I remember getting a Spyro demo after my brother and his girlfriend ordered Pizza Hut in the early 2000s. What a time.. I had so many Jampack demos back in the day this was a nostalgia trip for sure good work my guy
PS1 demo discs are some of the most nostalgic items to me. The music, the menus, and the mid-development differences to the full games which were fascinating to see. I sometimes will download random demo discs just to relive that
The demo discs are easily for me one of the most important parts of gaming on the PlayStation all those years ago. Will never forget it, being exposed to new games that you never heard of & having some of the best experiences you could ever have with friends & family was epic. We played the demos as much as anything else back then, would always save any pocket money myself & brothers had just to get the demo disc each month. So many great memories for sure. Great video, this really brings me back.
I still have a PS Move Demo disc for my PS3 but most demos I got were digitals from the PSN Store. After I moved to PC, there are still demos, but free full game giveaways and something else which I refuse to mention made them moot and now a lot of pubs don't even bother to include demos on Steam, Epic, etc.
I miss how artistic everything was back then. Today most menus for a lot of games look like powerpoint presentations that are all about logic and function, where back then they went full on creative with the menus and overall presentation. The presentation between the games were art themselves. If demo disks were to make a comeback, it'd probably look something like netflix or whatever instead of having creative animations.
Exactly mate! It's the creativity that made the demo disks very special and helped you get immersed or teleported in the gaming experience but yeah it's just a sign of the times. Sure the menus nowadays are about function but they dont create the same effect like the old ones used to do.
Man I miss demo discs they were so fascinating as a kid I couldn’t believe they would let us try out all of these games for free and the overall aesthetic of the menus and wackiness of them all
Without the OG PS1 the world wouldn’t be the same. I loved reading those magazines and playing the demos. That was, I’m opinion, the “Golden Age of Gaming.”
Exactly!!!! I stopped playing videogames long time ago now Of course the graphics are God like today, but the pay for win, the game being 100% online not allowing to buying it at the end bust just rent it till the servers are shut down I pass 2000 -2010 was the best videogame era
All these years later, I still hold a grudge towards the magazines when one week, the magazine disc had no playable demos, and just trailers. And then the next, and the next. For someone who’s birthday was right after Christmas and only got 1-2 games a year, my only chance to try new games all year was gone in an instant with no warning.
Talk about memories. Long story short, I worked like crazy during the 90's. My young son who was 6 in 1998 drove me crazy to get a PlayStation. We lived paycheck to paycheck, but all of his friends had a PlayStation, and the bus rides home from school were hell for him because all of his friends had a PlayStation, and that's all they talked about. They even picked on him because he didn't have one. I had to get him one. We went to Sears to buy him one, and they were sold out. They did have Nintendo 64's piled up, in stock, but my son said no, he wanted a PlayStation. We finally found one a week later, and a copy of Crash Bandicoot 2. Life got a lot better around our house after that. All of that gear, and games were extremely expensive for our family back then, even just the memory cards, but it was so worth it. All of us played that thing. His mom played, my son, and me. Still working my butt off, I only had one weekend off from work every month. That Friday night, we would order a pizza from Pizza Hut which came with a PlayStation Demo Disc. Good times. We were set for the weekend. I'm retired and set for life now. All of my children are grown, successful and doing well, but those times when we had to struggle hold fond memories for me. Just a day off from work, a hot pizza, and a new demo disc was really something to look forward to. I still love everything PS-1. The Demo Discs seemed to end with the advent of the PS-2. The end of an era. Thank you for this video.
Demo Disc was a way of gaming life for me. Thank you so much for the trip down memory lane. The time I and my best friend spent on the ps1 demos was unmeasurable. You just got yourself a new subscriber.
Man this was like a nostalgia rollercoaster for me. Thank you so much for taking the time and effort in putting this video together. The demo disc era of gaming was wild but more than that growing up and living through the transition from the 80's, 90's and eventually the 2000's gaming world was something that's hard to put into words. It truly was such an exciting thing to watch literally evolve in front of your eyes from both the console and PC perspectives, because demo discs were absolutely just as vital to PC gaming and exposing people to new titles. I was one of those punks going into my local grocery or drug store and "purchasing" (absolutely never stole) the latest issues of Playstation or PC Gamer magazines for the content and the disc. Thanks again, this was an awesome video and homage to a by-gone era.
Appreciate the kind words! 🙏 Yeah although it wasn't perfect - it still feels understated just how important that era was for creating a gaming experience that goes beyond the games by going out and collecting the discs in many different ways plus the demo disc's fun interactive menus that really pulls you in.

Dude this video is immaculate, you killed it. I have super fond memories of selecting a bunch of demo discs from OPM and just letting an afternoon melt away. The menu music from Uk PS magazine was unforgettable. Many a late night flicking between Parappa, Croc, Resi 2, Armoured Core and so on. Absolute bliss, thanks for the trip.
Fun fact: there's an earlier version of Demo One with a different soundtrack in background, the one heard here is referred online as "German Demo One" disc. I still have lots of PS1 demo discs...
Demo disc's were the coolest thing as a kid buying a magazine and bring that disc home to play through all the new games demos and watch all the videos. My brother and I loved it; and now as adults, we still reminisce on those times. I wish my kids could have that same experience; but I guess it's different times now.
Man I loved those PS1 magazines with demo discs so much. I played Command & Conquer demo like milion times. I miss that era of gaming. Edit: 4:46 now THAT is blast from a past.
This brings back good memories, i used demo discs a lot. Specialy the one with the PS1 console, playing WipEout and Ridge Racer untill i could buy them, another demo i remember well is the one with Oddworld, that i played over and over. Still have a decent amount of PS1 and PS2 demo discs. Great documentry!! And thank you for making it.
This is a very detailed and well researched video my friend, You could've just left it at "remember demos lol omg they were cool, the end" but you poured a passionate amount of energy into articulating what made demos so magical and mysterious as well as so engaging to our young minds back then. When we were growing up, no internet or constant exposure to oversaturated content, getting a demo and experiencing any kind of new game, new world and new sights & sounds was a massive treat. Thank you for making me relive this.
I wish we still had demo discs or even demos for that matter because it seems to be heavily relied on that we're meant to buy games we see, or haven't tried -- I miss the days of video gaming rentals.
The brevity of this video belies what a ridiculous amount of effort it took to make this happen. As someone who knows the feeling of bashing my head in over some code that won't work only to come to a revelation and get it back on track, I congratulate you for your perseverance, and thank you for the awesome results we will be able to enjoy!
I still have the PlayStation underground tshirt that I got for registering my PS2, along with some demo discs for both PS1 and ps2 that came with it. The “Live in your world play in ours” one. Hard to believe I’ve had that shirt for over 20 years, and I’ve probably worn it at least 1000 times over those years.
Not only did I like the Playstation demo disc but I started to collect them and then went on to collect demos for Xbox, Sega, Nintendo, 3DO and any other systems I could get my hands on. Over the last decade I started selling my demo collection and because I had a lot of rare and valuable demos I was able to get a substantial amount for them, enough to make a significant down payment on my first house. I will always remember with fondness getting a new demo disc and playing through it to check out it's contents. But that is a distant past now. Once Microsoft started releasing demo versions of nearly every game in it's Xbox 360 marketplace there was no longer a point to make demo disc.
Damn 406 subs? You deserve more. Thanks for this video, I used to play these (interactive cd sampler) demo disc's with my friend and it got me into Parappa the Rappa. Nostalgic!
I used to love getting the free to 5 dollar demos from Electronic Boutique. Also the free one that came in the cereal box featuring Tomb Raider 2's demo.
I really miss the time of demo discs. I spent countless hours during the PSX era in particular playing everything on the OPM demo disc every month. They really did add something to the experience of owning a console that can't be replicated by having individual demos for some games in online stores. A few years ago when I bought my PSVR I was thrilled to find that there were demo discs for it. Mine sadly didn't come with any (just two full pack-in games), but they were available to download from the Playstation store, and even that experience of launching a unified program, browsing the game demos, and trying out a wide variety of content (some of which I wouldn't have sought out on my own)... it really brought me back to those days of getting a disc with a gaming magazine. While I'm sure PSVR 2 won't have any physical demo discs, I hope Sony does something similar and bundles together a demo program. Hell, I'd love to see them do that for the PS5 in general. There are some great games like Returnal and Sifu that many people didn't take a chance on, but have excellent gameplay that could entice people to buy them if a demo were released. Great job on the video.
5:47 I didn't realize that Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars was ported to the PS1. 10:17 Crash 3 contains a demo of Spyro 1 and it can be accessed by inputting the Konami Code on the title screen.
These were amazing. When I was younger I remember having a few of them for my PS2. The demos and videos on the disk were always entertaining, especially the one with the Finding Nemo demo on it. My other favorite was the Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks demo disk that came with the official strategy guide you had to purchase from Game Stop. Good times.
I still own several of my PS1 and PS2 demo disc. I was subscribe to one of their magazines and you got a free demo. This with it definitely give me a lot of memories. I think my best memory was me and my sister. We played out a demo of crash bandicoot three warped we played it so much that it couldn't play anymore. It was so funny
The demo disc with Kula World and Medevil. I miss those times. in the late 1998, it was my first time to own a PS1, although I played it before many years prior.
Actually sega mega cd 💿 had it's first demo discs before sony. Bein in 1993 and was the first 2 levels of thunderhawk.... obviously sega saturn demo's followed too, but i was one of the few adopters of the mega cd and it really was special owning that first ever demo - even with a splash screen proclaiming it as segas first and how special this was... very good times back then... But boi i certainly remember "demo1" for the station
Good lord you hit my nostalgia with Demo 1. T-rex and Manta ray blew my mind back then. Those European Techno tracks used on PAL disc were just brilliant.
I absolutely loved this video, thanks for it but I have a huge question and I’d love it if you answered, I recognize the song/effect used at 11:14 can you please tell me what it is!!!!!❤❤
The song was the menu theme for plenty of those old Euro Demos from the official PlayStation Magazines - UK, EU, PAL etc. They used a few themes over the years but this is the most iconic one I reckon
Brilliant video. If u can keep them coming, please do. Great memories. Virtually all the demo discs back then were showcases for what this polygon shifting dynamo was all about. 8 bit to 16 was mind blowing at the time. 16 to 32 is almost impossible to explain. Arcade at home was not to b sniffed at. Unless u cud afford a neo geo, which no one cud. Used to love the demo scene. Coming from an amiga background mag cover floppy discs were all part of it so i was lucky as it felt like a natural transition. Still got my original demo disc plus the first edition of the official playstation mag and demo disc Inc. Nostalgia is powerful for a reason, takes u to a simpler time where less important things mattered more.
Brilliantly researched, it brought back many memories especially with the PS1 but interesting to hear the impact of demo discs worldwide! You have a new subscriber 👍
Congrats on winning the Algorithm! I love demo disc talk. My only criticism to help in the future is perhaps bring background noise down just a little, at some points it was levelling your voice. Good work!
Man you took me back to 1997 25 Years ago. My Mom got me the PlayStation from KB-Toys! I got Die Hard Trilogy and Crash Bandicoot. Then I saw it came with a Demo Disc on it where Tomb Raider II, Jet Moto 2, Armor Core, and ironically enough Crash Bandicoot 2. A Year and a Half later I got the Slim version called the PSOne. With the last Demo Disc I ever had. Although that disc wasn’t as memorable as the first I mean the first also had Cool Boarders, Crazy enough this one had Cool Boarders 3. 😅 Which I skipped until after I played Cool Boarders 2001. I wish they would remake Cool Boarders thats what I think of when I think Snowboarding Games. SSX was cool and all but that was my Teen Years I want the games from my childhood years! Thank You for the Throwback! The PlayStation was the best PlayStation for me. Sure PS2 was Great as well. But my Nostalgia is on the Original! Air Combat (Ace Combat) today, One which also needs a remake. Tekken 2 awe man that was my Fighting Game. Also for fighting games was Fighting Force. The first was the best the sequel not so much. Dino Crisis was my Shit. Dino Crisis 2 was too easy! Die Hard Trilogy 2 was decent. I was 10 back then when the OG came out now 35. I miss those Days. PS5 is more like the PS3 at this point very lame. Where’s the PS4 was the PS2 in terms of Greatness… Hopefully PS6 will return to the Greatness when it eventually releases in the next 5-7 Years!
Man I had about 7 - 8 gaming magazines subscriptions at one time lol I loved getting them every month along with PlayStation, Dreamcast, and XBOX Demo Discs That was the Best! I miss those days....sigh
I have alot of these demo discs and I they were nice ways to play a game before the game was released, now it is more of a novelty CD filled with restrictive demo content of already released full games, which is still fun to play considering the extreme limitations some of the demo games have. It is also for to uncover all the Net Yaroze games inside some demo discs, not all of them had it but when they did, it was a blast to play those.
I use to get Incite magazines back in 1999 when they had PC demo discs and even a console magazine variation, although the publication never lasted long and then the Offical Us PlayStation magazines back in 2000-2001. so i had a whole collection of those discs
I love and miss demo disks I used to own so many of them especially Demo1 with its techno trailer. I think my favourite was Demo 38 or 39 it used to have Future Cop, Theme Park, Circuit Breakers and Tomb Raider 3. Theres got to be somewhere you can replay them via emulators?
I remember that my dad gave me PS1 Demo discs thinking that all the games showed were in the game, they were in the disc but they were only demos, I still have those discs
When I was a kid i had my mom sign me up for the playstation underground. At one point I had every single issue from start to the end of the service. Don't know what happened to all those demos but they were a lot of fun!
I still have the ps3 demo disc that I used to collect occasionally back in the day from Official PlayStation Magazine UK as my local book store used to have them on an irregular basis. Remember fondly using them as a backup to demos as download speeds back in the day were not only slow but also have a quota to them.
19:11 These came from the GameInformer magazines demo discs for the PS2 that released monthly in North America. I used to get those way back then when they were a thing.
As someone who continues to try and keep the life of Playstation Demos alive with Demoplays, and wanting to find a way to bring back that interactivity with the demo menus again in video form like i used to before the removal of annotations, it genuinely is sad to be reminded of the death of this format since it was such a unique and special thing Sony did for so long. I didnt even know there WERE playable PS3 demo discs and thought they were all trailers, since all the ones i found and got were mainly that, trailers. It has become harder to find and preserve many of these demos, especially with PS2, but i feel like PS3 would be a rabbit hole in itself. At least PS1 is relatively safe, almost all still available to be played in rom form and working pretty much 100% on most emulators. But i do hope to keep going and keeping them around, and i hope to see more do the same with showing how special and important these were. From the games they would have, to the menus, to the music, to the very vibe it usually brought to everyone. Cheers for the vid, man. Glad to finally be recommended this by TH-cam.
great video, this channel should grow quickly with quality content like this. I loved demo discs and still have a few. takes me back to a simpler time, growing up my family didn’t have much money so we had very few full games but demo discs still kept me and my brothers entertained for hours
I remember here in NZ, The Playstation 2 launching with a demo disc with only 3 games: Wild Wild Racing, Fifa 2001 and SSX Snowboarding - it was terrible, lol.
I discovered Ape Escape on a demo disc in 1999..it has gone on to become my favorite game..I had a subscription to PlayStation magazine, and looked forward to it every month..
I remember having a demo disc when I was a kid and it had Jumping Flash! on it. I have very warm memories of that. I loved getting the discs with game magazines
My Playstation came with an Underground disc and introduced me to things like Armored Core which is still a fave. I loved that demo disc. Only got one actual game with the console so the demo disc kept me going.
PlayStation Underground was crucial for me as a kid. Plus, that Pizza Hut demo disc that had MGS on it was legendary.
Yes, I still have that demo laying around.
YEAH !! That was cool , thinking this is state of the art motion control and graphics .
@@GinsengSakura I have all 3 discs.
I wonder if MGS or GT would be the franchises they are today if it wasn't for that Pizza Hut demo disc.

Yea getting Gaming Magazines and Demo Discs really made it more special compared to now
I have the original Demo 1, with the T-Rex.
Blew my mind years ago.
Man this video popped off. Well done, very well put together and huge nostalgia trip.
Definitely subscribed for more!
Not only a great trip down the memory lane, I also learned something about PS Underground and more about the PS3 Demos. Great video and stay awesome.
Jampack with Spyro and crash bash was my shit
The V-CD on the Demo 1 disc was incredible. Still one of the best music visualisers ever.
The demo disc with Kula World and Medevil. I miss those times. in the late 1998, it was my first time to own a PS1, although I played it before many years prior.
great vid. very thorough! love that ps1 demo disc aesthetic
I miss demo disks, they introduced me to so many different games I never would have heard of otherwise
I still love firing some of these up. Many of them have hidden Easter eggs that are fun to come across.
Good lord you hit my nostalgia with Demo 1. T-rex and Manta ray blew my mind back then.
Those European Techno tracks used on PAL disc were just brilliant.
Amazing use of the orignal soundtracks in the background - takes me way back!
Thank you.
Please make more content like this in future!🙏
I loved my Volume 8 Demo Disc. It had Spyro, Gran Turismo, Metal Gear Solid, and other great games.
I remember playing Tomba on a demo disk. Was fun.
I am crazy impressed by this video from such a small channel. Don't stop what you are doing here I believe in you.
Congrats on winning the Algorithm! I love demo disc talk. My only criticism to help in the future is perhaps bring background noise down just a little, at some points it was levelling your voice. Good work!
Banger video. Much nostalgia. 10/10
This was really well produced. Nostalgia overload!!!!! Looking forward to seeing more Daz.
Love to see a small channel pop off due to a quality video
I watched the whole thing. Nice video.
Awsome I literally was searching for a video like this! Awsome content man keep it up i miss the ps 2 demo disc era ...
Lovely nostalgia trip, thank you!
The effort put into this video is amazing
Man I had about 7 - 8 gaming magazines subscriptions at one time lol
I loved getting them every month along with PlayStation, Dreamcast, and XBOX Demo Discs
That was the Best!
The algorithm has smiled on you. Good video 10/10
really appreciated your efforts nice documentary about my childhood demo discs (:
So much nostalgia. It gave me goosebumps!
I use to get Incite magazines back in 1999 when they had PC demo discs and even a console magazine variation, although the publication never lasted long and then the Offical Us PlayStation magazines back in 2000-2001. so i had a whole collection of those discs
Cool vid. Demo 1 sticks in my mind. Being able to control T Rex was insane
In the US playstation demo disc is the producer lifelike productions
Demo 1 with abes oddyse. played it again last summer with ps1 on lg oled 55 😊
Good job with the video.
I don't really watch your videos, but dang bro. If you keep making more videos like this, you'll be a big TH-camr in no time
I remember that my dad gave me PS1 Demo discs thinking that all the games showed were in the game, they were in the disc but they were only demos, I still have those discs
I loved these,..have a cd folder full of these.
I still have my demo-1 disc around somewhere, which i got with my ps1, that demo disc was so iconic!
Yessss, great video, had some great memories spending hours playing these demo disks.
Same here, glad you enjoyed it 🙏
First of all.....I applaud you
I like the final fantasy 10 music at 14:53 ✅😂💪🏾
Demo discs introduced me to Musashi, Silent Hill, Tony Hawk, and so much more!
Thank you for the video. It was quite informative and a good nostalgia trip.
i'm in a PAL region, but my demo 1 disc had an underwater theme and games like crash bandicoot 3 and tomb raider 3
Great video. I loved the demo discs back in the day it was how I learned about alot of new and existing games.
great video, this channel should grow quickly with quality content like this.
The PlayStation Magazine issue 65 demo disc will always have a special place in my heart. It had the coolest menu music too, feel free to look it up
Nothing was cooler than getting a magazine that had a demo disc on the front.
