    I wish she had mentioned "riley was here" an episode that showed what type of person Riley could be. He's artist, and sensitive, but no one really nurtures that part of him.

      Great great comment. My exact sentiments when I watched the show, and this is indeed the reality for a lot of black kids, that's why they gravitate towards negative lifestyles branded as "cool" when in reality that's far from who they are. Eventually they get lost in that lifestyle and can't do much to change it later on in life

      Guess Who true but that’s from a homophobe’s view. Even though that character was based on a real person. It’s every homophobe’s nightmare. Gangstalicious’ character was he never who he truly was. He pretend to be a thug for records sales.

His being “weak willed” is an unrelated character trait-because Mcgruder made his characters well written along with being commentative.

But “talking proper” is just another form of miseducation from the school system.

    • @jordanedmond5075
      @jordanedmond5075 3 ปีที่แล้ว +63

      @Dude Guy the problem is that “proper english” isnt our “home language”. AAVE is how we communicated, and people calling it “unproper english” is how they have more control. Its not our home language. Our home language is actually AAVE. That said, once again we need to focus on education, but the idea that aave is unproper english is false.

    Your breakdown of Sarah were my thoughts EXACTLY, I thought I was the only one who thought so and it’s so good to finally hear someone say what I’ve been thinking about her character for the longest and honestly its why I found and still find her to be one of the most annoying and almost completely intolerable characters in the main cast, thank you for breaking her down:)
    P.S. Tom deserves better

    • @jackzfr1650
      @jackzfr1650 2 ปีที่แล้ว +95

      Tom got what he deserves. His inability to come to terms with any cultural identity essentially just makes him an ideal plowhorse. He's not far enough into the upper middle class white American suburbia to fully identify with them, but his nearly complete lack of identification with any semblance of being black also keeps him away from them. He's like a perpetual guest in both worlds.
      With that being said, I think he wants to connect more with black people than he does white people seeing as how he's tied into the other main black figures in the show and tries to learn from them.
      Funny enough, his lack of identity, and in turn masculinity , is what drives Sarah to search for other successful black men who do have a strong sense of masculinity and identity (Obama, Usher, Pretty Boy Flizzy aka Chris Brown). Tom is so close, yet so far when it comes to black excellence, that it infuriates me. But that's good writing I guess.

      Tom is a White Man in a Black Man’s Skin. He’s EXACTLY who Ice Cube called out in his 1991 True To The Gang music video. Sarah is his White Trophy Wife.
      He’s voiced by Cedric Yarabourgh, who’s like a more nuanced version of Phil Lamarr. BOTH are Black and both grew up in the suburbs.
      Sarah is voiced by Mrs. Tom Kenny herself, Jill Talley Kenny. Jill usually plays subdued characters and when they were both on Mr. Show, she was Kenny’s tipping off point.

    I also think Jazmine plays a role in this as well. She's not featured often; however, when she is with Hughey she wishes to understand and to learn his thinking. Sometimes, like in the lemonade episode, she doesn't want to in fear that he is right, becuase she knows that he is. Jazmine plays in a large part of thinking in both black and liberal society, we want to learn, to be 'woke', but to do that all the time is hard. To always do actions with consequences in mind is difficult. To be naive is so much easier when you don't see it coming. When we focus on Jazmin going to the movies, she slowly unravels at wanting to fit in but hating the entire experience. This may seem a bit far fetched, but as someone who is also mixed the same way, Jazmine reveals the awkward social need as someone who is mixed to fit in with one race or the other. Jazmine is simply 'Jazmine', but as a child like everyone else wishes to fit in and hasn't learned this lesson yet. I think she also plays in some other things to, but these are the main ones for me.

      Ima blaxican (black and mexican) and I do not fully in either group (well the ones around me anyways) and I get told I speak white unless I'm mad and that's when I sound black which is weird but back on topic, it's weird being mixed sometimes because when your parents wanna get ya into their culture you kinda become like a fusion of both that you end up not really being identical or somewhat similar to what you're tryna be

    the point of elders is a falsity and one i think is a point the creator misses on big time. elders is not a ruckus in fact he is the exact opposite. he wants an end to the destructive black culture where as ruckus perpetuates blacks as being beneath whites. elders is one who understand that racism has nothing to do with the black situation but gang culture and the perpetuation of that culture through black media causes a self sustaining cycle of negativity that grows as the culture spreads eventually to whites who fetishize black men weither it be women in the bedroom or men in culture.

    One of the greatest cartoons ever. Period. The writing and the layering of the satire was so well done that McGruder's brushstrokes were untraceable. That's exactly why the 4th season bombed so hard. Because no matter how tryhard NOBODY could duplicate what he did nobody. It was an achievement in animation, in literature.

    I grew up as a rural white kid and finished highschool during the boondocks run. It was a great show in general and also provided a foil to how I already saw the world as I grew up.
    I was lucky to grow up in a house free of racial hate, but I definitely needed this caricature to challenge the limited world view I had on what I thought was just an urban thing.
    That show, combined with my later life experiences of moving to the south has repeatedly shocked my world view and better helped me understand the social implications of media, the news cycle, and some of the cultural nuisances of not only the black community, but opened my perception to how several cultures can work within the multi-shaded world we live in.
    I can only be here to help by giving the opportunity to those that should had it from the start. But I'll damn well do it.

    I would like to add more about Huey. While everything you said about him was accurate, he does have his flaws. These include a sometimes rigid and uncompromising nature, which can result in isolation and difficulty in forming relationships. His radical views and unwavering stance make it challenging for him to find common ground with others, impeding effective communication and collaboration. Huey's intense focus on social justice can also lead to tunnel vision, causing him to overlook other aspects of life and potential solutions.
    In the comic strip, this dynamic is portrayed well through Caesar, who is Riley's best friend. While Caesar often agrees with Huey, he is generally less interested in politics and occasionally becomes annoyed that it dominates Huey's conversations.
