 from Harbor Freight. Its affordable and its awesome. trust. Did i mention its quiet? Its quiet! Oh, and considering the fact that you are using equations to fit wood, i can guarantee you can learn how to sharpen a saw blade. Frfr. Its fairly simple and all you need is a dremel. Even if you dont do a perfect job sharpening your blade you will not be far off, and promises it will cut much better than it was in the video. Most likely as good as new. with a little practice you will be able to make it better than new. and keep it that way!

No, some of us just like the nostalgia and satisfaction of using hand tools. There is no such thing as an obsolete tool if someone can use it effectively as it was designed to be used. I will agree that those that say you are not a woodworker because you prefer power tools are absolutely incorrect. If you create out of wood, it doesn’t matter what type of tools you use, you are a woodworker. I have owned and do own a large variety of power tools, mostly things like my lathes and table saws from the late 1800’s to the 1930’s and love to use them when the project dictates the need, same with my modern band saw for resawing lumber and my modern drill press which was a gift from my father. But for me, I would have used a plane not the sander but my plane irons are kept sharp and set up properly, same thing with my hand saws, they are kept sharp and would have gone through that board with little effort. Not as easily as a table saw mind you but very easily. So realize that there are those of us out here that are master craftsmen that respect all different methods of working with wood and would like to see you do the same.
I also am working with a 15 amp power to my garage I have to run an extension cord from my mud room in order to run my vacuum and tools …and also shut off my heater while I’m cutting it’s inconvenient but it works… planning to add another breaker this year.
Where is are the arbortech turbo plane and its squirelly comopadre the ball gouge....that was the object of this show? And i got both, they're great. I never use the ball gouge with a side handle. I'm wood cutter and i power carve freeform bowls, as well as rounds, squares and waveforms/frills.
the boards do not stay straight. no matter how much you plane. as long as the tree doesn't dry in the forest without being taken down. And maybe the ones they pull out of the bottom of lakes? We don't have them here.

You proved me wrong. The final product looks great. Just a couple of minor concerns on my part. How does a college educated man not know that horizontally and vertically are words? My other concern is, as an engineer, how have you not used the Pythagorean theorem since middle school and how can you be bad at math and be an engineer? The problem is, you slip so many sarcastic moments into your videos (that's great) that this time I could not tell if you were kidding or not. Love the humor. My family is from Ohio. I use a fingernail brush and Dawn Powerwash. It’s even faster than simple green for me.
And maybe sharpen it before you throw it away? 🙄

I wish I had one today (they're too expensive and I don't think they would be sold to the general public - like most woodworkers). I did free form carving very similar to what you're doing. Sam Maloof was the first professional woodworker I know to do freeform carving (with a purpose). I thoroughly enjoy the technique and continue experimenting with it today. One thing I'd encourage you to do is to reinforce the joy of sanding freeform sculpture. You get to really see your work come together and become beautiful. It allows you to be able to spend many intimate hours in close proximity to your work.
I wish I had the courage to take so much expensive wood and chew it up like a beaver. But the end result is amazing. Beautiful work, and congrats on your wedding.

I think that table would look cool with just the first half powered carved, the other half left untouched. The balance & contrast would be pretty cool & intresting.
I had a bench jointer that looked exactly like that one, but made by Delta back in the day. I did not keep it long. I sold it used and got a regular full size floor jointer and I'm much happier with it.
Sorry to be “That Guy”, but just want people to know that you can’t just “upgrade the breaker”, since the circuit is sized to properly protect the wiring. Instead, you would need to upgrade the wiring of the entire circuit to a larger size BEFORE you can install a higher amperage breaker. Better to just run another circuit if possible, which I understand is not possible for either option in this case.
But... You don't know what the wiring is. The wire might safely handle way more than what the breaker can provide, it's all down to who installed it
@@PPedroFernandes The wiring insulation will be identified with the size and insulation type which, in turn, informs of it's maximum amperage rating. Regardless, the vast majority of installations utilize the minimum size wire to handle the load of the circuit, and the maximum size over current protection device allowed for that wire, which is why I made my comment in the first place.
@ A simple fact of residential construction. Any original bid that would include upgraded wire would have been discarded. The best evidence of this is his earlier videos where he stated that when he “ blew a circuit breaker” he didn’t have access to reset it. Any developer that doesn’t have individual breaker boxes is not gonna pay for more expensive wiring
@@genecarden780 "only uneducated" covers a vast portion of society, as demonstrated by people replacing blown fuses with larger fuses so they don't continue to blow. That is one of the reasons circuit breakers became so popular. It is a simple concept, but not a "simple fact" that everyone understands.
Also, I completely missed the fact that he doesn't have access to the circuit breaker, which is interesting since the dwelling occupant must have access to all circuit breakers unless access is available to "qualified persons" at all times. Sorry, I don't have my code book with me to refer to the article, but I am certain it is in there.

useful tip, use a block and 80 grit sandpaper to remove the worst of the burnt face that you intend to glue up. Cleaner wood gives for a better grip, while the burnt resins will work against you in the glue up.
I feel you on the heat and cold. My garage is old, has no ac, no insulation, the roof is short and it gets hotter than an oven.
I actually just bought a window ac, and I'm building cabinet to place my dust collector in. Progess little by little!!

How can anyone be afraid of something they never heard of? I’m not afraid of anything.
Typically those apartment garage units have 2 circuits that jumper down the run of spaces. If you can get your neighbor to allow you to run an extension cord from their unit through the rafters over to your dust collector, you can get a second circuit. I had to do this when I was charging my car and running misc tools and dewalt chargers in my garage.

The idea behind hand tools is more about the process and the journey. As well as honing your personal skills in creating something that you can be proud of that you made. Basically it's just much more personal.

I have suggested this in the past but since you don't have access to the breaker a solar generator or back up battery system that you can plug into the outlet to charge and provide a buffer system for power draw may prevent you from tripping that breaker.

i have no issue with using power tools over hand tools, but a Sander will not give you the same shimmer and grain detail that a hand plane will, sanding will trap small bits of sawdust inside of the pores of the wood, try face planing and orbital sanding two pieces and put a sealant on both and look at the difference closely, and you will see what i'm talking about

Many years ago I thought I'd challenge everything: why right angles? Why put legs right in the corners? I used organic curves and asymmetry. Same with the upholstery cover. It was practical, like having tiled spots to set drinks down.
When I got married, my wife hated it! She said it looked like a bug.
I ended up re-using material from it to make very conventional window benches, with perfect right angles and tight flat cushion tops.
In pastel colors, no less!

FYI, denatured alcohol will help release hot melt glue. Depending on the glue you use and the material, it may release with almost no effort at all.
Why worry at the start about the imperfections in the wood (except for knots) and then power carve the bejesus out of it?
Hand tools allow you to be more accurate when doing shapes. I mean people use jeweler files to finish off reduction gets after the gears were cut by machines to be gear shaped. You compare a gear set finished off with jeweler files vs ones not you’d find the one finished off with jeweler files are quieter, more durable, and more efficient. Hand tools are important because they can do things more accurately than any machine. If you touch a piece of wood to a belt sander you’re taking off a lot of material where if you rub sand paper on wood you’re taking off very little. Power tools help speed up the rough setup but hand tools help where fine details count.
It's about making money.
If you fiddle around at home doing stuff for yourself then you can spend 30 minutes sharpening and tapping that planer to get the blade in the right position.
But if it's your work then you need to use power tools.
And if they had power tools in the past they would have used them in an instant.
The only reason why ordinary people can afford something like a carved bookcase or a slab table today is because of power tools.
It's about making money and making stuff that is affordable for other than the one percenters.

Always test the products on a scrap piece. Best a few square inches than a kitchen floor. Or what matters to you. Best to find out cheaply than expensively.
Sanding doesn’t have to be boring. Look at it as fine tuning. I work y stone which has similar properties, working by hand. Power tools are indispensable. And are necessary equipment, plus hammer and chisels. Being hurried can or will cause damage and problems. Take the right amount of time for your level of skill. It always pays off.
Imperfections are the best part of my wood projects. I want them to be mine, besides a knot hole is cool to run a cable or for kids to make believe. Lastly, I don't want my work to look like store bought but hand made

Look into a battery box (like jackory), charge it when not there and run your dust collection off that when using the table saw.

for your breaker issue, try to see if one of those portable battery companies sponsor one of your videos, I'm sure one would be enough to run the dust collector on occasion; or can try a UPS for a computer but not sure if it would do it as well........

For that build up on the saw blades have you tried spray on oven cleaner? I would think it's pretty much the same problem. I remember it being recommended for router bits but I haven't tried it.

I guess it's moot now since you're moving, but an EcoFlow style battery bank would have been a great help for your apartment garage. You can let it charge at 15 amps, but pull up to 30 amps from it at 120v. They also have a parallel kit for 30 amps at 240v if you are willing to spring for two units.

I use a mix of hand and power tools. Sometimes the hand tool really is the better, faster, easier option. And sometimes it absolutely is not
My mother was a Fine Furniture maker before retiring. Her creations were pricey, exclusive and beautiful. She used modern equipment and some hand tools. It was really dependent on the piece being created. However, she had a firm belief that using modern tools as much a possible was the only way to go. She said that if sanders, routers and planers were around in the colonial era, the tradesman would have used them. It makes sense doesn’t it?
Have you considered a couple of deep cycle batteries and a mains inverter to run that vacuum for the short periods needed when you would exceed the power from the breaker?.... you would just need a decent automatic charger to keep it topped up for the times when you need it.

Wood usually reacts when you plane it so best to do so just before you do your glueup. The longer you leave it the more likely it is to move on you.

Putting a softstart on both your dust extractor and saw will likely allow you to run both at the same time.
I only use hand tools because most of my shop is dedicated to metal working. That and I find some to be faster, like draw knives
TBH in this day and age, if you have issues with trying to run two appliances at once on your low amp breaker, buying a big lithium battery and running one tool off it while you run the other on grid power is probably the easiest solution, if upgrading the electrical service isn't doable.
And depending on the complexity of the upgrade and your ability to DIY, it may even be the cheaper option.

As far as your electrical problem brother, i suggest a Generator. i particularly prefer the Predator 5000 from Harbor Freight. Its affordable and its awesome. trust. Did i mention its quiet? Its quiet! Oh, and considering the fact that you are using equations to fit wood, i can guarantee you can learn how to sharpen a saw blade. Frfr. Its fairly simple and all you need is a dremel. Even if you dont do a perfect job sharpening your blade you will not be far off, and promises it will cut much better than it was in the video. Most likely as good as new. with a little practice you will be able to make it better than new. and keep it that way!
Surely, if you're going to make a high end object, you would inspect the timber at the yard and choose the lengths you want.

No, some of us just like the nostalgia and satisfaction of using hand tools. There is no such thing as an obsolete tool if someone can use it effectively as it was designed to be used. I will agree that those that say you are not a woodworker because you prefer power tools are absolutely incorrect. If you create out of wood, it doesn’t matter what type of tools you use, you are a woodworker. I have owned and do own a large variety of power tools, mostly things like my lathes and table saws from the late 1800’s to the 1930’s and love to use them when the project dictates the need, same with my modern band saw for resawing lumber and my modern drill press which was a gift from my father. But for me, I would have used a plane not the sander but my plane irons are kept sharp and set up properly, same thing with my hand saws, they are kept sharp and would have gone through that board with little effort. Not as easily as a table saw mind you but very easily. So realize that there are those of us out here that are master craftsmen that respect all different methods of working with wood and would like to see you do the same.
You should try incorporating live edge and drift wood into your projects.
I also am working with a 15 amp power to my garage I have to run an extension cord from my mud room in order to run my vacuum and tools …and also shut off my heater while I’m cutting it’s inconvenient but it works… planning to add another breaker this year.

Wood moves, any board that sits for awhile even after being surfaced most likely will not stay perfectly straight or flat.
Use leveling feet. They work better and are much easier to install.
You could even make your own from wood.

I'm wood cutter and i power carve freeform bowls, as well as rounds, squares and waveforms/frills.
the boards do not stay straight. no matter how much you plane. as long as the tree doesn't dry in the forest without being taken down. And maybe the ones they pull out of the bottom of lakes? We don't have them here.

You proved me wrong. The final product looks great. Just a couple of minor concerns on my part. How does a college educated man not know that horizontally and vertically are words? My other concern is, as an engineer, how have you not used the Pythagorean theorem since middle school and how can you be bad at math and be an engineer? The problem is, you slip so many sarcastic moments into your videos (that's great) that this time I could not tell if you were kidding or not. Love the humor. My family is from Ohio. I was born in Ohio, even though I have lived in Texas for 62 of my 66 years. Must be an Ohio type of humor that I always heard from my dad and his brothers. Keep up the fun videos.
