This is why I watch and this is why your viewership is deserved. Thank you! As to the topic, I recently bought a GoPro Max to start videoing 360 style material. Partly to share and partly to re-experience memories for myself, as I’ve found it truly “takes me back” to some great moments in a way regular cameras don’t. Posting some PHOTOS from the Max has met with a great response. Why? The quality? It’s a tiny sensor!! It’s because of the very wide angles. People see that: The overall VIEW!! Tempted to buy more and wish for more expensive cameras etc, yet the wide view of the GoPro Max gave me RESULTS. It’s the view, what I saw, what I want to share, that in the end counts. Again THANK YOU, for all you do!

I’m so pleased to hear you’ve achieved such a well-deserved milestone! There was much sage advice to take in here, but two things resonated with me the most: Don’t chase specifications, and don’t cheap out on batteries and memory cards. It always amuses me when someone thinks nothing of dropping thousands of dollars on the latest body and the fastest lenses but wants to save $30 on a battery or balks at a $50 memory card. One problem, there's a ton of reviews and info on those bodies and lenses. Not so much on batteries and cards. It's less obvious that that little black cube has major differences at $50 vs $30. And those damn cards are complicated and can be arcane at the best of times with weird acronyms and even worse, changes in the business itself that leaves brand names as just another saleable object.

So much truth there. I’ve spent 5 years of so chasing new gear, ultimately arriving at full frame, 2.8 zooms etc. I’ve learned I mostly ever got new gear to get me interested/stimulated again to go out shooting. This only works to a certain degree. I went cold turkey on new gear, sold useless stuff and honestly barely took any photos for a year. Only then I picked up the camera again and took photos of things I liked - not because I got a new lens or toy. Long story short: stop obsessing over gear, take a break, take pictures of things you genuinely care about (oh and: lose social media. But that’s another topic for another day). Thanks Maarten, great work!

Thank you for such a thoughtful video. As a hobbyist (I am occasionally paid for photography, but I do have a day job), I'm in the position of having extra money for more expensive cameras and gear, but I have to ask if it's worth it. (On the other hand, my dad's hobby was aerobatic flying, so as long as I'm not buying an airplane I'm probably within the realm of reason...) I'd love to buy an R5 when it comes out, and I could certainly afford it, but I could also go back to Taiwan or Europe for the same money! I did recently order a Fuji X-T4 and it felt a little silly given that I already own an X-T3. I decided I can justify the cost in a couple of ways: first, the IBIS might give my old Fuji primes a little bit of new life and that adds some value to gear I already own; second, for those rare occasions that I am paid to take pictures, having a second body isn't a terrible idea; and third, my local camera shop is hurting right now, so a sale helps them.

You richly deserved the praise you get from us all. As a (thankfully retired) teacher I fully understand how difficult it is to do what you do and to do it with apparant ease and facility. So many 'tubers seem to constantly churn out material of the "5 ways to peel a grape" which are at best loosely disguised adverts for vineyard shares. Amongst all that shouty dross you are the cheery voice of calm integrity and commonsense. When I hear "Hey photographers..." my heart lifts and I know I'm in for an intelligent and well-considered chat from someone who knows what they are talking about, a welcome voice of calm amidst the hype. As strictly a hobbyist and casual photographer, I must admit that I think your reviews are the best on TH-cam. Many reasons for this opinion. One is that you stick to the important and practical things about the cameras such as the ergonomics, build quality, image quality, fun factor, and their strengths and weaknesses in real life situations. This, to me, is much more interesting than the rambling itemization of specs and obvious sermons pushing one brand over another. Add to this your pleasant speaking voice and manner of delivery. Last, but not least, you demonstrate over and over with your sample photos what superlative results can be produced with practically any modern camera if used by someone who really knows what they are doing and respects the limitations of their gear. Honestly, I think someone could hand you a Baby Brownie and you would be able to produce great photos with it !!!! Anyway, keep up the good work and congratulations on your reaching 100k subscribers :-)

Now to add to my previous comment, I think you're absolutely right. It's envious to be in a position to be able to buy non essential items if it's a hobby, but for professionals, it's a totally different perspective: it's their money maker, and they need the right tools to do their job. Personally, as it's a hobby, I tend to decide on several factors before buying: if it's something I know is a significant enough improvement on my existing items, if I'm able to afford it (I set a limit), and then I judge if it's something I'm likely to use more if this or that is added to the previous models. Mostly, when I look at the cameras I've got, I've never spent that much on the camera bodies themselves, most of them I got for around 100 Pounds sterling or so. What matters most is the lens/glass. It's worth spending extra money on a good quality lens than less money on a bad one that will never get used because it's awful. That said, most of my work in the last 5 years or so have been on instant cameras....now that's an expensive hobby because the film is so costly!! but I really enjoy it and I've built up a body of work that I'm proud of, and I'm even thinking about starting my own TH-cam channel in French about instant cameras.... I'll think about it because in English there are loads of them but not so much in French language.... (I'm French). Anyway, thank you and well done !

Thats the sweetest most humble thanksgiving in the 1st min !! Makes me smile. U have always been very detailed, very objective.. n that peaceful feeling i might have as though im sitting at the feet of my grandpa who got loads to share.. ha
An additional factor is how easy it is to do the work that you want to do, with the camera.. The D-500 is worth more to me than a D-7100, because it gives me access to controls through buttons rather than through a menu. Just a thought.

Thank you for a clear and succinct comment on price versus value as a factor in establishing relative expensiveness of equipment. It was the process I used when I chose the a6100 as a casual carry around and hiking camera alternative to my Canon DSLRs and L lenses.
You expressed surprise that viewers subscribed and watched more that just an equipment review of interest. Perhaps like me, they like me, find value in comments that might be tangential to the specific feature but useful to the activity generally. A perspective or idea. You provide ideas for thought.

It always amuses me when someone thinks nothing of dropping thousands of dollars on the latest body and the fastest lenses but wants to save $30 on a battery or balks at a $50 memory card. One problem, there's a ton of reviews and info on those bodies and lenses. Not so much on batteries and cards. It's less obvious that that little black cube has major differences at $50 vs $30. And those damn cards are complicated and can be arcane at the best of times with weird acronyms and even worse, changes in the business itself that leaves brand names as just another saleable object.

So much truth there. I’ve spent 5 years of so chasing new gear, ultimately arriving at full frame, 2.8 zooms etc. I’ve learned I mostly ever got new gear to get me interested/stimulated again to go out shooting. This only works to a certain degree. I went cold turkey on new gear, sold useless stuff and honestly barely took any photos for a year. Only then I picked up the camera again and took photos of things I liked - not because I got a new lens or toy. Long story short: stop obsessing over gear, take a break, take pictures of things you genuinely care about (oh and: lose social media. But that’s another topic for another day). Thank you for such a thoughtful video. As a hobbyist (I am occasionally paid for photography, but I do have a day job), I'm in the position of having extra money for more expensive cameras and gear, but I have to ask if it's worth it. (On the other hand, my dad's hobby was aerobatic flying, so as long as I'm not buying an airplane I'm probably within the realm of reason...) I'd love to buy an R5 when it comes out, and I could certainly afford it, but I could also go back to Taiwan or Europe for the same money! I did recently order a Fuji X-T4 and it felt a little silly given that I already own an X-T3. I decided I can justify the cost in a couple of ways: first, the IBIS might give my old Fuji primes a little bit of new life and that adds some value to gear I already own; second, for those rare occasions that I am paid to take pictures, having a second body isn't a terrible idea; and third, my local camera shop is hurting right now, so a sale helps them.

As strictly a hobbyist and casual photographer, I must admit that I think your reviews are the best on TH-cam. Many reasons for this opinion. One is that you stick to the important and practical things about the cameras such as the ergonomics, build quality, image quality, fun factor, and their strengths and weaknesses in real life situations. This, to me, is much more interesting than the rambling itemization of specs and obvious sermons pushing one brand over another. Add to this your pleasant speaking voice and manner of delivery. Last, but not least, you demonstrate over and over with your sample photos what superlative results can be produced with practically any modern camera if used by someone who really knows what they are doing and respects the limitations of their gear. Honestly, I think someone could hand you a Baby Brownie and you would be able to produce great photos with it !!!! Anyway, keep up the good work and congratulations on your reaching 100k subscribers :-)

Now to add to my previous comment, I think you're absolutely right. It's envious to be in a position to be able to buy non essential items if it's a hobby, but for professionals, it's a totally different perspective: it's their money maker, and they need the right tools to do their job. Personally, as it's a hobby, I tend to decide on several factors before buying: if it's something I know is a significant enough improvement on my existing items, if I'm able to afford it (I set a limit), and then I judge if it's something I'm likely to use more if this or that is added to the previous models. Mostly, when I look at the cameras I've got, I've never spent that much on the camera bodies themselves, most of them I got for around 100 Pounds sterling or so. What matters most is the lens/glass. It's worth spending extra money on a good quality lens than less money on a bad one that will never get used because it's awful. That said, most of my work in the last 5 years or so have been on instant cameras....now that's an expensive hobby because the film is so costly!! but I really enjoy it and I've built up a body of work that I'm proud of, and I'm even thinking about starting my own TH-cam channel in French about instant cameras.... I'll think about it because in English there are loads of them but not so much in French language.... (I'm French). Anyway, thank you and well done !

An additional factor is how easy it is to do the work that you want to do, with the camera.. The D-500 is worth more to me than a D-7100, because it gives me access to controls through buttons rather than through a menu. Just a thought.
I fully agree - and it's why it's one of the three factors (wallet, hand, heart) that I feel must be considered before selecting a camera.

Thank you for a clear and succinct comment on price versus value as a factor in establishing relative expensiveness of equipment. It was the process I used when I chose the a6100 as a casual carry around and hiking camera alternative to my Canon DSLRs and L lenses.
