    Once Rekordbox was paired with Pioneer gear, passing Serato was inevitable. I wonder if Pioneer will eventually buy Serato? There are good things in Serato that Rekordbox can really use.

    I was using rekordbox when I was in college alongside CDJS and as a prep software it was seriously onto something big but as soon as I started on traktor pro tho I took to that so quick probably due to having constant access to gear via my controller but seeing how much it's evolved is absolutely zero surprise it's taking over.
    Even after all that tho I'm still a traktor user at hearts and always will be

    After 20 years, I made the switch this year from pure vinyl (no timecode) to dvs...and first tried serato and rekordbox. Both did what they should...
    then a month later my nephew recommended me vdj...and god damn...after using that, all those other stuff is just restricted toys.
    Not only has it shit like stems...but its mightiest feature is the full midi command script ability. With a single button push you can start whole script chains and set remembered parameters, the most simple thing you can do is fe you can add features like scratchbank or any fancy other shit to whatever controller or mixer you connect, that never were supposed to have that feature...
    script chains with parameters on the other hand...a whole different ball game if you know what you are doing...lightyears ahead of anything on the market.

    I've used Rekordbox, Tracktor, VDJ and Serato. I even bought the hardware for Rekordbox and Traktor, each time I end up back with Serato. When you play out on a regular basis you need something that will fit your workflow and consistently work. VDJ is my backup software but Serato is my program of choice.

    DJ KEO makes a solid point on the future of djing. I just want all the djs reading this take a second to analyze my next statement. First of all, I have both Serato and Rekordbox on my MacBook. But I use Serato all the time when I dj out. With that said, the reason I have Rekordbox is for what I see forthcoming in the future of djing. If Pioneer was able to go head to head with the Rane one with their Rev 7 controller. What is stopping Pioneer from taking the feedback from the Rev 7 & creating a Rev 9 with everything from the Rev 7 & including 9 inch moving platters with a waveform screen on the controller as well. Plus turning a song acapella like vdj. But to put the icing on the cake. It's stricly for Rekordbox users🤔🤔🤣.
    That's my two cents, to all my Dj brothers & sisters. Keep the Dj community going strong and positive. Until the next🎧🎤

    As a guy who’s been in the marked for digital DJ’s since Stanton final scratch, and as I look across the room at my pioneer Dj gear with Serato printed right on the front of it, the actual software you use is not even an issue anymore. One has this effect on this piece of equipment and the other has this knob on this specific piece of equipment….it all works, right? All love.

    So I started DJing last year from scratch.
    And after some research, I chose to go all in on Pioneer ecosystem and Rekordbox.
    Since that I did a bunch of gigs and events on my gear and on club gear (CDJ's) and Im very happy with past me
    who chose Rekordbox.
    First, the price is 0, for someone starting out and maybe not even sure its going to be a thing in his life in the future,
    getting a free software is nice.
    Plugin mess.. You basically get a pro version, yes there is an upgrade, but you really dont need it and dont need to worry
    about this and that plugin. You install and you basically ready to go.
    Seamless integration with club gear. As a noob performing the first couple times is scary, so you want to minimize the unknown's
    and friction to a minimum. So stick preparation, settings, export etc for a club gig is so easy and smooth its a joy, plus you feel right
    at home on the CDJ's menus from the get go.
    Also its seems that Pioneer is going forward hard with this so more and more future gear will be Rekordbox only
    As a software, It pretty much does the same and in a reliable way (never had one crush, not home and not during an event). There are some fancy features
    that are only on Rekordbox, related with performance pad mapping and some stuff around samples (not using these yet).
    So for someone like me who is aiming for club gigs (which is 100% on Pioneer gear in my country) Its an obvious choice looking
    forward.
    At the end of the day, both of these softwares do the job great but I feel Rekordbox helps you reduce friction in some areas and focus
    on the important things - music.
    Just wanted to share my experience as most of what I read about this topic is coming from DJ veterans and mite be
    a bit misleading for someone that looking to start from scratch
    PS: If you are aiming to turntables and scratch battles, Rekordbox mite be not the right choice as alot
    of the gear is Serato only.
    PS2: All of the above is IMO so don't kill me :)
    Hope this will be helpful for someone

    I havent used rekordboxDj but I wanted to try it out because i hear its better at analyzing songs that mix in key better than serato which as a beginner is crucial so that you get the feel on how to mix better. As well as a better file library Gui/crate making to organize your songs. However im currently using serato Pro since the controller I currently have numark platinum fx uses serato. Once I upgrade maybe i'll decide to use rekordbox. Although I really want that denon dj prime 4 but it only works with serato.

    • @SuppeUrt
      @SuppeUrt 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      True! And on top of that VDJ works with all the gear that the other DJ SW vendors support -- COMBINED! So if a piece of gear works with either RB, SDJ, Traktor or Engine, there is a good chance it will work on VDJ too. So, therefore VDJ is the safest platform in which to build your library.

    Rekordbox is fantastic software especially for Library Management. It is built upon a database. Sadly most DJs are not very tech savvy both with audio gear and especially with Computers. Rekordbox/PioneerDJ should do themselves a favor two fold. A) Work on making the software more intuitive, and B) Produce more "How to" content in the social media sphere.
    My prediction of them gaining top spot was with the release of the DDJ 400. Not only is that a fantastic controller it comes with the full Rekordbox license which now is 'hardware' unlock with RB6. In the Rekordbox forums every month we saw new users as in new DJs and new Serato converts. The DDJ 400 was at the perfect price point for Serato DJs to dip their toe and once they could see the power they were hooked and converted.

    DJ Keo makes a great point. Remember, Pioneer was all in with Serato till they decide to create their own DJ software via Rekordbx. I know Denon saw the survey Digital DJ tips did and are in their lab right now to improve their DJ software. When Nu Music (not if) decde to focus solely on the Engine DJ (i.e Numark Mixstream Pro), Serato may be ripe for Pioneer to purchase them. We as DJs have to watch and see how thing folds in 2022 and beyond.

I regularly export my playlists to USB so I can play at bars/clubs/lounges as they have CDJ's. am I crazy? one reason I don't fw Rekordbox is bc of the pitch FX. even VDJ does it better. I want the knob at 12 o clock to be reg pitch... turn the knob left to pitch down and turn right to pitch up. Rekordbox does this weird thing where 12 o clock starts at like 25% pitched down for example. if I'm doing something wrong please correct me. Pitching up n down with a knob is a big part of my style Nd I have to click around way too much on rekordbox to do that ♥

    Serato's downfall is also that they dont have a way to have djs use a usb flash drive instead of a laptop. Alot of us don't bring laptops to dj. Especially in festivals and guest dj spots.

  • @LeeZerUK
    @LeeZerUK 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Serato should try to port or create a full fledged ipad app with most importantly full DVS support, to become the first ipad app truly capable of such features. Once they become the go to mobile app they then can both reel in younger future dj's thanks to affordability and as you pointed out product placements. This would also allow them to potentially claw back some of that new found standerlone market whom have switch to prime's and RX's. To take on standerlone units all they would need is R&D in to something like a reloop buddy which would make the serato option between half the price or a full $800 cheaper then standerlone units.

    • @dubbylabby6068
      @dubbylabby6068 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That app is called DjPlayer Pro and it has been doing DVS feom 10 years ago. The problem isn’t Serato going iPad, it’s djs rejectimg iPads over a decade and market shifting from long ago. Djing with laptops isn’t reliable at all and Pioneer first attacked “controllers” but (after NI rejecting partner with them) understood they need a “Dj software” to cut its dependency on them. Buy Rekordbox prototype to Mixvibes guys (a flava version) and there were the first “victim”, then keep working with Serato until killed Traktor (btw NI helped abandoning the pro market due the shift) and keep growing until now… Serato still has value but after Rane split (and after Traktor fails) Pioneer got (once again) the deFacto standard for clubbing… the bad news are there wasn’t clubbing for over 2 years but streaming (the market shift was going on, pandemics just accelerated it) and this new trend doesn’t requires Cdj3000… just a controller or standalone… Pioneer are the only one to fulfill every segment of the whole process. Rekordbox is still worst than Serato but the whole proposal is more appealing to everyone. That’s why they released Rev controller and scratch mixers. Pioneer wants to be “everything” amd every day goes it’s near to accomplish that mission…

    • @Soufside_Slim
      @Soufside_Slim 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Stubborn DJs rejected streaming and the iPad, as if a laptop was used in the 70s-90s. Not like they are still using vinyl or CDs either. They will be late to the show as usual.

    That survey is really surprising; I work professionally as a DJ in a large city and I don't know a single open format DJ that uses Rekordbox DJ over Serato...I wonder how the numbers would be different if they split up the survey into rekordbox used as music management software for loading onto flash drives and rekordbox DJ itself; I bet it would paint a very different picture.

    • @DJKeo
      @DJKeo  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the survey shows that Pioneer and Rekordbox DJ have made serious inroads to the brand new DJs market and pealed away alot of professionals with new gear and features. If you broke it down by pros vs amateurs I think it depends on what type of music they play. Open format DJs will tend to go with Serato because thats what everybody else is using but its the wild west for other genres like house music and Rekordbox is expanding their lead there. Most club and mobile/wedding DJs have stuck with Serato but I can tell you I read all my comments and over the years and alot of Serato DJs are fed up for various reasons and have switched or are ready to switch.
      Serato needs to take this seriously the mood is not good for them, and Pioneer is motivated with the money and resources to take over.

    I’m surprised it hadn’t happened sooner. I was on Traktor DJ Studio, playing out once or twice a week from 2002-2005, before dedicated DJ controllers were even available. (I used an Apple G4 PowerBook with video editing controllers to handle the MIDI.). When Traktor merged with Final Scratch, I couldn’t wait to get onboard with the new gear but it was terrible and useless in a live environment. I hopped over to Serato in 2005 when it was a simple program without the bloat it’s acquired. Despite some of the setup headaches, it was smooth and reliable. I never looked back to Traktor and that stupid track collection file that couldn’t handle punctuation in song titles. Serato was good to me and I’ve got my money’s worth out of a now-ancient DDJ-S1 many times over, but my ideal setup is DVS with 1200s or CDJs with HID control. But Rekordbox has always been convenient with just a USB drive and headphones, assuming venues have Pioneer CDJs in good shape. Exporting my tunes to USB on Rekordbox can be torturously slow. In the 21st century, when we can sync so much data to the cloud, why on earth does Rekordbox take forever to scan music for updates between your hard drive and USB?
    I still haven’t used Rekordbox as a DVS, but when it works, exporting to a USB drive and just swapping with other DJs is all so much smoother and user friendly with Rekordbox and I’ve probably been playing out exclusively with it since about 2015.

I don't think there is any question they will start pushing Rekordbox more in the future to increase the lead. And if InMusic does the same that could be a perfect storm of bad news for Serato as we know it, they could very well be bought by inmusic and merged into engine prime. Have you ever toured in areas where there is zero standarization of the gear in any of the venues? How about dealing with the fact that the equipment rider on your contract doesn't mean anything when there are no pro-level rental companies on an island? For these reasons I embrace Pioneers monopolistic grip on our world and I don't freak out when it increases.

    Serato should release an standalone host box for controllers&DVS/Phase (imagine Numark dashboard shape+audio interface) and it will be a success… but I’m screaming it since they discontinnued SSL… Denon Prime series are based on similar concept (prototype was done on raspberry pi) and maybe Denon could benefeit of Serato purchase as brand but probably not happenning. Another brand that could hit Pioneer is Behringer (stated they want to democratize the dj field time ago) and also open source projects could be a “thing” for the dj segment slice of antiPioneers… Software evolves fast than hardware and none of the Pioneer offerings has spleeter steam support… so there are “options” but not “will”. If VirtualDj goes iPad with Apple Silicon transition trend then we could get a winning horse. Reloop Touch was a warning…

    Serato is in trouble. InMusic forced me to move over to Traktor. I had to upgrade to a new Mac. My Numark NS7II and my Rane 62 nolonger work. InMusic also discontinued the Rane sl and the Denon ds1 audio interface. I not going to buy a new mixer or controller just to use Serato. I don't know what Pioneer is up to? Their Interface 2 has been on backorder for almost a year and I am not going to pay for a subscription. I have owned Traktor forever and I paid the 49.00 to upgrade. I can use any audio interface I want.

  • @RussFryman

    Not really surprising on the major trends.
    Are the relative movements in Rekordbox / Serato real? I’m a Traktor user and have been thinking about a DDJ-400 with RB just to fiddle around with it. A good number of my DJ friends are in the Traktor/Rekordbox universe, switching back and forth depending on how much “controller-ism” they want to use in a set or session. Serato’s missteps on updates and direction have made people more leery of the platform, for the same reason that Traktor lost marketshare. I suspect the general trend is real. Most of the Serato users I know play one song at a time. The whole song. And they play another. Without mixing in between. On Pioneer or Numark equipment. Why put up with the hassle of mixed equipment/software when RB can do all of that on a cheap $300USD controller?
    InMusic may have bought their first couple percent of the market with the “it can’t be that cheap” SC5000 / X1800 release deal, but the additional growth is on a solid platform making incremental gains in price and performance. They made their impressive launch by taking the most popular features in controllers and making them part of a stand alone system. Smart Marketing. But very little of the flexibility that made controllers the incubators of new art/tech. Is that enough to make it into double-digits? What if they finally port it to a mobile device and let you add your own controller? And customized mappings? I suspect that combination would relegate Serato to Traktor-land, having once been a major player, now holding via an ever-diminishing loyal fan-base that hangs in there for reasons that sound logical, but are more emotional than anything else.
    I honestly don’t know what’s up with VirtualDJ. On specs and features alone, they should be killing it. But I can’t count how many times I’ve installed it and tried it out, only to delete it later on. And if I’m running computer only for a backyard event - I usually just pull up a streaming service playlist instead. Evidently I’m not alone.

    I've been on RB since 2013 and been using CDJ's. RB is much better than Serato cause 99.9%. All possible clubs and venues have Pioneer gear and 99.9% start-up DJ's begin on RB. As Keo said himself. Traktor, Denon, Rane & Pioneer have their own gear. Serato doesn't....i mean they do but they're mostly controllers, was talking about standalone. The only way serato mixers work if they collab with Rane or Pioneer *which happened many many time*
    but RB DVS is for me personally really solid, but it's stupid that you need to find INTERFACE2 or a specific DJM that supports DVS
