This case hits home. My grandpa was actually a homicide detective on this case. Marty Jones was one of the victims found in the boat shed, and he was my grandpa's cousin. The case affected my grandpa tremendously, and he passed away in 1977.

as a psychology student, you starting your story from his childhood and parents is very satisfying. Because our adult personality is the result of our upbringing basically. Love it!

    • @jluchette
      @jluchette 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +53

My undergrad is in psychology. It’s a hard job that pays nothing, but I loved my time as a student.
Of course your experiences largely shape your personality (biology plays a significant role) BUT: it’s way more interesting to study childhood experiences. My one and only published paper is about exactly that. How certain childhood experiences are strong predictors of certain future behaviors.

It was mostly about clean soviet kids cartoons which contrary to Bandura research don't produce societies without such individuals. Social institutions like school-church-army-prisons in certain cases was direct triggers of creating such cases in soviet society.

My dad just casually mentioned one day that he (a 12 year old boy living in the Heights in Houston in 1970) knew of Dean Corll and he and his friends thought he was kind of weird and stayed away. But apparently they went to the same lodge swimming pool that some of Deans victims were picked up from? I was so stunned by the nonchalance that I didn’t get all the specifics but woof. The 1970s was really a wild time to be a young kid….

This is a particular killer of pertinence to me in my life. One of the people Dean killed was a boy my mother was dating when he was murdered. When I first learned of The Candy Man, I asked my mother if she'd ever heard of him since he was in and around Houston when my mom was a teen/young adult. I kind of brought him up in random conversation and my mother's face went from happy and smiling to kind of pale, very solemn and then she told me the story of her boyfriend disappearing and the later results of finding all the truths out.
Also, random side note, Vidor is not pronounced "Vid-or" it's pronounced "Vye-durrr", in typical east Texas fashion.

@@Lorrdd This is different from object permanence because that really only applies to the objects and people an infant is familiar with. Things that they learn exist around them, whether they see them or not. For clarity's sake, you basically cannot lack object permanence towards people and things that you have no awareness of, simply because you cannot gain it until knowledge of the person or thing is established in the first place.

What really makes me angry about this case is the fact that the police stopped searching for victims as soon as Corll surpassed the previous record for known victims. Multiple witnesses came forward with other locations where they had noticed him digging suspiciously including one couple who saw him and his accomplices burying a long parcel on another beach. It makes me angry to think of all of those families who could have gotten closure.

The "don't take candy from strangers" saying originated much earlier with the 1874 abduction of Charley Ross. He was kidnapped for ransom. His family couldn't afford it and Charley was never returned. His abductors were killed in a seprate incident but one confessed before dying.
Unfortunately his partner was the only one who know where Charley was being held and that information died with him.
A man was later declared to be Charley Ross but the family didn't believe or except him. This was nearly 60 years after the abduction.
All this being said, this awful story definitely just reiterates that you should NOT accept candy from a stranger.

it's not weird at all, It's both a nature and nurture thing, there are some structures in the brain that handle things like stress and if they are badly formed or broken due to head trauma, cause people to become that brand of monster when they come into contact with such a situation. This is more likely to be a born in issue but there are a lot of reports of serial or spree killers having had a head injury soon before the first time they showed symptoms.

I've heard of the Candy Man, but I'm from Houston. Also I'm glad to see you dipping into one of my favorite genres, true crime, hope to see more like this!
Funny thing is, my mom never heard of the Candy Man, and she was actually living in Houston at the time.

Lemme js say that the only reason i watch murder documentaries and such at a young age is not cause I’m curious or obsessed with it. Im a very observant person. I can find out when you’re stressed in situations and such. When you’re genuine and not. I watch these so i know what COULD happen to me. So that i know how to get out of situations.

the "not actual footage" is giving me aujshehwjsj 😭😭😭
EDIT:: I had so much fun because of the narration and her comments and not because of the victims. I do feel sorry for the victims and their families. I hope they find peace.
