@@anupmalla88 While it may be possible to make a determination based on specific models, as a brand each has too many models to provide that kind of overall judgement.
Hi.@@MaartenHeilbronI have been a Fujifilm user for few years, using the old model XT-1. Is it wise to upgrade my old XT-1 to the new, more capable X-S10? Your opinion please. Thank you.
In Maarten we trust. Objective and yet subjective first look at this new camera. The stuff we need to know. Pros and con for us to make up our own minds about. Thank you Sir for this clear and common sense introduction. Your reviews are ace and you have become a legend. The go to youtuber for an honest informative review. Thanks!
@@MaartenHeilbron It's a REALLY great way to distill what potential buyers will like and dislike. This is my favourite review that you've done yet! "Loved" ;-)
I *love* your videos! I have an XS10 due on my doorstep literally any minute now and so I’ve been watching your videos and now I feel like I have a head start on the learning curve. I can’t imagine the effort that goes into organizing all this knowledge and then communicating it so effectively. We are all in your debt.
Best S10 review TH-cam at the moment, most reviewers omitted mentioning function of dials. Love and hate a bit strong but good click bait. I’m an xr4 user.
First video ever seen of you and I must say your voice and manner of talking is throughly enjoyable. It definitely falls in the love column along with how thorough and detailed you handled this preview. Thank you.
Dear Maarten, May be you will read this comment. May be not. In case you do, just know there are tons of us out here, always happy to listen to you. I think I have watched almost all of your reviews, even on gears that I am sure of not buying them in a foreseeable future. Here is the point: you reviews and videos are informative, educative, inspiring, sensible, and of course, lovely. Its a pleasure to watch your works. Always And did I mention the love and hate thing? Wonderful...Loved every bit of it. So, for your interesting presentations...love! And for....., well, there is nothing to hate really.. Excellent.
Thanks for the videos! There are so small amout of people using fujifilm in my country, so I’m watching your videos, and it helps a lot! Love from South Korea.
Maarten, I've just discovered you due to my trusty 6 year old X-T1 dying on me last week! I somewhat rashly went out and bought an X-S10 without any real research! I'm not a pro but have a decent following on IG and an upcoming print show the summer. I'm also just realizing that what I thought was a brand new Fuji is a year old already! I've never responded to one of these talks before, but you are refreshingly mature and calm compared to the young upstarts! I had developed a limited but reliable technique with the X-T1, basically everything manual, but now am in shock from all the options and the "hated" need to go back to menus, the lack of which is what led me to Fuji! I've never owned a DSLR but fell into photography shooting moths on flight during a plague of Gypsy Moths in upstate New York. My Canon G9 and later, G15 was all I had. So there seems to be too many options here, for my old technique to even function! ( I am also a musician having similar problems with the music software that I opted for to make my 2nd album in Covid isolation!) Too many choices!
Thanks for your kind words. The one thing I'd miss is the physical focus switch (maybe the meter mode collar). Otherwise, I'm a fan of the X-S10, and Fujifilm has not yet replaced it with a newer model.
Where does it leave the X-Tx0 line though? I can’t really imagine Fuji releasing an XT40 next spring which inherits most of the XT4 features again and the only significant difference being the dials...
Look forward to seeing your full review of Fujifilm SX10. Especially to the performance of dynamic range, focusing and exposure in Video. Thanks Maarten Heibron!
I started watching your full review of this camera, but decided to take your advice to watch this one first. I always look forward to hearing what you have to say; thanks so much!
@@MaartenHeilbron By the way, right now, I'm watching one of your "Oldie but Goodie" videos regarding the Sony RX-10 Mark IV. I'm still shooting with the original RX-10 (I guess they call it a "legacy") Anyway, I found your discussion of the IV, actually pretty useful; plus I share your love-hate relationship with Sony's crazy menu layout. Nevertheless, despite its limitations, my camera has given me many years of use. A while back, I talked with you about upgrading to the XT-4, but decided it was too expensive. The X-S1 seems like it might be a better fit for my budget. Again thanks for replying to me so quickly!
I love your style, calm, precise and to the point. Great way to totally up or approach from a love or hate perspective. I also love that sweater as well. Keep up the great work. I might have missed this but is their a separate switch for video and stills like the xt4 that will keep your settings. The Iso button on top is a nice touch.
Thanks for the kind words. I'm keeping the sweater though, I bought it at the Bastille market in Paris. Video is one of the positions on the mode dial, but yes, stills and video settings are independent.
I wondering how is your dials/buttons setup? It has 2 less dials than XT3/4. The front dial is aperture, rear dial is EV. ISO has a button. That means the left dial will be either Film Sim or SS. When using the manual lens, which button better for focus zoom?
No shutter duration on the left dial. You don't need a focus zoom button - just turn on focus check and the image punches in as soon as you turn the focus ring. So far, I've had to reassign WB to the video record button, otherwise that's a menu dive.
Which kit lens ? Thank you for your preview of the X-S10. Apologies if this question has already been covered. As the X-S10 has IBIS am I paying an unnecessary premium for the F/4 16-80mm with OIS. Am I better off putting that $$$ towards a non-OIS lens with a lower max aperture such as the 16-55 f2.8. Main genres are landscape, portrait & architecture. Appreciate the extra versatility of the 16-80 in ONE lens. Thank you for your thoughts Paul
It appears that the X-S10's viewfinder is the same as those on the X-T30 and its predecessors. As a glasses wearer I have struggled with the small size, round shape and "hard" surround on those cameras compared to those on the X-T1/2/3/4 and X-H1models. How have you found it (assuming that you wear glasses when using the v/f)?
I agree, pushing your glasses into the viewfinder is awkward and limits the field of view. Personally, I adjust the diopter to my prescription and flip my glasses up while shooting.
God, you are just the best, most informative, easy to watch reviewer! Thank you for all that you do. I personally would love to own this camera buy financially it’s probably not gonna happen (=. You did however sell me in the x-h1! What an amazing camera it is! Thank you so much!
Loved, subscribed and enjoyed your great work of presentation ! One little question though : what about this shutter button, is it as sensitive as the one the X-H1, or is it still a X-T's version with the half-position focus lock ? Thank you very much Maarten.
The X-H1 does seem to be an outlier - but there is a fix if you. can get it to a Fujifilm repair depot. The X-S10 requires the standard pressure to release, I haven't accidentally triggered it yet.
@@MaartenHeilbron, not quite what I asked. Maybe my question was miswritten... I was wondering if it had the half-position locking system, or if it was like the X-H1 a light switch shutter button. Nothing was wrong with my X-H1, everyone can tell its shutter button touch is different than the ones on the XT series.
@UCcr0eYDUCpH5pFjFCq4j6EA Maybe my answer was not clear. The X-S10 is like other X-T cameras. However, you have misinterpreted the action of the X-H1. It does, in fact, have a half-press position, it's just very sensitive. That sensitivity can (now) be adjusted at a Fujifilm repair shop.
@@MaartenHeilbron, now I understand perfectly what you wrote ! :-)) I didn't know X-H1 could be adjusted. Partly sold mine because I wasn't fan of its (too) light touch. But this X-S10 looks like its best replacement (for me). Thank you so much Maarten !
Hi, Love your delivery. I started out on a XPro one after memories of my mums old Agfa. Fuji reminded of the old cameras. When through X pro one, Xt1, Xt2, XPro 2, Xt3, X100T,F,V, XE range. Then i discovered sony and jumped to mirrorless. As my skills developed I went away from the dial, old school style and worked as a pro for a few years. Recently I picked up the Xs10, I have to say I think Fuji have nailed it to a large degree, I think most photographer like the idea of all the dials but in reality just want to keep their eye in the viewfinder whilst adjusting settings. This Fuji is a nice marriage of old Fuji and more modern dials. The biggest thing I love about this camera is the feel in the hand. It’s such a nice thing to hold. I think for the money its a great choice. You can customise this thing to work just so. I love this camera and I can’t wait to see what they do with both updates and new versions once they get all the customer feedback., Well done Fuji, A for effort.
Now my XH-1 feels dated, but hey IBIS and Log! I bought one a few months all thanks to your reviews and tutorials, have been enjoying Fujifilm cameras ever since. Quite a unique style of presenting the pros and cons too. Your Fuji vids will always be my faves, keep it going sir and take care!
I love how you're always the Go-To when it comes to relatively short but in-depth menu break-downs. You always find something that others may have missed to mention and that's highly useful. But I love their content too. What do I hate? At the risk of sounding unconstructive, I hate nothing about Maarten's work. :)
Dear Maarten Heibron, I would be grateful, if you would tell me whether the Fujifilm X-S10 supports the ‘high-speed sync flash’ or not. Would you talk this feature (High Speed Sync Flash) in your coming review? I really look forward to seeing your review of this camera very soon. Thank you!
Yes it does. Flash is not one of my areas of expertise (or interest I guess). Although I'm already over 30 minutes (and nearly done) I'll add that note.
The 10 imaginary college students who used this video as a drinking game for every time Maarten said "love that" or "Hate that" have now been added to the liver transplant waitlist. Thanks Maarten - I could maybe ignore the lack of WR or the smaller viewfinder on this model , maybe even the lack of "proper" exposure dials but without the AF switch it's not right for me - And thanks because your video was the only one I've watched today that mentioned all those and the missing C1-C7 etc - most other reviewers didn't even seem to notice them
yeah, kinda the same here. hadn't heard and didn't notice missing AF lever on front and while i think i would like having c1 -c4 on top dial c-5 to c7 gone might make me sad. on the other hand that grip seems very nice. Like the grip on my X-h1 over the x-t3. and just bought a used x-20 but man that's small. which is why i gotit. so there's just no pleasing me.
Thank you for the excellent "high level" (in depth compared to other reviewers) review. Thank you so much for your last comments and stay safe too. I have this camera on order and will be trying it out soon ... my first Fujifilm...
I want to thank you again for such a detail review...I know it is a lot of work. Mr. Heilbron you are one of the best reviewers. I always look up for you when it comes to Fuji cameras.
We do appreciate your reviews, they border on user guides rather than reviews, one question that is maybe unfair to ask, for the best quality images would you recommend a full frame sensor camera over aps-c or M4/3?
Great review, thanks. Prefer the “pure” Fuji approach of the XT series (all manual controls, no PASM dial), but I can see that it will appeal to a new group of Fuji shooters.
Nice preview, but I can't find anyone mentioning, how you zoom in during image playback, touch screen is the only option, or there is some other trick, thanks? X-Tx cameras use rear dial click in to accomplish it.
I am down to 3 choices for my first interchangeable camera for travel, landscape and street photography; Nikon Z50, Fuji xt30 or Fuji xs10 (18-55 mm lens)and Canon Eos RP. Kindly recommend Maarten. Thank you.
Hello Maarten. I appreciate your scholastic and tasteful presentations. As a follow up to our earlier exchange, would you please advise on choosing between X-S10, X-T30 and X100V (with weight and price being important considerations)? [Note: I used to have a nice Canon camera several years ago.] ### Usage: Indoors Outdoors (e.g. markets, hikes) Bright and low light Food Nature People (family, friends, folks at a conference). Work - less frequent (macroscopic biomedical imaging and digital photography in pathology). ### Please advise.
I think you should do this style of overview video for all cameras along with in depth reviews. Also would love to see ergonomics section on all cameras. I personally cannot try any fuji camera where i live and grips on xt3/xt30 are mystery to me if they are comfortable for me. I buy cameras based on grip, and some minimum basic functionality.
What a lovely and thorough technical review! Extremely helpful - I just purchased the X S-10 as a catchall content creation machine. I'm definitely in over my head, but I'm gonna work at it til my memory card is full and my battery is empty!!!!
Love to know what the viewfinder is like. Is it the same smaller size of the XT30? I have an XT2 and don't shoot as much as I use to and this looks like a nice upgrade instead of the XT4 but if the viewfinder is tiny that is a dealbreaker for me. Thanks
Maarten help! I have 6 days to return my new X-T30 and 18-55 kit lens. Do I make the switch? I’m learning general hobby photography and I shoot product and automotive showcase videos. I have a Ronin SC for stabilizing my video. What I love about the X-T30 is the build quality and size (although I had to add a grip plate to make it comfortable and that increased the size a bit). I would love to hear your thoughts on making the exchange.
@@MaartenHeilbron thank you very much for the reply. I think I already know that I should switch but these Fujis have so much charm and character that I’ve already become attached to the X-T30 in just two weeks with it. Hopefully I feel the same affection for the X-S10!
@@blueridge8992 Well then, unless there's a specific benefit that you're desperate to have, the X-T30 is a fine camera. On the other hand, this is the right time to make that decision.
@@MaartenHeilbron I set up the exchange and I really appreciate your replies. My biggest concern is the build quality of the Chinese-built X-S10 but I feel like you would have mentioned it if the camera felt abnormally low quality for a Fujifilm offering. Either way, my girlfriend made the excellent point that I can always pick up another X-T30 second hand in the future if I still miss it. Now I just have to occupy myself until November 19th haha.
@@blueridge8992 I would suggest that the name Fujifilm on the camera far outweighs the Made in cable. I'm sure they have stringent quality controls. There may be other reasons to avoid things made in China, but quality shouldn't be one - at least not with a reputable brand.
Hi, I'm looking for advice . first let me say that I have had and sold Nikon D600 and D800. anyway I bought a Fuji X-e3 and love it. I thinking of buying an X-S10 and wonder if I will think Why did I do it . I do like low light shooting !! love not hate this video !!
Thanks for the kind words. I thought the X-E3 was a nice camera - what is no longer satisfying you? (I think there's a very good market for used models).
@@MaartenHeilbron I guess I was hoping the s10 might have a better sensor or be better in lowlight but not just because of ibis, I think I don't want to spend $999 and feel that it isn't an improvement over the e3 !! once again you do a very nice easy to understand review !
First time on your channel. You are one heck of a presenter. I am amazed at how long you can keep it all together on a single take. Anyways... I have the X-T30 (love) as well as the X-T100 (hate). However, on the X-T30 it is not possible to record a movie with a remote and use an external mic at the same time. It seems that it is one or the either but not both. How is it on the X-S10? And any way around my problem on the X-30?
There is a very, very faint motor/fan noise which I can hear only when I put my ear to the lens, not when shooting with the viewfinder. It does not seem to be related to either the focus engine or stabilization.
Hi Marten , am not fishing for mistakes but i think on 11:41 you meant 23mm f1.4 NOT the f2 . The f2 doesn't have a clutch to focus manually. Love from Saudi Arabia yes you do have fans there.
Good catch. Sorry about that, I was in a hurry to get it done - the script was right, but I. mis-spoke. And please do say hello to all my fans in Saudi Arabia.
@@MaartenHeilbron I'm a stills shooter and therefore the video features don't impress me. I've been a nikon fx dslr shooter for years but I love my x-t20 more than the big guns. I think a used x-t2 is my best option. May use the left over cash for the lower end primes. That's what my head tells me. The heart ofcoruse wants the new shiny things... Haha.
@@MaartenHeilbron just pulled the trigger on an x-t3. Mainly purely a stills shooter. Used x-t2 are selling around 900 Australian dollars. Got an x-t3 for less than 1300 thanks to rebates. Decided to take the x-t3 over the new one because of the layout. Thanks again mate. Your videos are very informative. Will go back and binge on all the x-t3 ones now... 😊
Hello Maarten, Enjoyed the succinct review. I agree with the others that the "love/hate" scoring is useful, even for things that some of us might disagree on. It captures the highlight features very well. As an eyeglass wearer how well can you see the full view in the EVF? I know I should really go to a camera store to compare this (or the similar viewfinder of the X-T30) with the X-T4. I like the size of this, but wonder if I just might be swayed by the larger EVF of the X-T4! (Enough to spend the extra bucks and settle for the extra weight!)
I flip my glasses out of the way when using the viewfinder, the diopter can handle my prescription. With glasses, there's a bit of peering around to see the whole image.
Hi Maarten, thanks for the detailed review. I think you mistook the 23mm f/1.4 for the f/2.0, though. The f/2 doesn't have a manual focus clutch and is smaller than the lens shown in the video. Anyway, I got a question: How did the handgrip feel with somewhat larger lenses like the 16-80mm f/4 (or even larger, if you have tested it with any)? Is there still enough space between the grip and the lens for "average-sized" fingers? Thanks, Timo
You are correct, sorry was in a hurry. It's fine with the 16-80 (the one I'm holding in the video) but the XF16-55 is just slightly too big - I can get my fingers in, but they're right up against the lens. I think my fingers are pretty average.
Great review, Maarten - snappy & pointed. The X-S10 seems to win on the big specs and even many lesser ones, but for me it falls down on some details. I don't actually mind the lack of an ISO dial, a shutter speed dial, and an exposure compensation dial. I don't mind the design of the body. In fact, I love the big grip - finally! The older battery is OK with me, as I have many of them. But I don't like the lack of the focus mode dial on the front of the camera, the relatively low-res LCD, the middling EVF with its short 17.5mm eyepoint (I wear glasses always), the restriction of the C1 to C4 custom modes to stills only, and (very picky now) the lack of screw threads for a decorative shutter button. But most annoying is that the front and rear control dials can't be customized to work the way all my other Fuji cameras work. This seems like a real misstep. At first I was pretty sure I'd pre-order the X-S10. Now I'm not so sure. In fact, I doubt it.
Thanks - "snappy and pointed" - I appreciate the kind words. Yes, for those of us who are familiar with other Fujifilm models, this might not be the right choice.
@@MaartenHeilbron Upon further study, I've decided to purchase an X-S10. I've watched and read a bunch of reviews, including yours, and I've studied the user manual. I did my usual written analysis of pros and cons. One of my biggest concerns was whether I could set up the camera to be ergonomically efficient and not too different from my other Fuji cameras. While I won't be able to use the front command dial for ISO as I do with other Fuji cameras, I can assign ISO to one of the rear buttons, which should suffice. Given the number of programmable buttons (plus the Fn dial), I believe I can set up the camera to work for me. In fact, I've already decided how to customize those controls! Although I made a sizable list of cons for the X-S10 (ranging from larger issues down to every little annoyance), none of them are fatal and the pros outweigh them. I need another camera like I need a hole in the head, but that's another story. I'm buying an X-S10.
Loved this review. I'm a Nikon crop DSLR user but was planning on switching to mirrorless as I'll be doing hybrid shooting. Fuji makes amazing crop sensor cameras but is it viable if there's no full-frame option to upgrade to in the future?
Great review. Please recommend cameras for 4k video under $1500 with lens for TH-cam videos. Is the XS10 better than Sony A6X100 for same price range? Need the side screen that does not obstruct Mic, reliable auto focus, 4K at 24fps without crop. If we were to get one lens for videos, what would you suggest and will the standard XF 18-55 work best? Thanks much !
Everyone would love to have a camera that you describe. Not yet. Both of those are good choices. Generally, for vlogging you’ll want a wide lens. the 18-55 is a good choice for this camera. Not sure why you’d shoot 24fps for TH-cam (just about every display will convert it to 30fps) or why crop would be an issue.
@@MaartenHeilbron Thanks. Can an old 18-55 from my Nikon D3200 be used on a Fujifilm XT3 or XS10? I apologize about my ignorance. Is XT3 still better for video compared to XS10?
@@mveedu994 There may be an adapter, but it will likely only let the lens work in fully manual mode for both exposure and focus. Yes, the X-T3 is superior to the X-S10 for video, as it offers a higher data rate.
Hi Maarten, I wonder if you can help. I took photos with Fujifilm xs10 using FINE+RAW image quality. Then I copied photos to my Macbook Air using USB CARD READER as connection mode. Now when I open Apple Photo app each photos has JPEG+RAW shown on it. After that I wanted to use Fujifilm X Raw Studio to edit RAW photos. I changed Connection Mode on my camera to USB RAW CONV/BACKUP RESTORE, then connected camera to Macbook using cable, opened X Raw studio, but I cannot see any RAW photos. I must have done something wrong, but don't know what. Can you help? By the way, Raw Recording on my camera is switched to LOSSLESS COMPRESSED. Thank you so much for you assistance/guidance!!!
X-RAW studio does not import images. You have to import them to your computer first, and then open them with X-RAW. You do have to have your camera connected to use X-RAW, so this is misleading.
Liked. Subscribed. Thanks! 65 year old buying first camera. Pics of grandkids, pretty golf course holes, TH-cam videos playing some songs I’ve written…okay to start with this camera, or save up some more for the X-T4?
Im having a hard time picking between the x-s10 and lumix g90/95. This seems to have more futures and is newer but from what i saw Fuji’s ibis is not on par with Panasonic. Looking to shoot more videos then photos. Would like your opinion cheers
Love your videos. For a person migrating from mobile due to low image quality, which mirrorless camera would you recommend for stills and video with ease of use and good low light performance. I intend to buy for casual use whenever I travel and also to make TH-cam videos in the coming future. Thanks
Great video! Thanks Maarten. I am an X-T3 owner myself and sometimes feel it’s too much of a camera for me. I am mainly into Street photography and Travel. For both I use the X100V or Ricoh GR II with a lot of joy, due to the size and photo quality. But having also an interchangeable lens Body around gives me the flexibility that I sometimes need. The size of the X-S10 together with the more simpler, automatic orientated design is very appealing. Which one would you recommend for travel, street, and occasional portraits shooting? Can’t wait for the full review! Thanks again! Goed gedaan! 👍🏻
Veel bedankt voor uw vriendelijke commentaar. Lots of factors, hard to find the right combination to suit those requirements. For a small travel camera, I actually preferred the X-E3. Should finish the full review in the next few days.
Hi Maarten, when paired with a 16-55, I'm wondering if you think there is enough space/clearance for the hand? I have used an XT30 with 16-55 and I imagine having a deep grip on XS10 would feel much better. However, based on camerasize.com comparisons, I am not quite sure there is much space between the lens and the grip when paired with a 16-55. I suppose it depends on hand size (my fingers are small/slim). Wondering if you tried putting a 16-55 on it and how it felt? Thanks, love your videos and tutorials!
It is not a menu option, it's a driver you install on your computer. Then connect the USB cable and set the connection mode to X webcam (manual p. 237)
Great review, clear pros and cons, and very well explained. Thank you for that. I’m trying to decide between the XS10 and the Sony a6600. Do you recommend one over the other? You mentioned that you have family in the Netherlands. I’m Flemish, so feel free to answer in Dutch ;)
Always nice to hear from viewers in The Netherlands, but I'll reply in English - even though I do still speak a few words of the language of The Netherlands. They are both excellent choices, without some more specific information about your intentions or your practice, it's hard to recommend one over the other.
Well, I currently have a Fuji XT1 with 5 lenses, so I already spent quite some money on the x-mount system. I mainly use my camera with the Fuji 35mm 1.4. I love the image quality, but I find the autofocus terribly slow compared to other cameras I had before. Every reviewer says that the weak point of the XS10 is autofocus, but it should certainly be a lot better than the XT1, no? The main reason why I would choose the a6600 is the brilliant autofocus system (especially animal eye autofocus). It would be easier to stick with Fujifilm since I already have quite some gear, but I’m worried that the camera itself would not be a big upgrade over the XT1 in terms of performance.
Thank you Maarten for the video. I am looking for a compact and lightweight camera and i wanted to know if X-S10 meets this requirement. I need a camera that i can pack in my bagpack and travel. I have a X H1 which is a bulky one.
@@MaartenHeilbron Yes i will wait for the full review because i do not want to spend too much on gear. I am a cautious buyer and would want to have a equipment which meets my needs of Photography which is out-door / street photography and clicking portraits including shots in low lights.
Thanks for the review. You are an excellent expert. So far I have had a Canon EOS 70D and a camcorder. I don't want a big heavy camera in nature anymore and not two devices. I'm looking for a good camera solution that makes great photos and videos. Would you recommend Fuji X-S10?
Thank you for this detailed list! Your "hates" don't mean much to me. I'm going to be using this to shot my first feature film this June. I appreciate this!
Hi Maarten, I'm convinced by this video and am getting this camera. Thank you for your review. The kit lens options available are 16-80 and 18-55. In your expertise, which would you advise one to opt for?
Hi Maarten, thanks for the video. It is very informative, as always. My wife has an X-A7, and I am looking to get a new camera for myself that will last me for awhile (from an old Nikon D80 system). We are looking mostly to take photos of our very young (and fidgety) kids/family photos, etc. Having reviewed the X-S10 and the others, I was wondering if you would recommend waiting for the X-S10/body only (1499CAD), or a Sony 6400/16-50 (1300 CAD) or an X100F (now 980CAD)? Much appreciated!
Thanks for the kind words. They're all good choices, I'd probably pay a little more attention to the lens. In general, I find the Fujifilm lenses to offer better quality, whether you're choosing a prime (like the 23mmF2) or a zoom like the 18-55).
I was intrigued by the SX10 until I saw this. Thinking of upgrading from XE1&2 but the over complexity and expense of cameras today puts me off. Your last words “You don’t need a new camera......” made so much sense. I want to enjoy my photography, not stand around wondering what to do with the technology, as good as it might be. Thanks, love your videos, really helpful.
Always nice to know that I've helped make a decision. It should not be the complexity that influences your decision - it should be the increased functionality and a determination as to whether or not that will improve your images.
It seems fair to say that you have a love/hate relationship with this camera. Such powerful emotions betray a stronger affinity to the art of photography than I could ever muster.
Hi Maarten, thanks for your insight and Tipps! Did you by chance test how digital image stabilisation affects video quality both 4k and FHD? DIS is very important to me to replace smartphone filming for travel and family stuff producing higher quality and having more joy in operating a camera.
@@MaartenHeilbron the videos are great! You did cover so many things that the image stabilisation part was just one short item on your list. What I did not find out is wether the digital image stabilisation does somehow affekt the overal image quality - because of the crop it needs to somehow expand the smaller image capture to the original 4k or 1080p resolution. So tecnically it should be worse but I could not notice on youtube. Did you?
Hello! Great review but seeing all of these videos on my recommended page has been leaving me with one big question. With the price of the x-t3 coming closer and closer to that of the x-t30 and now the price of this new x-s10, which would you recommend? The X-T3 or the new X-S10 and why?
The X-T3 is for several reasons, including better video features with higher bandwidth; more physical controls; easier handling, the best of these three.
@@MaartenHeilbron That's what I was thinking. I just find it strange that all of these cameras are in such a similar price bracket. Thanks for the help!
I was about to upgrade my X-T2 to X-T3 but now with X-S10, I am in a huge dilemma. Will hold on a little longer and hope to have the final conclusion when X-S10 is out in Singapore. Love the content and subbed. Hello from Singapore!
Cameras, even if you limit yourself to Fujifilm, are a complicated space with no clear decision path. Thanks for your kind words, please say hello to all my friends in Singapore.
Thank you for a fanstatic video as always. One question: how is the shutter mechanism? Is it dead quiet and silky smooth like the X-H1 or just normal like the X-T3. I love the feel of the XH1's shutter. Thank you.
No 10-bit internal video recording on an otherwise quite video-centric model? Also with this type of mainstream DSLR-like controls this might be the first Fujifilm camera which has almost no relevant USP over a similarly specified Sony. Maybe „film simulations“ aside which I don’t use anyway.
Great video Maarten. Aside from those who are used to the Fuji dials, the little things like small battery, one SD Card slot only and whose who compare it to expensive cameras, I assume it all boils down to not having the best AF and 4K 60 fps right?
I am new to the Fuji world and think this is cheaper than the X-T4 and with the price difference, I can get a better lens. Which all purpose lens do u recommend with it?
Well, yes the 4K/60 is missing, along with H.265, 400Mbit recording and a few minor details. Otherwise, the AF is as good as the X-T4. Thanks for your kind words.
@@MaartenHeilbron Many thanks for ur replies Maarten. Many videos are recommending the 18-135mm with f3.5 to 5.6 with almost unnoticable loss in sharpness. Any thoughts?
I've watched several of your videos and subscribed, I just got an X-S10 and it's my first changeable lens camera. I went with it over Sony, and Canon mainly because it seemed to be more up to date with USB c and features and I wanted to grow with the camera not feel it was outdated by the time I figured it all out. I am mainly using for video, but I am excited to also have a good camera for trips and walks also. Thank you for all your work the videos are helpful. What would be a good first lens? I got the XF 16-80mmF4 that came with it.
@@MaartenHeilbron I'm not sure, I want to shoot some room shots and close up of objects for TH-cam videos. I just took my camera out yesterday and started getting used to carrying it out in the world and taking random pics on a walk to get more familiar with it. I definitely liked the grip while walking so it wasn't just swinging from my neck. Thank you for your reply and I'll get more familiar with the lens I have before I experiment with any others. I just thought a primary fixed non-zoom was something most people have too. I did like the 35mm setting the most as it felt close to my actual vision view.
@@rgcmusic For shots in small rooms, the 8-16 is likely your best choice - th-cam.com/video/k_RrOQG_ubU/w-d-xo.html. If you can't get as close as you like, the first (least expensive) option is a teleconverter - but I don't think Fujifilm has one that's compatible with either the 16-80 or 8-16 (there maybe a third party option) - or a macro lens. Have a look at 7 artisans - th-cam.com/video/swyrIJ0JSjs/w-d-xo.html (that is manual focus only). Fujifilm has some options, which I've tried, but can't really recommend.

@@arunmuthu1760 For the items in the image (like the leaves on the left side) that aren't as sharp, it seems as if they're just out of focus. Sounds like you're expectations are slightly high for this camera and lens combo. The pavement, the bricks and other things that are in focus look fine to me.
@@MaartenHeilbron Got it. I am a student with a bit of budget constraints rn. So will try to get loads of practice shooting manual before investing in a new lens, BTW, Huge respect for replying to each and every comment. You don't have to do, but you choose to do. Really great work !!
@@arunmuthu1760 Thanks for the kind words. Don't fuss over manual mode. The camera is designed to do some of the technical things related to exposure and focus for you, take advantage so that you can concentrate on composition and timing. However, having an understanding of the mechanics of photography can be helpful when the camera doesn't do what you want.
The XS10 seems the perfect camera for me to upgrade from my OMD-EM5. It's almost like Fuji has M43 users in mind with the XS10. But I'm wondering, what is this XS line, how do you see it fit with the XT line? Will Fuji release the XT-40?
In my humble opinion, just about any APS-C camera would be an upgrade from the EM5. No idea what the X-S line represents yet - and I suspect neither does Fujifilm. Naming and numbering of camera models here and elsewhere is arbitrary, capricious and incomprehensible.
A no nonsense, hands on review for those who really want to know the pro’s and con’s. Which is most welcome when, in this current climate, you probably couldn’t get HANDS ON . 👍
Would you say it was closer to the XT3 or XT30? Love your reviews do you know if the XS 10 can do time lapse and stitch together the images like a Panasonic will.
Actually, I'd rather have it there than on the thumb rest where I was constantly accidentally activating it as on some other Fujifilm models. While UHS II might be an advantage for burst (haven't tested that yet), it's not needed for video at 200 Mbits.

I know, that's not clear to me either. This seems like the camera the X-T40 could have been.
@@MaartenHeilbron somebody described it as the love child of the X-H1 and the X-T30.

Thank you for your thoughts
Paul
If the 16-55 fits your budget, it is my favourite Fujifilm zoom lens, and it's the one I use for my videos.
I feel like I'm watching a PBS camera review show. That's a compliment. Love it. Lead-in section focused on ergonomics was awesome. I'm sold!
That is a compliment! Thank you very much. Always nice to hear from an appreciative viewer.
@@MaartenHeilbron Unfortunately my prescription is probably greater than the diopter adjustment available!
@@southernman267 Oh. Mine is +3, and it seems to go little further than that.

I didn't know X-H1 could be adjusted.

We do appreciate your reviews, they border on user guides rather than reviews, one question that is maybe unfair to ask, for the best quality images would you recommend a full frame sensor camera over aps-c or M4/3?
Frequently, even if the megapixel count is the same, the larger sensor will have larger pixels which capture more light. So, mostly, yes.
Great review, thanks. Prefer the “pure” Fuji approach of the XT series (all manual controls, no PASM dial), but I can see that it will appeal to a new group of Fuji shooters.
Well, let's see about that.
Nice preview, but I can't find anyone mentioning, how you zoom in during image playback, touch screen is the only option, or there is some other trick, thanks? X-Tx cameras use rear dial click in to accomplish it.

A;ways my pleasure, thanks for your kind words, appreciated.
Thanks for stopping by, I appreciate your kind words. To be fair, it was two takes (check the watch) the first "scene" was take two.
Maarten, your camera reviews are far superior to all the other people reviewing such devices. Thank you.
That's very kind, thanks for taking the time to comment.
Can you hear the IBIS noise when you look through the viewfinder? That really annoys me with my X-H1 ...
There is a very, very faint motor/fan noise which I can hear only when I put my ear to the lens, not when shooting with the viewfinder. It does not seem to be related to either the focus engine or stabilization.
@@MaartenHeilbron thank you!
Hi Marten , am not fishing for mistakes but i think on 11:41 you meant 23mm f1.4 NOT the f2 . The f2 doesn't have a clutch to focus manually.
Love from Saudi Arabia
yes you do have fans there.
Good catch. Sorry about that, I was in a hurry to get it done - the script was right, but I. mis-spoke. And please do say hello to all my fans in Saudi Arabia.
For a while now I've been contemplating between an x-t2 or an x-t3. This just makes the decision harder.
Great video with lots of information. Thanks.
But, if it's not a decision that's easy, go with the lesser camera as that likely meets your needs.
Haha.

@@thekushinator Thanks for keeping me in the loop.
Is there a shortcut to format the SD card? Love your video. I'm new to Fujifilm
Not on this model. On some Fujifilm cameras you hold the centre (OK) button and the delete key.
Hello Maarten,
Enjoyed the succinct review.
As usual, concise, yet detailed, amazing work.
Thank you for this preview :)
Take care!
I appreciate your very kind words, thanks.
Hi Maarten,
thanks for the detailed review.
Why do you feel that you will need to change to full frame in the future? Why not do it now?
It sounds like you've made an excellent choice for your needs.
Im having a hard time picking between the x-s10 and lumix g90/95. This seems to have more futures and is newer but from what i saw Fuji’s ibis is not on par with Panasonic. Looking to shoot more videos then photos. Would like your opinion cheers
Buy a tripod and the camera you prefer.
Love your videos. For a person migrating from mobile due to low image quality, which mirrorless camera would you recommend for stills and video with ease of use and good low light performance. I intend to buy for casual use whenever I travel and also to make TH-cam videos in the coming future. Thanks
Do you have a brand preference? Is size or cost a factor in your decision? What do you intend to do with the photos?
@@MaartenHeilbron thank you for the advice! I will check it out!
That will, as you suggest, depend on your fingers. There is contact with my hand and that lens.
Dear Maarten why in my x-s10 model there is no x webcam option? Please 🙏 help to understand!
It is not a menu option, it's a driver you install on your computer. Then connect the USB cable and set the connection mode to X webcam (manual p. 237)

Thanks, you too! I appreciate your kind words.
So, what's your verdict? Or you're going to wait for the full review?
@@MaartenHeilbron Yes i will wait for the full review because i do not want to spend too much on gear. I am a cautious buyer and would want to have a equipment which meets my needs of Photography which is out-door / street photography and clicking portraits including shots in low lights.
Can you also save video settings on the custom memory dial? It would be easier to switch to 4k and then 240p
Thought I mentioned that was the thing I hated about the custom settings - no video!
Thanks for the review. You are an excellent expert. So far I have had a Canon EOS 70D and a camcorder. I don't want a big heavy camera in nature anymore and not two devices. I'm looking for a good camera solution that makes great photos and videos. Would you recommend Fuji X-S10?

@@MaartenHeilbron Thanks for your kind reply and advice Maarten. Much appreciated.
I am, as Paul points out, a binary person. I do usually try to keep my emotions in check, sorry they slipped out :-)

@@MaartenHeilbron the videos are great! You did cover so many things that the image stabilisation part was just one short item on your list. Pretty sure he said that.

Thank you for a fanstatic video as always.
One question: how is the shutter mechanism? Is it dead quiet and silky smooth like the X-H1 or just normal like the X-T3. I love the feel of the XH1's shutter. Thank you.
Right, agree. It's not as quiet as the X-H1, but don't have an X-T3 for comparison. It is a relatively quiet and subtle mechanical shutter.
Sorry to hear you're displeased. You're sure to love the X-T4.
I'd suggest that either the 18-55 or the 1`6-80 make a good all around pairing.

Would you say it was closer to the XT3 or XT30? Love your reviews do you know if the XS 10 can do time lapse and stitch together the images like a Panasonic will.
X-T30. Thanks for the kind words. It does have an interval timer to shoot images, you'll have to create the time-lapse yourself.
The Q button seems to be in a strange place. Do you find it easy to use? Also, no UHS-II would seem to be a negative for using high burst or video.
Actually, I'd rather have it there than on the thumb rest where I was constantly accidentally activating it as on some other Fujifilm models.
While UHS II might be an advantage for burst (haven't tested that yet), it's not needed for video at 200 Mbits.
