I've played with Serato, Traktor, Algorithm Djay, and Virtual Dj.
    Traktor seems the easiest...

After messing around with both software and hardware, I found that Rekordbox DJ has worked the best for me. I feel like RB has the best color and beat FX compare to the other DJ software, and their controllers like the DDJ-RZ and RR Just does it for me. On the downside, it sucks that I can't use my controllers with other DJ software. Well, not with Serato, The RR can be used with VDJ and DJay Pro, but they just don't play well. I can't really speak in a more professional level since I do it more as a hobby, DJing on shoutcast with a small listening base or during house parties here and there while giving up on the mobile DJ thing since it turned out it wasn't the business I wanted to get into. But man, other DJs gave flack that I used RB instead of Serato, even worst showing up with a DDJ-400 connected to my iPhone using the DJay pro app, all because I just didn't want to carry heavier equipment with me to a party.
If you're using your own equipment, then it shouldn't matter. When I'm at parties or clubs listening to the music, I really don't think about the hardware. I think about the music being played, the mixing, the song selection and the order they play and honestly, that's what the crowd is thinking too. It matters if the DJ software is working with or against the DJ himself. Does it play well with their hardware. Does it have the features they need or want. Compatibility if they're working with other DJs or using club equipment. It's stuff to consider when figuring out what DJ software to use. But I also feel that picking a software just because it's industry standard or it impresses or to be accepted by other DJs is the wrong way to go. DJ in is about reading the crowd and setting the mood at a club, an event, or even at a small house or pool party. It's like what DJ Keo said and a lot of good DJs I know; at the core, all DJ software does the same thing.

VDJ is the minivan of dj software, yea it's sort of goofy looking, yea some give you shit for having it but if you want the most features, options and are secure in your own skin a minivan.....err VDJ is dope.
BTW I haul my gear around in a minivan too, so ladies....hit me up haha

I can work with any hardware or software. However, for my style, I prefer VDJ and RB. I mixed music, fx, videos and DMX lights for mobile gigs. I give people a mini Vegas style club experience at private events and weddings at a much lower cost. Most of the time, I am a one man show, therefore, VDJ give me the most flexibility because I can play music, mix videos and control lights with Soundswitch. Unfortunately, the other software do not provide that level of flexibility, except RB, which you must use pioneer DMX interface exclusively.

When I started DJing, I used Virtual DJ. My reason was I didn't understand Rekordbox at the time. My 1st controller was the WEGO 4. When I upgrade to DDJ 400, my main purpose was to use and understand Rekordbox5. Not only use it for the 400, but I could also use it with Pro gear as well. For me, that was a game-changer. I learned how to analyze, select beat grids, place hot cues, and choose different colors FX. I upgraded to my current controller the DDJ 800. I purchase it in Nov 2019. In April 2020 Rekordbox 6 came out. The only issue with switching over was I had to re-analyze my entire library again along with adding my cue points. Once I got that done, it's been awesome ever since. I've wanted to upgrade to a Pioneer stand-alone but since the supply shortage and the price hike on DJ hardware, it has not been possible. I have been looking at Denon DJ hardware but they too have been dealing with supply shortage and price hikes. Their Prime 4 and Prime 2 are both out of my price range. I did notice Numark came out with a stand-alone that has the same Engine DJ software but at a price that will fit my budget. Plus, I don't have to replace my DDJ 800. The Mixstrem Pro looks at the system I plan on getting. Also, it will allow me to learn and grow with the Engine software as I did with Rekordox.

The S11 has had me move from traktor Z2 to serato. Traktor is uninspiring, Rekordbox has disappointed me from not being able to read ntfs external drives. VDJ I got mad respect for as a backup I'm looking to use more.
The Z2 showed the way forward. the S11 to me is the Z3 that I was waiting on.

The exact same as me! I've had my Z2 since day one and loved it and was on board with Traktor before that, using a Vestax PMC 05Pro4 with the built in midi buttons. I even used Serato prior to all that when it was SSL back when I used to do weddings. I've had a break from DJn the last few years as I kinda lost inspiration due to the current state of music BUT felt the urge to get back on the decks since about 6 weeks ago. So I went to see what was new and what's changed with Traktor and NI in terms of hardware and software in the time that I had off...and basically nothing new at all. No new mixers since the 8 years since the Z2 came out from NI. I got my hands on the S11 not just a few days ago, the 1st day was somewhat frustrating as I couldn't find my fav features that I used in my mixing style that was on the Z2, but I ended up finding them thank God. Im still learning everything on the S11...and there's a heck of a lot. The few little probs that Ive had so far have only been a quick google search and was usually a very quick and simple fix. I agree 100% the S11 is the Z3 that we've all been waiting for. The more Im using Serato the more Im growing to love it. What Im loving about the S11 so far is that its basically a Z2 and F1 controller in one unit. My style of DJn is live remixing so this is perfect for me. I still got mad love for Traktor but with lack of support it seems like it may be a slowly sinking ship. I don't think I'll ever sell my Z2, I may have a Traktor set up put to the side just to pay homage and for memories sake.

I also like traktor visuals . Waveforms look much nicer and it is important when playing with new songs. Also find the auto beat grid is also much better than serato meaning less admin to do. The only thing that grinds me with traktor is the effects. They sound so much better than other software and much more adjustable but the controls for them aren't as easy. NI should bring out an intuative effects controller for instant gratification

All of them have major flaws, which is why I'm using multiple, and whatever I feel like.
    Serato:
    - DVS is just bad on Windows. I mean bad, sometimes like 2005 DVS 1.0 bad.
    - Shitty file compatibility.
    - Oudated browser.
    - Can't analyze songs without disconnecting hardware.
    Traktor:
    - Cue system is outdated.
    - No flexible beat grids.
    Rekordbox:
    - DVS somewhat lacking, compared to Traktor, and especially Serato.
    - You absolutely need certified (Pioneer) gear to use DVS.
    - Horrible purchase options. Expensive.
    Virtual DJ:
    - Full package, but too much hand holding to the point I'm not even sure what I'm controlling myself.
    - Ugly, and requires too much work to make it look decent and 'professional.'
    - Very expensive.
I'd probably switch to Virtual DJ if it wasn't over 300€ for a one-time purchase.
Never in hell would I pay over 20€ a month for DJ software, especially at this time of uncertainty.

I started with Serato, I'm cofortable with it, and all of my crates have been curated in Serato.... I have been debating ditching the laptop and going with Denon Prime gear and Engine, but am hesitant to switch. One biggie for me is because I love the Serato Sampler player feature and Denon's Engine Prime doesn't quite have something for that... also, I would still need a laptop if I want to use SoundSwitch. Hoping the mext gen of Engine software, and Prime gear, can run SoundSwitch on its own, and ads a Sample Player function similar to Serato. Aside from that, a standalone similar to the Prime 4, but with Serato built in, would be pretty sweet. Looking forward to what comes out now that it is NAMM season...

Hi DJ Keo, nowadays I use the clubs equipment so I dont have to bring mine but I do bring my own controller. The club I currently dj at has a pioneer S9 for serato which has serato sound card built in it. So I can just plug and play without having to use my controller. Problem with that or for most dj's if they go this route is that whereever you place your laptop the play button is away from the pioneer S9. I am at times comfortable this way and at times im not 'cause I do like using the S9 performance pads. I wish the pioneer S9 would have a play button to play the tracks on serato DJ Pro software. It is Best to work with a controller that has everything you need on it and just work on the controller and not having to go back and forth. I am lazy to bring extra equipment to the club, but i found a solution. I had bought a hercules starlight dj conroller about a year ago shortly before the pandemic began and I used to use it venues I dj'd at before. Yes it is small and does have some limitations than the big dj controllers have. But it is good for small venues and especially when the dj booth at these venues are so small you cant fit a big dj controller in the booth.
I have big controllers and small controllers other than Hercules Starlight controller. I have the old pioneer 4 channel dj controller for serato I forgot the model but its a few years old. I have the pioneer SP-1 sub controller, I have the Akai AMX/AFX for serato, I have the Xone K2, and I have the Denon MCX800 dj controller which I love to use but these venues are small with small dj booths. But first dj controller I ever started to dj with as far as controllers was the Allen & Heath Xone DX with itch. Now I am looking at the Roland 707M dj controller with serato. I've seen videos about it but I want to hear from the dj's that actually use the Roland 707M dj controller. I would love to use the MCX800 alot in my gigs, but like I said before some venues have small dj booths. I used to use the Akai AMX and the AFX together at my gigs, but seems Akai stopped continuing to release updates for their controller. Which by now leaves me with the Hercules Starlight DJ ccontroller.

I agree, to a certain extent. I think they are pretty visionary, though. They seem to be the first and the most comprehensive when it comes to finding a middle ground between dj and producer. Other software has been really slow to catch up, and where they have they still have limited functionality when it comes to live remixing and live dj/production capabilities. The only problem is is that these skills are hard, really high end, essentially 21st centuary turntablism, and not many people are really pushing it, but they will

The differences between packages are in the details: samplers, video control, dynamic beat-grids, stems, etc. If a DJ just wants to do AB mixing - and he/she can beatmatch by ear - then any DJ app will do. If a DJ wants to use live MIDI instruments, control a lightshow with video, all while beatmatching a 70s disco track with a progressive house track - not all DJ apps can do that.

QUESTION: Building a large library with correct grids, cues, loops, etc is a lot of work. Does switching your library from one to another software work well enough? Or is anyone finding that they are locked into one software (or out of another) because of the library transfer? This would make a software agnostic person stuck... From what I see, Denon library does not import into RB for example, although maybe 3rd party software would do this.

I have used Traktor and serato for many years my primary set up is Z2, 2xX1, F1 they just work all are midi mappable for serato so versatile and audio selection works perfectly with Mac OS with any thing, even the original vestax vci 100 all analogue mixers and analogue mixing desks & audio interfaces 2/4/6/8 channels etc
my secondary system uses serato dj pro with full expansion packs . great system I love it what it offers an alternative stems and the ability to add vdj content , but it has 1 major problem a lack of an interface with rane sl2/3/4 gone and the denon ds1 also discontinued it just won't integrate into a system the problem is drivers Mac OS and Serato DJ pro a perfect storm , unlike serato studio which has a good audio and midi interface dj pro has non even with the complete package midi and audio are missing and without another piece of primary hardware ie controller or mixer with serato no more than a stand alone laptop solution, this lack of versatility limits it's usability, as the use of all midi controllers are not supported the only options are a dj mono splitter cable for mono or a master output in my case using a apoggee duet no deck 1&2 so I can't mix on the Z2 which can be used as a stand alone analogue mixer. I feel that serato missed a trick here . the should have added the ability for audio and midi as another expansion pack or part of 3.0 it would be simple as they already have the software in serato studio?
recommendations if you want to go down the serato route before you purchase the software buy a mixer which is serato compatible but check it is not discontinued and that the software drivers and Serato DJ pro software are also compatible with your computer it could easily be a very expensive error, industry standard ?

LIke you, I am pretty much software-agnostic. I actually switch between Traktor and Serato as I think Traktor is better for control vinyl and Serato is better with Phase (at this point in time) . I tried Virtual DJ 2020 for a weeks on a Z2.........the software was "ok" but there was just way too much cut-lag on the cross-fader and VDJ support could not help me to get it to cut like it does on Traktor or Serato. I've yet to try Rekordbox.

Any DJ software that can work for me in real time is the winner. Not a lame duck that does little or nothing for you while you are on your toes. So to this end the Ai that VDJ and DJ Pro offers is great but I still go for Rekordbox because of the usefulness of the ''related tracks feature''. Serato is great for its simplicity but unfortunately it lags behind when it comes to this.

  • @GregMurrayEnt1
    @GregMurrayEnt1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

I like Serato, hands down. Serato's alga rhythm makes music sound best. The Video Plugin for Serato is not good. I bought the video for Serato and it didn't play all of my MP4 Video Files. I contacted Serato about the issue and they suggested I reformatted my MP4s to M4V. I have over 2,000 videos and I didn't want to go through the reformatting. VirtualDJ plays every video and the features from VDJ are easier to use than Serato. So, I use Serato when I only play audio and I use VDJ when playing videos. Serato sounds better, VDJ plays it all plus adds more features. When I stream with video, I use VDJ. When I play audio only, I use Serato.

IMO software and hardware does not matter. If you can rock on CDJs, Tables or Controller then you are a DJ. The real DJ term is joke nowadays when it comes to referring to an artist that is rocking a party. However, if the software is selecting and mixing the music for you then your not a really DJing. I respect those that have mastered their craft and put in time practicing. Currently, I use Serato DJ with Technics, Phase and Rane 70. Most recently I got the Ortofon VNL (dope needles BTW) and I got them because I am tech nerd and gear a slut. Heck, I also own a Rane 12 and a bunch of old mixers. But for most gigs I am using a Pioneer Controller. I jump back and forth with using Traktor. Also, the industry standard changes much more frequently now and gear is only as good as DJ. Using VDJ, RekordBox, Serato, Engine Prime or whatever is a tool and just like construction workers you have to be skilled in your craft or you will only make unstable projects. I went from crates to Serato, Final Scratch, back to Serato, Traktor (I loved my Z2 and should not have sold it) and back to Serato. Going to try VDJ soon, if it is dope then I will continue to use it if not I always have my other software.
