VDJ on a touch screen works xtremely well. Response is perfect. Stems take time to get used to but once you do; you won't mix without them.

VirtualDJ first program we ever made was a pitchslider/shift (keylock and tempo) for Winamp, then the DJ software Atomix-mp3. (hence the name Atomix for the company).
Atomixmp3 was never about automix ;-) And subsequent software releases (Numark Virtual Vinyl, VirtualDJ, PCDJ VJ, eJay, DJ Decks etc (all made by Atomix)) where about vinyl turntablism to video jockey. The company vision is of course about making technology and software for DJs, and not automixing. Its just a feature out of 100s, and not even a main feature, its a "side feature" tucked away in the browser sideview ;-) The Atomix name resembling automix is purely coincidental. The company name and logo was nuclear (as in powerful), sounded cool back in the 90s ... thats all ;-) Perhaps in fairness it has not aged well, but so many company names from decades past have not ;-) Apple is not a fruit company, and Atomix is not automix ;-)

I've been a VDJ user for the past 15 years. I had a short stint where I used Deckadance 2 ( before it was sold to Stanton ). I tried Serato and could never adapt to it. From a UI standpoint ( or the visuals ) to a performance standpoint I never found the experience enjoyable with Serato. With VDJ the only time I use automix is when I'm hosting a party and I want background music. Other than that I have all the auto features turned off and I do everything manually with the skills I've been developing for the last 15 years. I don't agree with their mission statement but I understand the implication of the new technology to help take a DJ's skills do the next level. I also like how everything is included with VDJ instead of having to buy expansion packs.
Also with the Stems you can tie them to your hot cue pads instead of your EQ knobs which is my preference.

This comparison isn't exactly unbiased. VDJ look and layout is FAR superior to Serato. I'm not even talking about customization and skin. I'm just saying from a functionality standpoint, you get way more useful info, better library view, etc on VDJ.

i use both programs, but i use VDJ more than Serato. With serato lite, some features is still locked until you buy serato pro. More: VDJ lauches about a second but serato takes too long to load. Serato crashes more, VDJ dosen't crash at me at all times.

Am a bit late here but people don't really care what or which program you are using, the most important thing is that how do you utilize the program, how do you entertain the people because at the end of the day, they need good music no matter the program used. I've seen better Dj's doing cool scratches on different programs , My point here is we don't really care if you are auto mixing or manual mixing, all i care about are the following, (sound quality, transitions in and out , and perfection) meaning it depends on the users creativity.

You've tried hard to come up with categories that would favour serato :-) They had to be defensive in their statement because of a lot of down looking big money snobistic hate marketing that bought serato name on controllers and bet that's how your story started since you've said you never tried VDJ before. They even commented on your small video, bet serato or pioneer would not - thats your lesson in different approach that tought you something looking at your answer. Serato was a pain for me, it didn't even work without connected controller to prepare your tracks. Sorry to say but it looks like you bought into that snobism in the review to come up with offence for their statement. You can't say you dont know shit old DJs. You can't artificially block technological progress, music industry tried to stop MP3 for so long... same way pioneer is still making people buy hardware spending gazillions to beat laptops so wedding DJs operate far higher technology by artificiall coroprate arangements. The stem technology is a fking mind blowing history game changer never done with such precission that you can actually mix separating musical arrangements rather than frequencies.

As an ex Traktor user who migrated to VDJ and glad I did purely because it's so stable, I have to say that VDJ does NOT totally automix perfectly as has been made out in this video... I come from a vinyl background and there's no way I would play a set using automix. It would not sound correct as it wouldn't be able to swap genres for instance.. It can't read a crowd.. It would be boring too.

Rekordbox: Festival and top Pro DJ use but missing some things. Worlds Top DJ's must use. Anyone can, but industry standard for professionals like it or not.
Serato: Most wide spread, most versatile and seen. From Pro to smaller club DJ's, weddings, bday DJ's etc. Most commonly used.
VDJ: Packed with features, can do everything the others do and more, but aimed at beginner DJ's and kids, but not exclusively. Looked down on by professional djs as being a beginner dj tool. All great software with pros and cons but there is a stigma with using each one and how you are perceived by using them similar to cell phone providers and pre paid would be. VDJ is looked down on at the top levels. It's amazing software but the stigma will live on since Pioneer has a firm hold on the top and Serato fills all the other spots.
    Great video!

He didn't mention video mixing, and VDJ is very cool for this. Blending a song VISUALLY is very fun and easy with VDJ as there are dozens of screen effects included. In the beginning, for 'the Look' the word he was looking for was 'interface'. Personally, I like my screen to mimic the outlay of my controller. The knobs and buttons that I press visually duplicate on screen.
This goes into the next thing he mention, which is pitch lock. I'm using a ddj sx 2, which has a pitch lock button, that was AUTOMATICALLY mapped to the software from the git go, so.. if its changing pitch as you alter the tempo, you just need to hit your pitch lock button. You can also just SEARCH pitch lock and manually check the box in the software.
I definitely love the automix feature. If you're a wedding DJ or you're doing any events where your hosting as well as producing, being able to walk away from the deck and keep the music going is a game changer. If you're at the bar every night, doing weddings, and making this your business, then VDJ is great. So you really need to manually mix every song for your low volume cocktail, and dinner background music? I Just set up my music by BPMs and let it do its thing. That frees me up to mingle with the crowd, my clients and get on the floor with people rather than being stuck at the deck the entire time.
My only issue with it, is that it frequently tries to do too much for you and that can mess with your work flow until you learn all the things you need to TURN OFF.
I've tried Serato and found it frustrating to use. Setting up the crates was annoying, and time consuming. For me personally VDJ just work intuitively from the start.

I used VDJ before. I remember searching for a track and seeing the results show me where that track was in multiple folders. Maybe it's your settings. I also remember being able to pull a track and move it to desktop to copy. I do know that different versions of the software have different features added and removed.

I have used both VDJ and Serato on and off over the years. My conclusion is that VDJ or the makers are innovators while Serato and its makers are followers. I do not see why I will have to make crates of the tunes already in order on my drive (double work). Worse because of the amount of music I have it crashes only make me do this process all over again. Yes, you can load the database, but with another program or piece of the program? Why? In VDJ that would be a maximum of three mouse clicks and you have everything. They never fixed the crashing of the database issue when you have a large number of files! From Broadcasting to Video Dj, VDJ has always been on the cutting edge and not the following trying to get it right kinda deal. It surprises me when people who use Serato say VDJ looks cluttered etc.....Once they go down this road I know they are just dumb. You can set up a virtual Dj to look exactly as Serato does (clean). The difference between the two to me is, Serato comes optimized while VDJ you optimize it for what you want. With this said, VDJ has far more settings and capabilities than Serato by far. I won't follow the Serato people who get fooled by the DJs that Serato pays to hype their product. By the way, this is not a paid observation by the makers of VDJ, its family, friends, or followers.

Actually a smart kid can learn how to DJ in months better than some of the old timers. I have witnessed it myself. The real issue here is that I know many old timers that can't DJ for squat. I am always amazed at how some of these guys have stuck around for 10, 20 years and they still get gigs. Some are like the brother in law of the bar or lounge owner. Or maybe they are in the same frat with the venue owner. Or maybe their prices are super cheap.
I suppose that my point is that just because somebody has a job that they have been doing for a long time doesn't mean that they are good at it. So hats off to the young folks that jump out there and learn this stuff very quickly. It's not rocket science.
But yes, it is strange how VDJ is grabbing the credit for some young new DJ outperforming some crappy old timer...
Note: I have tried just about all of the different programs. I keep coming back to VDJ because I like the library layout and other features. I also like the fact that they do fast updates. And then there is the fact that you can use many more controllers with it than any other program.

I started on virtual dj in 2015 and switched to serato by 2016 which i prefer. The only feature on virtual dj that i thought was better was the auto-sync. In vdj it matched 2 tracks perfectly by just pressing the button, but on serato in simple sync it just matches the bpm and you have to manually use the jog wheel to match it up to the other track. Serato should add that super-easy-sync as an extra sync feature, because its extremely hard to mix drum n bass! Also i found that vdj couldn't calculate the high bpm's of hardcore/gabber tracks and would come up on screen halved, so 180bpm would show as 90, but serato managed better. Any idea why some tracks do that?

    • @NickSpinelli
      @NickSpinelli  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I'm not sure technically why serato is more accurate with beat grids but I assume it has something to do with the crate loading and analyzing process because that's a big difference between the two programs. VDJ recognizes music folders instantly and can scan hardrives 10x faster than serato - it's just waaaay easier on VDJ all around. BUT, their beat grids and BPMs aren't nearly as accurate as serato - so that tells me it's the process yanno?

Nick, I watch your videos but this one isn’t the best, full of holes and inaccuracy. Sure I get you like Serato, sure I know you like being controversial to draw in the readers but hey you can do better than that jumping on the let’s hate VDJ is dumb, it has the most users throughout the world, has the best support, has the fastest update regime, it’s earned it’s place. I’ve been a DJ for 45 years, been through all the technologies but also, an I.T. Worker of 35 years so learn to use all the features. I love Serato and VDJ, I use them both, I gig Video, Audio and Karaoke and mix and match both programs. My view is not to get stuck on any one technology but use all features, they’re tools, my money comes from being able to read a crowd, play the right music at the right time, beat match when you can, filter out, echo out etc when you need to. Yes I use DJ edits, yes I use sync sometimes but it’s all about the music. Lastly, loved your bite on the Atomix sentence construction, in the same breath you said “could have wrote that better”, shouldn’t that have been “could have written that better” but hey, I’m English, lol

Honestly. I use Serato now. But I am about to download VDJ right now, because of the stem separation. If Algoriddim OR Serato would bring stem separation to WINDOWS... I am with you and prefer Serato up and down and I am a little sad that I am drawn to VDJ but it gives me a way to make mashups much faster than anything else. I would agree that I will still only use Serato in a Club or live setting...but for streaming or recording...i really think the real time stem separation is HUGE...but I wouldnt trust the overall workflow and quality for a club or party. So SERATO!!! get on this Stem Separation technology, because I am about to start paying VDJ 20 a month until you DO.!

So its a Proffessional Software but not Industry Standard.. It just doesn't have thr swag... Thanks that was great video. Especially about VDJ's philosophy (which never occured to me before). As a novice-begineer DJ I've tried both.
Only things stopping me from using Serato is their "crate" system which doesn't auto update with new files. And also no way to customize the layout of the file browser etc. Also as a programmer, I love the heavy customizations I can do in VDJ. However, hands down to Serato for refinement, waveforms and musicality.

When stems works my god is it amazing how creative u can get on the fly. Serato for years has been lagging behind on innovation that’s something everyone agrees on.

With #2, the pitch shifting in Virtual DJ... there's a single padlock icon to the side of the pitch shifters if you're in Essentials or Pro mode (not in Starter mode). You click on those so they're lit, you can speed up and slow down the track as much as you like without it sounding like The Chipmunks / Barry White. Which you have to pay for with Serato but comes with every version of Virtual DJ.
With the thing about not having to pay for Serato if your controller comes with it - the same thing apples to Virtual DJ! There are controllers that come with Virtual DJ LE ...but unlike Serato Lite that has nothing but the bare bones in its software, you can use the budget controller that came with VDJ LE to video DJ (which costs $349 to do with any version of Serato).
You awarded points to Serato because you didn't read the manual about pitch locking on VDJ, and remembered that you could get a 'lite' version of Serato with a controller without checking if the same is true for VDJ . You can, and the VDJ starter hardware already has the functionality of $349 Serato DJ Suite without paying through the nose for Pitch ’n Time DJ and Video DJ expansion packs!

Only DJs care about software and vinyl. Great video

I started using serato scratch live and then Serato DJ for about 6 years. I love serato, but ended up switching to Virtual DJ and havent looked back. As a video DJ, I found it frustrating that serato never updated or fixed the video plugin (still uses a dead program such as quicktime to run it). Video skins allows your audience to see realtime what tracks and what methods you use to mix on the screen. As a single op wedding DJ, the ability to program a short automix for bathroom breaks, going over to talk to the bride and groom to organize the next order of events, coordinate with the photographer videographer about whats about to happen of the timeline has changed etc. The rock solid stability of the video engine even while using high def videos without even running a high cpu meter. Being able to broadcast right from the software without using third party software. Cleaning up dirty tracks and adding video to an mp3 on the spot, turning a song into an instant karaoke by from inside the software downloading and layering lyrics and removing the vocals with the stems function. Having crates automatically update. Live remix capabilities through the samplers and stem combination is outstanding. Being able to color code with the touch of a button individual or a group of songs with the touch of a button is also helpful. The amount of features for someone who is very creative is insane, too long to list. The one thing I do like better in serato is the FX and the waveforms.

  • @dshawstudio
    @dshawstudio 4 ปีที่แล้ว +46

There are many things I can correct you on re: VDJ but as a first time user coming from Serato you are looking at it from their perspective so you may thini VDJ does not work because, "when I do this in Serato it does this." A lot of what you said Serato does that Virtual doesn't well, Virtual does do it but its not the default setting. Virtual is made for all DJs so some functions that you want other djs don't and VDJ tends to focus on the most widely used functions for the default settings. There are extensive options that you can change to customize to your liking. There is a bit of a learning curb if you want to change things up. For example you can change your keyboard settings in the mapping section to "factory default optional" and that will make your keyboard function just like Serato, etc. As far as being accurate that will also be in the settings. Things like key lock can be changed where the key does not change when you change the pitch of the song. Just saying. Full disclosure, I work for Virtual DJ so I'm always letting ppl know. Thanks for the review. I think you did a great job coming from your perspective.

Ok hold on a second here... You should have had someone invited over to show better the features and I'm down to do a zoom call and and show you some of this stuff. I'm by far one of the most advanced users and heavy users of Virtual DJ. Been using it for more than a decade. I've used serato and i just don't like it and think its not worth the hype.
So. I watched about 10 mins of your video and i had to stop and make this comment. Why? Because you did 0 research about virtual DJ. Zero.
You got a lot of stuff wrong. First of all, you can get any skin. Even serato like skin. So your number 1 can't be a tie.
Now moving to the vinyl part, you can edit the latency and get it real tight. I'm the only person i know that uses 2ms latency. I've never seen anyone else even attempt it. You need to know what you're doing there. As for the tempo changing when slowing the song, you had to enable master tempo setting where the key won't change. Now go back and do the same test again. You'll see then which is really good.
The ask the DJ feature is actually not an app. Its a website. People can go there and request a song which you will get in virtual dj. You'll be able to click on the name they put and see if you have it in your library. I've done countless weddings where i printed cards with a small QR code on it so people can scan it and visit that link. There is also a TIP option on it. I usually have over 50 requests on it and make on average 50$ Tips! Its perfect for kids and people who are shy to talk to the DJ. They just scan, visit the link and send their request. Its freakin awesome. I won't continue watching because I'm sure a lot stuff are wrong down the line. Willing to talk about it more though. ;)
