This was absolutely a case of fowl play. Some awful people decided to target them, likely due to their mental abilities, and forced them to be in that area. Afterwards, effects of the cold and panic would cause illogical choices. The others were absolutely trying to find help.
It is said that they are waiting for certain people to not be on this earth anymore. Once that happens it is said the truth will come out about this case. The people of the town they were close to knows exactly what happened to these 5.
That's absolutely what I believe. The evidence all points to that if you just look at where they randomly drove to, and how they ended up. Someone forced them onto that mountain. And those poor men lost their lives as a result
Just by the looks and sounds of how KmK talks about all the chilling facts about the case, enough for one to visualize what they must've gone through during that tragic situation
The fact that the father is the one who found his son has to be the most heartbreaking part of this. No parent should ever have to bury their child. It’s even harder yet when they’re the ones who find their deceased children. I can’t even begin to imagine the mental and emotional hell that caused.

The two boys were actually adopted by us and our neighbour [...] (unfortunately her fur baby passed away a few years ago in a really terrible and traumatic accident and we wouldn't even know what happened to him if our cat wasn't his brother, because...... (TW) there was only a tiny part of his body found (one paw...) and we sent it in for DNA testing and it was a match..... almost crying again just typing 😅😭 like my fingers are already shaking like hell 🙃) [...] and the three girls were adopted by a nice family. A few years later, my mum drove out to pick up a cat that got run over by a car and check to find their owners.... She already had a bad feeling about the area when she got there and she only had to read out the chip for confirmation... but the cat she picked up was one of the two girls that were our first foster kitties 😭😭 Way too many of our foster babies have already met an untimely end 😭😭 (thank god I haven't had to say goodbye to any of our own... but our two "OG" cats (before we started fostering and adopted some more 😅) are born in 2009 and I don't even want to think about their age 😭😭)
i am someone who is on the Autism spectrum and have multiple mental health diagnosis as well. i have multiple friends on the spectrum and also spend lots of time in the special education classroom at school voluntarily and help out with other students who have intelectual disabilities and/or physical disabilities.. this story was gut wrenching and made me cry so much just imagining that to people who are in my community was heartbreaking. God bless them and their families😢😭💗
As someone who is also Autistic and has a bunch of mental health disorders and stuff, I completely agree with you! This story was so sad to learn about, and it's so tragic what happened to them. They didn't deserve what happened to them, and it makes me feel very melancholic that stuff like this still happens now to people all over the world.
I grew up in Quincy! I know this story well. It was definitely before my time but that canyon is haunted. We’ve seen headlights coming up behind us and we’ll pull over to let them pass and no car ever comes. You should also investigate the Keddie unaliving
I’ve driven through that canyon. I can’t disagree with you because of what I’ve seen. My friends car broke down and while we were waiting for a tow truck to bring her some gas, we saw headlights coming. And because we could even start the car, the car we thought we saw was headed straight for us. Then just as the car got close enough it disappeared.
If I had to guess, Gary probably realized how bad of shape Ted was in, rushed to get him wrapped up as well as he could, fed him, swapped their shoes, and ran back out to navigate and find help on his own, probably assuring he'd be back and to just stay warm. Ted was probably so sick he couldn't even grasp the passing of time properly as he suffered, let alone get up and take care of himself while he waited for his friend to return. Realistically Gary probably got lost and succumbed to the wilderness, especially if he was experiencing hallucinations that would probably lead him around completely randomly given the state of panic and desperation his mind would be in, hoping something he heard or saw or felt was real and not just in his head.
This is probably a darker turn to that story, but what if Gary had a schizophrenic episode and something convinced him to leave Ted? Like what if Gary thought the best thing to do was to leave Ted and try and take care of himself. Or worse yet- Gary was the mastermind behind the entire thing and the reason why his remains were never found is because he doomed his friend group, then fled the crime scene? (again, this is all speculation that just came to mind)
@@lizard_wizard901 Have you read the case files? This theory is so off-based. Why would Gary be the mastermind of his friends' disappearance? Makes no sense. What's his motive? Also, how on earth could one slim man overtake 4 grown men with no weapon??? (Gary owned no weapon). He wanted to play in the basketball tournament the next day as bad as anybody, and he would've never jeopardized his chance to play. He was very caring toward his friends and protected them with a passion. Gary enjoyed spending time with his friends so much; the four men were his best friends. Gary was the closest to Ted and Jackie; in fact, Gary had known Ted for years as they were neighbors and lived right down the street from each other. Gary was a human being; accusing a missing victim of murder with no proof (and lots of evidence against that theory) is slander. People with schizophrenia aren't superhuman psycho murderers like Hollywood has led people to believe. Gary's schizophrenia could not have caused the disappearance. I implore you to think this theory through. How could one man force 4 others to drive 2 hours in the wrong direction at an elevation of 4500 ft to a desolate road that he has never been before and then somehow force the 4 out of the car to run into the freezing woods, and then he himself runs into the woods as well, getting hypothermia along with them? Gary Mathias perished up in the mountains like his friends. I would suggest you read the case files. The police currently regard this case as a homicide. Read Mr. Sheriff Wendall Anderson's police file. You can find it at yuba county's official website. Or watch the Missing Enigma's videos, he shows the file in the video in part 2 of his yuba county five videos. This case is not human error; Gary Mathias is believed to be a victim of foul play.
@lizard_wizard901 The choice of wording on that latter half is pretty offensive and it's extremely unlikely in my opinion. First of all calling him the "mastermind" insinuates he was evil (for no reason other than his disorder) and that this was some intentional murder plot orchestrated by him, which there's no evidence for and evidence against. It's not impossible he could've been the catalyst, that something could've happened and he ran off and they went looking for him. But they weren't a little off track, they were miles off course. And there weren't really treatments for schizophrenia at the time, so Gary would be used to managing his symptoms completely unmedicated. In the car on the way to a game, those symptoms would probably be pretty manageable, he might've needed to stop for air and space, but that wouldn't explain them being so far off track either. But upon thinking about it I think you might be right about the first part. Gary was a serviceman. He saw the food supply, he clearly looked around the cabin, he'd know this wasn't some random abandoned place. His friend has frostbite and is freezing. With a clear head, even if he was panicking, it'd be fair to expect he would know the best course of action would be to stay at the cabin, look around for a way to warm the place up, and take care of himself and the one sickly friend he found. He should have reasonable known his chances going out there weren't good, and Ted's chances would be worse if he never came back. BUT HIS FRIENDS WERE OUT THERE. That will seriously mess with your head. He would've already been a mess trying to deal with all of this, if his brain was freaking out trying to convince him to go find his friends, go get help, it's very plausible he would listen to his instincts, probably telling Ted and himself that he'll be fast, he's just gonna do a quick little search, just in case... And then he kept going and going until the couldn't see the cabin. No way to know if he even tried to find his way back or if he realized how fucked he was and just kept going. His remains probably weren't found because who knows, with his experience and drive in that moment, he might've made it to the other side of the mountain and ran off a cliff. If he had been found a part of him since, they probably would've assumed it was a hiker or something.
@@Lanoira13 Thanks for defending Gary, but there were actually treatment and medication for Schizophrenia back in 1970s. When the disappearance happened, Gary had been on a stable medication regimen for almost 3 years. The police do not believe he was a catalyst in any way.
@@ClarkKenttheBoss Ooooooh, I thought the disappearance happened in the 50s or so, and from what I read meds wouldn't come out until the late 60s I think? It was a 5 days ago now that I looked it up, so I could be misremembering.
I'm so stoked that you did an episode about the Yuba County Five. I ran into this story randomly one day, and out of all of the cold case mysteries I have ever heard about, this one has stuck with me. Everyone I talk to about it has never heard of it. It's such a sad and mysterious case. I've been surprised more people haven't heard of it, so I was pretty excited to see this today!
@krystalynkersey It's cool to see you guys out here that have heard of it and know about it. I'm from WA state and nobody I know has ever heard of it.
Wendigoon does a deep dive into the case, and even into the boys. I highly recommend watching that one as well if you're intrigued by this case. Super interesting and incredibly heartbreaking.
@@hannahpete26 I live in Yuba City. There are too many people living here who have never heard this story. IMO we need to keep it in the collective consciousness until it's solved.
Love that you covered this, I know one of the original investigators that worked this case and he has told me a bunch of info about it and given me a bunch of things from the case back in the day (news clippings and such nothing sensitive) this case is fascinating. He is still disappointed that it wasn’t officially solved but I am going to show him your video because he likes to know that the case is still alive in people’s minds. ❤
Drew Beason and Tony Wright know more about this case than anyone alive. If you guys want a real actual detailed breakdown of the case that is full of facts and evidence, you should check out either one of them on TH-cam. Beason interviews Wright for one show. You'll find out more about what actual happened on that one show than on any true crime channel in existence. Both have also written books on the case.
@@Jack123-n7q I’ve read both books and both have some good points and both make some interesting assumptions. As I said since I have been able to gather info from an investigator on the original case I have a good grasp of what happened and what the police believe happened. It’s always interesting to hear other view points and see what other ideas people come up with on what might have happened to them but I am so grateful for our friend who took the time to tell me all about this case. He jokes he had to fill me in while he could still do it since he is getting up in the years (still sharp as a tack but he likes to joke). But again he is grateful for each piece of media that comes out about this case because there is always the possibility that someone somewhere will have new info.
@ Amanda, while I understand the validity of your question- and not answering it will probably lead you to say I am lying- I don’t feel comfortable saying names in comments on TH-cam. Since this involves law enforcement and such it wouldn’t seem my place to name him. I apologize for being unable to provide the information but again personal information such as names and places just don’t belong in a public forum such as TH-cam.
@yuba5 there is always the possibility of foul play. Since there is no way to identify CoD on the boys that were found and Gary was never found at all you can not rule anything out. There are certainly suspicious circumstances surrounding the events of that night that will probably never be explained. His hope is that some explanation can be found to provide some closure to the families and that that the remaining boy can be found. He does not believe that Gary had anything to do with the deaths of the other boys and that he too perished in the events of the night just hasn’t been found yet.
I couldn’t imagine not getting answers to find out what happened to a loved one truly heartbreaking. May they rest in peace. Always enjoyed watching your videos ❤
I have family members that have intellectual disabilities and this case just gives me the chills, knowing how vulnerable people with intellectual disabilities are. They can be very trusting and/or very quiet which whenever something bad happens to them they either don’t know the right words to use or can’t understand why people are like that. It makes me so sad. Thank you Kris for sharing this case that sadly went cold
Crime! Conspiracy! Already know it’s a good day when I hear these words! Love you Kris! (Btw I think you and Caleb are an amazing couple!!! Love you guys❤)
This happened a few miles up the road from where I used to live. I used to live on Oro Quincy Highway with my grandma. Back in the 1970’s the road used to be a dirt road going from Oroville up to Quincy, but it has since been paved. Its so strange to think about a cold case happening only 20 minutes away from where my grandma lives
I'd be interested to hear more about the hikers! I remember hearing a mention of the story a while ago. These cold case videos are always so interesting, crazy the things that can happen, stay safe out there, y'all 😬
I love this series it informs me about cases I didn’t know about and giving me info on cases that have always intrigued me but I didn’t know all the info
Thank you for renewing attention on this story. I live in Yuba City and there are too many people who don't know about these men. Maybe someday soon the case can be solved.
hiiii Kris! i hope u see this!! im a teenage girl who used to struggle SO much w/ my mental health and just struggled a lot and i just wanna let u know how much u have helped me, ur videos always put me in a better mood and its so so sweet how u always compliment ur audience it helps boost my confidence :) i love u sm kris!! thx for just being u, you've helped me more than i can express ! :')
you’re so good at explaining topics like this! you keep it interesting, you can make jokes whilst understanding how serious this is, and you clearly put a lot of effort into this. love your videos!
Kris you Celina, Sam, and Colby should do an investigation in this area! It’s a known haunted location and maybe you guys could try to figure it out? Just a suggestion tho!
kris! i ordered my first sour boyz and it was the rainbow sherbet flavor!! they were amazing and imma need you to put more in the pack. not because there’s not enough but because of how quickly i ate them! sending much love ❤️ i definitely will be getting more
I love how you tell the stories. Even though the stories are messed up and tragic you keep me invested wanting to know more. From one Canadian to another! I enjoy watching your videos.
I love to see another crime video. The intro of "CRIME! CONSPIRACY! CULTS! SERIAL KILLERS AND MURDER!" and the "Unbuckle your seatbelts and go mock-5 down the highway" are so iconic. Great job Kris! Love your videos!
As a local to this area and a HUGE fan of yours, THIS was so exciting to see on my feed. So many of us (in various local counties) have been curious about what happened to these men for way too long. I meander those woods often, and I can't imagine what they went through during their endeavor.
AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH PODCAST LETS GO GUYSSSSSSSS ALSO!! The relationship thing with the woman in the adult helping place reminds me of the book “Flowers for Algernon” (gosh that book made me cry)
As an older sibling to a person with special needs, this kind of thing terrifies me. My sister is absolutely brilliant, but she is so kind hearted and trusting that truly anything could happen. Whether this was a case of foul play or not it’s extremely sad and I love that you’re bringing attention to cases like this Kris 💕
CRIME CONSPIRACY CULTS COLD CASES AND MURDER.. (my fav words of the whole week) ❤ I LOVE THIS SERIES ITS AMAZING AND SPOOKY AT THE SAME TIME (MY FAV COMBO) ❤❤❤❤ thanks kris 💕💕
As someone who lives in Chico I've been hearing about this story since high school. You did such a great job describing it, I even learned something new. Its great to keep talking about cases like this, to never forget about those effected
29:06 We need to name more criminals this way instead of giving them like "the phantom killer" or "the axe man" or "Jack the Ripper" or other intimidating names. Call them what they are: weirdos. Serial killers? Weirdos. Arsonists? Weirdos. Rapists? Weirdos. I'm just saying.
Yes! Because most of these weirdos only do this because they were outcasts, and if you were outcasted then and then give them scary names, it gives them a ego boost to keep doing it
I love these older lesser known cases. I feel like everybody on YT covers the same cases nowadays.. Kris digs and finds these older cases and I’m so here for it!! ❤
This was a awesome distraction from the steady rain outside my tent.. I remember hearing this strange story ages ago. So bizarre it twas indeed. Have an amazing weekend ahead
I love you Kris! I'm going through a very dark time right now. My dad left us and you are the only thing that makes me happy right now. I just want to encourage you to keep making content! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I've been obsessed with this case for awhile and was hoping you'd cover it at some point. I feel really emotional about this case bc I probably would have been in their group, had I been born in that time and place, due to my mental illness and disabilities. But also the deep mystery surrounding what happened to them and what ultimately happened to Gary Mathias has me always coming back to it and considering the possibilities of what could have happened. I think the "bully" theory or the fact that the driver that reported seeing their car actually had something to do with it, are the most plausible theories.
This is a really strange case. There's a few books out there about it that I've been wanting to read for a while. This video has re-sparked my interest. I'm going to finally get them and read them!
I am a wfr (wilderness first responder) and I’ve had to deal with hypothermia and learn a lot about it. It is interesting how many people underestimate the symptoms of hypothermia. It’s not just being very very cold. Your brain cannot function and you do some of the craziest things. Like walk away from a hot fire. Sit down in the fetal position instead of trying to warm up. And even not zipping up your coat.
I love Kris so much, she probably saved my life at one point. I will always stay loyal to her. I love the cold cases so much tho, they interest me so much more, and that’s hard to exhume cuz I love all cases
So excited to check out your podcast!! I just heard about this case today on crime junkies! Such a sad thing for those guys to endure. I can’t imagine the confusion they must have gone through and the heartache the family has endured since.
Dude I didn't even know this and I live in Yuba City! It's so cool to see the small town I live in be in TH-cam! DUDE I JUST SAW HE WAS A JANITOR AT YUBA GARDENS I WENT TO THAT SCHOOL! WHATTT
Some people just come from really sheltered families lol. I have an aunt in Waco but with all the times I visited her, I never knew about the Branch Davidian cult until my senior year of college. None of the adults ever mentioned it and I had no reason to find out about it otherwise until, of all things, it was mentioned in the movie "Midsommar" and I googled it from there
you should definitely do Dyatlov Pass Kris this story has always intrigued me plus the film about it is really good I hope you , Calib and all your fur babies are doing good
i absolutely adore the fact you started true crime videos and podcasts, ive been a huge fan for close to id say 5 years and you never fail to make my day 💕
The Yuba County 5 happened close to where I live. It's sad that such wounder men were taken so soon. I am mentally disabled myself and this just hits so close to home. I hope something is found about them someday.
I was wondering, if you saw this you could do the case of the triangle muders of Ireland. 6-8 girls went missing in the 1990's and they a rested someone this week its unsolved but i'd love to hear about it if you do see this and wish to do it. thank Love your vids keep up the great work!
I've watched a few different takes on this and every time it is just mind boggling how this happened and the possibilities!! Awesome work in making something a lot of different creators have talked about and making it fresh and new.
Theory! The red pickup might have targeted the group, forcing them into the forest. The call for help from the other car might have scared the group and influenced the group to go further on foot to lose the ones chasing them. They ended up at the cabin and some of them would've gone to try and find help. Gary would've shown how to open the cans and went to find help afterwards(taking the boots instead of his tennis shoes to try to fight the weather), leaving the 1 guy in the cabin alone but due to panic/hypothermia he didn't remember how to open the cans leading to him being starved or he would have tried to keep rationing, maybe even keeping most cans closed for if the others did come back and eventually he died as well
Hey Kris, I am a really huge fan and love your deep dives (and other content). I have also loved seeing your growth not only as a youtuber but as a person. I am from Australia and there is a unsolved case here that I think is really interesting so if you wanted to check it out it is the Beaumont children. And basically three siblings went to the beach together and they never came back home there are a bunch of theories on it but I really want to know what you find and what you think. Love Juliette.
Thank you for going into these young mens' lives, families, and personalities outside of the case. They all seem like precious souls. Bill Sterling especially seems so sweet and innocent.
Thank you for your content 🤍 could you please, do the Erin Chorney case from Manitoba Canada? My dad was friends with Erin's dad. I heard her little sisters side at church and it broke my heart. It shook my hometown and he's being let out soon but where he hid her was so wrong :( I don't hear much about this case but I would love to have some light on it. Thanks for speaking for those who cannot 🤍
Yuba city local here, they are legends in town, every one here has heard their story before. The Butte mountains and Plumas forest here are near an Air Force base, and we get lots of weird UFO/UAP sightings here !
More info on the paradoxical undressing: your body constricts (narrows) your blood vessels that are close to your skin surface when you are cold because your circulating blood that comes from the heart also carries heat because your core is typically warmest. By narrowing your blood vessels, blood flow is decreased near the surface of your skin so less heat is lost to the environment. This constriction is caused by smooth muscles (these are involuntary so your body controls them without you thinking). Well over time like with skeletal muscles, they tire out. When the muscles constricting these blood vessels no longer have energy to to stay constricted, they give out causing sudden vasodilation. This vasodilation cause blood vessels close to the skin to suddenly widen and blood previously directed to your core to rush near the skin. Since suddenly there’s a rush of heat near the surface of your skin and heat naturally wants to move to areas of less heat, the heat from your body suddenly rushes into the environment through convection. This sudden rush of heat near your skin and it transferring to the environment gives the illusion of overheating. This and delirium causes people to remove their clothes. Also, your body prioritizes keeping your essential organs and brain at proper temperatures over limbs. So another thing that happens is as your body’s remaining heat supply is used up, the brain can leave the range of temperatures needed for it to function. This causes the delirium and damage. Damage to the hypothalamus (part of brain that regulates temperature) can also cause paradoxical undressing. Source: I’m currently studying biology in college and recently took a class that taught about adaptations to extreme hot and cold in different species

I've heard this one so many times it's kinda annoying lol. Very strange and sad story, though.
I’m from Oroville and currently living in Chico, never heard of it till last year
@krystalynkersey It's cool to see you guys out here that have heard of it and know about it.
If you haven't, you should also show him Wendigoon's video on it! People are definitely keeping the memory of these young men going.
This story gives me chills. I’m autistic and it hits harder knowing they were as well. She delivers this story so well though!!

Yes! Because most of these weirdos only do this because they were outcasts, and if you were outcasted then and then give them scary names, it gives them a ego boost to keep doing it

I think the "bully" theory or the fact that the driver that reported seeing their car actually had something to do with it, are the most plausible theories.
i’ve been with kris since quarantine and her content brings me so much joy glad to be here for the remainder of the ride

Truly a haunting and heartbreaking case. My heart goes out to the families.

More info on the paradoxical undressing: your body constricts (narrows) your blood vessels that are close to your skin surface when you are cold because your circulating blood that comes from the heart also carries heat because your core is typically warmest. By narrowing your blood vessels, blood flow is decreased near the surface of your skin
so less heat is lost to the environment.
