5:54 is the best advice I could give. It was always my top priority, only then I look at specs and only if those are really bad I reconsider my initial choice. A camera isn't only a tool, it's also a lovely little bit (or big chunk) of engineering, haptics, a fashion accessory and an inspiration. I'm still carrying my now totally outdated and slow original x100 everywhere, it's simply so pretty, fun to use and people smile at it. Same with some film cameras. If you love a camera you don't think twice about taking it with you.

Yes, yes & on the mark ! Even walking - with or without my camera - my eye is getting better at ' seeing '. I've gotten serious @ 3 years ago with photography and joined a local camera group ( those that wish go out on Tuesdays to different places to shoot ). I've picked up lots of know how from some of the experienced members. From being in the group I've become acquainted with lots of interesting places that I was before unaware of. I'm very happy with my camera - Panasonic Fz2500 zoom bridge with 24 ~ 480mm ( 960m w i zoom ) It's not an expensive / high end piece of kit - now the price is down to $900 - but it has macro settings for getting close ups, a very good stabilizer for getting distant critters. Last Saturday I got some sharp images of a local man ( Folsom, Calf.) setting a new world record for walking a one inch wide slack line between 2 bridges over the American River ! The Fz2500 has a plethora of features so I'm spending the time to learn / practice with it but I've come to realize that there is a ' lot ' more to photography than the camera. Thanks for this video.

I came to this realisation recently when I suddenly decided to always have my camera with me. I bought a Nikon Df over four years ago and would use it about 9-10 times a year. About 3 months ago I decided I’d start using it regularly. My images started to get better and more so, I started to “see images” in places that I’d pass by regularly on my way to work. It was like someone opening the door to a world that’s always been there but I never bothered to look at. As an added bonus, I feel I’ve got a new camera - simply because, by using it regularly, I’m finding more and more features that I’m comfortable using; some that seemed like gimmicks a while ago. Your words are wise Maarten and delivered in such a calm and eloquent manner. I have subscribed.

I got a a D50 as my first DSLR which I still use for product shots. A few years ago I upgraded to a D7000.I got an Olympus Pen1 because of its size and weight when I travel. Last year I upgraded to an OMD. I have a complete array of lenses for each. Same with video, just upgraded to a new HD camcorder. Not to mention the P&S cameras. When I was young I loved how a phone would slowly absorb all the other devices to the point where we will only need the one. Now though I've started trying to separate out my devices. A simple watch to tell the time, a dedicated camera to take photos. How many times do you go to take a photo, or check the time, only to get distracted by a message.
It's true that fancy new phones can make your photos look fantastic, and may even be better than most cameras at capturing those moments, but looking up to the view finder you are immersed in the scene you are going to take. I've put the camera up to my eye plenty of times and decided I don't want a photo of this scene. Whereas with a phone you're more likely to just snap away, and have a photo library of 1000s of photos you don't need or look at.
    That's why I need a new Camera :D

So true. This is precisely the reason I jumped off the FF/APS-C bandwagon and switched to MFT - the convenience of the camera results in shots I wouldn't get with more bulky gear simply because I couldn't be bothered taking it out; and anyone that says you can't get a good image out of a smaller sensor is really missing the point of photography.

That is a sensible, wise and practical advice. I wish I remember hearing or reading something like that before I changed from a simple, light camera (I shoot mainly candid shots at birthdays and weddings and landmarks) to a "better" and expensive camera that weighs like a brick. I take pride in owning such a camera, but I am sure thru my own fault, the quality of my shots have not improved. I am still trying to know, to learn, to setup the camera at the same time I am trying to learn how, when and what to shoot. This reminds me of an incident long time ago when I was looking thru an album of BW photographs of an elderly gentleman, photos of landscape, landmarks, portraits like what you see in books of legendary photographers, I naively asked What camera he used (this was before the digital cameras), he was kind enough to whisper in my ears, so others in the group will not hear, it is not the camera that is important but the man behind the camera. He must have been using a film camera. As far as I recall he had no studio, he was not a commercial or professional photographer.

Maarten, You make some very useful points in this video. The more time I spend using my cameras, the more I have come to the conclusion that buying good quality used cameras is the best approach,
When someone gets the infamous GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome) this is often a desire to buy the latest-and-greatest camera.
Whilst it may be a nice idea to become an early-adopter of a specific new camera , you do risk buying cameras which are just over-priced but actually add little in-terms of extra useful features.
I prefer to watch the video reviews of TH-camrs such as your good self and await for good quality used examples of a camera to come onto the market.
Keep up the good work !!

I haven't thought to make a focused assessment of either but think it is a perfect next step. Thank you for the sound advice!

I often see the common "gear is not everything" cliche thrown around but understand some equipment will allow you to have greater capability, control and overall better results rather than without. For example, a telephoto lens will get you that shot of the wetland bird and not a kit lens. A wide aperture prime can save you in low light situations and a sturdy well built tripod is night and day difference from one that costs $40.
Gear is gear but the difference is how you can ultimately utilize your gear to the fullest potential before it out grows you.

Thank you Maarten. After many years of trying, my favorite camera and lens are the ones that are most pleasant to use. This means you will probably use it more often and will learn more quickly. Optical quality is overrated. Keep posting videos please.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

That's an excellent way to express the attraction we have for usable cameras. Sometimes it feels as if the product managers and engineers have never actually used a product except in the lab.
As for optical quality, it's not over-rated for everyone, but I agree that most can't/don't see the difference.

It's not about the camera. It's about the lens.. plus light. But most importantly, who is behind the camera. Camera for hundreds of years remains, basically, a light tight box with timing mechanism holding light sensitive substance on which the lens projects an image. When the camera is just an object of desire or symbol of a status, then it's another story that often doesn't include the "story" about photography. Thank you for sharing your knowledge perfectly weaved into common wisdom and exquisitely narrated.

so much wisdom here! I love NEW STUFF. This year has been full of cancel trips and cancel picture taking oportunities. Everynight I look at the sales at B&H and I have the money BUT, as you mention, if there are no real answers to the questions about gear, then there is no NEED for buying things I will not even use. Instead of buying the new F2.8 zoom lense, that money will pay for gas so WE can go to the mountains (when possible) and make memories and not just a new box inside the closet....
Thank you for your videos, I going over them, one more time, since I have the time (summer vacations and I always learn something new). Merci beaucoup !!!

Another great video, Maarten! I don't leave the house without my G7X II. It's so portable, has a large-ish sensor and reasonably usable zoom. One day, I may get another " big" camera, but, for the time being, this fulfils my photo and video needs. And it's still way better than my fairly affordable phone camera. I use the latter for quick snapshots, and the Canon for all " better" photos and videos. If your gear is totally outdated, is good to look for replacements, but going for the latest and greatest all the time will only but your wallet! And you're right _ is about the person BEHIND that camera.

Great video. I must admit that, when looking into a potential future purchase, I am drawn towards used / second-hand cameras.
Here in the UK, there is a good second-hand camera retailer which is just a few miles away. I have made several purchases from the shop (including a used Nikon D700 with battery grip, spare battery, battery charger & 24-85mm lens).
A saved a huge amount of money in comparison to the camera's new price. I bought the D700 in January 2015 and it is still going very well.

Completely agree.... my camera is now nearly 10 years old. Sony A77... bought it when it was launched as my first DSLR. Still use it today and and see no reason to upgrade at all. When I am not carrying it... my iPhone does a good job and that's an iPhone 7 (so in the current world of annual updates it's probably seen as antique) !

I'm so glad I found these videos..like a relaxing chat with a good friend or a favorite uncle. Couldn't agree more..use and value what you have. Enjoy what you have? Great. It's not necessarily the equipment that makes great photographs..it's the operator of the camera. Sure great quality cameras and lenses help. I have three 'older' 35mm film SLR cameras (spanning 1971 through 1982 manufacture) with a collection of lenses that go with them, and a digital camera. Use and enjoy them all. Each has their strong points and just 'fun factor'. What counts for me is the satisfaction I get from the images I get from each of them.

Thanks Maarten for this video, I was so confused by the myriad of opinions and reviews of different camera systems only a couple of weeks ago when I was looking at cameras like the a6400 Sony, Lumix G85, Canon 80D and the Nikon D5600 and as I'm pretty much a newby with digital photography, I knew 3 of these cameras whilst on a wishlist, would be overkill for me. I liked the Nikon D5600 because it was light yet felt like a DSLR and fit my hand nice and snug with features like the more expensive cameras, this camera would keep me learning for a long time to come, in fact, I'm not likely to learn all it can do. A shopping trip to Costco in Sydney seen me hanging around the camera stand and there was 3 Cameras of Interest there including my lust choice Canon 80D with single lens....for around $1600 ...there was also a Canon 800 D with a 3 lens kit for $1700 which I though was good value but the one I chose was the Nikon D5600 with a 18-55mm and 70-300 Nikkor DX lens set and Camera bag for a grand total of $679 Aussie dollars (Costco had sliced $400 off the usual price) I haven't done much with it yet due to my job but this weekend I hope to take it into the City and learn how to drive it.....so even the cheaper Nikon Camera is probably overkill for me.....but really excited to see what I can get out of it. Thanks for your very informative Videos Maarten.

Very good advice. I nearly sprung for a Sony a6400. I have an a5100 I use for a gimbal cam, and I always record separate sound for my video. I really examined what I shoot, and what I plan to do and realized that what I really needed was a 2nd a5100. For about 230.00 USD, I satisfied my real requirement, instead of my perceived requirement that would have cost me about $950 or so.
Very good advice in this video.

Yes it all depends on the person and your advise helped me to realize I am the type of person who takes many pictures - so I need a camera with good battery plus long time for video- and I want to take pictures fast, to not loose that special thing I am seeing. I was going to buy that beautiful camera you reviewed that you need to "open" the lenses, and has no viewfinder and you helped me see that it was not for me. My "only' problem is budget, plus I see that because of it you "marry' with a brand and with a type of camera. So if you get a mirrorless with crop then those lenses would not be good for a full sensor camera... decision is based on this too - as you well have taught us-... many many thanks.

I think all new photographers should be required to make a pin-hole camera, take a series of photos (maybe 25 to 50), and develope those photos yourself (film & prints). The joining of a local camera club might help with advice & darkroom equipment, but simple development and contact prints can be done in a basement or bathroom.
Then, after this learning experience, go out and buy your new camera...you will have picked up many basic tricks by this time, and you will have learned (cheaply) about light, equipment and your personal style.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  5 ปีที่แล้ว

What an interesting approach - thanks for the suggestion, although I'm not sure how much you'll learn about modern cameras or personal style with a pinhole camera.

Yes especially with smartphone hardware. I did not expect them to be this good, this fast. More expensive cameras, just feels, more expensive compared to what I can get from phones.
I like the Ricoh GR III or the Sony a6400 but they don't add much value especially if I will only use them during special occasions. I still have a fine Nikon DSLR, an APSC compact, and a DJI drone.

I'm getting big into motorsport photography. I'm very comfortable with my Nikon D3400 but trying to perfect my panning shots is tricky. What I want to know is when does a photographer's skill outmatch their camera? I'm growing tired of pros telling me you don't need an expensive camera to take great photos. While this may be fundamentally true why are they using cameras like Sony A9 with 400mm f2.8 lens? I feel with fast action motor racing the D3400 isn't able to keep up with my needs. But seeing as I can't find an obvious choice (within reason) I'm holding off from buying something better.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  5 ปีที่แล้ว

It is tricky, but the D3400 is perfectly capable. A faster and longer lens would like be a benefit, unless you can be close to the action. I'm not saying the camera/lens combo can't be better, but it's certainly not essential.
The A9 offers some advantages, like a faster focus and burst mode, which can help, but won't deliver results unless you've got the right shutter speed setting (which will vary) and the right pan technique. Every street has cars passing to practice - do it until you're comfortable.

I sold all my SLRs (FM3, FM2) many years ago -- with the 4 or 5 h-e lenses I had. End of 2018 -- after all those years without a good camera I wanted to photograph more again and decided I needed a better phone (mine was pretty old with a so-so camera). I bought the already somewhat outdated S7 -- for the camera in a reasonable sized phone -- because I have it always with me and the S7 already has a pretty good quality and even allows me to shoot in RAW -- which I use for important pictures or in challenging lighting situations.
I was and still am amazed how great photos one can take with the S7. Even very close-up shots (almost macro) and capturing quick moments with an already somewhat higher frame rate worked quite well. Very important was the quick-launch button to open the camera fast and the precise and quick autofocus and low shutter-lag. I enjoyed the camera (still S7) very much. I posted photos online and people liked the pictures and asked me which camera I used -- all was shot with the S7!
Although after one year of heavily using the S7 and catching many nice photos I felt that I was sometimes missing on the quality (noise level), details, moire effects and mostly I was missing to be able to use other focal lengths and also sometimes the possibility to separate the fore- and background due focus blur. I did not want a large or heavy SLR again. After a bit of thinking about the options I came to Fuji and found a used X-T1 and bought that together with the 18-55 / 2.8 - 4. I found this to be a reasonable compromise in terms of size and weight with still a very high quality and the ability to shoot in low-light conditions (which I do pretty often) due the good sensor and also the great OIS of the lens. Wow, how great to be able to compose also shots with a tele lens or shoot at low light levels handheld with 1/4 or 1/2 second with a good chance of getting a sharp photo. Doing many landscape shots, after some months with the 18-55, I also wished to be able to get wider when the scene calls for that in some situations. Bought a 14 mm second hand as well. That's a good fit, because of also using the same filter diameter and even the same lens-hood as the 18-55. I immediatly fell in love with the new wide-angle options (in my film times the widest angle I had was 24 mm). The 14 mm allows me to take pretty normal looking potos as well as really dramatize with fore- and background relations when I choose to to so! _But_ after two months with the 14 mm lens and the 18-55 I wished to be able to choose the wanted angle quicker and started to think about a second body. Would have liked an X-T2 or X-T3, but found the price (and also increased weight) not in a good relation to the gained extra options. I was lucky to find a very low-priced second-hand X-T10 -- very good fit as a second body to the X-T1 with largely the same usage and of course the same sensor. I really love that light-weight and small body option (only real downside is the viewfinder which isn't as good suited for the use with glasses -- but it's o.k. as a second body). I also added a Peak Design 5l sling bag for quick access of the two bodys with the two lenses attached and I'm a very happy camper now. The cameras XT-1 with the extra handgrip, the X-T10, the two lenses , some batteries and the bag have costed me only 1260 Euros -- what a bargain for the great options I have now and enjoy to use almost daily. And indeed, when I think about the times when I needed push-processing of films up to 6400 ISO, the cost and time attached and the inflexibility due deciding for a specific ISO and which film- and color-type, I now feel almost in wonderland with the high quality and the before-shot visualization of the final picture. I am not missing the film-times (except that I could shoot without any battery for months, if I wanted / needed).
Nowadays I decided deliberatly not to get into longer tele-lenses. In my Minolta and Nikon times I had up to 250 mm, but used everything above 105 mm rarely. I find tele-shots in general often boring (of course there are great tele-shots as well!). This decision has saved me quite some money, but more importantly it saved me lots of weight and even when I now bring the "full kit" it's still not too heavy and I do not hestitate to take it with me most times now -- I can even cycle for hours without the bag hurting me. I try to follow the guide from Gallen Rowel and keep it pretty simple and lightweight -- to be able to get more out and get more and better chances for good photos. I sometimes might add my trusted table-tripod (oooold Slik Mini Pro) as a (chest) support for low-light shootings with the 14 mm lens without OIS and I will rarely bring a larger tripod as well -- but only for long-time exposures and the like. So I fully support your device! :-)
Nice video -- the first one I have watched from you.

Glad I still use film. I don't have to worry about new cameras every few months. Nice one Maarten.

While you do make a good point, digital can be liberating as it allows you to take dozens, hundreds, thousands of images without worrying about the cost - and it allows you to see the results immediately enabling you to perfect the image.

Maarten, you are so right. I suspect that I'm just like you, with 52 years of stills photography. I've learned that cameras are very specialized instruments - no one camera can do it all. I have a Canon 6D that is unexcelled for portraits and lots of general subjects with just the 24-105 and 135/2 lenses. If I were still shooting events primarily I would opt for the Fuji X-T20 with 18-55, a magnificent choice though not at all glamorous anymore. Of course for video it would be the Sony A7III. The point is, I'm happy doing my work with the right humble tool. If my work changes I'll consider moving some gear around but not till then. It's making pictures that makes me happy, not the contemplation of the "best" gear.

Thanks for sharing those thoughts, it is the pictures that should bring satisfaction, but for many it is just the ownership of the "latest" or "best" tool.

For most people it's pure GAS - which is fine as long as you have the spare money to spend on unnecessary stuff. If your current camera lacks something that would make your life a lot easier or if the camera doesn't fit your needs (anymore), then go for a new camera. Individual needs change over time and maybe even the kind of pictures you're taking. Don't bother what other people say is the best camera for xyz - it's about you not them. You can happily do street photography with a medium format camera if you're willing to carry that kind of a bigger camera - and if you have the spare money.
Basically: there's hardly any terrible camera out there anymore. I can't think of any camera from one of the bigger brands from the last 3 years that was actually bad. So at the end of the line it's just about which camera fits your budget and makes you happy.
So just don't do too much research, because you will question everything in the process of making the best possible purchase. Get an overview of the market, make sure that the firmwares have no serious bugs and that there's no feature missing you're looking for, then go to a shop and try it out. Don't watch/read dozens of reviews, it's not about their opinion. Color science is mostly bs unless you restrict yourself to JPEGs only, micro contrast, absolute sharpness dynamic range and so on, none of it makes a good picture.

The feature of a new camera is just an app.
My first camera from the 80s did have manual focus mode after the single and continuous AF mode. It also allowed me to have shutter priority. And aperture priority. And full program mode. And matrix, centre-weigted and point mode for exposure.
It also gave me AF-priority modes by a switch. Single - continuous and manual.
If we think about it - the digital sensor gave us only two gifts. 1) The ability to change ISO and white-balance between shots rather than between films and 2) The histogram.
In terms of how photography works - it is still the same as in analog times. We even had TTL.
Photography is physics. This is why lenses are more interesting than camera bodies.

It’s better to wait. D850s now selling for $2,600, X-T2s for $698, etc. Sometimes, though, it would be impossible to wait. Like the Nikon D760 with hybrid sensor! And then D860 with hybrid sensor! Who would be able to wait?

There will always be a price reduction, and a better camera if you can wait.

A good moment on a bad camera can be cherished, but a normal moment can be made better on a great camera. I think that's primarily why people choose better camera's, to make the mundane look good. A little flower in the grass on the side of a sidewalk might not make for a good photo. But throw a macro lens on a good camera, get some nice background blur in there, and that mundane everyday thing can look neat. Of course a good camera can make good moments even better too. I think the real issue is if you aren't dedicated to bringing a camera around with you, then you probably should stick with the smartphone.
