One thing, or rather, one name has to be mentioned: Joost van den Broek. Band: After Forever and key player in most of Arjen Lucassen's endeavours and the pianist in this.
On grand piano we have Joost van den Broek, great pianist. He was a member of one of Floor’s previous band After Forever and now collaborates with Arjen Anthony Lucassen (Ayreon) to mention one thing he does. ❤️🤘🇦🇺
There is one thing I always wonder... What does the artist think, when Floor covers a song? A) Wow cool, Floor covered my song and amazingly so or B) S*** Floor covered my song, now I can never sing it again or C) Both Stay safe Dirk
Floor's belts are out of this world crystal clear perfection. She took this classic to a new level, and it felt like I was hearing the song for the first time. Man, can her voice ring magical to the eardrum. Simply amazing..
Of the recent covers Floor has done, this is my favorite 😍 might be my favorite of all covers I've heard from her, including all of Beste Zangers. Just absolutely love how she interprets this song 💖✨
You know that “new drug” that Huey Lewis was talking about back in 84? Floor is that drug....although she does still keep me up at night watching reaction vids of her on TH-cam. Love your informative lessons about vocals and technique. It’s really made me understand and appreciate how much muscular control and coordination it takes to perform at the level she does. 🤘🙏🏻
About the audio and video tracks - I'm sure that what we're listening to here is the actual audio recording that is synced in post to the video track, via the in-camera audio track. There are a few small sync issues with the handheld shots, but the tripod mounted camera is synced with the audio, indicating that both are recorded at the same time. I believe they're only using one camera, so they probably did a second take with the camera handheld and then cut those clips into the timeline, resulting in some slight out-of-sync problems on the handheld shots. I'm pretty sure there's only one camera and more than one take as Hannes would have been tripping over the tripod on some of the handheld shots if it was also being used at the same time with another camera. Two cameras plus the audio recording of a single take, would really help to solve this.
I think Floor loves this song, she can relate to it I believe. She has done it in After Forever, also with only Joost on piano, I believe I heard it too on a ReVamp concert, and she did it on the Nightwish Cruise, her solos in 19 - and now on her channel. And yes she is in a rocking chair, I believe it is the one that have followed her for many years. She talked about in an interview I believe, many the one from Dutch TV. This version, she is putting even more passion in, but also a smile in her eyes, playing with her voice. Incredible performance.
Thanks for this analysis Charlie. I appreciated your insights into the breath control and support requirements and how Floor uses them so effortlessly. Additionally I liked how you described the way that the voice needs the resonant capabilities of not just the vocal chords, but also the internal vibrations of the head and mouth positions. I really am impressed with your artistic style to your reactions and look forward to many more. 👍😃
What you're describing is the functionality of the vocal tract. It definitely is a helpful way to create sound. Floor mentions this in her master classes actually!
Thanks, i did not now you didnt listen to this one, i think again great vocal performance from Floor, youre reaction ads what i need, great explanation of the song, the voice, thanks, keep safe,
Heart was one of my favorite bands growing up as a teenager in the 80s. Now Nightwish and Floor are my favorites and I adore her cover arrangement. A lot of people compare it against the album version Heart did, but that was a pretty bombastic, radio-friendly 80s power ballad arrangement. Later on, as Heart played smaller, more intimate venues, they rearranged it to be more of an acoustic song, which I think is what Floor was going for. Examples: Heart - "Alone" (Official Video) th-cam.com/video/1Cw1ng75KP0/w-d-xo.html Hear - "Alone" (Acoustic) th-cam.com/video/hZ8aeT61uJ0/w-d-xo.html
Loved your analysis as usual my friend. This cover is a very different one for Floor. Very stripped down. Heart's version is a hard rock/ Pop power ballad with a guitar solo as well. So of course Floor stripped it down and slowed it down to focus on the emotional lyrical content. Never imitate of copy another performer. Always find a way to make it your own! See you very soon! Peace. 😊😊😊🎶🎶🎶👑👆✌👍
Stop talking about the Floorhead vibrating man I'm getting confused on wich channel to get my kicks I'm watching. Brilliant cover Great reaction Keep on rocking in the free world ✌
Hallo, one people tell, she do pre-reordings(Playpack). OMG,they know nothing about Floor. In an interview, she say, she never mime a Song. but this guys see to much American TV or Award shows..sorry friends forget Joost van den Broek 🤗
She said she still sings when doing a video, but that doesn't mean that's the audio we are hearing. In this case it doesn't seem to me that the audio comes from the video but maybe I'm missing something. Anyhow she is perfectly capable to do it live if she wants to.
It would be so cool to watch Ann Wilson react to this video for the first time. Same for Laura Fabian and Adagio. I wonder if these artists are aware of Floor's covers of their tunes? Anybody out there know?
👍❤ I feel like Floor has been flexing in each of these youtoob covers. Maybe I am wrong but I have had the impression she was doing this on purpose. Competitive swagger, even if it is just competing with herself. I love this song but it always gets in my head for a while..had to chill out on reactions but didn't want to miss yours. 👍❤
As far as I know Floor records the audio separately from the video, where she effectively lip-syncs to herself for the artistic effect, so there isn't really much flexing done here...
@@andraskovacs8959 meh it is multiple takes for most of them but she isn't lip synching. I would question whether she even can do that convincingly. And she has absolutely no need for it anyway.
@@andraskovacs8959 She doesn't "lip-sync" to herself. That will be absurd. Obviously she doesn't do just a single take. She probably does several versions, choose the best one, and then the video is edited using the images from the different takes. That's editing a video, not lip-sync.
Get over the fear of volume because the higher your belt the louder it needs to be to ensure you are not flat so confidence is key to accuracy... Fake it til you make it! Practice practice practice until it is second nature muscle memory and then you can focus on emotion of the performance and the storytelling 🤣
@@CharlieCalottaReacts well there you go... It is in my "watch later educational" playlist... I need to stop getting distracted by other reaction videos... Nice to meet you though, kind Sir! Stay safe, be well, hope you are vaccinated soon {high- five socially distanced}
The sound quality is quite good, her voice is crystal clear and you don't hear anything else, other than the piano of course. So there is no way the video is the actual recording session. No studio capable of that track would have bare wood paneled walls. Just, no.
Broadcast nerd says: If she were to sing live into that mic with sound monitors in hearing range, the recording would fail. Epic fail (feedback painful and even damaging to the ears). She could do this live on the mic if she had in-ear monitors, but she clearly has none. There WAS some sort of open-air playback device so she could sing along with the same tempo, but her mic was dead. Floor noteably sings most songs with identical, or nearly so, pacing and inflection, etc., so for the video she sat and sang along with herself, recalling exactly how she formed her vowels and consonants, etc. Yes, she sings live with playback monitors working (and in-ear monitors as well), but only her voice (not the monitors) is picked up by the mic. Yes. Microphones are that selective, depending on the specific design of the mic. So after the initial daze of her performance wore off (and as reactors and commenters began mentioning how impressive she is sitting in the rocking chair ... no offense, BBS) I looked and saw that she was not performing live for the video. Cheers! (EDIT: My remarks are based on TV broadcasting ... and from more than 10 years ago. Floor MAY have been singing live for the main run-through before additional footage (B-roll) was shot for editing, but I have trouble believing that. Why would she? Sing it to perfection standing at a hot mic ... then sing it again for the camera. And if she was singing that far from the mic, any monitors she used would clearly come through the mic. Just clarifying the limitation of my experience and chance to be mistaken.)
I believe you're right, the XLR on the end of the lead to that $6,000 AKG C12VR mic doesn't go anywhere, she has done Q&A in that room and some of her interviews too, the hard walls give a lot of very fast reverberation. Sure, she sang it for her home recording, and she sang it here but the actual audio is from her home recording which was doubtless done in her acoustically dead studio, and I think this is the case for all of her recent covers. That said, they are all brilliant though. And perhaps see these guys (male) who did play and sing "Alone" live, on key too IIRC with the guitarist doing the high harmony. th-cam.com/video/t6xVWfZ1qdk/w-d-xo.html

This certainly isn't a bad cover, Floor does everything except bad...... I however still prefer the Heart version with the excellent Ann Wilson. It simply may be the preference for the familiar, but there you go.
after an absolutely beautiful cover version of this song I'll bet she will be asked to join the wilson sisters onstage some intimate setting, and do i need to say this is one of the best versions and yes i glad she covered this particular song and putting her own spin on it a little and that is pretty cool that that piano player that the dude in the chat @stevenhopwood8195 said is Joost Van den Broek a member of after forever and is now collaborating with Ayreon damn i going to check that band to because this woman and everything she touches and everyone she puts herself around especially previous bands she was a part of she still has room for them and being as famous as she is and will continue to get if this keeps up, and she seems to be a strong woman and quite powerful beacon of light in the sometimes rather dark world of heavy metal music and of life itself but im sure after hearing the music she done so far that there may be a less darkness in our world. They have a long musical history together, more than 20 years.
And whoever shot the video ... perhaps Floor's husband, whose name escapes me right now. It's a nicely worked video and editing.
Actually - as he was knighted in the Netherlands - he is Sir Joost van den Broek

A little correction - he came to After Forever from Ayreon/Star One.
